Sony NEX-5n video news roundup (EosHD calls the VG20 piece of crap)
Sony NEX 5N *vs* FS100 and NEX VG20 – hands on comparison
EosHD (Click here) made a Sony NEX 5N *vs* FS100 and NEX VG20 hands on comparison and said the “VG20 is an absolute piece of crap“. And: “Sony did an exceptionally poor job of the ergonomics on both cameras (VG20 and FS100). I just prefer the simplicity and size of the NEX 5N, and it means your rigging can be far more creative, lighter and more flexible.”
Also Will Vazquez made a Sony NEX-5N vs FS100 vs Canon T2i video quality comparison: “The NEX 5N has some aliasing, but it appears better than the T2i. I think the NEX-5N trounces the T2i in video.”. The video is here below:
Imaging Resource posted a video you can watch below about the Sony NEX-5N with LA-EA2 Lens Adapter (found via SonyAlphaNex).

lol.. now there’s a perfect example of the pot calling the kettle black if there ever was one.

9 months ago |They should have compared it with the 5D and 7D. Would have been a better comparison IMHO.

9 months ago |I would say…while the 5N is better in ergonomics…I think the real solution from the recent Sony offerings is the NEX-7 with the audio socket. That way, many people can get their more specialized mics with the video (but I do prefer record the audio and video separated.)
I do agree the VG20 was badly designed. The mic is perfect, and finally they provided manual audio controls, but I’m sure they can improve that camera for less money.
The FS100 is praised by filmmakers and the ability to mount everything in this world. But it’s the first time I see someone complaining about the quantity/layout of controls. That’s strange…And if they’re complaining about ergonomics (Carry it for example) That camera was meant to be put on a tripod/trolley/rig.
The NEX-5N review and user experience opinions are still tempting me to buy it. But I hope Sony comes with another firmware that provides a way for my little NEX-5 to get 24p while they provide LA-EA2 support and manual controls while recording.

9 months ago |…your NEX-5 should be lucky at least with the LA-EA2 support according to this news:
http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/24/sony-announces-three-new-nex-e-mount-lenses-la-ea2-a-mount-adap/
I’m hoping for the same improvements with Firmware 05 and also especially to get the Lens Compensation feature introduced with NEX-5N, that made Steve Huff “now a fan of the 18-55″:

9 months ago |Recording audio & video separately is a nightmare unless the two have got proper sync facilities. The problem isn’t just getting the two in sync to begin with (a sharp in-shot clap or the like can do that), it’s that the clock rates are generally subtly different so one slips with respect to the other, then you are into games of stretching or shrinking the audio so it’s in sync at the end.
I’ve done it once with consumer kit – not an exercise I’d like to repeat.

9 months ago |dude, some day some “chinaman” will sell a hotshoe adapter with 3.5mm input for the 5n on ebay
Pablo
9 months ago |ENOUGH.
THAT IS IT.
I am going to sell one of my NEX3s and get the 5N body only from HongKong.
There are just too great improvements to waste due to waiting.
Life is short.
ISO100, better colors, lower noise at higher ISO, higher per pixel sharpness, no corner color-shift with the Heliar 15mm, a dedicated AEL button, electronic viewfinder and fullHD video, here I come!

9 months ago |Don’t know why…but even if it’s not well proportioned…That SAL1650F28 combo + LA-EA2 + NEX-5N looks tempting for me…Like those crazy experiments of modding a computer to get it as fast as it could…it looks amazing to me =P

9 months ago |I was quite impressed too – yeah it makes the camera more bulky but it’s still smaller than an slr or slt – Sony seem to have made a very worthwhile adapter. Although it is quite expensive, it means NEX just got a-mount and that means loads of lenses.
For me, I’m still gonna wait and see what they do with the e-mount ultra-wide zoom and G standard lens next year – hoping for a 10-XX and a 16-80 – before I get an NEX6. Yeah, 6, you know it’ll be out at the same time as the new lenses…

9 months ago |It’s not just A mount. It’s a mount with AF!! that’s the most attractive feature.

9 months ago |What worries me the most is the Battery life after attaching the LA-EA2 adapter on the NEX-5N.
I too am most interested in this combo. Actually, the best would be NEX6 with the ergonomics of NEX7 & the Sensor of NEX5N.
This allows for a component based upgrades. You can eventually upgrade the AF module by upgrading the adaptor, you can upgrade the sensor by upgrading the NEX camera… The lenses were always upgradable in SLRs anyway… The only thing missing is the SSS.

9 months ago |NEX6 – thats what I wish too. That is, EVF, popup flash, hotshoe and physical controls of NEX7 with the sensor of the NEX5 for a price less than $1000. Is that too much to ask? I mean, the Pany G3 has an EVF, popup flash and hotshoe plus swiveling touchscreen for 700~800.

9 months ago |I hope someone make more in-depth review and sample pic + vid about the LA-EA2 adapter… can’t find it anywhere… at first i’m in love with a65, but then i heard about croping issue in video mode in a77 probably in a65 too. what a waste .now nex5N a lot people give positive review, just think can fit it a Nex5N with my Sal-16105 hehe…
John Caballero
9 months ago |What cropping issue? If you want a 16:9 image out of a 3:2 SENSOR YOU HAVE TO UNDERSTAND THAT YOU HAVE TO CROP FROM THE TOP AND BOTTOM TO GET IT!!!! Because a 16:9 is a more rectangular image than the sensor!!!! That was another EOSHD crap!!!
EiTaro
9 months ago |Caballero a77, ΝΕΧ 7 and NEX 5n among others all share sensors of the same size (APS-C that is). But whereas NEX 7 and NEX 5n use all of the available horizontal size of the sensor for video the a77 doesn’t do that but uses only a portion of it! So…
Loempoer
9 months ago |nah calm down bro, I know exactly there always a crop if you shoot on 16:9 from normal 4:3..
its common thing no matter in nex, nor other dslr… from square 4:3 sensor to widescreen format off course you lose top and bottom.. my curious is, someone said on some site there will be a crop other than the 16:9/wide format crop. some site said its because of the sensor need to move for SSS. so there need a slight to crop the sensor.. and other said if we turn off the SSS, the crop (other than 16:9) will be gone (hopefully).. but until now no one that has hand on A77 to clarify this.. no one make review how much the “other crop” is and how bother it is.. i hope it’s not significant or gone after SSS turn off…
tell me if you found one..or maybe we must wait until the production A77/a65 arrive..

9 months ago |It’ll crop from the left/right sides too – as do, among other phones, the iPhone4 by default. (Unless you install my Cydia hack, of course.)

9 months ago |For those hammering EosHD, perhaps you need to read a little more of what the guy says. He’s definitely not anti-Sony, he absolutely loves the 5N. When he criticizes the VG20 et al he’s doing it simply from the standpoint of someone who wants something to do the job properly and from reading the article he cant justify the huge extra expense of the VG20 over the 5N which seems a valid point. Thats a whole load of extra cash to throw away on just the form factor. His comparisons with the GH2 are valid also, even a quick look at the videos on vimeo will tell you that. How they get the extra perceived resolution out of that camera I dont know, but its streets ahead of any comparable camera out there. Personally I may not agree with everything he says on every subject, but I can understand his reasons and generally they’re to the benefit of us all in that they may just bring us better cameras.

9 months ago |does anyone know if the autofocus of the LA-EA2 works in videomode with ANY A-mount lens (as in old minolta AF lenses) like with the Sony SLTs?
Beachrider
9 months ago |Ummm. The EOSHD website doesn’t mention that the VG-20 that they performance-trashed is a preproduction package and firmware. It is rash to be so harsh with a preproduction setup.
Paul
9 months ago |Any new information during a time of scarcity has some value, but…
The comment that I posted (verbatim here) at his site, and onto his Vimeo upload, which of course he (Andrew Reid) deleted, is that any “test” from an amateur filmmaker at a tradeshow without verifying symmetrical manual settings between devices is minimally useful. And let’s not forget, besides all the GH2 crowing, that all DSLR sensors are horrible at downsampling and if there were GH2 footage side-by-side with these, aliasing would show too. Naturally the NEX-FS100 is the dramatically superior performer. That should be obvious to anyone who watches the quick-and-sloppy “test” video.
If this sounds cranky and mean, I am proposing that the field of “testing” is serious stuff, and if you can’t afford or don’t have access to the real gear, you do no one a favor by just showing up at a trade show, popping in an SD card and making your rounds with rushed results.
