Sony promises new Alpha stuff at CES in early January!

SAR reader Daddybit (thanks!) spotted a statement made by Ned Namura, President of Sony Hawaii (on Hawainewsnow). He said that “We’re going to be making some major announcements at the upcoming Winter Consumer Electronics Show. We will be showing a lot of other technologies, not just the Bravia Television, but advancements with the Play Station, also in Sony Pictures, and also in the Alpha Series cameras.”
The CES show starts on January 8th. Don’t worry guys, I am already working on the next bunch of rumors! Stay tuned!

Meantime try our little beta Slidoo eBay website (Click here). This is the link to the RX1 stuff. Sign in with facebook or twitter to change the search settings. It’s funny believe me!

7 months ago |Andrea,
What do you think Sony has in store? New cameras, new bodies, or both? I hope it’s a cheaper full frame. And a new SSM based 24-105mm f4 lens. Any January announcements will probably mean availability in March 2013 (or later).
Of course, at the current sale price of $750, the A57/18-135mm combo is quite a camera kit (here in the U.S.).

7 months ago |All new Alpha stuff is always welcome. I would hope for a new high grade standard zoom. Something in between the price of the Zeiss 24-70 and the 28-75 SAM would be lovely.

7 months ago |Maybe an f21am wireless commander for the a99 hotshoe? Using the f20 with an adapter is just ridiculous….
Also, isn’t the NEX range also alpha branded? Could they be referring to E mount as well as or even instead of A mount?

7 months ago |Advancements in A series cameras…….
Don’t tell me they are finally going to give us A65/A77 users the firmware we have been asking for, like a proper Jpeg engine, better ISO and less sensor noise.
Now that WOULD be an advancement
Yong
7 months ago |omg… dun tell me A99 mkii……. >.<
john
7 months ago |No I think we would see an A88 24 MP FF camera in an A65 body @$1850 to compete with D600 before we see an A99 upgrade.
Davidevil
7 months ago |in the case, the price must be far less than 1600$ to be aggressive in the market

7 months ago |My guess: Release the A-mount CZ 50/1.4, release the outstanding NEX lenses (high performace zoom, and mid-tele prime). Remember that NEX is also branded “Alpha”, not just the A-mount stuff. I don’t expect anything like an A77 successor (much too early for that).

Steve
7 months ago |Okay, who is this guy?
Did Sony send this guy out to leak and create some excitement about this year’s CES or is this guy “off the reservation” and acting like a big shot spreading rumors?
Sony keeps pumping-out terrific new camera bodies showcasing their latest and greatest sensors but never quite closing the deal with the consumer and the photographic community at large.
This fact is unarguable, just look as the various sales rankings.
Sony needs to address the fact that most people willing to spend two or three $K USD are not only looking for a great camera, they are looking to buy into a great system of compatible optics and lighting to invest in and expand into as their photographic needs change.
Nikon has sold 15 million Nikkor in 14 months and hit 75 million in total lenses sold last week. I wonder how many A-mount lenses Sony sells a year.
I hope this guy is for real and Sony is planning on announcing a bunch of alpha stuff and not just some midlevel fool trying to sound important.

7 months ago |Shouldn’t you be writing on nikonrumors.com?
I am pretty excited about SEL 35/1.8 OSS, what about you? Nikon does do amazing lenses, but it is about time they became more innovative, like making a fast 50mm lens with optical stabilization
The Lotus Eater
7 months ago |Indeed Steve, all those profits from lens sales and they still can’t engineer a camera so that it doesn’t disperse oil over the sensor every time you take a photo. They really know how to close a deal with the photographic community, especially when they deny the problem exists.

7 months ago |12month exclusive on the 36mp sensor is up.. I wonder if we will get a new flagship A1 FF.
OneTrackMind
7 months ago |My guess (since everyone wants to know..haha)
SLT-A85 or A88 (that tier of naming) at around $1999 (body only) – Full Frame to compete against the D600. Basically a despec’d A99.
SLT-A1X – 36MP FF – would be cool if it were a square sensor to handle that MP count. That would really start to get people into the medium format world. Think about how the RX1 is so much cheaper than the Leica M9. A cross over Medium format camera from Sony would do the same to the Hasselblads of the world. Photography-centric camera with no real video component to it.
Lenses…can’t wait for the 50F1.4Z that they teased on the A99′s release. I am curious of the cost of that one, but I’m buying it. I love love love my current Sony 50F1.4, so I would love a Zeiss quality version of it for my A99 at FF. Firmware updates for A99 to cover the new lenses and hopefully other firmware updates too.
I don’t think there will be a A77 update just yet. I see these recent price reductions as a way to spread the price points between the A77 and A99 for a tweener product (A85?). I am also thinking that if anything the A35 might drop off the bottom, since the NEX and Cybershots will probably cover that category/price.
This also makes sense to me because it would put put the A77/A99 in the Fall Season and the A85/A1X in the spring season. It gives Sony product dispersion across the year which companies love for fiscal year calendars.
I would really love everything to slow down a bit. I like the idea that some of these cameras would have a little more shelf life to them…now it seems like they are being updated every year which is making expensive purchases obsolete more quickly.

7 months ago |Sony now has a lot of reason to launch the A79:
1.D7200/7D MK2 will come out, Sony’s semi pro aps line would have to keep dropping, which Sony hates, with a79 they can start charging full money for a7x again
2. it’s just another nature step for sony to promote the sale of new iso shoe equipment and get rid of the minolta flash systems, however, genuine manufacturer’s high end flash wont sell well among consumer-end camera bodys(new F60 flash), they can only find home from the semi pro and full frames, thats why a99 intentionally lacks pop-up flash.
3. not to say all these flaws that A77 has, which means we can expect new jpeg engine, faster control response, a deeper burst depth etc.
4. New functions n tech from a99 and 3rd gen.Nex should trickle down to post A77 A-aps lineup, like in camera AF-range limiter, improved light usage by sensor, app, wifi , headphone jack, etc, so sony could say”we are so pleased to offer more than A77, you now pay for the extra, however”
5, a decent semi- pro aps camera can stimulate further sales of fast HQ expensive glasses, flash system, its future aps upgrades, and even full frame! if some heavily crippled A88 were released instead, the user would not change to new body for 3 or more year, which is a big big hurt for the sale of a9x and a7x
What do you think, admin? any rumor of Sony’s strategy for A system for early 2013?

7 months ago |Sorry if I’m wading in a bit late – but it occurred to me that the exclusive agreement with Nikon, where they would only have access to the 36 megapixel sensor, is likely over in the new year. If so, it’d be easy enough to put out a 36 megapixel alpha camera – name it what you will!
Taiga
7 months ago |I would expect at least one updated flash with the new hot shoe, one or two old lenses that receive small updates or SSM. Nothing earth shaking.
I would love to see a new tele like 2.8/200 or 4/300 (or even 4/70-200) but Sony doesn’t seem too invested in designing new marginal lenses, even though they would do good things for the systems credibility.
Rob
7 months ago |The Sony 36 megapixel sensor IS the Dxo’s top-performing sensor, so it’d be crazy if Sony didn’t use it in a new body.
Not Important

7 months ago |I’m hoping for a successor to the NEX-7 or the NEX-6. I basically want an NEX-7 body with a better sensor (i.e. the same as the NEX-6 or better), faster AF, and better corner performance on wide angle lens. I’d live with an “NEX-6N” exactly the same as the NEX-6 except with an extra dial. It doesn’t have to look like the NEX-7 but just an extra dial somewhere.

6 months ago |THATS EASY…
complete alpha refresh (thats why all but a99 had been in sale for the last months, sony its clearing inventory)
a39 24mp
a59 24mp
a67 32mp
a79 32mp
expect them all with wifi and playmemories camera apps, all will be released in the next year, (announcements and release will be spread, and depends in how quickly they can move the actual inventory of each model)
no FF alpha in at least 6 months, but maybe one announcement, sale in late summer/early fall.
expect alpha lenses refresh but in the low market (cheap basic primes, cheap basic zoom ranges) pro market is just not buying sony lenses enough, they will focus in mainstream.
they will accelerate nex lenses, focus in tiny lenses, zooms and primes, they think retractables is the gold mine.
no nex FF, if sony announce one, they will kill all nex pro/prosumer sales (nex 6 is doing pretty well), if they try to sale one nobody will buy it cause they had zero lenses for it (thats why they do the rx1, about that… the rx10, aps-c is there, but they cant decide wich lens put in, hardly in ces, but plausible)
expect more nex mixes in the low range, just to move inventory ala panasonic.
