10 months ago |Every camera in the world can take gorgeous pictures at iso 100. What is most crucial at that iso is good quality lenses with stabilization and proper exposure. Seeing such images is next to useless. for 90% of photographers a camera gets used in the real world. so sure, 20% of the time you maybe able to shoot iso 100 but the other 80% is somewhere between 300-1600 and on last generation full frames acceptable quality at 3200. I would expect decent quality of this generation at 6400 and indeed my friend was showing me properly exposed iso 25600 from his d800 and although they had some noise the detail was still fantastic and the noise was closer to what my a77 would exhibit at iso 3200.
Iso 100 is a ruse. In good lighting even an iphone can take a stellar picture. I remember seeing a video of a guy who controls all lighting and then uses the iphone mounted on a tripod to get modelling pics and you would think it was done on a 5dmII aside from resolution.
This is a gimmick. I have noticed that the medium range iso pics released on this camera seem muddy with washed out details by noise that obliterates them. It reminds me of my a77. I doubt the high iso are useable for anything and Yes.. with zeiss glass and good lighting the iso 100 will looks fantastic. especially when your using slow shutter on a tripod at night etc.
This is a straw man. Sony sold the serious sensor to nikon and now wants to use the second grade sensor. Why does the 36MP beat the 24MP in noise handling? I dont know but I would like too.
All I know is Sony is keeping a lid on this until it gets as many preorders as it can. You can use the nikon d600 to judge the sensor though and minus some quality for the a99 because of alt/phase focusing on sensor (probably obscures light). Also Sony tends to use some compression in their raw where as nikon it seems is less so (especially judging by the file size on the d800 pics.
I am not impressed. Ill probably still order it because I like other aspects of sony, the evf and the flip out screen and all my flashes are sony. But then again.. They overheat all the time.

Not if the shutter speed is 2 seconds like in the night shot above. Try to use a 2 sec shutter speed with your everyday p&s or mobile phone and come back to share the results. I bet most small cameras cannot even do that.

dj
10 months ago |Catalin, the Nikon d600 is number one on the list and the d800 is at nineteen- and been on the list for 198 days. I can’t find the A99 anywhere in the top 100. Maybe I just overlooked it. But I would think this might be of some concern to Sony. Maybe not. Maybe it was expected. Generally when a new camera is announced and there is a lot of buzz about it there tend to be a lot of preorders. This would suggest that is not happening with the A99. I don’t think you can point to price as being the only reason- other expensive cameras are on the list.
Gabriel
10 months ago |That’s not a big surprise. There is not test for A99, and for this price, many people wait, because it’s Sony brand, not Nikon or Canon. With Nikon or Canon you can buy eyes close, they both have a big reputation as pro camera. Sony talks only to people which have sony lenses and an old A900/A850, that’s not a lot of people. In the first place, Sony means playstation, not high end pro camera. Sony make a big mistake by puting away “Minolta” name on their camera.
Carl
10 months ago |Everyone’s waiting for the inevitable NEX-9, perhaps?
I’m not planning on upgrading my A900 to a A99, for what it’s worth. It’s not like it’s a bad camera, I just don’t find it offers a big enough value proposition.
Supposing hypothetically that I was a Nikon shooter, I imagine I’d find the D800 a significant upgrade over the D700.
dj

10 months ago |i dont think its mainly a question of pricing. i met some pro photographers lately and non of them knew about the RX1 or A99, they simply didnt care about Sony.. i think Sony still has a long way ahead to get into the minds of people as a serious pro photo brand, not because they are not good enough or too expensive but because they lack reputation. they definitely are on the right track though, but still didnt grow the balls to actually say their stuff is for pro´s. they still kind of aim for the semi-pro & enthusiast.
Fritz
10 months ago |It’s the lens line up.
Chad
10 months ago |Definitely not. I am a pro that switched from Canon after 12 years. The CZ lenses (and EVF in the A99) are what drew me to Sony, not what kept me away.
In general I would say the reason it is tough for Sony to make inroads to the Pro market, or even a larger share of prosumer, is the brand name and a lack of understanding in the market that the legacy Minolta platform is excellent. I’m sure 9 out of 10 shooters would not even know that Sony purchased Minolta and uses that legacy for their DSLR lineup. Consumers just think “oh Sony, they’re a gadget company.”
And most shooters tend to have a brand loyalty, even if it is misplaced. So getting them out of Canon or Nikon when they have thousands of dollars in lenses is difficult, especially if they don’t know anything about the Sony platform or that the Zeiss and G lenses often best their lenses.
I think Sony is doing the right thing – innovating through technology. It has generated good critical approval and people are starting to take notice. But I do think they need to cultivate a “Pro” program that enrolls pro shooters using Sony gear and provides preferred service, loaner equipment, etc. – much like Canon’s Platinum Membership service. And they need to market the hell out of professionals using their gear, showing other pros that some of the best in the business are using Sony gear.

10 months ago |Marketing is key, unfortunately Sony don’t do it. They have/had some APS-C cameras with a spec list that knocked the crap out of Canikon, but very few knew they existed. It’s a travesty.
Chad
10 months ago |The thing is, Sony markets very well to the consumer market. I am continually impressed with their NEX marketing as there is nothing comparable on TV from Olympus/Panasonic/Fuji/Canon or Nikon (well, Nikon does have Ashton Kutcher but I don’t think he is getting it done for them). They are just nailing the younger market segment (20-30 year olds) which strikes me as very smart.
That segment was raised on technology and I think they get what Sony is doing.
Pascal
10 months ago |I agree entirely with Chad.
In fact, it’s not just for Pros that Sony need to work on after sales service. Any amateur who dishes out $2800 on a camera has every right to demand exceptional service. Unfortunately, as much as I loved my past Sony cameras, Sony customer service was *absolutely abysmal* when one of them broke down. Today, that’s the one thing keeping me from buying the RX1.
Sony have a consumer electronics background. They really need to convince the world they understand the pro & prosumer photographer market if they’re ever going to play with the big boys.
Chad
10 months ago |Yes, dealing with Sony Service in Laredo is comparable to a bad trip to the dentist.
WTH
10 months ago |Chad,
We are in agreeance!!!
Sony does lack the marketing and foresight. Sony is sometimes driven by innovation rather than listening to what the consumers wants. It’s a double edge sword. Sometimes they create weird shit that makes me laugh and sometimes they redefine stuff and amazes me.
Sometimes, I wonder why Sony didn’t do something, it’s like they are 9/10 there and all they need to do is add the 1/10 to complete the product. However they always fail to put in that 1/10 and that 1/10 is usually a very important part of the everything.
Imagine, if they put a full frame into the A77 and increased the price by $400. Imagine if they put a Medium Format Sensor at 24MP into the A99 allowing it to take ISO up to 256,000 with the enlarge photo sites.
Imagine if they put a new PDAF module in the A99 with 39-51 points spread out across the entire frame.
Imagine if they added wifi across all their cameras allowing cross connectivity to other devices like a TV/Storage/PC/Tablet.
Imagine if Sony released a tablet with a very high resolution screen that is built just for reviewing photos and video.
Imagine if the RX1 was built with a E-Mount and was designated the Pro Nex Series….

The RX1 is a perfect example. For the love of god Sony, if you are going to charge $2800 for a FF compact, put in a tilt screen or an EVF – either one, I’m not picky. And I’ll pay $3000 for both.
The tilt screen is one of the greatest innovations that Sony implements very well and they have me addicted. Not having it in a Sony product is just wrong. I swallowed that bitter pill with the RX100 but not going to do it with the RX1.
pancanikonpus
10 months ago |You are wrong, but I cannot proof it to you. price is a main factor- if sony priced a99/rx1 at $1999. No one will look at D600 and 6D. If Sony priced at $1899, all existing old FF owners (D700, 5DMK2) jump to Sony instantly, if sony price at $1799, all high end apsc dslr shooters from 650D, 7D, D7000, A77, GH2, XPro1, OMG5 switch to Sony. if sony continue mark the price down to $1499, Sony dominate the interchangeable lens system camera segment. Having cheaper price, user have more money to get good lens such from carl zeiss. furthermore, lens without IS is more cheaper as well. that help ppl to consider it in jump ship.
But the problem, Sony will not do it and sony did not hold any bargin chip to get people to choose it!

Steve
10 months ago |I’m interested in seeing image comparisons between the RX1, a99 and any third-party cameras using the same Sony sensor. Such a test of the final output of a camera to me is the key to how well Sony is doing with its innovative SLT technology.
Sony a99 has so much going for it with in camera stabilization, the EVA, image peeking and all of the benefits of not having a mirror flapping up and down including but not limited to high burst-rates. This is all great stuff, and having access to some of this stuff is more important than few percentage points in image but not much more than that please!
It’s frustrating for me, and I believe for many others reading this blog knowing about all of the strengths Sony has and does bring to its products that is conspicuously fails to convince more people to buy into the SLT camera.
Image quality test are just one part of the camera selection process, but for me at the very end of the selection process the quality of the final image product is more important than anything else.
If the a99 creates images that are equal to the Nikon d800 and the new Canon 5d, even at $2,800 and with many fewer lenses the Sony look like a bargin.
Dirk
10 months ago |The RX1 is and will not more than a niche product.
@Steve
“many fewer lenses”? Ok. In direct comparison – agreed.
But! Why need much more? Just to mention for serious photographers: Zeiss 16-35/2.8, 24-70/2.8, 85/1.4 and 135/1.8 and the upcoming 50/1.4; additionally the G 35/1.4, 70-200/2.8, 70-400, 300/2.8 and 500/4; a very capable 100/2.8 Macro and an excellent 150/2.8 five star 3rd party Macro. Everything available.
So what?
A 400/600/800 is at the moment to expensive to design due to lack of market share.
My personal feeling is that Sony isn’t doing good in marketing. Not only winning one/two/three top photographers to advertise Sony.
A big issue for professionals is the third party market for professional accessories. The decision to go for a ISO accessory shoe with the A99 and the NEX6 is in my point of view an important step for that.

Lollino
10 months ago |It is very simple.
Sony decided to put a fix lens on it because they could not make more than one for now. this way you cannot complain that there are not enough lenses for this camera since you cannot even change the lens.
End of the story.
Saber
10 months ago |Hi Lollino,
You do realize that my post was essentially positive, right? No need to whip out a capital defense. It’s just for me personally; I need more for that sort of money. I’ve been down the primrose path with Leica and it was great …for what it was. But even with three Leica primes I felt limited with my options, even though I felt I had the best quality money could buy. Today, I simply have to pick my horses more carefully and I have learned that a potentially ‘closed’ system can be very regrettable. IF I were buying today, it may well be a different model or perhaps a different platform. Uncertainty sucks!

Whatever their merits, I can’t believe full frame A-mount DSLT cameras will ever make a real dent in the full frame DSLR market dominated by Canon and Nikon.

10 months ago |I think you are talking about two different things. On one side people want the best camera (and system) possible, and that include you, I guess. On the other side other people want the brand of their cameras to be succesful, so that they will be able to produce better cameras and improve the overall system in the future. Different approaches, but both reasonable, I think.

Or is this a feat of hobby-photographers in general?
I have another theory: all Sony chats are flooded by fans of the competition, out of fear, that those cameras could catch too much marketshare of their beloved hardware in the future. It could be pure envy!
(mind the term “in the future” please!)
Dear fellow photo-fans: Sony is putting up some good equipment at a justified price-perfomance ratio. There is no reason to only rant about it!

10 months ago |I dunno. Pentax users (well, the serious ones) always took me as more tortured souls than Sony shooters, even during the dark days waiting for the A700 replacement. No matter how baffling their decision making can be, there’s no question Sony will keep making cameras tomorrow, whereas during the Hoya era there seemed to be a foreboding that their brand would end up on the refuse heap of history.
Could be worse, though, they could be a Sigma user.
Gabriel

Sony have NEX3, NEX5, NEX6, NEX7, A37, 57, 77, 99 to play with (Hey Pentax/Ricoh, i want a cheap FF, please ). There is only lacks in pancake lenses for NEX. The new FF E-Mount camcorder don’t even have native lense and must use an adapter

10 months ago |Nikon always seem to come out with dreadful sample images. I never did fully understand why, given they make great gear.
Sony have some great sample photos…on their Japanese site. It’s a shame they don’t push them more. Their samples for the lowly A57 were better than their competition make for their pro bodies.
Trevor
10 months ago |If Sony does enhance the next RX with interchangeable lenses and EVF do you think they’d do a trade in with the RX1? The lens on that camera body is very valuable, and to have it collect dust in case the electronics side decides to crap out would be a shame… Although I have no clue how these things are built so I don’t know the feasibility of such a thing.
Technology moves so fast and having a wait and see approach to what’s on the horizon will leave me waiting forever… I like the fixed lens. It limits yet at the same time frees you. If you know what your camera is capable of you’ll get the most out of it… Also if I paid the 3000 for a FF DSLR and wanted to buy the equivalent lens it would cost another 1000 – 1500. I’m a hobbyist but I want this camera especially if the IQ is great.

10 months ago |Hi Treveor,
I am new to photography and since couple of months back I own a NEX-5n. I have also got myself a legacy lens to play around with and learn. Last week I had the only remaining 24mm 1.8 in the shopping basket. But then then I saw the rumors – FF NEX! This made me to stay away from the deal.
Knowing FF soon will be available for the masses, how can I be sure that the NEX e-mount won’t be redundant in five to ten years when the camera will crap out. I would find myself sitting with all the nice and expensive lenses that I’d collected over the years with no fitting camera. Maybe it is smarter to start collecting mf m-mount lenses. Because there will always be an adapters available.
Neo NiGHTS ®
10 months ago |Hey, Andrea, I have a couple of questions. If you can check with your sources I’d be very glad:
1) Did Sony (at least for now) give up trying to compete in the ‘high ISO’ segment? The rumors say that Canons budget FF will go up to ISO 102400.
If Sony didn’t give the option of a Hi ISO for the 24mp sensor, I don’t think it’ll be with the 36mp sensor.
2) The A99 specs say that the ISO range is 100-25600 (with Lo50 as an extended option). The D600 goes from 100 to 6400 (with two extra Hi options, reaching the same 25600 as Sony’s cameras). Since they’re sharing the same sensor… what’s the native sensitivity of the sensor? 6400 or 25600?
Those are honest, out of curiosity, questions. I’m NOT complaining about Sony (before someone thinks that I’m b*tching about it). And, to be honest, those high ISO, preliminary, samples from the A99 seem VERY promising.
Thanks in advance! Keep doing your fantastic work here

10 months ago |just because the canon may do iso 102,000 or whatever doesnt mean its good at it. id rather a camera limit the iso range to where its good at it
Neo NiGHTS ®
10 months ago |Sure thing. First we’d have to see actual images to say anything concrete about it. But even if the quality isn’t SO great, it’s always useful to HAVE an option, if an emergency arrives.
The Pentax K5 goes up to ISO 51200. Is it bad? Yes, it is bad. But, at least, there’s the option to do so (since a noisy picture is better than no picture at all [depending on your needs]).
Again: I’m not criticizing Sony (nor Nikon). They may very well be a good reason to have stopped at 25600. I just want to know. I’m a curious person
Gabriel

9 months ago |I am NOT impressed by the sample images. As others have said before, even an iPhone can take decent pictures at in good light using low ISO settings and a tripod. Even though we know almost nothing about this RX1 yet, I think it will be a disappointment in the image quality department when you compare it to other full frame camera’s. For some reason Sony sensors just don’t come to life in Sony camera bodies. In Nikon camera’s their sensors really shine. What a waste to put a perfectly good (probably) Zeiss lens on this camera. And then there’s the ridiculously high price! I think the Fuji X-E1 will deliver better image quality in a more flexible package. Even the Olympus OM-D is nicer then this RX1. Maybe the RX2 will be better? But I’m not going to wait for that. No Sony camera for me, ever!
