Sony not going to unveil the Zeiss SSM release date at CP+ show (and fake price info in China).

Digifoto confirmed that Sony will not share any info at the CP+ show about the possible release period of the new Zeiss 50mm f/1.4 SSM A-mount lens. And neither they will unveil the final price. And I also have to debunk a myth that is circulating today. The Chinese site PConline writes the lens will cost 2,200 Yuan which would be 350 in US dollars. That is definitely a wrong info. Zeiss never ever releases a f/1.4 that cheap and they will not do that now. I expect the price to be close to $1,000!

Biggest question for me is that will it have an option for a battery grip ?
Probably not but I wish Sony changed it’s mind about battery grips for lesser models.
Does April mean announcement date or shipping date ?

4 months ago |I’m with you daemur. I think it’s ridiculous that Zeiss hasn’t designed (and released) both a better 35mm f/1.4 as well as a better 50mm f/1.4 than the Minolta versions, cause neither Minolta designs are sharp enough wide open for use with a 24+ Megapixel digital sensor. It shows a real lack of commitment to the A-Mount on both the part of Zeiss and of course also on the part of Sony. I can only hope that both a 35mm and this rumoured 50mm finally do come to market before Sony stops selling native A-Mount cameras. Cause those two primes would make the system relatively “complete” for serious portrait photographers. And if they do “complete the system” I’d be willing to bet that both the A-Mount Zeiss primes and Sony’s a900 and a850 bodies will develop a cult status 10-15 years down the road, not at all unlike the way that Contax 645 AF film bodies and Zeiss medium format primes have. And to those who say that people like me should switch to Canon or Nikon… I’d say that there’s nothing wrong with backing the wrong horse. I’m not looking to own the camera system that turns out to be the market leader for the longest time. I’m looking to create excellent photographs.
mict
4 months ago |I totally agree. Even 35 f2 SSM Distagon could definitely complete a a set of primes.
Sony’s A900\A850 is definitely a jewel camera until now. nothing excessive – just a good pro photo camera that only lacks high-ISO performance.

DtEW
4 months ago |Aside from obvious consumer-side wishful thinking, such a hypothetical move would be incredibly short-sighted for Zeiss, as they instantly de-value eveything they have sold and will sell… unless this $300 Zeiss is so terrible it warrants this price relative to the others.

may we expect Zeiss-Sony lens’ schemas to be published before official announcement of A and E-mount lens?
I am still not sure if I should wait for Planar 1.8/32 or to buy Planar 2/35 instead? I am currious about complexity of Distagon 2.8/12 and simmilarity to other designs.
could You help with that anyhow?

4 months ago |Well, TBH I wouldn’t be surprised by a price of ~750$ in US. In Europe current 50mm f/1.4 got a price of 600 Euro, so 800-750 sounds reasonable, what should roughly recalculate to 750$ in US (considering the “europe is more expensive” factor)

No, the cheapest offer for the 50mm f/1.4 current I can find at the moment in germany ist 335 €. Maybe you talk about the list price from Sony? Btw. in my opinion 1000$ is much to expensive for a 50mm lens even with SSM and Zeiss label on it.
Sky_walker
4 months ago |That’s because this lens was released years ago. 600€ is an official Zeiss price (so, if they’d release this lens today – that’s how much it’d cost). You can go to Zeiss store and check yourself.

4 months ago |I would not be surprised to learn that Sony didn’t know when or if the rumored full-frames would be released.
It sounds like the price of this lens is going to be very high in comparison. The going price for 50/f1.4’s is less than $500 USD and if the rumors are true this lens will cost twice that.
I shoot using the a850 and I own four of the five Sony/Zeiss lenses compatible with the full-frame and I’m starting to question if I’ll be willing to buy this lens right now.
Last summer with the rumor first hit about this lens I would have gladly paid the $1000 maybe even more, but that was when there was a rumored 2nd higher MP A-Mount full-frame in 2013, now that apparently is not going to happen, and the next full-frame may from Sony not even support the A-mount natively with or without an adapter.
Don’t get me wrong, the a99 is a fine camera, but for me to spend $1000 for a 50/f1.4 I need to know that Sony will still be making new full-frame A-Mount cameras after the a99 is no longer state of the art.
Tanglefoot
4 months ago |Perhaps that is why the lens is so slow being released… Is the project stillborn because the top of the line A mount is already dead?
The money for an a99 continues to sit in my bank account. I don’t envisage being able to afford to swap systems in a couple of years if the A mount is dead, so, much as I would love to buy the a99 I’m holding off untill I see some kind of comitment from Sony.

4 months ago |The a99 is getting some amazing reviews – hopefully they’re generating enough sales for sony to continue investing in an FF line. My guess is either (i) Sony’s next a-mount ff will have do away with the mirror altogether, and that’s the reason for the delays or (ii) they’re uncertain about the future of the a-mount and are waiting to see what sales are like (which doesn’t exactly inspire consumer confidence).
Imho they need to release zeiss 35mm, 50mm and 100mm (macro) ASAP. That covers all of the major focal lengths from 24-135mm, which would be a he’ll of an incentive for pros to get onboard
RA
4 months ago |I don’t mind Zeiss/Sony take a few more months to perfect the 50/1.4, as long as the final lens will run circles around top Canikon equivalents.

4 months ago |Lets hope that is why it is taking a long time for this lens to be released. I have been waiting to purchase this lens and Sigma’s 35mm lens. I will also be looking forward to a sweet 16 to 20 prime if someone wants to hint of a good one out there. I still have hopes that Sigma makes the updated 120-300/2.8 available for the alpha mount.

4 months ago |I personally don’t mind the adapter at all. I have one for my nex and I kinda like that it makes the camera look weird. The glass will still be automatic so I would get the 50mm if its really as great as its suppose to be. I have 2 cz A-mount. I plan to get the 85mm and the 50. I don’t think a full frame nex with the adapter will be much bigger if at all than the A99.

4 months ago |I see all these zeiss lenses for the A mount ans i ask myself, whos going to invest in expensive lenses in a company thats not only a 2rd teir dslr maker, but who shows no signs of commitment in that sector. From dslrs to dslts to rx 1 to whatever, who in their right mind would buy a A mount Zeiss when they know full well chances are sony wont be making dslts in a decades time. And yet, sony keep churning them up supposedly, like some market of rich zeiss pros waiting to snatch them up..that is hardly the case. This is why Sony is going nowahere in the camera business, they dont have any direction whatsoever, just keep making new this after this, no foresight, no planning…day to day, year to year.

4 months ago |This lens is the same 1.4 planar from the ZE/ZF mounts and is the same design as the old Contax Yashica 50mm 1.4. A good lens, but you can go on ebay and get old CY manual versions of this lens for $300. Or newer models of the same design for ZE/ZF for $700. Not sure the AF is really worth this much.
CTPhotographX.com
4 months ago |Orly…? What makes you think it’s the same old design? Both 85ZA and 135ZA were different and far better than their Contax predecessors. The 24ZA (and none of the zooms) had comparable counterparts either.
News Flash… All ZA’s are unique designs for the Alpha mount. No doubt the best marketing strategy that either company could engineer. The competition doesn’t want comparison to the ZE/ZF.
CTPhotographX.com

Why do you make such claims when you obviously don’t know anything about these lenses?
The Sony Alpha Carl Zeiss Planar T* 1.4/50mm ZA SSM (SAL-50F14Z) is a new lens design:
According to Zeiss, the lens will have eight elements in five groups including three kitted groups. It will feature two aspherical glass surfaces. Both, the front and the rear group move during focusing. According to Bertram Hönlinger the aperture plane will move as well, however, this could not be seen in the lens diagrams presented during the Zeiss presentation in September 2012. For more details (including cut lens diagrams):

http://www.dyxum.com/dforum/help-want-a99-but-scared-to-leave-canon_topic92685_post1094286.html#1094286
Note, that the ZA lens above is very different from the Carl Zeiss Distagon T* 1.4/55mm ZF, which was also announced at photokina.
So, unless Sony and Zeiss changed the design of the SAL-50F14Z in the past few months, we can expect that the figures above are accurate.

… but I believe the 35f14 ‘G’ lens is a Sony upgrade of the Minolta lens… and that sells for $1500 on Amazon… I honestly can’t see the NEW 50f14 Zeiss lens selling for less than a ‘G’ lens!!!… I could be wrong but I don’t think so…
…and a NEW 50f14 Zeiss lens is probably going to be comparably priced to the 85f14Z which has been around for a while and is still selling for $1700 on Amazon…
Look at it another way… previous comment earlier was asking for a 35mm Zeiss lens to add to the A-mount catalog… Well, imagine if they came out with a New Zeiss 35f14Z lens… if the ‘G’ lens is $1500 how much would the Zeiss 35f14Z be?… got to be more than $1500, right???…
So what would a Zeiss 50f14Z cost?… I would think it would be more than the 35f14Z…
Whatever, you know the Zeiss 50f14 is going to cost between $1500-2000… my guess is still $1800… anybody setting up a pool??…
