Sony NEX-7 with Canon FD and Contax G lens test…
Yesterdays NEX-F3 announcement may not be a hell of a story but we alreayd have a hell of a NEX-7
Here is a list of the latest news and test done with the camera. On top you can watch the video of Doug Kaye and Frederick Van Johnson discussing the NEX-7. The NEX lens range may be limited but you cans till use plenty of third party lenses on the cameras:
Björn Utpott (Click here) tested the Canon FD 55mm f/1.2 lens on the NEX-7: “If you don’t mind the weight though, you’ll end up with a lens that not only has an impressive aperture number inscribed on the barrel, but one that actually produces fine images at that aperture.”
All Canon FD lenses can be found here on eBay (Click here).
Photoheadonline tested the Contax 28mm G (Click here), the Contax 35mm G (Click here) and the Contax 90mm G (Click here).
All Contax G lenses can be found here on eBay (Click here).
Reghardware (Click here) posted a full NEX-7 review: “The camera is not flawless but is commendable, as it arguably delivers the best image and video quality of its class. But this comes at a price and in this respect I’m unconvinced that is particularly good value for money, especially when up against its stablemate, the NEX-5N”

I’m waiting with interest for the NEX-F5 now that the NEX-F3 has the improved Bionz processor with promised better low light abilities. If a future NEX-F5 delivered better image quality than the excellent NEX-5N then why would you pay twice as much for the NEX-7?

2 years ago |Because NEX-7 has a build-in EVF, more manual controls, better ergonomics
Fan
2 years ago |EVFs are useless, NEX-7 resolution is too high, more noise due to the resolution. Customized controls on 5N are very good.

2 years ago |EVF is rather personal preference. Now I have A77 along with A900 and I have feeling that with EVF I’m looking into bad monitor from previous century. Of course, EVF does not influence IQ, but it somehow disturbs to take pictures.

2 years ago |There is no clean and uncompressed HDMI output, which makes the camera unusable for video for me. I know that I may not be the majority, but that is my workflow and is the sole reason why the NEX-7 is out of the running at this point.

2 years ago |I use my Nex5n almost exclusively with my Contax G lenses. As the review said, they all work great on Nex.
Just hope someone would develop a AF adapter. I’ll pay good money for it.

2 years ago |The reviewer saying that the ‘NEX7 is like a phone camera’ is a bit of a sweeping statement. Not many phones with an APS-C sized 24MP sensor, or a lens big enough to hang a coat off.

2 years ago |That’s why I don’t think Sony will release a Zeiss 50/1.2 lens. The returns of 1.2 compared 1.4 are negligible. But such a lens will be heavier and more expensive. It makes much more sense to produce an updated 50/1.4.
I own the Rokkor 58/1.2 converted to A-mount as well as the Minolta 50/1.4.

2 years ago |Agreed it probably won’t be f1.2, but I hope it is. They did file patent for both. Personally, I do see bokeh difference between 50mm 1.2 and 1.4. The goal being to emulate medium format OOFA, a sharp 1.2 like famous Nikkor Nocton comes closest at 58mm.
If designed for it, preferably at 55-58mm, 1.2 has one of a kind excellent distinctive oofa. But every 1.4 I’ve owned gets squiggly oofa wide open. Much smoother at 1.7 or f2 for some reason spherical aberations melt better.

2 years ago |Sony has a lens that is specifically designed to give smooth bokeh, the 135 STF. That’s one of the lenses that really creates envy among Canikon users.
No matter how fast, a normal lens will never come close to that bokeh.
