Sony NEX-7 review by Steve Huff (and 100 Euro price drop at Sony France!?!?)
Sony Nex-7 HD Video Samples – AZ State Fair 2011 (Steve Huff).
Steve Huff (Click here) posted his full NEX-7 review. It is a very long, detailed and personal view on the NEX-7. There is a lot to read, analyze and see. And I couldn’t agree more with Steve when he says: “all in all, this is a killer camera system and the NEX line has now matured into a camera that most of us have been asking for over the past 2-3 years. This will be a big one for Sony. Mark my words!“. The NEX-7 is indeed the hottest camera announced this year. Let’s hope the Thai flood will not delay the release for a very long time. George Boyd, a spokesman for Sony, told the BBC: “However, we are taking measures to move production to our third factory in Thailand which is operational and also to other sites“.
A couple of more NEX-7 related news:
Focus Numerique (Click here) posted a NEX-7 image gallery. New NEX-7 Photocomment poadcast (Click here). One more thing: For unkown reasons we noticed a huge price drop on the NEX-7 at Sony France (Click here). -100 Euro!!! A bit weird if you think that it is not even in Stock!
The NEX-7 can be preordered at Amazon, B&H, Adorama, J&R, eBay. ALong that two amazing new NEX lenses, the 50mm f/1.8 at Amazon, B&H, Adorama, J&R, eBay and the Zeiss 24mm f/1.8 at Amazon, B&H, Adorama, J&R, eBay.

2 years ago |Is it just me, or did I see some of that color banding noise popup in Steve’s sample video?
Mike
2 years ago |The color banding is not a problem with the NEX. It is a problem with the refresh rate of certain types of lights and the shutter speed used for the video.

2 years ago |Thanks for clarifying, that’s something important to watch out for when shooting video.

2 years ago |FYI, there was a huge price drop (-300€) for the A77 also at Sony France at the time… It was a mistake that was corrected after… But I had time to order mine at 1600€ instead of 1900€!

2 years ago |Sony France (Click here) link is wrong , goes to sony.de , not to sony.fr
Allan
2 years ago |NO !! it is correct !! Sony france is less expensive 1100 € for nex 7 body only !!!

2 years ago |I think i am going to return my a77 and wait for the NEX 7 with the LE EA 2 adapter.
I think i hate the A77 more than anything. The autofocus on the A77 is INSANELY fast… like almost instant! But the quality just doesnt match the A900… especially at higher ISO. I did a basketball shoot yesterday and the video quality at 1600 iso was horrible….!
I am going back to the Sony Store in London today to see if I can return it… and wait for the NEX 7.

2 years ago |You’re comparing a full frame with a apsc. And video quality? I didn’t know a900 takes videos…
MF
2 years ago |Yeah I am comparing it. I could compare it to the A700 and it still would be terrible. Whats your point?
Yeah the A900 does do video… didnt you know??
Solo
2 years ago |You expected the A77 to match the A900? What on earth are you smoking? Do you think the NEX7 matches the A900?
APSC < FULL FRAME, should be obvious really.
if you can so quickly jump from two completely different systems/types of camera it sounds more to me like you do not have any idea what you are looking for, or how to use the A77 properly…

2 years ago |er…the Sony Store UK is showing the price for NEX-7 + 18mm > 55mm zoom as £299.99 inc vat right now at this link…something funny going on!!!

2 years ago |I believe what most people want is “Nex5n’s sensor in Nex7′s body”…..
Anu Nyymi
2 years ago |No person of sensor related understanding would want a Nex5n sensor on Nex7 as the latter sensor is the better one. As today’s read noise levels are so low, pretty much all the shooting is done in the photon shot noise limited territory, thus noise for modern sensors is mostly a function of QE. On the other hand, by adding pixels one adds to the signal, thus increasing the SNR. One may want to check out the pellicle mirror camera comparison on Dxomark for confirmation.
Also, I am not sure, but I think the older sensor doesn’t have an electronic first curtain shutter either. This is a big deal with mirrorless cameras.
The Lotus Eater
2 years ago |The NEX-5N does have electronic first curtain shutter.

2 years ago |You are saying that Sony’s 24mp sensor has a higher signal to noise ratio than their 16mp sensor?
Anu Nyymi
2 years ago |Yes, over most of the image the 24mp sensor should have slightly higher SNR than the 16mp version. Öet’s say we have a subject that’s well exposed. Now the electron wells will have maybe 20-30k electrons, thus the photon noise will be about 150 electrons. The read noise on the other hand will be irrelevant in this situation being only a couple of electrons. So in well exposed parts of the image the finer quantization of the 24mp sensor (ie. higher pixel count) has the advantage.

2 years ago |I don’t want the 5n sensor in the 7. Take a picture with the 16 mm and ultrawide .75x attachment and start cropping in on parts of the picture. You will see where you would rather have higher resolution.

2 years ago |Yet another great review from Steve Huff. The NEX-7 is not a perfect camera by any means, no camera is, but damn it’s looking real good. Can’t wait to get mine.
Clyde
2 years ago |Hell… he sure says “hell” a lot. Three times on the first page alone.
Hell. Where the hell is the wired remote? Why the hell didn’t you mention that Steve?
