Sony is working on new sensor designs (patent disclosure)
One of the latest Sony patents disclosed a new kind of sensor. Pixel size does change based on their color characteristic. This does make sense because every color has a different sensivity. Read the google english translation:

3 years ago |This might be a good layout for daylight use, but not so much for use indoors with incandescent and CFL (regular 2700K models) lighting, which is typically strong in red and green energy and deficient in blue.
Usually, the noise is made worse when correcting the white balance because the weak blue channel needs to be boosted much more than the other two. This would only make it worse.
