Sony A77 shipment delayed in US, Europe and Asia!!!
I just got very reliable info from my sources saying that Sony Japan decided to delay the shipment of the A77 until very end October /early November. The new exact shipment date has still to be notified. Meanwhile SonyStore.com (Click here) removed the preorder option! Sony Uk (Click here) says the camera is “temporary unavailable”. Sony Germany (Click here) and Sony France (Click here) say that shipment will start in mid-November. It’s easy to guess that the reason for the delay are the issues with the current firmware. Sony Japan wants to ship the new cameras with the newer 1.03 firmware version which will fix the various bugs.
It hink that’s a wise decision from Sony! Now let’s hope they do not repeat the same mistake with “my” Sony NEX-7!

Almazar80
2 years ago |So making sure that a product is working properly before selling it en masse, after discovering that there are problems with the initial shipment, is now bad? Trying to lessen consumer disappointment, at the cost of immediate sales, is bad? That instead of launching a flawed product, they do the prudent thing and fix it before makeing it widely available? Seems to me they learned from the 5N problem and wnat to make sure the product is ready before selling it. If that’s bad, then so be it. Imagine the angst that people will have if they receive faulty cameras. Better fix the problem before wide availability. A wise decision, even if it does not meet your timetable.

Sony is doing the responsible thing by making sure they listen to feedback and correct issues before making product available for purchase. Sony doesn’t listen to people like you, let alone hire them, because they’d torpedo their line if they did.

People where waiting so long for the A77 to come out, I don’t see a Reason to be this impatient now, i mean the worst case scenario i can imagine is a delay of 1 maybe 2 months, and seriously that isn’t that long, if you own a A700 and an A580 I don’t see why it would be so urgent.

2 years ago |Of course. The vast majority of users wouldn’t know how to update firmware.
We are enthusiasts, on a photo rumour website. We read about this stuff for a hobby.
A lot of people will just buy a camera and use it. And crashes, clicks, glitches etc.. users will complain and Sonys reputation will be damaged because of it.
Unless it auto-updates or syncs like an ipod, I bet less than 20% of people would update firmware. Everyone will have issues. Everyone will complain.
Maveric19
2 years ago |I beg to differ. All it takes is connecting your camera to the computer and following very simple instructions. When I purchased my a700 shortly thereafter I had to upgrade my firmware and it was a simple and painless task. I still believe it was a great and smart idea to delay the product versus having all these cry babies bitching and complaining about their a77 and bad mouthing Sony in the process. When the camera finally comes out all the crap will be forgotten and people will have nothing to bitch about.
Err0xx
2 years ago |And I beg to differ with you. As of a 2010 technology poll listed on Engadget, it was stated that around 78% of iPhone owners had never synced their iPhones with their computer. If those kind of statistics apply to the iPhone, which revolves around iTunes, I would imagine that the number of cameras that have been connected to PCs for the purpose of upgrading firmware is much, much smaller.
Many people, even DSLR users (My parents and aunts/uncles included) connect their cameras to their computer, copy their pictures over, disconnect their cameras and thats that.
I’m glad Sony is correcting this issue now, as many people wouldn’t have the fixes via firmware if Sony didn’t do it for them.

2 years ago |Actually, they are crooks. They have a deal with the shipping company to hold packages and charge a release fee. Simple as that.
My package was held “for VAT and duty purposes” and I paid £45 to release it. When I got the parcel, NO evidence it had been through customs. British customs ALWAYS put a sticker on to say it was held and cleared.
And checked my credit card statement.. guess who the £45 went to… it wasn’t customs!
Foolishly I ordered another lens from them and the exact same happened. I checked their ebay feedback and lots of people mentioning small additional charges – £45, £35 etc.
You’ll get your package, but not until after they’ve stung you with hidden fees under false pre-tenses.

2 years ago |I’m glad they are going to get it right. You could tell something was amiss for a while there, but once the ver.1.03 comes out it will probably be good. I do not have the money for the purchase right now anyway, so when I do, all will be smoothed over. I honestly think that this camera, the a77 and a65, are going to be excellent once smoothed over with firmware adjustments. I imagine that even the audio controls in video mode will be manually adjustable once ver. 1.03 is on the camera. It is as if Sony saw the initial negative reactions and complaints and went back to the drawing board on firmware. If you see manual audio adjustments in this new firmware, then this is what they did.
monkeyfacemcbride
2 years ago |If we haven’t seen 1.03 by now its possible that we wont see it at all. Bearing in mind the limited circulation of the release, its more likely that is just 1.02 plus a bugfix or two and they want widespread testing. I suspect that within a couple of weeks we’ll see 1.04 released on a wider circulation which will contain more improvements. From my standpoint, when they announced the A77 I didn’t think they’d be available in retail until December here and got pleasantly surprised when I got one within a couple of week of the release, so to my mind I at least owe them the latitude to fix the problems while I shoot away with 1.02. Yes it may not be the most responsive software in the world, some people have crashes etc etc (mines fine so far…maybe just lucky) but its certainly very usable and produces fine shots.

I’ll have mine shortly( what’s another month?)
ef
2 years ago |Seems fishy to me, if v. 1.03 fits everything then why does it take a month plus to just upload new software? I think you are right there is something else they need to fix, hope it is just software.
alphafan2011
2 years ago |Well, don’t know why everyone wonders why kev is angry?
It’s a general problem, its not only the delay, it’s the thing that Sony claims to have “fastest burst, highest resolution” and so on, and then instead of strengthen those claims they bring out all new cams with some nice problems, a lot on the A77 (and maybe A65 too!) and the nice clicking “feature” on the NEX-5N … lets wait for the surprise we get with the NEX-7
So I definately can understand kev! Of course waiting one month longer isn’t that big deal, but together with the number of big errors (its not a small problem in the menu or with one special lens, there are huge general problems, what you can read about A77).
And I also can understand if someone sais, that he want to buy a new nice camera in the end of Summer and then Sony comes with this nice killer-cam … you want this, yes! But then the first results, bad high iso performance, 12 fps burst for 12 frames only, those many many errors. Then its also clear, that you can change your mind and go to another brand like the D7000 or 7D, which both are also cheaper
Almazar80
2 years ago |The bad ISO performance was always overblown. It’s not greatly worse that the Canon 7D or the D7000 with proper processing. Let Sony fix the problem instead of continuing to sell a problematic but fixeable camera. Even Apple had to contend with the Iphone 4 antenna problem. Delaying further sales to make sure that the product is better – amazing what peopl comlain about.
alphafan2011
2 years ago |well, its not overblown, look at the pics, also with 1.02 firmware. they dont have more noise compared to 7D and D7000, thats right, but especially the Jpeg NR is too much for a camera in that price range. Of course, everyone who wants to buy that camera and is fixed with that goal unimportant which results and problems this camera has or will still get … everyone of them will tell, “I only shoot RAW” … but to be honest, its not always like a photoshooting, you also catch your can and shoot, and most of the people use also jpeg for it, definately! You dont want to process every photo and especially with the huge amount of noise in the A77 raw pics, you have to process every pic on your own to get acceptable results, batch converting wouldnt be that easy I think!
And well, yes you are right. Apple did something wrong too, seems to be a general problem, early buyers are used as beta testers
So the problem is not, that people complain about everything, its more that the companys like Sony and Apple should test their products first on their own, especially the versions they want to sell to the people, not the pre-alpha models or special review samples!
In my opinion of course you can say, hey great, whats a month, or two … ok maybe I will only get it after christmal, but a christmas present in January will also be a nice deal
And hey, those bugs are ok, I dont need fast displays, and AF problems are ok, if they dont disturb too much … restart and it works again …
BUT, there are also people like me, who have to think about it a long time which cam to buy, cause as a student you dont have that much money, so you have to choose carefully!
And if you have to choose carefully, you evaluate, weather those “best, biggest, fastest” claims of Sony are real and especially, really needed or if you go for example with a D7000 for only 840 Euro where Nikon never claimed to have the best in its class, but produces a well balanced camera!
So my question is only, why doesnt try Sony those cams earlier? Why dont they say from the beginning that the cam has those features but will be completely ready only in November … no, they present it in August and then the waiting begins ^^ probably it will be fully available everywhere in the beginning or middle of December, so lets wait. but in my opinion a bad policy!
Vlad
2 years ago |Well, that’s obviously a guess, but the cameras were already delayed by the earthquake. So they probably rushed it.
Almazar80
2 years ago |Honestly, the output doesn’t look that bad to me, but that’s just my opinion. Now, I don’t look at every pixel to see if there is something I can complain about. I just take pictures.
As I said earlier, even the D7000 had some initial problems. And as for the D7000 price, if it was released at that price it would have been a wonder. I seem to recall that it originally sold for a bit more.
David
2 years ago |Yawn.. the noise isn’t bad at all. The 7D is still absolutely useable.. and the a77 is the same performance. But it has a whole stop more dynamic range and better colours. Everyone seems to forget this.
alphafan2011
2 years ago |yes, everyone forgets this, because it was only achieved at ISO 50
with the same Iso its not better!
And yes, the A77 isnt that much worse in high Iso performance compared to the 7D, but it is. and the 7D will get an successor soon I think, that’s then the real competition for the A77.
and @ Almazar80: I also just take pictures of course and Im not only looking for every missing detail in the A77, but from ISO 800 upwards its getting significant NR smearing!
And I want to concentrate on the picture itself, not trying to get acceptable ISO and so on, only shoot and have a nice pic. If you do it with the A77 for example with ISO 3200 (no, nothing like 16000, its mor advertising, than useful), you have in Jpeg a lot of detail loss thanks to the smearing and in Raw a lot of colour noise which isnt that easy to remove in that strong amount! And if I pay 1200 Euro for such a cam, I dont want to sit hours and hours behind a monitor only to get comparable results for example to the NEX-5N … if I want to sit there, then only for art post production and modification, composing and so on!
Maybe you are different, and its ok, maybe some people have more time for that or only print in small pics, then probably thats not such a big deal, but I plan also to print some posters for friends and then you see every smearing on the posters.
Maveric19

Snapperbox
2 years ago |The word here is “major” but they didn’t say “did not suffer”…
Even if the factory alone is still operating, the roads and infrastructure has already been affected and will definitely cause problems in delivery.
acolyte
2 years ago |Major damage may mean no destruction of equipment and so on, but faulty equipment is possible, and as Snapperbox said, roads and infrastructure, which may include electricity, water, and gas. It may not delay production by 6 months but 1 month is possible.
And I’m not trying to pick a fight here, but please understand, as Snapperbox said, that being a spoilt kid does not help. You are but one in 6 billion in the world. If you are used to be treated as king, then.. tough luck. World does not work that way.
Doesn’t only apply to Japan’s and Thailand’s damages, but also to the required timelines for production. Working in both software and hardware companies, things often doesn’t go the way they are planned. If they are, costs would be lower.
kev
2 years ago |Very sad but please stop with the sentimental arguments please. The important phrase is ‘operating as normal’. Kind of makes your argument redundant doesn’t it? *Message to myself* Must not post any negative stuff about Sony on here anymore. Too many sensitive souls!
Almazar80
2 years ago |Even if the factory is operating normally, the electricity needed to keep the factory running may not be available for sustained periods. They may not be able to send the products out to the air cargo terminals or ports. They may not be able to get parts due to the roads and bridges under water. A factory being operational is only part of the production/delivery chain.

Do you get the drift here? Sony is not alone in having to fix a camera after it has been released. With the complexity of these machines, problems can occur. What’s good here is that Sony, like Canon and Nikon, are keen to fix the machines they sell.
By the way, how do you define “testing to the max?” Please enlighten us with the methodologies that you will be using, test criteria, etc. After demonstrating your superior aptitude at ensuring that products are defect and error free, you can perhaps be hired by Sony.

2 years ago |All this fanboy talk is crap, I have about £4k invested in sony fit lenses flashes etc, I’m hardly going to move to nikon, I couldn’t afford to buy the kit again.
Might have been answered already, but will the firmware update improve the noise handling?

2 years ago |Noone outside Sony knows whether image quality improvements will be in there I’m afraid, I’d be very surprised if there wasn’t an NR off option though to allow people perform it in post. Personally I believe that we will see IQ improvements at some point but whether they’ll be in the first service release is debatable, they have bigger fish to fry right now with control lag and lockups. I’m pretty sure there is more to come from this sensor IQ-wise, right now it matches the A55 pretty well and I’d fully expect it to at least match the A580. however I’m just sitting here with fingers crossed that they’ll throw some surprises into the next build to compensate us early adopters.

2 years ago |as a A700 user I totally understand frustration of some.
Sony should have released A700 sucessor minimum a year ago. It is just too long without proper Sony semi-pro camera
I will wait when A77 comes to my country and than decide what to do – leave sony camp or not

2 years ago |People who actually own the camera like it a lot more than people looking at pictures published on websites. Even after several publications and websites sing the praises of the A77, they still interject with their “disappointments.” I’d wait for a camera to get to a store near me, test it out, and if fits my needs, I’ll buy it. If you blow up those old plates that Ansel Adams used I’m pretty sure that you’ll come to the conclusion that those cameras are inadequate for your needs as well.

2 years ago |ive been using it for 2 weeks on a few trips. The camera is amazing and the lens kit produce so sharp & crisp results that i even think about not buying prime lenses within the range of this kit-lens which is a first time for me when using a kit lens!! Great camera i dunno about noise level but the detail in ISO 50-100 is mindblowing for the price

2 years ago |Because of our lack of patience we’ve had our A77 for 2 weeks now! We shot about 300 test shots before feeling confident in using it for its first wedding on 10-1-11.
We shot about 700 photos with the A77 and a Minolta 17-35 2.8-3.5 mostly in very low orange/yellow light before the stock battery ran out and we had to fall back on our 2 A55s (after market batteries and chargers didn’t come in until Monday)The photos were fabulous! all but 2 were useable at a professional level and 1 of the 2 that wasn’t the external flash didn’t fire. The camera performed super fast and the photos were very sharp with excellent color. In our opinion this camera is well worth the price upgrade from the A55s that we already loved. We experienced absolutely zero problems with the camera. I can only guess that the firmware upgrade is to boost the noise reduction at higher ISO settings as the reviews I’ve seen say it’s lousy at higher ISOs.
If you are like us and running out of patience most of the HK ebay sellers are delivering in 3-4 days (we got ours in 2)and you can upgrade the firmware yourself when it comes out.
One recommendation I have for all SONY users… unless you can afford Sony G lenses get Minolta lenses! They will give you way more bang for your buck and last forever! For the same price as a so-so Tamron or Sigma lens you can get a legendary Minolta lens that will yield much better photos on your Sony. Also especially stay away from the big zoom lenses. They are soft on both ends so you are better off buying 2-3 lenses that cover the range you want. Check out a MINOLTA 28-135MM 1:4-4.5, it’s our favorite lens!
If you want to see some test shots taken with the A77 using Minolta lenses;
28-135
17-35
100-300 APO
visit our site http://www.abetterdj.net or if Sony kicks our address off google our handle and you can find it that way
For those of you with patience… it will be well worth the wait! ENJOY!
(not a fanboy, we shot Pentax for 20 years before the A55 came out)

2 years ago |isnt it difficult to use a minolta 100-300 with manual focus on moving objects at 300? :ㅇ or the AF is working on a77?
SonyA77
2 years ago |The Minolta 100-300mm APO is an AF lens. Why would you need to use manual focus? The A77 will auto-focus using ANY Minolta AF lens.

2 years ago |Glad you like the A77.
Mine died 4 times already, it doesn’t happen during shoots, only when you turn off the camera and power it back on after a few minutes.
Had less then 20 photos taken as well.
The removing the battery and re-inserting the battery saved it 3 times.
The 4th time I had to use the Vulcan Death Grip button combo to bring it back to life.
The freezes seems more frequent the more I use the camera. I have a nagging feeling that the bad firmware 1.02 is actually doing bad things to the processor or the PCB. I have shelved the camera, and decided the play the waiting game.

Very wise to wait for 1.03, I would have done exactly that when I heard of the problems.

2 years ago |I’ve read almost everyone’s comments and several folks have asked this same question but no-one has replied and it seems NO-ONE has an answer! I have been looking on different forums for an answer to no avail. It would seem to me with all you knowledgeable folks logged on here that someone would be smart enough to answer the question!
Will the new firmware correct or help the the noise issues at higher ISO’s?
Does anyone have an answer to the above question?
David
2 years ago |Hi Rob,
It might do, but don’t hold your breath. I think the ISO is what it is. It’s not the leap forward in pixel peeping terms that everyone wanted.
But you’ve got the SAME noise performance as last generation (which wasn’t bad to begin with), with 1 stop more dynamic range, better colours AND 8 more megapixels. So overall image quality is still improved a lot.

2 years ago |got a news for y’all – if not already know by some whiners.
as i was buying stuff from b&h yesterday before they close for Yom Kippur, my salesman told me that Sony was there last week to showcase their latest gear “A77″ he said that this is definitely a breakthrough camera and confirmed that it will definitely beat d7000 and 7d as an example he gave me.
for nex-7, he said they mentioned it but did not bring a sample copy.
so why not wait until it is working properly?

2 years ago |To those who have made negative comments need their head tested or shocked!
Sony Japan had a rough ride with natural disasters that have caused many death and lives ruin.
And yet, they carry on regardless making cameras for you and you should be grateful.
Sony did right thing to delay ensuring the products are working at 100% not 90%, they did this to make sure that you’re happy with your new toy.
Have a heart and you will get your brand new camera in hands within a few weeks time to capture those magic moments.
A Sony loyal fan.

2 years ago |Delayed due to massive flooding in Thailand. Sony is a great company but still have not figured out how to control the weather. Being one that has lived through a flood… IT is NO JOKE! be fortunate you dont die but the clean up is HELL too. I have my A900, A55, A700, A850 to keep me nice and occupied while they get a handle on the flooding and shipping and Firmware…. I suggest you do the same because all the whining makes you look like a Horse’s you know what. I my thoughts and prayers goes out to those affected by the floods and those still being affectd by the Tsunami and Quake on 3/11…

2 years ago |Would you ding-dongs get over it? OK the firmware is causing a delay. I’d rather that, than have a crappy experience with a new camera.
Yea I guess I COULD sell ALL the Sony/Minolta glass I have and go get a Nikon… and then what? Buy all new glass?
WTF ever.. I’ll wait a few more weeks for the A77. I’ve waited FOUR YEARS for it.. a couple more weeks isn’t a big deal.

2 years ago |For those of you that already have this wonderful camera we have posted the 1.03 firmware update on our site… http://www.abetterdj.net just got to the SONY/MINOLTA tab. It’s really fast and is supposed to fix all the bugs.
To those of you that have decided to jump ship or are thinking about it…
I have heard from a pretty good source that the delay is not caused by the firmware, it is the flooding in Thailand. Also keep in mind Japan’s recent disasters that pushed the release date back in the 1st place.
After using this camera for 3 weeks I assure you that it is well worth the wait and the money. Our 1st SONY A77 cost us $800 more than we paid for our SONY A55s and we are convinced that it is worth it. We’ve shot almost 5,000 photos including 2 weddings and have sold our last 2 A55s to buy another A77.
For those of you leaving for Canon, Nikon, Pentax, or whoever, I assure you your photos will not be as good as our A77 is putting out with legendary MINOLTA glass! If you get one of their new models you get to work through the bugs just like you would have with the A77
We have photo samples on our site

2 years ago |Someone just sent me a photo of 1 of Sony’s factories in Thailand. It is 50% under water. The caption said the local mayor claims it will take a week to recede and at least 3 months t clean up. Sony is moving production to another factory that was not effected but start up time will be slow.
My source that I was buying for resale from also emailed me that their last shipment every box has water damage and all are going back to Sony with no replacement date promised
