Sony A77 1.02 versus1.03 comparison (+ review at Amateur Photographer)
Sony A77 Movie Test from lraphael on Vimeo.
Our reader Simon read an interesting Sony A77 1.02 versus 1.03 firmware comparison test on one of the HK popular magazine PC Magazine. And here is the list of the improvements:
1. Response time
Turn on 3.2s 2.8s
Turn off 7.3s 6.3s
EVF/LCD 0.8s 0.6s
Format SD 11.4s 7.6s
2. Continuous shot, no. of photos record within 10 seconds
Sandisk SDHC Extreme Pro 8G
# of pic 30 46
3. Noise
Although the magazine comments the noise level is the same, but from their print out, I found that v1.03 preserve much more details, especially starting from ISO 6400.
Our reader Mark found the new A77 review published on the latest Amateur Photographer magazine (it is not online, it is on paper only):”Just thought you might be interested that the A77 scored 90 out of 100 in this weeks AP. Some text from the Verdict:
The specification is backed up by solid performance in colour rendition, resolution detail at lower sensitives, a wide dynamic range and a responsive and accurate AF system. The only real downside to speak of regarding the use of a fixed translucent mirror is that doing so comprises the camera’s ability to handle noise levels in low light.
Hope this is of use to you and keep up the good work!”

8 months ago |I’m curious how via FW is possible to substantially (1.5x times) increase SD card write speed.
Formating time 7.6s still seems bit too long. A900 could format my 32GB cards within 2-3s.
Maxwell
8 months ago |Not a big issue. Just felt the time for turn off was long.
I did check my Sony A700, turn on is around 1 second. And turn off
around 2,5 seconds.
Anyone with NEX-5N here who knows the turn on and turn off times?
ageha
8 months ago |The NEX-5N goes on instantly, not more than a sec.
Mike
8 months ago |Probably because once you tell the camera to turn off (shut down, actually – I’m told it’s running Linux), you have to wait until this is finished to be able to turn it on again. Hence, if you turn it off in the wrong moment, this can cost you up to 10s (= a missed shot in the worst case)…
ageha
8 months ago |It’s certainly not running Linux! lol
Yup, I’m worried about that too if you turned it off accidentally and you want to switch it on immediately.

Personally, I didn’t go download that code and examine the contents; did you?
From what I saw, however, it looked more like developer-tools — which might be used to work on virtually any sort of firmware/microcode, and might run under any OS (tho this was clearly Linux) — rather than an OS/distro.
That said – an embedded Linux *is* a very-viable code platform, so it could be…

Continuous shot, no. of photos record within 10 seconds
Sandisk SDHC Extreme Pro 8G
# of pic 30 46
REVENGE
8 months ago |Yeah, it’s not particularly clear what is meant right there.
Best guess is that it’s the # of photos captured and written to card over a period of 10 seconds of holding down the shutter button? It indicates that a combination of JPEG processing and / or disk write performance has increased.

8 months ago |FWIW, I’ve had my A77 for 2 weeks now (on FW 1.02) and have been out twice on shoots. My first impressions are:
1. Fantastic, crisp images up to ISO 1600. I haven’t been out on any low light shoots yet. Excellent colour reproduction and fabulous dynamic range.
2. The camera is slow to turn on. The EVF immediately shows the image but after a second or so it flashes and then displays all the shot info (f/, shutter speed, histogram, etc)
3. My Sigma 10-20 HSM autofocus doesn’t work with the camera. The Zeiss 16-80 AF does work.
4. The camera is really nice to hold and very intuitive. I’ve upgraded from an A33 and I’ve only had to refer to the user manual once. The menu system and button layouts are excellent.
5. The EVF is incredible quality. My mate has a D7000 and he honestly didn’t even notice it wasn’t an OVF until I put the info screen and level gauge onto the display.
6. The buffer is big enough to contain, and write about 2 seconds of quick burst shots. If you keep on and off the shoot button for short bursts (as you would in a real life situation) you could keep going all day.
7. Can’t wait for 1.03 improvements. I’m over the moon already and the new firmware can only improve things.
Overall, I think the A77 is a fantastic camera. I’m annoyed about my Sigma lens as there aren’t that many great very wide angles out there but I’m hoping the compatibility might be fixed.
Cheers!

8 months ago |“2. The camera is slow to turn on. The EVF immediately shows the image but after a second or so it flashes and then displays all the shot info (f/, shutter speed, histogram, etc)”
How slow is it? (in seconds)
Dave Cox
8 months ago |I haven’t measured it exactly but I’d say in the order of 2 seconds. Interestingly, if you let the camera go onto power saving mode (instead of turning it off) the reaction time is much quicker, about a second or so. The A33 used to take the same time for both (and both were quicker). I really doubt that this turn on time will be an issue for me as I’m a landscape photographer but if I were doing action/sports it could be annoying.
acolyte
8 months ago |Yes, I wonder who to blame – the EVF?
Oh well, can’t have everything I guess :s
David
8 months ago |Great info Dave.
The buffer thing is something I noticed too. On paper it sounds poor, but its not meant to be a 12fps movie mode. Shoot short bursts at 12fps. Use your skill and instinct to time bursts around action and you get no delays at all.
Simon_P
8 months ago |According to my personal experience, and also quote from magazine, A77 can do 12fps in the very first second, then the burst speed pull the leg by the limited buffer size/card write speed

8 months ago |“3. My Sigma 10-20 HSM autofocus doesn’t work with the camera”
This is Sigma issue, I think. Take your lens to authorized Sigma service and they will change the bayonet (I think), maybe something else too, for free.

Dave Cox
8 months ago |I can’t find any authorised Sigma dealers/warranty/repair in Australia. CR Kennedy has gone bust. If I buy a new lens will it be compatible without the repair? Sigma US won’t answer my e-mails (sent a week ago when I first noticed the issue).

A65 raw testing shot in Moscow Sony shop – my friend walked around with same speed – 13 fotos made really quick (not in 10 fps mode – in Hi mode of usual shoot) then real slow down. And btw in my A580 always Hi enabled shooting mode and no problem to made 1 shoot – in 65 in Hi I made at least 3 – too light button comparing to A580. And there is inhand foto af A65 and 77 – and 77 wins – all fingers Get a grip – on 65 place just for 4 fingers.
A77 was in black screen condition so it was only for viewnig and touching.

The ONLY time my system shuts down is to change the battery. And even that’s a hassle.
A camera that isn’t ready to shoot instantly is no better than a brick in hand. But hey, I’m one of those old geezers that come from the land of Hassy Oly Mino Niko Leica Cano manual wind cameras. We didn’t have ON/OFF buttons back then. And if the meter battery went dead then exposure was calculated by experience and memory or at least the Sunny16 rule.
Haha boy things sure have changed a lot since then.

On that note, I do realize that sometimes turning on/off continuously may consume more battery than keeping it running XD

Almazar80
8 months ago |It’s not the AF motor. It’s the screw drive lens. If you want less noise use the SSM/HSM focusing lenses. How about doing some research before making comments of little value?
Almazar80
8 months ago |I meant to say that the AF motor working with the screw drive focusing is noisy. It’s the same thing with every Sony and Minolta AF lenses. Now that there is a mike to capture the focusing sound, people notice.

How’s that for useful information?

Oh dear GAWD I just listened to it again and can’t imagine the laughs that would get making that same noise when filming a bride or a fashion show ahahahahahahahahah OMG!

Yes, that’s happen before, and Sigma has a mixed record responding to incompatibility issues in the past.
I fear it’s going to be a problem and photographers need to wait a little and see how the third party compatibility shakes out if they own non Sony optics and other things.

Comments on user experience is not the same as complaining either. We should encourage these comments, and more to come hopefully.

8 months ago |I wouldn’t say improving response times is just bug-fixing.
And perhaps you need a refresh on the definition of “complain”.
verb (used without object)
1.
to express dissatisfaction, pain, uneasiness, censure, resentment, or grief; find fault: He complained constantly about the noise in the corridor.
So yes, I see a lot of complaining. Sure, complaints should be encouraged /if/ they actually raised valid points. But after the 14789th person complaining about the AF noise and getting answer, I was hoping it would stop…

Maybe turn off times is about to replace the high-iso-pissing-contest as the premier benchmark of DSLR’s?
redfern
8 months ago |Those ISO 3200 samples on Flickr look as good as anything I get out of the A580 at the same ISO. Personally, I think that’s a really good achievement. My opinion of this camera has just gone up a lot.
The shutdown time is a little oddly long, but the other times don’t put me off too much. As for the EVF switching time, I would probably just leave it in EVF mode all the time, anyway, so it wouldn’t need to do the automatic switching when you raise your eye to it. I’d only use the LCD when I had time to switch to it manually. I figure that’s not much different than having an OVF DSLR and switching to Live View when I needed it (which takes probably about half a second on my A580, so it would turn out to be the same in terms of delays).

8 months ago |I have anticipated that I will be using a lot of batteries so I have 6 just in case. After years of changing film after 24 or 36 exposures, changing a battery is a piece of cake.

P.S. I’m maniac i know – but it was Eros Expo in Moscow and there was too many pretty girls around.
monkeyfacemcbride
8 months ago |5500 shots per day!! Just for comparison – back in the days of 35mm film that would have been 152.77 rolls of velvia @ £5.50 each (£840.27) plus processing @ £6.50 per roll (£993.05) giving a total cost of £1833.33 in a day(!) or nearly three times the cost of the camera. Incidentally, for an 8 hour shoot thats one shot every 5.24 seconds. Bet you’re glad they invented digital SLRs
acolyte
8 months ago |Yeah my first dance competition I took 5500 photos just because I suck. The second one I only took 3000 though. The 5500 photos did eat through 3 batteries for A700.
Btw the Eros Expo this year happened to be 30 minutes away from my home – what is it about anyway? not for under 18?

8 months ago |Amateur Photographer reported getting over 1,000 shots on a battery charge over 2 days in their A77 test. That was with GPS enabled.
Alexey Ozerov
8 months ago |I couldnt imagine how they shoot dance for example. And I’m really glad about digital shooting – if on static shoot 15 – 20% of images deleted right in ACR – in dinamic shoots may be even 50 – 70% of unlucky foto.

8 months ago |My DSLR takes < 0.1 seg. from Off to Shot =) and 0 seg On to Off.
Steve Jones
8 months ago |I’ve now read the Amateur Photographer review on the A77, and ii can only be described as extremely positive. Amateur Photographer usually puts test reports online after an interval for print sales, so it’s worth looking out for in the future. To put the overall score of 90% in perspective, the Nikon D7000 scored 85% as did the Pentax K5 and the Canon 70D was 83%. In my experience, Amateur Photographer don’t normally put big scoring gaps between cameras of the same class, so a 5% difference is quite a lot.
Of course a lot depends on the personal preferences of individual reviewers (Tim Coleman in this case). He seemed very well taken by the capabilities of the EVF and the general build, responsiveness and behaviour of the camera. He was also quite impressed with the utility of the “electronic Teleconverter”. With the EVF he openly speculates whether Sony are now signalling the long term demise of the OVF in favour of EVFs across the industry.
The one slight downside, as noted elsewhere is the slight loss of sensitivity compared to the Nikon D7000, Pentax K5 and A580 with regard to high ISO performance. However, notably he considered it comparable to the A55 in this respect and the issue is identified (correctly in my view) as due to the SLT mirror. However, it’s not deemed a huge difference (the reviewer quotes DXOmark findings).
To those who worry about battery longevity, he got 1,000+ shots out of one charge with the GPS turned on all the time. That’s better than I get from my A700.
Raghav
8 months ago |Thanks for this post Steve. Very Informative.
Makes you wonder if only the sensor had excellent High ISO performance too… This camera would have been a legend. Maybe a slightly larger buffer too… Damn. Damn. Damn…
Steve Jones
8 months ago |The sensor has as good high ISO performance (at comparable output size) as any other APS-C sensor in use. It’s the half-stop loss in sensitivity caused by the SLT that’s the issue. Even if sensor manufacturers could suddenly improve sensor performance by half a stop (a big challenge), and SLT camera would still be proportionately worse. The only way it could be improved is by reducing the proportion of light sent to the AF module, or by finding a way of eliminating it completely. I suspect that the latter approach will win out.
mike_2008
8 months ago |In real world shooting half a stop of noise is not really a big deal at all in my experience, so it’s right to say its there but not to exaggerate the importance.
One sensor PDAF is not working really well yet, the new nikon 1 has it but it doesn’t work in low light, I guess there’s too much noise on the sensor… I think a dedicated AF module will still be a more effective AF tool for some time to come. But I’d be happy if i was wrong.
monkeyfacemcbride
8 months ago |Normally Amateur Photographer aren’t all that happy about anything that Sony do and in a comparative review of photographic equipment involving an A900, a bucket and a telegraph pole they would have given the A900 third place because they didn’t like the font for the switch lettering, its the reason I stopped buying the magazine. But i will buy this one and hopefully my faith in the magazine will be restored. Incidentally the online photographer website listed the A77 as the 9th most desireable camera on the planet (not just DSLR, this includes hassleblad et all) – fyi just below it in 10th… is the Nikon D3x!

Is it possible to be done by firmware upgrade?
