I suspect its more about limited markup / profit. Here in Australia, the only source of supply I can see is Sony Store, and they want full $2999 AUD retail and have no stock. Might be waiting a while for a price drop.
As a registered Sony customer they sent me a Xmas coupon worth $100 AUD so rather than waste it I have an RX1 on backorder. : – )
