Sony NEX-7 review by Pocket Lint

I guess you already know what’s to like or not to like on the new Sony NEX-7. So this is not a review that will reveal something new. The British Pocket-Lint website (Click here) like other reviewers fell in love with the NEX-7. While the “electronic viewfinder isn’t going to be to everyone’s tastes” but “Sony’s 2.4m-dot OLED viewfinder blows those out the water“. Nerveless it’s still not perfect and there is still some “ghosting“. And than there is that huge 24 million Megapixel resolution squeezed on the APS-C sensor: “It’s testament to the Sony engineering team that this doesn’t become an issue, however, as the NEX-7’s image quality is superb.”
The only real limit of the camera is the auto focus speed and precision. It’s not on par with the competition. The only two “downsides” are the high price and the limited NEX lens range. That’s why the camera doesn’t receive the full score and gets 4 of 5 stars.
Most stores are not accepting NEX-7 preorders yet. Check for yourself: Amazon.cn, Digitalrev, eBay.

7 months ago |Nikon D800 leaked pictures seem to be out. How happens that we don’t hear anything about Sony upcoming FFs?

7 months ago |Becasue we are still far away from the announcement. The D800 should have been announced back in late October. Than the announcement has been delayed becasue of the flood. And I guess many people alreayd had the pics in their hands and that’s why it’s out now.

7 months ago |I see. But do you find still reasonable that Sony will have a lower mpix count FF sensor when D800 comes out with 36mpix sensor?

7 months ago |Do you know something we don’t? Sony hasn’t announced a new FF model yet, so how do you know it will have less megapixels?

7 months ago |I know same things you know. I am referring to the recent rumor posted on SAR concerning two or three FF cameres in the near future. It was spoken that one of them would be a 24mpix high ISO performer FF. God bless Sony if it’s ever true.

7 months ago |If the NEX-7′s AF speed and precision in low light is the same as that of the NEX-5N, then I think that isn’t good enough for a camera of this price range, never mind one aimed at enthusiasts. In low light situations where I have to have reliable and quick autofocus – like photographing indoor events – my Panasonic GH2 is far ahead. The NEX-5N will work if you have the time, but indoors the AF is not as sure footed as Panasonic’s.
Now I know not everyone needs good autofocus performance in low light, but if you do it’s something to keep in mind. If you don’t then you can enjoy the better dynamic range and high ISO image quality of the Sony. Each camera and system has its strengths.

7 months ago |Focus Peak + Anti Motion Blur (AMB) works for me in those low-light situations with Manual Focus.
Switching to SCN Mode – Night Portrait + Focus Peak also nail it for me if I require flash, also in MF.
I don’t need fast AF or large aperture in low-light situation nowadays with my NEX 3 when focus peak works.
I rest my A700 for such shots.

7 months ago |I completely agree. Both the Panasonic and Olympus seem to have improved autofocusing in the latest generation bodies. When using them for interior shots, I certainly notice how quick m43 bodies are.

^^^ Funny!!! How a camera review has anything to do with limited lens range?

7 months ago |I am photo-novice, but considering buying the NEX-7.
The lesser auto focus speed and the auto focusing in low light, has been a pointed out in all the reviews.
Is this a hardware issue or a software issue (or both)?
At least if it is software issue it could be corrected by Sony in time (?)
Please advise.

7 months ago |Just frustrated there is no microlenses technology to allow the use of M-Mount lenses on Nex-7. Then, go back to Nex-5n. How could Sony didn’t think about it ? Nex-7 could have been the first real competitor of the Leica M.

buy which ever NEX camera you want. Don’t know what a microlens
is but you don’t need anything other than a step ring.
