(SR1) A “cheap” A77 rumor and a Leica FF rangefinder rumor (with Sony sensor)
I found two new rumors (They are not from our sources so don’t trust them too much)!
1) Joseph S Wisniewski worte inside the dpreview forum that “My sources say that there’s already M10 prototypes in the field with the same 24mp Sony used in D3X and A900
, but with rangefinder friendly microlenses. Which conflicts with rumors that Sony microelectronics is discontinuing the FF sensors, but hey, rumors are what they are.”
2) A very “weak” A77 rumor has been posted by eprice.com.tw
● more than 30 AF points
● sensitivity up to ISO 25600
● Anti-dust metal body (presumably aluminum-magnesium alloy)
● more complete control and a higher standard button configuration
● larger buffer memory storage than the A55. Takes CF cards
● same NP-FM500H lithium battery
● about 1,500 U.S. dollars
Reminder: Rumor classification (SR = Sonyrumor):
SR1=probably fake rumor
SR2=rumor from unkown sources
SR3=50% chance it is correct
SR4=rumor from known sources
SR5=almost certainly correct!

2 years ago |I’m from Taiwan and I don’t quite believe that sort of thing on eprice. It’s literally a kind of combination of already existing rumors…that’s bit of rubbish… genuinely a pretty weak rumor…

2 years ago |Sony didn’t say they discontinued FF sensors yesterday, but will slow down development for sensors in 5-10 year future.
Nothing wrong with A77 rumor, its just useless. Obviously it will be larger body, more AF sensors (doubt it will 30) and for larger and faster camera CF and NP-FM500H lithium battery should be obvious choices.

2 years ago |If Sony were truly to be discontinuing FF sensor development, then why would they apparently so actively developing A-Mount cameras? If the future is to be APS-C sized, then surely the natural growth direction is on the Sony E Mount. Of course it isn’t ever going to be able to provide an optical viewfinder, but I would have though that and SLT camera supporting phase-detection AF might be possible (unless, that is, Sony so reduced the throat-to-sensor-plane distance in the pursuit of “thinness” to the point where this is impossible – in which case this is surely a major mistake).
What I will be intrigued to see is if SOny develop an FF SLT camera. This could arguably be developed at much lower cost than one with an optical viewfinder. There would be no need to have a very large movable mirror and the optical viewfinder could simply be taken straight from the existing SLT designs. Also, without the mirror the frame rate could be made considerably higher than the A900, the body much smaller, quiter and video could readily be added. In principle, I would have thought that it was possible to produce an FF SLT camera in a body no larger than an A700. Of course this would most definitely require updated sensor and image processor (as the A900/A850 combination are most certainly not up with the best).
I’ll be intrigued to see what happens, but an SLT camera with improved FF sensor would be of considerable interest to me. Hopefully Sony haven’t given up on FF. For some applications there is no substitute for increased sensor size.

2 years ago |Edgars–I am with Ross G: please cite Sony’s announcement that they would slow down FF sensor development.

2 years ago |Sony officially didn’t say anything.
You could read it different way: Sony will not base their camera line on FF sensors. How many Sony FF sensor announcements you remember? For DSLR I know just one. If you compare it to APS-C sensor releases difference is 10 times or so. FF cameras aren’t profitable, at least for Sony, therefore it is no top priority.

2 years ago |Edgars, I’m with Ross G and Dulaney Ward:
FF camera line is basically aimed at the higer-end market which will not be a “base” of any camera company whatsoever, not even Nikon and Canon.
To be short, maybe next time you can have your stand better be supported by facts and figures. If not, then could you please use “Sony MAY…” instead of “Sony WILL..”.
