Sony NEX-5N video quality reviews.
EosHD (Click here) posted the video on top and a short NEX-5n review: “There is absolutely no doubt that Sony have produced a dark horse here, at this price and position in the range. It offers the biggest amount of bang per square inch and per dollar that I have ever seen. Due to it’s size and compatibility out of the box with PL mount lenses, it could also replace a director’s viewfinder with a digital equivalent.”

Reminder: The NEX-5n is in Stock! Check here:

9 months ago |I’m choosing between nex 5n and pen 3. with the 5n, if I had a budget of $1500 to spend on lenses, what should I get? Interested in portraits, video, outdoors and macro (in that order). Thnx.
C
9 months ago |Use some of that $1500 on a follow focus and rail kit for video. Check out eoshd, down a few posts they have an affordable one. As for lenses for video, if you aren’t going to use a tripod then be prepared to smooth your footage out in post or use lenses with optical image stabilization – its why I keep the 18-200 e-mount.
As for portrait lenses, I’ve had good results with the Jupiter-9 and Rokinon 85mm, however both of those lenses are for SLRs.

9 months ago |GH2 destroys NEX in video quality and manage to look much more “cinema” like, IMHO
TophBoogie
9 months ago |That GH2 has hacked firmware settings. Not saying it doesn’t seem “warmer” just throwing it out there.
C
9 months ago |Hacked GH2 owns bones. It doesn’t seem to have as wide of a dynamic range, which may or may not be a good thing depending on what is getting filmed.
If you’re big into postwork, the higher datarate on a hacked GH2 is a winner.

9 months ago |because it seems im in the minority here, I have re watched the video and concluded that there is no competition, gh2 is anohter league (and the hack is free)

9 months ago |Not from those samples! Plus, if you want the overly-dark appearance of the GH2, just stop down a bit (or adjust in post).

9 months ago |I dont think its quite that simple, the GH2 shots have way better perceived sharpness and detail. As EosHD stated when it comes to dynamic range, the NEX-5N runs away with it, so pros and cons to both I guess.
Sergio
9 months ago |Actually it looks like the EOSHD reviewer felt the NEX was more “cinema” like. in the article he mentions that the NEX video image is softer which would give it the more cinema look.
“At the moment the GH2 has the better video quality all-round (although it could be said the NEX is more cinematic looking – video on the GH2 is very sharp and contrasty) but the NEX has a larger sensor and 60p. It really is a case of no clear winner, you’re right – the winner will depend on what you value most in terms of features. I’m keeping both.”

9 months ago |The old NEX maybe, but this new one set to blow the Pana out of the water.

9 months ago |NEX-5N is a winner! Good dynamic range even in high ISO. You can tweak the video in software after shooting. And make it look like whatever you want. You get details also in the shadows, and show them or hide them. It’s all up to you.
Happy to see both ISO 3200 and ISO 6400 with the NEX-5N here.
Some people has written ISO 3200 is the highest, but that is only if using auto ISO. With manual ISO maybe also ISO 25.600 is possible to use.
At the end, excellent video from both NEX-5N and GH2. Some progression since the “good old VHS recorder days”.

9 months ago |not a big video person but the NEX seems to be showing a LOT more than the GH2 in any given scene… granted the look of the GH2 might be preferred for somethings
Edgars
9 months ago |NEX5n video was overexposed for one stop. That is main difference.
Nico Foto
9 months ago |It looks like that, agree…All Nex-5n videos looked distinctly more luminous, sometimes even with way blown out highlights.

9 months ago |I can’t for the life of me see the GH2 advantage other than the exposure. I think when someone who knows what they’re doing does a comparison the NEX-5N is going to BLOW THE GH2 OUT OF THE WATER – just BLOW IT THE F*CK AWAYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
hHhahhhaha!!!!!!!!!

9 months ago |if you’d read the review carefullly…. the GH2′s recording on 44Mbits. the 5N’s on 24Mbits. most probably the reason why the GH2 retains more detail.
and the GH2 is hacked.
monkeyfacemcbride
9 months ago |I think the GH2 retains more detail even without the hack, there are illustrations on Vimeo etc pitting it against the major canon VDSLRs and it wins handsomely. Obviously some clever processing going on somewhere.

9 months ago |Did I read that correctly from EOSHD? “It even has AF micro adjust”?
Wow. How come they never advertise things like this??
RTI
9 months ago |I believe AF micro adjust feature is related to the translucent adapter, which ofc uses phase detection AF, contrast detection AF doesn’t need any “micro adjustments”…
redfern
9 months ago |That makes sense, but still it means they’ve added the ability for the sensor to shift, right? The adjustment wouldn’t be in the translucent adapter, but in the body itself, if I’m not mistaken. Which is still a very nice addition!
GH
9 months ago |AF adjustment doesn’t move the sensor. It just adjusts the pdaf calibration.
RTI
9 months ago |I doubt the sensor shifts… All the “micro adjustments” are software based, thus they are useful only in case there are slight miss-alignments, in our case in the adapter. What I want to say – when you micro adjust some values, from in-camera menu” regarding back/front focusing issues, you don’t physically move the AF sensors.
If the AF has serious focusing issues, the servicemen usually correct it by adjusting the plane with the 3 screws, which I presume are at the bottom of the adapter.

9 months ago |Too bad it’s pretty hard to see in these videos
- the (possible) aliasing of the 5N (one of the strongest points of the GH2 because of the pixel binning)
- the real resolution, which is also one of the best points of the GH2, unlike most other digital cameras, both DSLR and P&S.

9 months ago |EOSHD has a widespread reputation for arbitrary reviews, poor writing, and technically intermediate knowledge. The simple problem is that the NEX-5N lacks a purpose-built sensor for video (dumping unnecessary megapixels), and aliasing is the Achille’s heel of the NEX-5N just as it was for the NEX-5. Nothing has changed.
I’m shocked at all the glowing praise for the new NEX-5N even within the video context, because it’s still awful. Though at SAR, the possibility to earn commission revenue from Web links that lead to sales is the ruling reason to post anything…
