Sony NEX-7 news and reviews roundup.
ThePictureDesk (Click here) posted image samples taken with the Zeiss 24mm lens: “The Sony NEX7 with the Sony Zeiss Sonnar E 1,8/24ZA seems to be a nice combo for a walk around camera. The lens is slightly larger than I would have expected but feels good in your hand.”
The Russian website Photoru (Click here) posted new NEX-7 studio photography image samples. And other image samples are available on Flickr (Click here). And Dpreview (Click here) update the Zeiss 24mm image samples collection.

8 months ago |I cancelled my preorder after seeing the a77 RAW files.
Just too much noise at 3200 and 6400. Hoping for a NEX-6 with the NEX-7 body and the NEX-5n sensor.
I know, very unlikely!

8 months ago |Someone who just cancelled his order cause there is too much noise on a 1200 dollar camera.
I am spoiled by my d700. I guess I’m getting a nex-5n or wait for rev 2 on the nex-7.

8 months ago |lol indeed
if the reason was something like want to know if it’s stable before i buy it and don’t end up with a clicking device [nex 5n] or a device with firmware bugs [a77] that would have made more sense to me

8 months ago |Funny indeed. Thinking that the NEX-5N has the super sensor he needs for his iso 3200 and iso 6400 ‘wants’. ‘Needs’ may be a different thing.
Sony, please just produce a functional and reliable tool, the specs are looking good as is.

8 months ago |Just looking for something – ANYTHING to hate. The clicks already have a fix in the works – how about the rolling shutter and lack of autofocus in Mark II’s and equivalent? Any fixes coming down the road for those? Or, how about the small toy camera files coming from the d700???

8 months ago |Rob, it seems like you’re looking for something to hate in all competitor cameras. And ‘toy camera files’ from D700.. it’s the same mp as the D3s.. Calling that file size, from cameras used by many professional sports journalists etc ‘toy’ is just silly. The same point remains, unless you’re printing simply massive prints or else cropping your pics to hell, there isn’t much advantage in resolution over 12mp as human eye can’t resolve it (at normal viewing distances relative to print size)
Mike was saying he’s perfectly happy with the noise characteristics of the NEX-5N, doesn’t sound like a hater.
Personally, I’m wanting to love the NEX-7, but waiting to see what images from production versions. After the few glitches of 5N and A77, won’t put a pre-order in yet.. but.. definitely on my watch list.

8 months ago |An interesting comparison given this camera is undoubtedly going to attract interest from street photographers:
Leica M9 vs. A77 (and I expect the performance to be *BETTER* on the NEX-7 without the pellicle mirror. It will almost definitely gain about 200 ISO on the ISO rating.)
DxOMark: http://is.gd/22CJmJ
A couple things to point out:
The Leica and its lenses are size-similar to the NEX-7 with its lenses.
The Leica has no AF at all, so worrying about no phase detect AF on the NEX-7 isn’t relevant.
The Leica is a FULL FRAME camera at a lower imager resolution.
There are more factors in play for the image quality out of a sensor than simply having the same sensor, but if history is a guide, these scores will be about the same but with better ISO performance in the NEX-7. Just compare the NEX-C3 and the A55.

8 months ago |It’s not a fixed gain on ISO (which is linear), it’s about a 50% percentage gain. Hence 1600 ISO on an A77 ought to have similar noise & DR characteristics to 2400 ISO on the NEX-7, 3200 ISO would be like 4800 ISO on the NEX-7 and so on.
The 50 ISO setting on the A77 (which is measured at 63) will be virtually identical to the 100 ISO setting on the NEX-7.
That’s the half stop difference – and stops are on a logarithmic scale.

8 months ago |The dpreview samples of the 24mm Zeiss on Nex-5N aren’t wowing me. I’ve seen many shots from the 5N with the kit lens that look stunning. I’m getting a little worried about the Zeiss not living up to the hype.

8 months ago |Jessy – What exactly don’t you like about them? They are mostly shot stopped down to f7 or greater so you are not going to see any shallow DOF if that is the look you like. Even at f/7 with some diffraction, the images look sharp edge to edge. Very nice.
I saw a few images on Flickr (search for dacookieman) shot at close range and wide open that looked pretty amazing so I think this is a lens that can do it all, depending on the environment and your skills as an operator.

8 months ago |I’m not sure why Techradar is making the comparison as the NEX-7 is in a completely different class of camera.
Both the Nikon and the Olympus while no doubt being great cameras are in the “toy camera” category (as is the Pentax) imo; small, cute and just a little better than a compact camera with the emphasis on the small and cute.
It’s like comparing a decent family car with one of those super minis; yes they all have four wheels and an engine but the super mini with it’s 1000cc engine can’t compete with the 2000cc+ engine of the bigger car on the motorway.

8 months ago |Hi everybody!
That is my first comment on SAR, but I think that it could be an interesting thought about DXO mark and Sony sensors :
If you compare the 3 non-SLT camera using the 14 MP CMOS exmor (tested by DXOmark), you will find that Nex5 = a550 = a560 (the charts do superimpose).
http://www.dxomark.com/index.php/Cameras/Compare-Camera-Sensors/Compare-cameras-side-by-side/%28appareil1%29/686%7C0/%28brand%29/Sony/%28appareil2%29/652%7C0/%28brand2%29/Sony/%28appareil3%29/624%7C0/%28brand3%29/Sony
(measurements in print mode)
If you compare one of these non-SLT 14 MP cameras with the a55 and a77 SLT-cameras, you will find : a560 = a55 = a77 (here again, the charts superimpose)
http://www.dxomark.com/index.php/Cameras/Compare-Camera-Sensors/Compare-cameras-side-by-side/%28appareil1%29/734%7C0/%28brand%29/Sony/%28appareil2%29/675%7C0/%28brand2%29/Sony/%28appareil3%29/686%7C0/%28brand3%29/Sony
If you now compare the a560 and the a33, which are non-SLT / SLT cameras with the 14 MP sensor, you will find that a33 < a560, which is logical because they have the same sensor, but one is fitted with SLT technology.
The same thing happens with the comparison between the a580 and the a55 (a55 Slt-a33 (14 MP non-SLT > 14 MP Slt)
(2) Nex5 = a550 = a560 = Slt-a55 = Slt-a77 (14 MP non-SLT = 16 MP SLT = 24 MP SLT)
(3) Nex5 = a550 = a560 < a580 = Nex-c3 (14 MP non SLT < 16 MP non SLT)
From (2), we can infer that 16 MP = 24 MP (the two sensors perform the same), so we can expect the Nex-7 to be as good as the a580/nex-c3, and better than nex3/nex5.
That means that Sony managed to make their 24 MP sensor as good as the excellent 16 MP one, and that the SLT technology reduce slightly the performances at the level of the already very good 14 MP cmos exmor.
If you have the choice between two sensors (16 MP / 24 MP) that deliver the same performance (SNR / DNR / Tonal range / Color Sensitivity at the same ISO), isn’t it logical for you to choose the one with better definition (24 MP)?

8 months ago |Has anyone actually tried the sony a77 and nex-7? Everyone wants to prove they are smarter….know so much and you don’t even have it yet. You can always pre order and return for full refund so if its something you watching, don’t watch, maybe try and if YOU not anybody else don’t like it then return it.
