Sony introduces the new “WhiteMagic” 3 inch LCD.

Sony Japan has just introduce a new LCD Module. It is 100% brighter or you can switch to the normal mode where it consumes 50% less power than existing units. The new LCD uses an additional white “dot” to provide a brighter image. The LCD has 1.24 million dots and a VGA resolution (640×480 pixels).
Important: This is not the same LCD that will be used by the upcoming new A77. The A77 will have a 921 million dot Trueblack LCD.

Voohoo
10 months ago |I believe they are using OLED in the viewfinder!
But as far as the external screen is concerned, OLED is not a good idea. OLED generally has very poor visibility in sunlight.

10 months ago |Your last sentence is not true. I own a Samsung NV24 HD with OLED Display and it is better than the Nex-5 Display. In Sunlight, both are poor but OLED is still better as long as you don’t switch the NEX to the special Sunlight Mode with wrong colors.

Idiot. The point of OLED is to be viewed in brighter situations

10 months ago |So where will it be used? Whatever, the 921k dot TruBlack LCD like on my NEX-5 is just fine, although it’s nearly unusable in bright sunlight, ‘cos the “sunlight” setting shows completely wrong colors …

10 months ago |I believe bright sunlight situations are one of the main motivations for this technology. Due to the extra brightness it should be easier to view it in bright light. The extra “dots” are not there to increase the resolution, just to increase the brightness

Like to put money on that – 921 million? I really think not – slipped a few orders of magnitude I do believe.
