2 years ago |Downloaded from the Asian site (thanks mugen).
Exposure compensation from -5 to +5. My sigma 100-300 F4 tends to hunt anyhow, and is somewhat quicker. My CZ 24-70 is fast. Will have to try my macro – but it’s nearly 1 AM here so that may have to wait. Tests conducted in my gloomy media room (and are VERY scientific).

2 years ago |The Zeiss 135 is fast (even though I’m not sure if it is faster).
Just tested my Macro and it really seems to be significantly faster in focussing!
Exposure Compensation and +-3EV Bracketing workls fine!

2 years ago |Should I put the DSCA850.APP file in a folder? Like the MISC? Or should it be a clean formatted CF?
rob
2 years ago |I cleared off a CF chip, then formatted it. I didn’t place the file into a folder.

2 years ago |Ok thanks, its asking me if I would like to update it. But if I say yes it says battery error 50 or something like that. My battery level is at 50%, maybe thats to low. I will let you now if I get it to work.
rob
2 years ago |Hey 850 – did you format your CF before downloading?
My sigma macro seems to be a LOT speedier. It’s usually a turtle, and frustrating because of the hunting. However, it seems to be much improved! I chimped around with the macro, on dark objects in a gloomy room in the middle of the night, and, was very pleasantly surprised! There’s no sense testing the 70-200 2.8 G SSM, as it’s fast anyhow. Below is a link to a tripod-mounted shot taken with incandescent light of a fossil. It doesn’t prove anything relative to the software upgrade – but I can comment that the focus locked on much faster than two weeks ago when I last photographed this specimen. Let me know if this link works please.

2 years ago |I hv updated mine too, A850. : ) Got the battery error 50 too, as my battery level is less than 40%. Then I use a 100% ones, I can upgrade it smoothly. The progress of updating took about 20 seconds, i think. Thanks Sony!

2 years ago |While I do not have the a850 I can vouche for the a900. I have done some editorial shoots with the a900 and I am in love with the results. I think if you are going to invest in a900 also get capture one and from the results your dome (head) will explode

2 years ago |I just updated mine via my macbook pro. There should be no issues updating though Mac. Just download the a900.app file. Place the file onto the memory card (make sure it is formatted) and then press left with the joystick, turn on and menu simultaneously. Shouldn’t give you any issues.

2 years ago |Just updated my A850 and tested with a Sigma 70-200mm HSM at f/4 and it seems alot faster and I don’t know if it’s my imagination it seems more accurate also. Didn’t really feel an update was badly needed as I shoot in RAW (don’t shoot JPEG with this camera, use it as it was meant to be used and stop complaining about high ISO noise) and get fantastic results when combined with LR3 but I do some HDR photos sometimes and the expanded bracketing will be nice and after testing the faster focusing all I can say is
THANK YOU SONY
Josef Neuburger
2 years ago |just upgraded and testet the af with my minolta 70-210mm f/4 (has been quite slow…) – the difference is amazing!
….really, under lighting conditions where the sensor had troubles getting a safe lock the old minolta lens seems just to “jump” to the right focus point instead of searching for it…also got the impression that (when safe af lock is not immediatelly aquired) the af locks on during search for focus more easily…
i got the impression the delay before the af starts his engines was slightly increased – but this might be an optical illusion
WELL DONE, SONY! …now just quit the SLT stuff and improve performance of signal processors and n*k*n & c*n*n will have to change their business strategies to point-n-shoot cams

2 years ago |Well, multiple reports from A850 and A900 users show that the AF is a bit faster, but much more accurate. Some have back focus on the ZA 24, but now they don’t. I, myself, can say that my ZA 135 doesn’t hunt as much anymore. With MF lens, the focus assist is much more accurate and the focus points are aligned with their red LEDs. And 3EV exposure is a nice plus for alternative user like me.

2 years ago |Took a short walk this morning with my updated 850 and CZ 24-70. A few images are posted here:

The fossil pic was taken last night with my macro, which was painfully slow (hunting etc in low/medium light) before the update, but now is surpisingly quick (it almost seems to jump out of the starting gates, and into focus now).

2 years ago |How is Ogopogo? Not too much snow I see. My son lives in The Grand, I think one of the units in the picture (facing south).
Tried my 24-70Z, didn’t seem much different. Will have to see how it performs on the 700200G.
Also thinking of getting the 50 1.4, but wondering if it will be updated with SAm any time soon.
rob
2 years ago |We had a couple weeks of below average temps, but things have returned to normal. The Grand seems like a nice place to live – handy to everything, and the maid service must be nice! The Swedish Women’s Hockey team lived there for several weeks before the Olympics last year, and they seem to have enjoyed themselves.
Ogopogo continues to be mythical – despite some local’s claim to have found mysterious bones on the shore (I think they were sheep bones). Strange how many lakes have monsters (e.g. google “Cressie”) – but I have a theory about these sitings!
The biggest difference in focus speed seems to be with older lenses. The SSM lenses’ difference seems like going from NASCAR to Formula One – either way, blink and you’ll miss it.

2 years ago |Fantastic update. Just tried my original Minolta 85/1.4. It’s noticeably faster and more accurate in focusing, as are all of my lenses. Nice job Sony.

2 years ago |Seems like Sony is getting the hang of their firmware updates. The ability to update through memory card and through Macs, was one of the only problems with the Nex updates a few months ago.
Keep ‘em coming Sony.
extra|ordinary
2 years ago |Awesome! Firmware update successful! I only have two lenses handy at the moment to try…I’ll have to test more lately. I tested the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 HSM and a Quantaray/Tokina 19-35mm. Being rather short focal lengths with short focus throws, I can’t say I notice any difference in speed, but they both do seem more decisive and ultimately more accurate!
What I’m most excited about is the Release W/O lens option. I can now meter and shoot in Aperture priority with full manual lenses! This make life so much easier!!!
extra|ordinary
2 years ago |Oh yeah, Thank you Sony! Keep it up!
serge
2 years ago |I am just wondering what everybody is getting so excited about. It took Sony so much time to get this update out and really it is quite disappointing! what is the use of going from +3 to +5? Sure, I am happy with the ‘release without lens’ (which should not have been lacking in the first place) option and it is said to ‘improve AF’ but they do not go into details on that. I have never had any complaints about the focus accuracy, on the contrary, when it locks its usually spot on. Some lenses are a little slower then others (like the 85mm CZ) but that is the design of the lens and can not be improved by a FW update. Btw: yesterday, after the update, I used the 24-70 and 100mm macro in a (dim) office situation and, as could be expected, it still had a hard time getting a lock on a not too contrasty subject on the outer af point.
Now, if Sony had managed to get the METERING reliability improved, or the lousy FLASH performance (also metering related) or the JPEG processing engine….
RB
2 years ago |You must talk about a different firmware… While I hadn’t anything to complain with V1.0, now things are even better. Focus goes now fast and straightforward to the focus point. The endless search is rather seldom now. Testes briefly with 2.8/24-70 ZA, 1.4/85 ZA, 1,4/50, and 4.0-5.6/70-400 G, in both, candlelight and daylight conditions.
Also the shutter release w/o lens gives a real added value. Before, it was really annoying to switch always between M- and A-mode in a shooting just when changing lens.
Thanks Sony!!!
Now, could I please have also OpenCL on my VAIO laptop, like all the other children, too, so that I can process my photos as well on your really great photographers VAIO?

2 years ago |RB, I totally argree with you.
I didn’t have any complains with the first version, but v2 just blows me away to the point I started cursing at the speed of the AF – just amazing; I’ve held other brands – they can’t compare to the speed of what I’ve just experienced after installing it.
Personally, I can’t wait to get my 70-400G and go around.
peter138
2 years ago |Wow, i just up dated the firmware and test on two telephoto lens, the sony 70-400mm and the old minolta 400mm f4.5.After updated, I definitely noticed the focusing speed has been improved or may be more accurate too? I have to do more testing tomorrow. Thanks SONY.
Sergei
2 years ago |I don’t own A900 but was very pleased with its performance when I tried it. With this update it got even more tempting. Having AF improved to such an extent really makes the life of a pro much easier:)
Rdoe
2 years ago |Well its a better firmware, but I was a bit disappointed to find out that my sigma 70-200hsm is still not as fast as the 70-300G. I can say that there isn’t any improvement. So sell both for the Sony 70-200G?
David
2 years ago |I got the new update installed and I do notice a difference. I am glad that I own such a fine camera. Especially when I go down to the local camera store and try out other cameras, the A850 outshines with or without the firmware update.
However…and I know this is off topic…after seeing the new Pentax K-5…I’m ready to call it quits as far as waiting for the A700 replacement. The Pentax K-5 is everything that the never-to-be A700 replacement should be. I’m done waiting for Sony…I will keep my A850 for now…but I’m getting the Pentax K-5 without hesitation. Sony…you blew it.

2 years ago |If you already have an A850, why be in a hurry for the A77?
Fotoman_Mike
2 years ago |I think what David is saying is that Sony has taken Way Too long to renew one of it’s first cameras…the first was the a100…but what has taken the place of that old camera? like 3 or 4 camera cycles!!!
I am in the same situation! I have an a700 and it has been good…BUT, a year and a half ago, a little piece inside of the camera broke (it holds the mirror in place). I fixed it ( because here in mexico, they wanted $350 for a little piece of plastic that should cost 50 cents!! the problem is that the piece scratched my high pass filter! I don’t want to know what they want to replace that!!!
I don’t know if I should buy an 850 or an a55…The a55 has alot of features (HDR, TWILIGHT HANDHELD, HIgh ISO, FAST, Video)…and I have never had any of those features, but they sound fun…and the a850 is louder and slower and none of those features and everyone always complains about the iso performance…Why couldn’t sony make something like the K5? I’ve got my lenses, I have my flash…I don’t want to have to change brands…but sony is taking too long to make a camera FOR ME!!!!
RB
2 years ago |I’m sorry to hear this. But the a55 and the a850 are two totally different animals. Like cats and elephants. The a55 addresses primarily the fun part of photography, the a850 is meant for folks who know what they are doing and /don’t want/ all these whistles and bells.
Hi-ISO problems are something spread by Canikon-Trolls. Okay, the JPEG engine of the a850 is crap. But shoot raw, use ACR 6 or even better Capture One, and these problems are gone. I don’t hesitate even a milisecond to go to ISO 3200 when lights are low. Some folks (those who print the photos afterwards) don’t even hesitate to go up to ISO 6400…
The successor of the a700 is forseen for the next half year, if I remember right… Check out this site…
