Interesting notes:
If you were wondering what’s the difference between the enw 18-200mm lens and the old 18-200mm lens read Asai’s (Sony manager) statement at Amateur Photographer: “Costing £670, the new 18-200mm will be £30 cheaper than the existing version. However, it does not offer the same level of image stabilisation and its minimum close focusing distance is 30cm, compared to 50cm on the current model, said Asai.”

2 years ago |I love how the SEL18200LE is just the Tamron rebranded (not particularly a bad thing).
As mentioned in the press release, the SEL18200LE is 12% lighter than the SEL18200.
The Tamron 18-200 is 16.2 ounces, while the SEL18200 is 18.5 ounces. Difference is ~12.3%. Same 62mm filter size too. Also, SuperSteadyShot is replaced by OpticalSteadyShot. Just my observations…

2 years ago |So, The Black lens is lighter but maybe not as good as the silver lens???
And both are in the line-up?
I know we need to see and test both to know if one is sharper than the other, but what kind if shit is this?

2 years ago |Two lenses, slightly different features, different prices, both with good optical quality. You have a choice. Frankly, I love the older 18-200mm Sony lens. Now you have a choice. I’d go for the older one since it looks quite nice with the NEX cameras but it’s up to you what look and features you want.

2 years ago |The resolution of the screen has no impact on the size of the body. 230k is indeed a very low resolution

2 years ago |I’m a NEX user. I am just a photographer, but maybe I’m a fool for using a camera that handles well, is lightweight and reasonably compact. It doesn’t have all the LENSES everyone claims to want, but it has the lenses that I love to use.
robdel
2 years ago |Glad you are happy. [the following is not directed at you, but is a general Sony rant].
I’m a NEX5N owner and it doesn’t have ANY of the lenses I want. Is it too much to ask for 35mm equivalent versions of 28mm, 50mm and 90mm at f1.8 or f2? These FLs have been standard for about FIFTY YEARS so it’s not like we’re asking for something crazy here, like, I don’t know, a decent 21mm [sarcasm]. Every other camera system from a major manufacturer (except, what the Nikon 1?) has these basics covered. The new Fuji X-Pro1 LAUNCHED with these FLs.
It’s my fault for buying into a crippled system, I get it. The sensor on the 5N is fantastic but the lens support is frankly a joke to me. Do we really need incremental upgrades on the body every six months when they have all of four first party primes which are either: an odd focal length, slow aperture, poorly reviewed, very expensive – or some combination of all four!
Sigma has the right idea. If those lenses were a little faster (f1.8) I’d probably buy them. As it stands, f2.8 is too much of a silly compromise for me to purchase. I don’t have to settle for 2.8 if I shoot Nikon, or Canon, of M4/3 or Leica or Ricoh, etc., etc., so why should I bother?
Note: I am not even asking for PANCAKES here. I just want some decent performance, decent speed lenses here.
Gee, maybe I’ll talk some sense into myself and sell the 5N before the incredibly cheap plastic on the lens gets any more abrasion marks from rubbing against the padded interior of my camera bag.

2 years ago |Agreed.
Actually I feel disrespected as a consumer. I get that we all can use an adapter and other manufacturers lenses, but is that it? What’s the point then? Why not only create a camera for multiple adapters instead of pretending to create a system? There are certain moments that you do want AF and for video purposes it’s nice to have some kind of IS. I have no faith on Sony anymore so I’m just waiting some camera that I like and that fulfill my necessities come up so I can change system. I wished Samsung could create a nice and decent camera because the lenses are there, all the main focal length, fast primes, even some pancakes, etc. another option would be m4/3.

2 years ago |mmmmmmmmmm… the F3 is more like…user friendly camera..I mean, now you can charge via-USB, you now have built-in flash, you have a 180º LCD (although still only usable in landscape mode), you get Full HD (even 24p) and now, for some people, the ability to use the EVF is just great. Good thing for the average consumer. But, what about lenses? SEL18200LE is just…meh, we had already a 18-200, I know, good thing to downsize a little bit. But, seriously…More lenses will make the current user base more happy.
hell…I’m going to flood the Sony channel and that first video of the NEX-F3 with comments like “where are the f***ing lenses for 2012″

To be honest those zoom lenses doesn’t have constant aperture made to had hard time to take pic. I’m ready to spend my cash in proper lens.
Sony please release zoom lenses with constant aperture (f/4) but don’t forget high optics preferred SSM & there are a plenty Sony users who will buy.

2 years ago |F3 looks nice at first glance. Decent grip, not too big, excellent sensor, built in flash ( pretty useless in daylight: GN6 limited at 1/160s ISO200 ), interesting screen, but there are two usability issues:
-reaching the shutter button when the flash is raised seems uncomfortable
-the screen tilts down only 13 degrees now, so the “shooting above the crowd” was sacrificed for “self portrait”
All in all a good step forward compared to C3.
Mike (2)

Simon
2 years ago |Does that mean we’ll get two more NEX lenses this year:
- Black SEL30M35 E30mm F3.5 macro
- Black SEL55210 E55-210mm F4.5-6.3 telephoto

I know I’ve listed three lenses, but I’m not convinced they are great with numbers.
Simon
2 years ago |Ans while I’m on a rant/roll…
Who at Sony thought they needed another kit lens for A-Mount?
I guess there are only…
- 18-55mm
- 16-80mm
- 16-105mm
- 18-200mm
There are a number of lenses on people’s wishlist that are not available in A-Mount, bit an 18-135 isn’t one.
It does make you wonder about the leadership within Sony (cameras). They appear to be a bit lost.
Sky_walker
2 years ago |That’s the first walk-around lens for Sony with build-in AF motor. (excluding 16-50 which well… hardly works as walk-around due to being only 50mm at long end).
This lens isn’t a bad choice, especially if the optical quality will be good. Sony this ways re-assures it’s position in best system for people looking for one-time lens purchase. It’s not good for them financially, but it’s not entirely dumb decision
Simon
2 years ago |I think this really demonstrates a real lack of forward thinking on Sony’s behalf.
The 18-55mm, 16-80mm and 16-105mm are all pretty recent lenses. It’s not like this is new technology, as Nikon and Canon managed years ago to even remove the AF screw drive from the body.
Sky_walker
2 years ago |Both of them longer zooms are year 2007.
I agree that 18-135mm isn’t an anticipated lens, but I don’t think releasing it was garbage. At least: I’m not ready to say it as long as I don’t see any tests. If it’s superior to 16-105 than certainly it’ll be a nice choice for many people looking for walk-around lens. Especially if it has DMF as Dyxum wrote (which would be extremely surprising – I’m almost certain it’s just a copywriter mistake).
Catalin
2 years ago |I don’t like the fact that the NEX-F3 is quite a lot bigger than the NEX-C3. I can bet the NEX-F5 will be quite a lot bigger too. Stupid. They probably did this to comply with the “bigger must be better” consumer false assumptions.

I really liked (and still like) the pretty individual and operation oriented look of the 700/850/900. The Lotus Eater
2 years ago |Prices always come down after launch. The 500D is nearly 3 years old now, so it’s a stange comparison to make. However, the A37 will have better performance, better image quality, better viewfinder…
You’d be better off comparing the A37 to the Nikon D3200… that one costs £650 with kit lens.

Why the hell they don’t release cheap prime lenses for E mount, for ex. a 35/1.8? Whe don’t need more cameras! We need affordable fast primes!!!
BJ
2 years ago |I wouldn’t call these cameras unnecessary. They’re great cameras at their price point. It seems like Sony’s going to update their cameras on a yearly basis(similar to Apple) and it’s something we’re just going to have to accept.
I’m pretty sure EVERYONE wants more lenses and I’m pretty sure Sony hears our desperate cries, but for whatever reason, the lens lineup for E-mount is just progressing slowly.

Sky_walker

2 years ago |how is F3 better tha 5N
now 5N only $50 more
Chad
2 years ago |The F3 has everything the 5N has, plus a built-in flash and I would argue better handling with the increase in size. I loved my 5N but found it less than optimal to grip compared to the 7, which the F3 is closer to in size.
The F3 also has an improved processor over the 5N, USB charging and the 180 flip screen.
So why buy a 5N unless you prefer the smaller size and no built-in flash?
Matt
2 years ago |5n has better video. It also has a touch screen. Electronic first curtain shutter, can’t seem to find that spec anywhere for the F3. But the F3 does look pretty nice, especially happy with the EVF add-on-ability.
Chad
2 years ago |I certainly hope the F3 has first curtain shutter.
I’m also seeing conflicting data on the low ISO, is it 100 or 200?
Video will be better on the F3 as long as it doesn’t overheat. I never bothered using it on my 5N because of that.
Catalin
2 years ago |The NEX-F3 does not have ISO 100, in-camera lens correction and 1080/60p video. The NEX-C3 had worse JPEGs than the 5n, hopefully it is not the case anymore (except ISO 100). It also doesn’t have a touch screen (which I find VERY convenient especially for focusing). It’s 45g heavier (90g/40% heavier than the C3) and a lot bigger. Not for me, sorry. If they keep making bigger and bigger bodies I will switch to m43.
Rooru S.
2 years ago |so you begin talking about ISO and JPEGs…and later states that if they increase body size, you will switch to m43? So you’re not after image quality after all…
Rooru S.
2 years ago |And sorry for repeating after twice
Catalin
2 years ago |Not sure if you looked at the E-M5 samples. Those are every bit as good as the NEX-5n (that I own). When Olympus will use that sensor in a smaller camera, the NEX will not have any advantage anymore.
Chad
2 years ago |Different strokes I guess. I’m in NEX for the APS-C sensor, not for the tiniest bodies, which never made sense to me given the size of the lens offerings. In my view, it only makes sense to have a really small body when the lens telescopes completely in, like the old Contax T 2 and 3, or the Ricoh GR, Leica Minilux, etc.
But for now, there is a sweet spot of compact size and high performance and I think cameras like the NEX-7 and now the F3 are right there at.
The E-M5 is great kit but I like using my legacy glass at focal lengths closer to 35mm equivalent, as opposed to 2x on m4/3. Again, different strokes. If you are only interested in current AF lenses then maybe you should be in m4/3.

2 years ago |In the NEX-F3 video, the guys seemed to imply that the original SEL18200 was meant more for video recording. They said the bigger size offered a better focus ring more suited for video. Not the best reasoning, but it does make some sense.
The new lens seems better mainly because it’s smaller. The optics between the Tamron and the original 18-200mm were very comparable. Both had it’s optical pros and cons, but neither one trumped the other. I had the SEL18200 and the thing was just huge. I wore it proudly like a gold chain necklace.

Chad
2 years ago |All this bitching makes me laugh. Must be some serious trolling going on today.
The F3 looks like a super smart move by Sony. They have recognized that the tiny bodies come at a sacrifice in usability and have wisely moved the NEX line in the direction of better handling and less hobbling of features on the low end.
This camera looks like the absolute best value on the market @ $599 and I will be recommending it to all the soccer moms looking to ditch their bulky SLRs in favor of something smaller.
Rooru S.
2 years ago |I think…the trolling comes from Sony with the “new SEL18200LE” because they release a second SEL18200 lens in less than 3 years in the market, and this becomes the third for the whole E-mount lineup.
Sony knows we are eager for new lenses offerings, but not redundant lenses and yet, they offer another superzoom. We have already many superzoom lenses.

2 years ago |Maybe, now that Sony have got that lot (which, judging by the survey, not a lot of people want) out of the way, they might..just might…give us A65/A77 owners the firmware we have been begging for for so long. Improved Jpeg engine etc. Come on Sony…..Forgotten us so soon?????

Who is the brainless vacuum in charge of Sony design philosophies?
________
Dear Sony,
Have you considered putting less effort towards features that make people become bad photographers, and put more effort into features that allow people to become better photographers? It’s just a thought, but you might be interested to learn that we could live without the gimmicks, and gladly trade them for a real wired remote that doesn’t lock out all shooting features beyond single shot. We’d like a good flash system that works well with SLTs too. We’d like multiple resolutions, sweep pano, and smart TC in RAW mode. We want intervalometer and time lapse built into the camera OS. We want SLT mirrors that can flip up for option to shoot without them. We want rear screen with full articulation in vertical shooting. We want HSS wireless flash transmitter that works on every camera and we want it to take the same batteries as the flashes do. We want NEX to shoot wireless flash without a delay and full compatibility for all units. We want NEX-7 to have diagonal scrolling on the control wheel. We want NEX to allow image review in magnified view. We want higher quality optical viewfinders to stop the smearing in the beautiful EVF. We want the OLED to rotate in all directions, rather than just horizontal. We want a menu system that makes sense, and doesn’t change with every camera. We want a lock feature for video button. We want manual audio controls. We want an extension cable for the 5″ accessory monitor, and of course we want tethering to control the system from a distance.
We don’t want gimmicks. We don’t want a dozen cameras and lenses that do practically the same thing.
Thank you kindly,
Loyal Alpha user of 25 years.

Clyde
2 years ago |Who will benefit from a “feature” that teaches the user to become a bad photographer?
Put that crap on camera phones and P&S. Redirect the assets devoted to creating it, and put them towards real features that should have been on every camera years ago.

2 years ago |Oh… and we want constant aperture zooms, even if they must sacrifice range or size. We want HQ primes, and we don’t give a rats ass what color they are as long as they look like a unified cohesive system and not a rag tag fugitive fleet of kludged up bottom feeders.

2 years ago |Wow, yet another amateur camera!!!!
How many cameras can you have in the $500 to $1,000 price range?
This explains why Sony will not last long in the DSLR business. In the last few years they keep releasing new models for amateurs while ignoring the serious hobbyists /professionals. There is no growth path as one’s skills and interest increases.
IMHO this is yet another indication of where their true interest is. They have abandoned the serious hobbyist / professional market to Canon & Nikon despite their claims otherwise.

2 years ago |disappointing? Like… in what?
Only thing I found somewhat disappointing was high-ISO performance. Though as 95% of my shots are sub-ISO400: I couldn’t care less.
Joopey21
2 years ago |That’s my disappointment exactly. I say about 70% of my shots are between ISO800 and ISO1600. I shoot a lot of church related events where the lighting is extremely bad. I am not a big fan of the electronic view finder either.
I think its a nice camera but not a desirable upgrade from the A700. It seems to me that Sony was heading in the right direction with the A700/850/900 and they just needed to continue building and improving on that. Long long term, EVF and SLT may be the future, but it’s going to take us some time to make that transition.

And am I wrong to pronounce NEX as one word like REX or TEX? Both guys in the vid always spell it out one letter at a time N-E-X (pronounced “en-ee-ex”). What’s the correct pronunciation?

2 years ago |After Sony realease the sel 18-200, Tamron got the wonderful idea to propose a 18-200 lens.. and because Sony have understand that nex users don’t have enough lenses.. Sony had the wonderful idea to propose a new lens : a 18-200 lens !!! but smaller and black !!
I’m sure that if we continue to say we don’t have enough different lenses, Sony will have an other wonderful idea : what about an other 18-200 but this time a pink square lens
3 different 18-200 lenses is not enough !! everyone with me !! WE WANT AN OTHER 18-200 AND WHY 2 OR 3 OTHERS !!
This is all we need for the nex 7.. that is the strong of a camera which propose the wonderful possibility to changer lenses : we can replace a 18-200 by a 18-200 !!! YES

2 years ago |Ok, so if i understand this correctly, Sony just released:
- a lens which already exists twice (18-200 Sony, 18-200 Tamron, and now 18-200 Sony/Tamron.)
- a nex that already exists twice (NEX 3, NEX C3, and now NEX F3)
- an slt that already exists twice (SLT33, SLT35 and now SLT37)
Might this 3 x 3 story be a publicity stunt for an upcoming A99 / NEX9?
But seriously, i am (still) planning on buying a NEX 7, expecting Sony to release a quality zoom some day. But as time goes by and my trip (reason for wanting a new cam) comes closer i find myself looking at others systems more and more…
I still think the NEX 7 will be a joy to have, but looking at the way Sony puts their resources to work i’m starting to have real doubts about the NEX system as a whole…
