Sony NEX-7 review at Photoreview
While I am still waiting to see when the first few and lucky SAR readers will get their NEX-7 camera you may take a look what reviewers are writing about it:
There is a new full Sony NEX-7 review at Photoreview (Click here): “Subjective assessments of image files from the review camera show them to be a lot like those from the SLT-A77. This is to be expected since both cameras have the same sensor and image processor chips. The kit lens, which we covered in our review of the NEX-5, is an adequate performer but not in the same class as the Sony DT 16-5 0mm f/2.8 SSM lens, which we used for the SLT-A77 review. Consequently, it’s not surprising to see our Imatest results slightly below those obtained with the A77.”
You heard Sony? We need a pro zoom lens (and of course the pancakes). I hope Sony will soon give us some news about the upcoming new roadmap!
And here is one more preview: Photographyreview (Click here) posted a NEX-7 first impression article.

Jack Le Boul
7 months ago |What we need is the existing lineup of lenses to be delivered.
I was told that the Zeiss 24f1.8 will be delayed until mid to end of December here in Switzerland.
Anyone have any news from other countries?

I’d use the Zeiss 24 1.8

7 months ago |I am quite certain that most people who buys the NEX 7 for fun (or even serious studio work for that matter) can certainly afford better glasses. My two cents.
Zstan
7 months ago |It’s like buying a d300s or a canon 7D or a77 and fit a 18-55 kit lens on it. There’s nothing wrong in that but what’s the point? Though I agree a future high quality zoom (pancake) lens would be more than welcome
Linh
7 months ago |The problem is that there are only two E-mount “better glasses”, and neither is a standard zoom. And using an adapter defeats the purpose of having a compact camera (though nothing wrong with this).
Zstan
7 months ago |If we are talking about the NEX c3 then yes maybe it can be considered compact. But I really don’t see any compactness in the NEX 7 although its a lot less bulkier than a conventional DSLR.
hiepphotog
7 months ago |They are compact compared to the traditional DSLR. So to expect them as compact to the regular point-and-shoot is just pointless. I used to lug 2 A900s with the 24-70 and 70-200. Compared to that, 2 NEX-7s with 16-50 and 50-135 would weigh like feather. Size would be more manageable as well.

7 months ago |High quality zoom and pancake do not go hand in hand. It will be one or the other, or both, but it won’t be combined into one lens.

7 months ago |Reading this review makes me want to return the NEX-5N I just bought yesterday…. Too bad NEX-7′s stock is being delayed indefinitely….
jmfitamant
7 months ago |Not just for this reason. Nex-7 sensor seems not to have the microlens technology as the Nex-5. Then, if you use Voigtlander, Zeiss ZM lens, you will get better results with the Nex-5 than the Nex-7. What a shame !

1. Sony NEX 7 is available now in Japan (Japan language only)
2. Sony 24mm 1.8 is available from December 23rd
3. Sony 50mm 1.8 is available from January 2nd 2012

7 months ago |For those who are really anxious, I say it isn’t so bad -or impossible- to operate a camera in japanese.
The first A700 I had came from Japan, with japanese only menus.
So I downloaded the English manual, learned where the important settings were inside the menu, and everything else I could easily do using external buttons.
(using a Nex C3 or Nex 5N where more menu-diving is necessary could be more bothersome. But since the Nex7 has a lot of external controls, it’ll make things easier)

7 months ago |Sony really does need to get their act together on lenses. The 24mm and 50mm are a good start, but they really have no other compelling E-Mount lenses IMO. I’ve already pre-ordered a NEX-7, and if it ships next week I will certainly keep it. However, the Panasonic GX1 does now provide a viable alternative for me if my NEX-7 gets delayed till March. Up until now m4/3′s didn’t really have a body that suited me to go with all those great lenses. The GX1 is far from perfect. In-fact, aside from AF speed I prefer pretty much everything about the NEX-7, but the versatility the GX1 offers might outweigh the advantages the NEX-7 has.

7 months ago |I’m really bored of hearing about pancakes now. If Sony can guarantee image quality to the standard of normal size lenses, then fair enough, but the 16mm f2.8 was a dire lens so I hope is not an illustration that pancakes have to be compromised in terms of image quality.
I’d rather Sony concentrated on primes with top-notch image quality and a decent fast zoom, something equivalent to the 16-50mm f2.8 A-Mount. Size is not an issue, within reason.

7 months ago |“the 16mm f2.8 was a dire lens”
Maybe it was when first released, but this forum thread shows many good pictures which seem (so far as one can judge on the web) to be quite sharp.
http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/readflat.asp?forum=1042&thread=39669102
The main problem seems to be camera shake, as it does not have stabilisation.

7 months ago |that’s really good for lens kit
i like the result, are this 16mm good too if we use it on nex7?
Eric
7 months ago |You may be bored of it, but it is still a giant issue. My family/friends always come to me for photography advice, and even though I’ve ordered a NEX for myself, recently 4 of them have chosen to go with m4/3′s simply because of lens size (as well as AF speed).
Sony desperately needs smaller lenses ASAP. I’m really surprised they haven’t made a collapsible zoom yet. Even if pancakes are a technical hurdle a collapsible zoom shouldn’t be…they are they only mirrorless company without one.

7 months ago |There might be a reason for Sony -owner of Minolta, one of the bigger Japanese lens makers- not to invest hugely in lenses for the Nex. I think (but I’m known as a wishful thinker) it’s because the APS-Nex is an intermediate stage, a stepping stone. And I will not point out the final destination
Terryfried
7 months ago |At least there will be new E-series lenses. Serious APSC-Alpha lens’s will in all probability have gone from just the 1680z to 1650SAL. yes Sony now have their own branded Serious APS-C. But don’t expect a 50-180 F2.8 weather sealed SSM to match it. Sony don’t care about A77 owners it is just a sales push to lunch A99 etc. and win awards of coarse.

7 months ago |Sometimes, brands take decisions which go in the wrong way. Sony is not able to provide enough native high end lens for Nex-7. Nex-7 is the most relevant system to use legacy lenses as Voigtlander or Zeiss ZM. Sony uses the microlenses technology for the Nex-5n but not for the Nex-7. Not logical, strategically stupid. You get much better results with Voigtlander or ZM lenses on the Nex-5n than the Nex-7, which is the camera the most indicated, following its features, to use these lenses. Sony must make VC and ZM lenses users very frustrated and, because of the delay due to the Thailand flood, Nex-7 won’t have the success expected. Sony should take advantage of this delay to rethink completely this problem.

7 months ago |that’s right, sony make a blunder with not uses microlenses technology for nex 7, maybe nex 5n is a prototype for nex N generation.. i hope after nex 7 sony make a nex 7N with a lower megapixel to reduce a noise
hope sony realize zeiss 35mm f2 pancake
that would be great for nex system (^0^)/

7 months ago |I have heard they will be a very probably Carl zeiss portrait e-mount lens, may be a 50mm or 60mm and of course really fast !!
I hope a pancake too !!!

7 months ago |I just don’t understand reviews that say things like…
_”Shots taken at ISO 6400 were printable at A4 size, with shots at ISO 12800 printable up to 5 x 7 inches.”_
Really? How subjective can you get? Does the print driver prevent me from sending an 8×12 shot at 12800 iso? Is there a law against it?
What printer is used to make these claims?
I swear, when I get my NEX-7… I’m going to print an 8×12 shot at 12800 just to prove the writer wrong… See there, I did it!
