Sony NEX-7 and NEX-5n reviews roundup (tested with ZM lenses).
The documentary on top has been shot with the Sony NEX-5n and SLRmagic Sony lenses (Click here to see them on eBay).
ThePhoBlographer (Click here) tested the NEX-5n: “So is the NEX 5N worth its weight in gold? In my honest opinion, yes it sure is. The image quality combined with overall size, excellent high ISOs, extreme good video, and simple to use menu along with a touch screen makes this a winner in my book.”
You can see a NEX-7 with Zeiss ZM lens test at Steve Huff (Click here): “there is the magenta color shift. I can’t deny that it’s there. It is. Sometimes. Very rarely in my use. And only with the Biogon. With large aperture. But even then not always, or not noticeable.“. Here is the list of all ZM lenses:
Distagon T* 2,8/15 ZM (Click here to see price on eBay).
Distagon T* 4/18 ZM (Click here to see price on eBay).

Sonnar T* 2/85 ZM (Click here to see price on eBay).
Tele-Tessar T* 4/85 ZM (Click here to see price on eBay).
Sony NEX-7 review at TheVerge (Click here): “I’d buy the NEX-7 over any Micro Four Thirds or mirrorless camera currently on the market. The APS-C sensor is a big advantage for the NEX-7, as is its speed and manual control. For most users, especially those who have never used a DSLR and are looking to step up in quality and control, the NEX-7 should absolutely be on the short list for your next camera. It’s certainly on mine“.

So at a weight of 465gm and a current gold price of about 41.8 euros per gramme, that values an NEX-5n at about 19,400 euros. You could buy a proper camera for that price.
Idiotic things reviewers write…

Yes. Most do.
Who in their right mind would buy any Zeiss Biogon lenses to use on the NEX-7. ???
Zeiss and Sony users would be better off if they (Sony/Zeiss) make more E-mount lenses instead.
Leave the M mount lenses to the M users.

Er, I actually bought a Sony NEX-5N so I could use my Leica M lenses on an affordable body!
The obsolete Leica M8 and M9 bodies are both rip-off overpriced, lack any kind of video and are difficult to use when focusing large aperture lenses wide open.
The 5N OTOH has focus-magnification, a god-send when shooting f1.4.

2 years ago |+ 1. I couldn’t agree more !!! We need more Zeiss or G primes.
People complain about lens size, so what does Sony do ??? They give us more large zoom lenses. Meh.

2 years ago |Hey, I bought my ZM 35/2 specifically for Nex, which is near optical perfection, and I wouldn’t trade it for the relatively average (for Zeiss) 24/1.8. Many of us are forgoing the Nex-7, because of its corner performance with rangefinder lenses.

2 years ago |I was specific about the NEX-7. The first real camera in the NEX series, complete with an integrated EVF and a hot shoe.
Denis
2 years ago |Agree. I don’t understand what the hype about the sonnar 24/1.8, it’s not on par with ZM zeisses being about that pricey.

2 years ago |Are you nuts? Steve its a VERY VERY common axiom in the English language at least to say, Its worth its weight in Gold. Meaning Not that it has a physically value of gold but that it performs beyond its value or cost.
Steve Jones
2 years ago |I rather think the word you were groping for is idiom, although I rather suspect it’s not confined to idiomatic English but appears in many languages. An axiom is a self-evident truth, a very different thing.
And no, I wasn’t being serious. Just wanted to work out just how much I could get for trading in an NEX-5n should somebody actully offer me its weight in gold. Lesson is, for investment purposes, buy the shiny yellow metal and not a consumer camera. Just saying…

Lets have more like this, and EOSHDs lighting tests, and less lame test shots of children, pets and brick walls.

2 years ago |Oh hey, the first negative review for the NEX-7′s EVF. I’m glad somebody agrees with me that the eyepiece sucks arse.
Denis
2 years ago |Agree. They must find a way to shade sunlight which is much brighter than EVF so you can’t see anything in such conditions.
