Sony 18-55mm, 50mm and 55-200mm lens discontinued?
Sony is discontinuing the Sony 18-55mm, the 50mm
and the 55-200mm
. Probably there will be new lenses coming with the new Alpha cameras.

3 years ago |wow that’s a surprise, well if they can make them better then go for it, the 18-55sam was quite good, I think they should improve build quality… plastic is plastic but there is far better plastic available for them to use.

3 years ago |i hope sony use the technology in nex lens so that alpha lens will be much quieter.. considering the next alpha cameras will probably have video, quiet lens is really needed.

3 years ago |Strange. I’m astonished by this decision…the 18-55 was a pretty good lens, optically that is. I’d like something the 18-55 in 16-105 build quality…window with the focus distance, metal mount, etc. 55-200 is relatively good, wonder what they are going to do with that one…new type of beercan, LOL ?

New AF motor (NEX in mind)? new design? how knows…

3 years ago |The 18-55m is a good lens for close up stuff but it’s not good for longer stuff but the 55-200 is not the best (i tried this lens on my partners A500 body (She also has 3 other body’s a A700 , A900 and a older but still working A100 she works part time as a professional photographer) it just felt too soft , I am now using a Tamron 55-200 and that seems stronger than sony’s 55-200. even my partner said for a budget it was actually pretty good.
I personally cannot see that many lenses being made for the NEX because if they want to keep it light adding telephoto and macro lenses is doing the complete reverse.
it feels to me as if they NEX is more aimed at trying to compete with the Olypmus pen and i will be suprised if it lasts over 2 years.

3 years ago |Seems like a strange move by Sony… these are SAM Lenses and should be compatible with the E-mount if they ever get the A-mounts enabled. If SSM will work then so would SAM.
Perhaps they are refreshing the range for better optics, but this is unlike camera companies, generally Kit lenses are generally left untouched for a long time.
Perhaps this is the first of many to move away from In-Body SSS? That could be a nightmare.
