Sony changes the RX1 specifications (AF-C gone, 1:4000 shutter coming)

Sony Japan just announced some changes on the newly announced RX1 FF camera. As you see from the image on top the AF-C Auto Focus option has been removed. The second change is that the Shutter Speed Priority now goes as fast as 1:4000 (before it was 1:2000).
One more news. I updated the full rpeorder option list fo the new RX1 and other Sony cameras on Alphacameradeals (including more Sonystore, BHphoto and Europe links). The RX1 for example can be preordered at Amazon, Adorama, BHphoto, and in Europe at Sonystore DE-UK-FR-IT-ES-NL-SE-FI-CH, Wex UK, Wex Germany.

Continuous AF is quite important for street photography, single AF alone would be inconvenient.
Perhaps is about f2.0 aperture? Larger the f value is harder to AF. Or to make some difference from a99?
Frank
8 months ago |Perhaps like AF-A on a dSLR, it will choose whether to use Single or Continuous AF.

8 months ago |With Focus Assist/Peak manual focus in street photo is fun. Not easy, but real fun. I personally love the idea of no AF at all. Much more important, if one likes bokeh, is the faster shutterspeed.
Zachery
8 months ago |Uh they are not removing AF-C, just removing it from THE DIAL ON THE CAMERA. Whether it’s AF-S or AF-C will be a software selection.

Patrick
8 months ago |Although I don’t line the A/C change for just AF, I do like the ability of having faster shutter speeds even if the aperture must be closed. For a leaf shutter, this makes sense.

8 months ago |It could be that the AF-S/AF-C have been combined like it is in almost all other point in shoots. It would not be hard to make a point and shoot of this caliber have the abilities of AF-C while retaining the precise AF of AF-S.

8 months ago |I think they did this to simplify going from stills to video with AF-S selected. Now AF-S or AF-C can probably be selected in a menu for stills but is always AF-C for video. I do not like the fact that they are making changes this close to release. Makes me wonder how long it will actually be before they ship.

8 months ago |My guess is there will be the option to assign AF-C to the DMF setting. This is similar to what Sony (and Minolta previously) have done for years on the higher end DSLR cameras. Except on an SLR, you have AF-S, AF-C, and MF on the actual switch, with the menu option to set AF-C to DMF.

8 months ago |1/1000 at f/2, 1/2000 at f/4, and 1/4000 from f/5.6 and below it seems. Don’t forget flash sync at ALL speeds. Leaf shutter (X100 behaves the same), so it should be whisper quiet.
Continuous AF is not gone. They simply wanted to streamline the stills to video transition. So now, it is just called AF instead of AF-C and AF-S (no AF-S during video of course).
The AF-C and AF-S for stills can most likely be changed in the menus.

Zachery
8 months ago |Close.
1/2000 @ f/2
1/3200 @ f/4
1/4000 @ f/5.6 and below.
Sina
8 months ago |I stand corrected. I was thinking X100 when I typed those.
1/2000 @ f/2, 1/3200 @ f/4, and 1/4000 @ f/5.6 and narrower.

8 months ago |I can confirm this camera is whisper quiet… The only time it made any noise was when it was focusing!

8 months ago |wewwww it’s good n bad news >.< without AF-c that's will be hard to focus in tracking object..
i hope sony RX1 update their leaf shutter can use it for eksternal flash and off shoe flash so we can use that for strobist

8 months ago |What a shame. Sony announced products that are not ready at all! As I know many comments say that the A99′s firmware is not finalized. Why should comsumer buy beta products? Sony announced unfinished A99 way later than Canon and Nikon. What happened?
Raph
8 months ago |Maybe A99 will change from 6 fps to 12 fps before delivery

8 months ago |The changes are bad? Do they charge more after the changes? No.
Geez..never saw someone complain too much about this..at least they addressed the shutter speed complain (with some limitation) and are trying to deliver the best before it hits the market.

Maybe that’s the only AF that is left?

Andy
8 months ago |That would make sense. DMF mode could be used instead of AFS as it’s basically the same thing except you can refocus manually afterwards.
Rooru S.
8 months ago |1/4000 in shutter speed priority only? So it will select a narrow aperture by default?
RVN
8 months ago |andrea, can this shutter speed up to 1/4000 in manual mode? or still 1/2000 in manual mode?
Spiff
8 months ago |Copal (Leaf) shutters must close all the way from open to closed in the time given. 1/2000 is slow for f2 anyway – I hope the RX-1 has sturdy filter threads.
El Carnicero
8 months ago |Having played around with an RX1, I can tell you the AF is very very very fast. And OMG the image quality is stunning!
So I’m not concerned about removing AF-C from the dial. I think it won’t bother me much at all.

8 months ago |This is wonderful news, in that Sony is listening to its market and changing things very rapidly, now release a firmware update for my NEX-7; Sony!!
Missing feature
8 months ago |Looks like Sony does listen to the prayers! Anything on the camera body is too late to change, but how about:
Wide Conversion Lens (from 35 to 24), like Fujifilm WCL-X100.
