Biggest complaint…body style? Really? I personally think the design of the A99 is incredibly sleek and fresh looking. It looks bad ass, not going to lie here. Also, not mentioning it’s weather sealed, built of magnesium allow construction, and MOST important (for me) INTERNAL IMAGE STABILIZATION! When major features of a camera are not mentioned, and the single biggest complaint is the *looks* is all that’s thrown around in a review, then you know the reviewer (if that is really what Kai is) is obviously biased. On a side note, when people keep comparing this to the Mark III, we’re talking about a camera that’s 1,000 more. For that the A99 offers in specs, come on. Compare prices for similar bodies, and the A99 is so, so, so worth it. It’s why I’ve sold my Mark III and all L glass. Yes, I made the switch because you get more bang for your buck with Sony. Period. I will miss CPS (Canon Professional Services). And Sony should step up and offer the same services to pro’s.
+1 that’s a know fact (their producer is tied to a Canon company)
for example review of OM-D E-M5 (cream de la cream of m43 system and highly praised camera everywhere with many awards) is considered the worst review out of ANY that ever appeared on-line.
For me, E-M5 is the camera of a decade, for them – they didn’t even noticed they had reviewed it, next please….
Digital Rev is funny entertaining channel – but not for serious photographers (hell, their ‘best photographer challenge’ was a complete utter fail with uneducated wanna-be amateurs that (somehow) got into a competition – even my niece could take 10 times better photo with iPhone then majority there – where is professionalism in this channel?)
How does the 99 compare to 5dm3. I was contemplating buying the 5dm3 instead of the 99, but I already had several G and Zeiss lenses. I think the performance of this camera at 3200 and below will be very comparable if not edge toward the 99 for accurate colors and DR. I was wondering what you though of the high iso performance between the two cameras?
I don’t think people realize that the 5D mark 3 has shadow noise banding even at base ISO. That is no go for me. Stick with Sony sensor if you don’t want the A99 (i.e. D600 or D800E).
Fortunately I will be staying with the 99. Its hard to complain about a camera when with a little post editing, I just printed a 5×7 at iso 10000 that was wall worthy. All my initial tests are going to be extreme environments. Action shots in a gym and night time football under the lights (yet to come). My daughter went to a dance and I snapped off a few portraits before leaving. They were exceptional. The color is dead on and the skin tones are beautiful. I have yet to see how the video turns out. I am printing out shots that were not capable with my 850. The focus is top notch on this thing, that is with the 70-200G. I cannot wait to use the dual focus system with this lens.
Hey Poke, I’m still waiting for my A99 to arrive. I’ve sold all my Canon gear on Ebay, and I’m waiting patiently for the A99 to arrive.
If you shoot RAW, this camera is an equal to the Mark III. Download some RAW files (available online), and check out for yourself, and do your own comparisons from home. Bloggers that compare JPG to JPG, only prove the camera manufactures algorithms are better or worse. If you shoot for clients that are paying you for an assignment/job, you don’t shoot JPG. If you shoot stock photography, you don’t shoot JPG. NEVER. I haven’t shot in JPG since the 2nd made Canon digital camera (D60).
The RAW’s that I’ve downloaded from the A99 are on par with the Mark III. And significantly exceed the Mark II. Again, this is comparing a camera that costs $1,000 more than the A99! And, the Mark III has been on the market for awhile, it’s been given firmware updates, and thus new life each release. The A99 barely hit the market. Hasn’t had a firmware upgrade, so do not pay attention to JPG file comparisons that so many websites are doing, especially with a camera that’s been on the market for awhile, has several firmware upgrades, and costs more money (Mark III).
Here’s the deal folks, the A99 is the best bang for the buck. The build quality compared to the DSLR’s in the same price range exceeds (D600) and or matches (D6). The D600′s rear and top plates are made of metal but the front plate is plastic. The D6 is magnesium alloy however, the A99 can shoot up to 1/8000s, vs 1/4000s (6D). The A99 has 100% viewfinder coverage, not the Canon. It also has a higher screen resolution (that tilts & swivels), and you’re able to capture 20% more detail in your photos, with the 24MP sensor. This is all worth the extra few hundred dollars the A99 costs. The Mark III is comparable, but if you’re not already $10,000+ invested in Canon, the Sony is less expensive, and again, on par in terms of build, features and image quality to the Mark III.
And the biggest and most significant feature the A99 has, and why I left Canon and will not switch to Nikon, is the Sony A99 is the ONLY DSLR that has internal image stabilization! Folks, that means you don’t have to spend an extra $1,000+ for a lens that has stabilization! You can use any lens (no matter how cheep or expensive). That in and of itself is what makes the A99 stand out and trump all DSLR’s, including the Canon Mark III. For the price, you just can’t beat the A99. It’s pro level in all aspects. Build, rich in features, image quality, and price.
I dont think the 6d can be comparable to the A99 in any way… The d600 alone already makes it look like a pile of crap to be honest. I’m not sure why anyone would buy it over the d600 unless they have already invested money into canon glass. You’ve made valid reasons why the A99 > canon 6D. But that doesn’t come as a surprise.
However…A99 Vs. D600.. The build quality isn’t bad. Are you saying that you didn’t consider buying it because one of the sides isn’t magnesium? Thats…silly–unless you plan on shooting in some really really harsh conditions. If in the case the a99 is put through such harsh conditions, I have a hunch that the flip out screen would break before d600′s plastic gives you a durability issue.
The a99 is also 700 dollars more than the d600…not a few hundred. I personally find that the D600 has superior IQ and noise performance than the A99. 1/8000 shutter vs 1/4000 is a little nit picky to me also.. Think about the d700… Base iso 200, shutter 1/8000.. If you shot for the same exposure with a D600… Base iso 100, shutter 1/4000. You also didn’t mention the battery life.
The a99 and the d600 are in different price points. You mentioned the built image stabilization in the a99–I agree this is wonderful that sony has this. But I dont really agree with the point made that, ‘no matter what lens you use, cheap/expensive’ is a valid argument in making the claim that the a99 is a superior dslr when compared to the current competitor’s line up. I can already think of a reason why you wouldn’t want to invest in cheap glass to begin with…You won’t be able to utilize the dual auto focus system in the camera.
This means you need to purchase a lens that’s priced up with the other big boys, the trinity / VR / IS lenses that are thousands of dollars more expensive. If you go with a cheap lens, then you’re really just dwarfing yourself. I understand that sony is planning on expanding their compatibility for the system, but I dont think it will be done timely.
I really looked forward for the a99…But I dont think it’s something that can be anywhere near regarded as the best bang for your buck…

Whether max shutter speeds are limiting or not depends how one shoots, of course.
I’m constantly topping 1/8000 as I shoot a lot with f1.4 lenses during the day. There are times where even ISO 50 and 1/8000 aren’t enough. But for people who rarely shoot faster than f8, it’s probably not an issue.

J,
Concerning dual auto focus system. I never mentioned it, because I would never use it. For the last 10 yrs photographing, I’ve exclusively used center focus only. Locking focus and composing after is what brings so much more creatively into ones shot, it’s incredibly fast, and only I want to know what I a focus on, not relying on the camera to guess for me. I’ve always used center focus and always will. Not to mention all my colleagues, most newspaper shooters, wire agency photographers all use center focus, as well. I’m a photojournalist, so any sort of auto focusing system is irrelevant to me, and most of those in my profession. So the point about lens choice renders this obsolete, and thus lens choice is not at all hindered.
You mentioned “I personally find that the D600 has superior IQ and noise performance than the A99.” I’m sure you’re aware then, of the sensor housed in the D600. Whatever comparisons you’ve viewed of IQ performance between both cameras have most likely been JPG only. Because you wouldn’t have typed the words “superior” if you were to open RAW files from both cameras. They’re the same. Same sensors, same RAW file. Since I do not shoot JPG, the processing of JPG files from camera to camera doesn’t affect me. It’s something I do not care about. I care too much about my clients and images to have an image compressed into a JPG format, and rely on the camera doing it’s internal processing. In fact, some of my clients will only accept RAW files, no JPG’s.
Having the option at shooting at 1/8000 is a big deal for a lot of people. It’s not a deal breaker for me, but it sure is nice to have on a bright sunny day. Again, this is an extra addition to the multiple benefiting factors the A99 has vs others in its price range. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. The A99 is hands down, price vs specs, the best DSLR for under $3,000, and on par with some even more expensive.
Image quality isn’t a factor if you shoot RAW. Build quality is a factor for professional photographers however, that expect their bodies to go through some of the most extreme conditions without any issues. Such as some of my colleagues that are conflict photographers, and or expedition shooters that travel the world shooting stock. Personally, I’ve shot a handful of riots where my gear was struck by rocks and battons. A camera that is the primary tool for earning a salary needs to be made as strong as possible. Sony’s aiming for the pro-level photographers that shoot for a living, not a weekend hobbyist. But that’s not to say that a weekend hobbyist shouldn’t buy this camera, though it would be overkill. There’s just too much the A99 offers for the price range, and it’s why I’ve dumped all my Canon gear.
Oh, and did I mention internal image stabilization? Best. Feature. Ever. If you’ve never shot with a camera that utilizes this system, do it. I was sold after purchasing an Olympus EP-2. Olympus has an exceptional sensor shift system, and swapping lenses and still benefiting from stabilization, no matter what lens you use, is such a tremendously huge benefit, it’s worth any extra penny you pay for the camera body.

“The A99 is hands down, price vs specs, the best DSLR for under $3,000, and on par with some even more expensive.”
Also – 1/4000 vs 1/8000 is highly underrated – when shooting large apertures for subject isolation in sunlight the faster the better … and the faster shutter speed lets you open up another stop
Among the other things the D600 lacks … IBIS, a tilt LCD, focus peaking, 1080/60p, the brilliant silent control knob, full weather sealing, its not even a comparison because its a different class of camera.
To those claiming the D600 IQ is superior, again open the raw files in LR4 and really look at them, the Imaging Resource scene has two different points of focus, but when you look at detail its indistinguishable and when pitted against the 5d3 its superior. The 5d3 is better above about 5000, but below the detail in the A99 files is better.

I have looked at the raw files from both cameras…There are differences, and to my eyes the d600 looks better.. Maybe it was a lens thing, who knows..
Maybe I don’t understand enough about what goes into the cameras… But I can’t buy what you’re saying. Just because both of the sensors use the same sensor, doesn’t mean that both cameras will produce the same exact picture. So when dxomark comes out with a sensor rating for the a99, it will be the same rating as the d600 since they share the same exact sensor??
” Image quality isn’t a factor if you shoot RAW. “– This isn’t true…Do some more research on this.
Anyways, to each his own. Both cameras are stellar. Unfortunately I will just have to wait until the a99 drops in price before even considering it. I just found it really really surprising you would completely jump ship and dump your canon gear. That’s courageous.
tsu takamoto,
Yes, I think Kai is childish (particularily in the beginning, mocking the design), and he don’t act with the seriousity I would like to see in a review.
However, to be fair he finishes his video saying:
“If all there is to pick at is the look, you know it must be a pretty good camera!”
.
Yes, to be fair he didn’t knock the A99 features. Though, I don’t think he fully understood what features the A99 has vs the competition. If he was doing a real review, he would have compared spec vs spec. I think he’s more tongue and cheek for his subscribers that don’t fully invest thousands of dollars in cameras. If so, and the photographer bases their buying decision strictly from Digital Rev TV videos, then they shouldn’t be in the photography business. People into photography are better off doing their own research.
Well, he didn’t even scratch the surface. No info about AF-D mode, no info about using viewfinder during video, no info about changes to the flash hotshoe… list can go on, and on….
Yes and if I may say. Kai has never been a real fan of Sony (imo) and he just gives his personal opinion.
To me this is the most positive review I’ve heard from reg. Sony’s recent product line (esp. compared to others like the Nex-7).
So if he’s being positive it must indicate the A99 is extra good!
Well pretty much when tsu mentioned “Image quality isn’t a factor if you shoot RAW” is because he/she is a “Professional photo journalist”. They constantly edit their photos hence why he made that statement and i’m pretty sure he know about how RAW works.
And if he is planning to sell off his whole Canon Gear, then i’ll definitely take his word for it.
And if you think that the D600 is way bang for buck then the a99, then whats stopping you? Why need to wait for the price to go down?
I don’t get why people constantly ignore the fact that the 5d3 costs so much more than the A99, doesn’t have IBIS, a tilt LCD, focus peaking, 1080/60p, the brilliant silent control knob and so on, instead just bashing the A99 for being a SLT, having an EVF and costing more than the D600 despite using the same sensor. The 5d3 has no AF Zeiss lenses, yet so many are buying the ZE’s (and ZF’s in Nikon) anyway. CaNikon shooters would kill for ZAL lenses in other mounts. The A99 is a phenomenal deal when compared to any other FF camera. I just got mine and it shoots stunning stills and some amazing video. IMHO its raised the bar in the DSLR realm.
I think it looks friggen awesome and feels even better. However I do not agree with it being weather sealed no matter what sony says. Check the battery door and SD card door. NO SEALING
Actually, he just uses the 50mm 1.4 around the end, before he has a 50 1.8 (as you can clearly see at 1:44 and not only) and the fisheye.
Now I actually enjoy pretty much Kai’s humor and clips, he may not say everything but he’s funny and some things are also useful. I can even withstand some mockery, after all I don’t think anyone would avoid buying a camera for it is ugly (or a random guy on the internet says so) and he also says many good things about the camera, so I don’t think he was so influenced by looks alone. And although many features are barely or not at all mentioned, in the end I think the A99 comes out quite good.
But going as far as reviewing the newest FF camera with a DT lens well… that’s just plain WRONG unless you openly state that you are testing the cropped format with aps lenses… which I didn’t hear, but then again, I’m not mother tongue and may have missed something
Wow that is not a review, its a “this is not a Canon”, video. Using DT lenses, saying that there is a option to use Xlr mic with a adopter that fits in the mic input….. That’s just crap.
It was a positive review, like his A57 and A77 reviews were positive. Come to think of it the only really bad Sony reviews I can remember in DigitalRev were of the menu/button lag on the early NEXes, which absolutely deserved bad reviews (and got a firmware fix later).
Well I expected more TBH? When he did the A77 was a much better review? This was ill prepared and not a review in any sense of the word? The DT lens was a real blooper?
No it’s not. In the beginning he uses the very plasticky 50 1.8 which is APS-C only, then later he switches to the 50 1.4 (full-frame). This review really is a joke.
screaming idiots at other people will only embarrass yourself when you couldn’t even notice that around 1:40. It’s clear the 50 f1.8 apsc lens with silver ring which he used almost through out the review, except at the end that he switched to FF 50f1.4.
Kai does not do reviews of any use. He wants to be funny rather than informative. If Andrea did not provide the review I would not waste the time to put the address in the browser. His big problem is the looks. Are you kidding? I didn’t think the 99 had a mirror. I think the look which is a minimal concern to me is sleek looking. The burnt orange ring where the lens connects is way cool. The focus on the 99 is fast and accurate. I wish that I had a broader focus spread but this is so much faster than my 850. 6400 is sweet and I have printed out some iso 8000 shots and they were very nice. I do wish the iso performance was better or I should say that I was expecting it to better. I am still not sure if my expectations are just too high. 10000 iso looks good shot. The noise is only a problem or noticeable when zoomed in. Anything 3200 or less looks spectacular to me. I guess my concern is how does it fare against the 5dm3 because the fact I have good prints shooting at iso 8000 should say something. I would never shoot my 850 at 6400 and hated to shoot at 3200. But I think all of us was hoping for spectacular iso performance. So far I am not disappointed but I don’t know if I am wowed. Sony does need to get on the stick and increase the number of lenses that are compatible with the dual focus system. That does not mean the next camera will have more compatible lenses. Sony, it means release updates in a timely fashion. I know you are not accustomed to this behavior but you need to learn. There is no reason that all G and Zeiss lenses were not compatible at release or at least before the end of the year.
Kai likes to keep a lid on displaying his enthusiasm. But if you are aware of his style and reputation then it’s clear that he liked this camera a LOT. SONY can be pretty pleased with this.
Hi,2 days testing A99 vs Nex-7 , Nex-5n and A77 on the same 1600 ISO with tripod.
Conclusion: A99 is less than my expectation at ISO 1600, A99 is just better than A77 and Nex-5n and a very little bit better than Nex-7…
The little Nex and the A-77 are fine tuned during the next months.
Probably, the A99 with some fine tuning and new firmware could do better at 1600 ISO.
In low light , at ISO 3200 the Nex-5n is always the KING!
For your money m the Nex-5n is the best!
a99 is the tool when it comes to low light work, no other sony SLR/SLT Nex camera can come close to it. RX-1 may but over all a99 is SUPERB. I’ve had enough time to test my a99 to come to this conclusion. RAW performance is stellar, jpeg is great too
Andy ,are you a SONY retailer…..???
I make many testing in low light and just a bit better in jpeg than nex-7 .
Also, have you go to imaging resource to see comparometer nex vs A99…

More like are you a canon spy. The a99 destroys the a77 at 1600 iso. In fact the a99 at 1600 is equivalent to the a77 at iso100. You are either incompetent or dishonest.
I like kai, he reviews things the way he wants. I know he can be bias towards certain brands but he is not afraid to say so. The bottom line is if he has nothing bad to say about the camera then you know its good. I always watch more than one review for the same product I never just watch his video because he does miss a few things but overall I find that if he likes a camera it always has a good review from more serious reviewers.
I like those reviews. They are some sort of fresh and clever, but not to be taken serious. It’s like eating popcorn and watching spiderman… sometimes funny, sometimes with nice moments, pretty girls but that’s all.
And about the shape of the camera, i can imagine that. I have that with cars, specialy with tail lights. The back of the car can present a face with tail lights as eyes hahah.
But the thing i noticed most in this review was that Kai was out of focus most of the time. What kinda canon they were filming with?
This was a bad advertisment for canon tbh.
Thank God for Kai!
He is the only reviewer that is good to watch. There is millions of boring reviewers out there.
Few major flaws in the review DT lens but then they do get the 1.4 later.
Yeah I hate those boring, truly informative reviews when you can watch someone impersonate the looks of a camera by doing an imitation of an ape for 5 minutes. I love humor but give me some substance too. But I guess if you cannot dazzle with brilliance baffle them with BS.
This week I will get my A99 with xlr inputs and Rode video mic pro. T be unnest I prefer the dynamic colours and sharpness over the Canon and Nikon as well. I used Nikon for more than 6 years. Photos are more dynamic comparred tot nikon and canon. Like the picture is starting to move any second. The colours are more analogue. All the movies I saw of the Canon 5d and Nikon D800 and D800E, were too clinical.I use a Samsung PS64D8000 plasma screen for comparing. Last year this was the best screen in the world in realistic colours. I will use it for photós and video as well. I think at this moment it is the only camera what can give a very emotional analogue picture in photos and video. For me it was very easy to choose after comparing many many hours all the pictures and videos of the Sony A99, Canon 5d and Nikon D800 and D800E.
Kai is gathering attention for the selling company he’s working for. He’s not ashamed to make jokes like Fishey-on-a-Fish-Market and the more you hate him the less you forget him and that company that wants you to have as their customer. He succeeded once again here faking a review.
I thought I’d never see such a positive review for a Sony cam on digital rev. The only thing he really didn’t like was the looks and, seriously, who cares what it looks like?
I’m one person that actually enjoys Digital Rev (yes, Kai included). But he, sometimes, gets TOO carried away on the jokes and forget to actually review the thing he’s supposed to review.
Unfortunatelly, this was also the case here.
He spent 4 minutes mocking the camera’s looks! The A77 was better reviewed, IMHO.
Strange review. His review on the a57 and a77 were a little more informative than this. The a99 being the Sony flagship model, you’d think he’d go a little bit more into the details and capability of the camera. I don’t think he knew enough about the camera before giving it a spin.
Also, he spent most of the review shooting with the 50mm f1.8 SAM DT lens. Why? Personally I love that lens on my a57′s, but please shoot with full frame lenses when reviewing the a99. The 50mm is compatible thanks to the APS-C detection and automatic frame reduction on the a99, but still…
Also, testing AF with a fish-eye designed in the 80′s? Odd…
Usually, I enjoy their reviews. I find them very funny and informative. This time though… it just wasn’t.
Pretty much the worst prepared review I’ve ever seen, not only of this camera, but from digital reviews.
It’s really bad enough that they should seriously consider taking it down and doing it over again–in not only just so they don’t look like a hot steaming pile of befuddled dimwittery.
I finally got around to watching this. Yes Kai is his usually retarded self. He is very much pro Canon, just about every Sony review I have seen him do has a Canon.
But there are a couple of points that come out near the end.
1. about only being able to complain about it’s looks, mind you he does complain a lot.
2. That Sony advances in the SLT ahead of the other 2 as being an advantage.

7 months ago |I dont think the 6d can be comparable to the A99 in any way… The d600 alone already makes it look like a pile of crap to be honest.

7 months ago |Whether max shutter speeds are limiting or not depends how one shoots, of course.
I’m constantly topping 1/8000 as I shoot a lot with f1.4 lenses during the day. There are times where even ISO 50 and 1/8000 aren’t enough. But for people who rarely shoot faster than f8, it’s probably not an issue.
Tsu Takamoto
7 months ago |J,
Concerning dual auto focus system.

J
7 months ago |I have looked at the raw files from both cameras…There are differences, and to my eyes the d600 looks better..

7 months ago |tsu takamoto,
Yes, I think Kai is childish (particularily in the beginning, mocking the design), and he don’t act with the seriousity I would like to see in a review.
However, to be fair he finishes his video saying:
“If all there is to pick at is the look, you know it must be a pretty good camera!”
.
Tsu Takamoto
7 months ago |Yes, to be fair he didn’t knock the A99 features.

To me this is the most positive review I’ve heard from reg. Sony’s recent product line (esp. compared to others like the Nex-7).
So if he’s being positive it must indicate the A99 is extra good!
Andy
7 months ago |Well pretty much when tsu mentioned “Image quality isn’t a factor if you shoot RAW” is because he/she is a “Professional photo journalist”.

7 months ago |Its a FULL FRAME 50mm f1.4 LENS! HE CLEARLY SAYS IT!!!
Dirk
7 months ago |Yes it’s a full frame capable lens. But to be honest, the 50/1.4 isn’t a good lens at large apertures.
Simone
7 months ago |Actually, he just uses the 50mm 1.4 around the end, before he has a 50 1.8 (as you can clearly see at 1:44 and not only) and the fisheye.
But going as far as reviewing the newest FF camera with a DT lens well… that’s just plain WRONG
unless you openly state that you are testing the cropped format with aps lenses… which I didn’t hear, but then again, I’m not mother tongue and may have missed something

7 months ago |Kai does not do reviews of any use.

7 months ago |Hi,2 days testing A99 vs Nex-7 , Nex-5n and A77 on the same 1600 ISO with tripod.

The bottom line is if he has nothing bad to say about the camera then you know its good. And about the shape of the camera, i can imagine that. I have that with cars, specialy with tail lights. The back of the car can present a face with tail lights as eyes hahah.

This was a bad advertisment for canon tbh.

7 months ago |This week I will get my A99 with xlr inputs and Rode video mic pro.

He spent 4 minutes mocking the camera’s looks! The A77 was better reviewed, IMHO.

7 months ago |Strange review.
Odd…

But there are a couple of points that come out near the end.
1. about only being able to complain about it’s looks, mind you he does complain a lot.
2. That Sony advances in the SLT ahead of the other 2 as being an advantage.

6 months ago |The looks of the camera are subjective. The main thing I noticed from this video is how large it is compared to my a55.
I did learn some things about the camera from this review, but it leaves a lot to be desired in terms of an in depth review.
