9 months ago |This product will not be so easily duplicated (copied). The technology is in the viewfinder. Perhaps we’ll see a Chinese knockoff of much lesser pixel quality, but it won’t have nearly the same resolution as the actual branded Sony product.
As well, we should not encourage patent infringement from a manufacturer that shows little regard for the intellectual property of others. The cost of R&D is a genuine investment by Sony, and it is designed to answer all those who wish their NEX-5 had a viewfinder. I am pleased that Sony had such consideration to provide such an item, albeit a costly one.
What we may find that the Chinese do provide is a cable system and bracket to allow this EVF to be mounted to a helmut or eyeglasses. But don’t count on them to copy the high resolution monitor so easily. They may make one that “looks” similar, but I highly doubt it will perform anywhere near the same.

9 months ago |Notice the only thing stopping the EVF from attaching to the NEX-5 are those two plastic teeth. I wonder if they were removed would the EVF work with the NEX-5?

9 months ago |No sir, you’re wrong. The only thing stopping the EVF from WORKING on the NEX-5 are the pinouts on the Smart Accessory Port. In dpreview Sony NEX talk forum, somebody identified what each pin is for. None of them were capable of transmitting video information, let’s say, from the sensor to an accessory instead of the LCD.

Well, they just have with this (and people still moan)!
Seriously though, everything appears at manufacturors RRP on release, but quickly comes down. I can’t see this viewfinder being any different.

Anyone knows why there is no virtual horizon in the 5n? Lack of this future is at least strange.I know that they are grid lines, but it would be much easier to have v.h. as an extra tool.

9 months ago |At this price it should swivel left and right as well as upward. This unit is useless to togs who want waist level viewing in the vertical position. Are Sony forgetting that 99% of portraits are vertical?
A smart Chinese company could easily make a spacer adapter that allows swivel left and right. It wouldn’t have to be more than half an inch tall, and left/right swivel would add an entirely new dimension of functionality to the product.
Think Sony think! This product could have been the bomb offering full swivel in every direction… something the NEX-7 cannot do with a built in EVF.

unless you like to be in a awkward position shooting “portraits”. And I can shoot Portraits with horizontal orientation….
Waist level shooting is used more with LCD.

9 months ago |dont complain unless you are getting one. Most of you wouldnt have bought this. I orered mine and its worth it. Why pay less and get less? Im also buying the a mount too. That way this camera can be my backup.

9 months ago |Well in dpreview there are several people with the EVF already, and they’re not complaining because the price is about right in the quality department…Compared to 150USD-300USD EVF from other manufacturers for other mirrorless cameras, this one, many people has said that framing via-EVF is astonishing and very impressive…almost like a OVF

Nex 5n + DOUBLE kitlens + evf is the same as a body only price nex 7 here in uk.
Check the prices for zacuto evfs if you want to go into really expensive territory.
If the Nex evf is as good as its reviews its priced about right….and worth having.

7 months ago |I cannot believe viewfinder will only work with nex-5n. I have an nex-5 and only bought this in July this year. They say its due to connections but surely the same basic connector is on both cameras and a firmware update should have been able to do the rest.
Feel like selling the camera on ebay and switching brands.
Oh – and was just about to buy the new zoom lens that has just come out too.
Feel very let down by Sony.
