(SR2) A Sony camera roadmap for 2012-2013?
Our Chinese readers shared a link to a XITEK post from a mysterious source. Our Chinese readers said he is a good source but I have no records about him so please take everything with a grain of salt. I repeat this is not a rumor from MY trusted sources!
Here is the camera roadmap from Sony according to the Chinese source:
SLR:
a600, 1830 megapixel, 2012 (March) -> The A580 successor
a950 (a1), 36 million pixels, 2013 (February) -> The A900 successor
SLT:
a37, 16 million pixels, 2012 (March) -> The A580 successor
a57, 16 million pixels, 2012 (May) -> The A580 successor
a99, 24 million pixels, 2012 (September)
NEX
NEX-F3 2012 (March) -> The NEX-C3 successor
NEX-5G, 18.3 million pixels, 2012 (September) -> The NEX-5n successor
Fullframe NEX in late 2013.
I would be really (positively) surprised if Sony would launch an optical viewfinder DSLR. I hope it’s true but I am very very sceptical! But just for fun, let’s do a poll to let Sony know what of the “rumored” cameras you would like to see for real:
I would like to buy the...
- NEX-9 (FF) (39%, 1,713 Votes)
- A950 (DSLR) (35%, 1,526 Votes)
- A99 (SLT) (27%, 1,201 Votes)
- A600 (DSLR) (14%, 606 Votes)
- NEX-G5 (13%, 549 Votes)
- A57 (SLT) (7%, 328 Votes)
- NEX-F3 (2%, 95 Votes)
- A37 (SLT) (1%, 53 Votes)
Total Voters: 4,390
Reminder (SR = Sonyrumor):
SR1=probably fake rumor
SR2=rumor from unknown sources
SR3=50% chance it is correct
SR4=rumor from known sources
SR5=almost certainly correct!

2 years ago |Well that A950 sounds totally sexy, but I’d sooner believe it if someone said they were the descendent of a Nigerian king and wanted to give me 500 million.
Dave Cox
2 years ago |I’ve had a few e-mails promising me that….
Chase
2 years ago |Please o Please,
Give us the A950 everyone would love this if it were true!!
OVF is going to do so much better for composing and exposure evaluation in low light conditions. Hello landscape photographers, we work in low light conditions 80% of the time.
Best dynamic range opportunity is in the sunrise/sunset hours!!!!!
a900
2 years ago |Wow! Can’t wait for the a950 OVF !!
jack
2 years ago |this will be an EVF unfortunatly…
a900
2 years ago |a950 uses EVF ? Nah!
Sony is not that stupid, they DO KNOW that there are OVF die hard fans out there, so it’s the OVF.
EVF is for the a99 and the newer SLT Full Frames too.
sleek
2 years ago |why not make it hybrid EVF/OVF? c’mon sony, you are “sony” you can do this! drag-n-drop!
Pablo
2 years ago |BOOOOOO
So much waiting for a FF NEX :<
Just look at the outcomes of the poll to see, how hyper-mega-turbo stupid SONY is. They just keep NOT DELIVERING the STUFF that THE MOST OF THE PEOPLE WANT!
Don Cox
2 years ago |It isn’t necessarily stupidity, or marketing decisions. The development of a FF NEX will take time.
Top class sensors don’t just happen. There is a lot of R&D needed to get such a product to the stage when it can be manufactured with a high yield (which is essential if the camera is to be profitable).
Then the processing chips have to be developed to handle more data without increased battery consumption.
Sahaja
2 years ago |They would also be mad to launch a FF NEX without at least three good lenses ready for it a launch.
vautrin
2 years ago |Many (most?) of those wanting a FF NEX want to use legacy glass, so Sony doesn’t really have to develop much of anything. Even Sony DSLR’s have a very limited lens lineup compared to Nikon/Canon.
vautrin
2 years ago |The FF sensor for NEX is already developed. It’s the one in the Nikon D800. Just have to wait a year for the exclusivity agreement to expire. in the meantime, I’m sure Sony will be able to tweak it further.
a900
2 years ago |I’m not against the NEX, but I did held a few and it’s far too small for my hands, that is why I’m sticking with the alpha ranges (a900).
The new Full Frame a950 OVF will be a perfect camera for us to buy!
Of course, we need more beautiful Sony/Carl Zeiss lenses too!
hexx
2 years ago |FF sensor would need larger body, so it could possibly be better suited for your hands than current APS-C based NEX cameras – wishful thinking on my part
Harvey
2 years ago |I doubt if your hands are bigger than mine
Do you complain about a cigarette lighter being too small for your hands, or a pen? You’ll just have to get used to the idea that a quality camera no longer needs to be bulky. I haven’t used my SLR in about half a year, and when I take it in my hands now, it feels stupidly large…
Denis
2 years ago |Agree, me too. BTW, the shots taken with APS-C DSLR looks inferior to ones I get with my asph summiluxes 35 and 50 as well as with super elmar 18.
SonyA77
2 years ago |There will always be somebody justifying their purchase.
Denis
2 years ago |@Sony
I’m actually excited with these leica lenses. I had top glasses (Pentax FA Ltds, CZ Distagon 21, CZ Distagon 28, etc). They are very good, but not as good as these leicas.
SonyA77
2 years ago |Where was it said by the poster that a quality camera has to be bulky?
You like your camera, good for you, but others may find it too small. For me, Canon APS-C cameras are too small, others would disagree.
Solo
2 years ago |The point is if you are shooting with glass like the 70-200 2.8, 135 1.8, 70-400G, etc, you want a little more to grip then the tiny little NEX bodies. Do you also realize that the smaller the body, the less room for physical controls, ESPECIALLY if most of it needs to remain clear for your fingertips (not even a hand grip) to grasp???
I would say 75-90% of working pros need a larger body for access to physical controls and stability with larger lenses. I don’t have any problem with the SIZE of my A850, only the weight. IF they can make it lighter, GREAT, but smaller? HELL NO
c.d.embrey
2 years ago |I’m 6″3″ tall and wear size 13 shoes, and have hands to match. Me,I prefer holding a 5n over a Pro Body DSLR. YMMV.
I hold a camera with my thumb and the first and second fingers. If a camera body is large enough for those three digits, than I can hold it comfortably. YMMV.
Solo
2 years ago |you probably have never done a 12 hour shoot with 2.8 glass and a 58FM with velcroed pw mounted. Portrait grip a necessity, sometimes a flash bracket, sometimes large modifiers on the speedlight like beauty dishes, etc. Glad you like your small body but portability has its sacrifices, especially when it comes to professional use. I.e. . . there’s a reason the D4 and D800 arent the size of your cellphone.
a900
2 years ago |Thank you Solo, phew, not just me that have large hands, so am normal then!
Size – cough! cough! – don’t wanna upset the ‘little’ boys!
Sina
2 years ago |I don’t know about you, but I have never thought about bringing my NEX-5N into the studio for professional shoots. That is reserved for the studio MF cameras and my 5DII. I also happen to match the size of c.d.embrey.
I take my NEX-5N everywhere though, where my 5D would usually stay in the car or at home. It is not a pro camera to me. It is a casual camera for the people that know how to take a photograph well.
passer-by
2 years ago |NEX is not for a 12 hour shooting with f/2.8 glass. But, at least in theory, you can add a grip(not necessarily Sony’s) to make small camera look and feel bigger, but nothing you can do to make large camera smaller.
Sahaja
2 years ago |If you’re 6″3″ tall and wear size 13 shoes, globally you’re in a small minority.
jack
2 years ago |i hope so… but according to rumors, it will not be.. wait and see

2 years ago |WHAT ABOUT LENSES SONY!!!!!! TO MUCH CAMERAS!!! PROFECIONAL PHOTOGRAPHERS NEED MORE LENSES!!
Carl
2 years ago |The NEX roadmap is already out there. At this point I expect new A mount lenses to be an afterthought, unless Sony suddenly has a change of heart.
c.d.embrey
2 years ago |The problem with the NEX Road Map is no Pro lenses. I’d planed to buy two NEX 7, until I saw the Road Map. Now I’m waiting to try the Effing-Ugly Olympus OM-5D, becuase they have some Pro-Quality lenses and a 75mm f/1.8 coming at the end of the year.
Because I’m not a fan-boy, I’ll have no problem using a 5n and a FS100 for video and another brand for stills. YMMV.
The Lotus Eater
2 years ago |Please define what you mean by “Pro lenses”.
Denis
2 years ago |1) Long
2) Heavy
That’s it I guess
Solo
2 years ago |pro lens = constant aperture, metal lens hoods, dust/moisture sealing (or at least some sort of measures), top notch build quality (no focus/zoom creep or shaky barrels), SSM/IS. A pro lens and kit lens will both take pics, probably indistinguishable in practical use, but one of them will last a lot longer and get a lot more shots.
c.d.embrey
2 years ago |An 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 isn’t, a Zeiss 24mm f/1.8 is, a 50mm f/1.8 may be, can’t tell until they are actually available.
I’d like a Zeiss 85mm f/1.8, others have requested a 30/35mm fast prime. I have no use for zoom lenses, but I’m sure that something like a 24-70 constant aperture lens would be appreciated by many.
LONG and HEAVY lenses are NOT appropriate for SMALL and LIGHT cameras. If you need to impress people with the size of your lens, maybe you should stick with an impressively large sized DSLR

2 years ago |NEX-5G, … -> The A580 successor – shouldn’t it be “nex-5n successor”?
David Lam
2 years ago |Really good news, my plan
2008 Sony A900
2011 Sony NEX5N
2011 Sony A900(backup as my first A900 SC over 100k)
2012 Sony A57
2013 Sony A950
2014 Sony NEX9 then NEX5N->IR mod
FF DSLR – Studio, portrait, landscapes
APS-C – Sports, Video
NEX – travel, street photography etc
Horses for courses!
Denis
2 years ago |NEX: studio, portrait, landscapes
You can mount leica asph lenses on it. DSLR lenses are inferior.
SonyA77
2 years ago |“DSLR lenses are inferior”.
Yes of course they are Denis.
I am sure dSLR pros will be devastated to hear that they don’t know anything about buying the best kit and will bow down to your superior intellect…
Denis
2 years ago |I don’t care about pros. I know they should to fear people around them with their equipment, but I need the top quality in compact package. In fact, leica lenses gave me superior quality in compact package.
SonyA77
2 years ago |As you keep saying, but that doesn’t make it so.
Denis
2 years ago |> As you keep saying, but that doesn’t make it so.
Dude. You really need to try one. Leica lenses are amazing indeed, they are pleasure to use and results are outstanding.

Solo
2 years ago |Denis, point being your leica lenses aren’t going to magically make your images better than anyone else’s- namely the millions out there that use dslr’s with “inferior glass” that likely make better images than yourself. Get off the high horse. Leica is nice, good for you.

2 years ago |Bring on the FF NEX now!
Harvey
2 years ago |Didn’t you repeatedly say: It will never happen? Regaining hope?
JonasM
2 years ago |For Sony to release another OVF camera I think is to question and to undermine their own strategy. I think they need to go all in on EVF.
Overall this CN post feel like a bunch of conservative guesses, although I’m curious as to why the next NEX-5 will be labeled “G”.
klw10
2 years ago |I do not think so. I can see the OVF a950 being a lot more than the a99. Just what I believe will happen if the a950 ever shows up.
lynn
2 years ago |totally wrong roadmap…
a950 should be the 24mp with better everything than the a900. a99 should be the 36mp to compete against the d800, afterall whats the point of offering same thing as nikon, but 1 year slower than the d800??? that would be a marketing joke. at leaset turn that 36mp sensor into a SLT.
even better if 2 slt ff, 1 ovf ff, 1 nex ff
klw10
2 years ago |24MP in a full frame works great for me. I have the a900 and I love it. For that 36er you better get some more hard drive space!!!

2 years ago |It is funny that camera sales numbers is upside down to votes in forum…
To me it seems like a wishlist.
Raphael
2 years ago |Yeah it´s funny! I think the reason is that here on SAR there are a lot more pros, semi-pros or enthusiasts than let´s say beginners or snap-shooters who care about A35 with kitlens and so on… . Most people reading here are really waiting for an NEX-9, A99 or maybe an A950! So no wonder that FF is on the top!
The Lotus Eater
2 years ago |I doubt that to be honest, Raphael. A lot of people here seem to lack basic knowledge or have any appreciation of the camera market as a whole, hence we get ridiculous requests and wishlists that have little chance of happening.
LEdgars, you make a very good point. I actually voted for what I’m most likely to buy. I didn’t vote for what I would dream for, but have no chance of being able to afford in the near future.
Patrick
2 years ago |I am a professional. I am selling all my Canon gear in favor of nex 7 and lenses. I only bought the sony zeiss 24 1.8 and after that my other lens is a 35mm 1.2 nokton. For a system to deliver in my books has to have a brilliant 35mm (with Canon I had the 35mm 1.4 canon and the zeiss 35mm f2) and a good 50 for portraits and close ups. I rarely use 24 and 21 which my colleages like to use.
When the nex 7 came out, I thought it could give me nice file sizes for magazines and with the 35mm, it completed 90% of my wish list. The size alone asked me to buy it and try it before selling my stuff. I am about to buy a second nex 7 to permanently attach the nokton to it.
Like many here, I want sony to give me more lenses (faster macro regardless of size, if they can have a 50mm f2 macro from zeiss like canon/nikon have from zeiss…I am in) but I find the lenses problems relatively solved with the camera’s ability to take anything in. I want a macro, so I will buy a Contax 60mm 2.8 and get an adapter. If I want a 21mm, I would consider voigtlander or, if I have the cash, the zeiss 15mm.
Really, there is nothing like native mount lenses. So yes, I want more nex lenses for sony and professional grade like the 24mm zeiss which, I can easily say, replaces my zeiss 35mm for canon but gives me a 1/3 stop more and auto focus. Like Charlie Sheen would say, DOUBLE WINNING!
JonasM
2 years ago |Also, why no NEX-7 iteration? I’m banking on a NEX-7 with GPS and improved EVF.

2 years ago |For the same reason there isn’t an A77 (and A65); they’ve been just released.

Oh and here’s the one for october:-)
SLR:
a650, 1831 megapixel -> The A600 successor
a951 (a1), 36.1 million pixels, The A950 successor
SLT:
a38, 16 million pixels, The A37 successor
a58, 16 million pixels, The A57 successor
a99mk2 (ran out of numbers!), 24.001 million pixels
NEX
NEX-H3 2012 The NEX-F3 successor (pink)
NEX-5I, 18.4 million pixels -> The NEX-5G successor
Fullframe NEX in late 2014.
SonyA77
2 years ago |“I might believe it if someone told me this was the roadmap for, say, the month of September”
You sir get the comment of the day prize.
The Lotus Eater
2 years ago |Lots of A580 successors in that list, plus the A600 has 1830 megapixels. All a bit careless and slapdash really.
Although it probably won’t happen, there is a clear argument for keeping OVFs in the upper level/FF cameras. While the latest EVFs eat the pentamirror OVFs from the A2xx/3xx/5xx series for breakfast, it is hard to claim the same when comparing EVFs to the bright pentaprism OVF of the A900 and maybe even the A700. There are advantages and disadvantages to each, so if Sony offer the choice for upper level cameras, then I can’t see that it will really hurt them.
RVN
2 years ago |and where is the new lens?????? no more many camera please, we just need new FF and some new lens. sony didn’t you listen us?
Marius
2 years ago |I just dont get how there will be a NEX type FF camera. I think that all current SEL lenses are made for APS-C size sensor. Where is the fun?
GermanGuy1
2 years ago |Maybe the FF NEX uses A-Mount?
Maybe it is called NEX because of the principle of not having a mirror?
Maybe it has a DSLR-type body?
Marius
2 years ago |And then a user buys a NEX-9 camera and tries to mount a lower NEX but it doesnt fit? Thats wrong.
The meaning of NEX is New E-mount Experience.
I Believe that a fullframe Sony camera will happen, but not with a NEX name. And if there is a rumor of a NEX-9 name, it must be something mirrorles E-mountish above NEX-7.
Unless maybe new lenses will be made for fullframe, and if an older aps-c lens is attached, cropping mode is enabled……
GermanGuy1
2 years ago |Where is it stated tht NEX means necessary E-mount?
Nex are alpha caameras as well and maybe this is the hybrid mount camera ‘announced’ in an earlier rumor. Be also aware that this all rumor/specualtion and not facts.

2 years ago |yes, but it is not the successor to the 900. Thats why its the 850. Its just a dumbed down A900, so asking a successor to it is kinda strange, you might just hope for an A950 and A920 or something

2 years ago |Great to hear that Sony doesn’t give up SLR (no serious photographer ever asked for SLT or NEX)
Great to hear that a cheap A600 will come early (I don’t bother for video capabilities in SLR, if I want to make one I use my Handycam anyway)
High resolution, very sharp jpeg, very quick AF and fast affordable lenses (F2.8 at most) is all a (non) professional is waiting for!
Give us these features for a better price than CANON/NIKON/PENTAX/… and we stay with you Sony for many years to come, it’s as simple as this !

2 years ago |I think after 50 years and tens of thousands of photos, I might be a “serious photographer”. And for me, the NEX series is better than any DSLR.
I look forward to more advanced sensors for NEX.
Patrick
2 years ago |+1 to Don… I too praise the NEX for serious photography and yes, like another comment said, people have to dig the shit from their heads to think that good quality cameras (and image quality) must be bulky.
blabla
2 years ago |I am not criticizing image quality of NEX but user friendliness (I’m not having a baby-hand anymore) and too slow AF for sports, running dogs, …
For the same price you can get a tool and not just a toy
Patrick
2 years ago |Poor comment. Leica’s m6, m7 and m8/9 are marginally larger than nexes and the lenses are roughly same size. Nex 7 has the same amount of dials as my 5d mark ii (aperture, shutter speed and, on the nex, iso) so its the same user friendlyness. The autofocus is not as fast, but I dont need fast. If one does need fast AF, they probably wouldnt be looking at any other place than Nikon or Canon. So you are a troll, mate, poor troll. Contax and Leica had not AF (except Contax N series) but that didnt stop professionals doing their work.
Lets see, Robert Capa, Henri C-B, Susan Meiselas, Avalro Ybarra, Eugene Richards, Eugene Smith…
troll mate, troll
blabla
2 years ago |Sorry but what is a troll?
I guess an idiot? Anyway, I don’t speak that good English and I don’t want to blame you or your NEX, but for me personally this style of camera is just not right. It drops out of my hands very easily (especially NEX 3 and 5) and therefor it is too expensive to be replaced every few weeks. And following a flying bird on display or EVF is just too much stress, I always end up with only the blue sky on the picture
Maybe I’am just too old, but to make it one more clear: I want my DSLR style of camera to stay for many years, if you and Sony wants to make new stuff, it’s ok for me, but the idea to stop the DSLR line instead just makes me run to NICAN, and I believe I’m not the only one !
J Dog
2 years ago |I don’t think you have tried a NEX-7, it simply is just as easy to use as any DSLR I have used. Its grip fits the hand much better than a NEX-5 and it has image quality to rival the 5d
Solo
2 years ago |Good image quality doesn’t have to be bulky, but good ERGONOMICS do have to be larger than the NEX. Sure, the 7 has 3 dials, but really now- you are comparing it to the usability of a mark II? or 850/900? Where are the direct controls for metering, drive, ael, focus lock, dmf?
Have you EVER covered an event or professional venue of any kind using off-camera lighting, triggering them with pocket wizards- strapped to a likely mounted on-board speedlight, using a portrait-grip (wait you can’t on an nex) to hold the batteries you NEED for a 12 hour continuous shoot? Have you done so with a flash bracket again so you can use larger modifiers on said-speedlight, such as softbox, beauty dish, grids, etc? No you likely haven’t- and if you tried to using a small body like the NEX7, you’d take back your idiotic claims. Human beings have hands larger than the NEX, therefore a grip that fits those hands is going to be more comfortable not to mention SECURE over a long period of time. An f/2.8 lens adds weight that needs to be counterbalanced by the body. Mount the 70-200 f/2.8G on the NEX and tell me how secure that feels to you.
blabla
2 years ago |Solo: totally agree with your thoughts . Thanks for putting my ideas in good English
There will never be an understanding for NEX users because they love their expensive toy and don’t want to admit that you just can’t use it under all the circumstances like a good DSLR ( just to mention another one: very cold temperatures where you must wear big gloves to make pictures, even an entry-APSC-body is then often too small )
Solo
2 years ago |Also NOBODY USES THE LEICA m series TO COVER SPORTS, EVENTS, ETC. It excels at fine-art photography, as do NEX, but your expectations for it to cover the full range of professional photography is ridiculous!
Patrick
2 years ago |Mate, you are on crack. I work in reportage and light equipment is key. I don’t use flash because I can hand hold at 30th of a second. You sound like a bit of a wanker so I assume you have issues holding at slow speed. I dont carry a 10th of the gear you do because my job often requires me to be away for a long period of time from home, so I need to bring the essentials and not pack myself with accessories. I am a professional, I just dont do the tabloid photos you appear to do. I dont have to appear to be a professional by compensating my small mind with a massive camera. I dont need to prove anyone what I do other than my clients and they never asked me if I use x y z gear. All that matters is that you deliver and I know I can with the nex.
Nobody does events with M cameras? See Paolo Pellegrin story of Milan fashion week. Piss youself with envy mate. Your character is the only block between you and a good photo.
c.d.embrey
2 years ago |I’m more than ready to dump my Canon DSLRs for NEX 7, but where are the Pro-Quality autofocus lenses???
The first company to understand that there are a lot of Pros waiting for a Pro-Quality Small Camera will see a jump in sales. One of the reasons that Canon sells so many Rebels is that viewers see all those white lenses on the sidelines at the Super Bowl and the World Cup.
Patrick
2 years ago |I agree. If autofocus is a must, Sony has to step up in quality offerings. I am happy with manual focusing one of my lenses. I am lucky I do 85% of my work with 35mm, so the 24mm is a real gift and what made my decision to use NEX because it covered my essentials. The other focal lengths I use are 50 (now covered by the nokton 35mm), and macro (for which I will get a manual lens and not the sony one.

2 years ago |Sony should focus on camera-body unification. A body that can adapt to a wide range of mounts.
The A99 should be the NEX-9 with the ability to transform to an A99 and possibly to an A950. Allow the current A-mount customers to migrate their existing lenses with an A-mount smart adapter (LA-EA2). And for those who prefer optical viewfinders, possibly design an A-mount smart adapter with a reflex system.
Now leverage the competitions’existing customers by developing the Nikon and Canon smart adapter with phaze-detect auto-focus, lens stabilization activation, aperture control and EXIF data reporting capability.
Is this too much to ask?
Olaf
2 years ago |I think it should not be “Is this too much to ask?” but “It doesn’t hurt to dream!”.

2 years ago |…and then Nikon and Canon will make a change to their lens mount so that they don’t work with the Sony.
I also don’t see Sony wanting to give money to Canon and Nikon through lens sales!
Atlasman
2 years ago |Think of it as sending a trojan (NEX-9) into the enemy camps. Canon nor Nikon will change their mounts—just as Sony is having difficulties changing theirs—and their marketshare is like a flee on the rump of an elephant.
When the Windows operating system became the dominant platform, Mac had to learn to play nice and build all kinds of bridges. Nikon and Canon are the dominant platforms and Sony should be building bridges.

2 years ago |To the site: silly survey, as you’ve excluded what’s basic to any survey, namely “not interested in any of the above.” If Sony ever looked at the survey, they could easily draw the conclusion that the public prefers at least something on the list.

2 years ago |Why do people obsess about a fullframe NEX? The lenses are already big enough. Any larger and they would make the compactness advantage of a mirrorless camera irrelevant.
Sony would be better off trying not to overcome the laws of physics and just to develop an APS-C sensor with quality equal to full-frame. Maybe take the MP down to 20 and use tricks like Sigma or Fuji use to get more detail out of each pixel.
PhotoNut
2 years ago |Dude. FF does not mean larger lenses or larger body. Afterall, I’ve had 35mm compact film cameras that were smaller than the NEX7.
The Leica M9 is FF yet it is smaller than any other FF camera out there.
The Leica “M” moun fast lenses are smaller than anything Sony produced for the APS-C NEX line (with maybe exception of 16mm f/2.8 crappy lens).
Once you get rid of the mirror and can put the lenses close to the sensor, then you do not need to make large/long lenses.
Mr M
2 years ago |The Leica M are manual lenses without AF motor/drive. Plus the lens design is different from the NEX/APSC lenses.
If a FF NEX can take the E mount lenses and has marginal increase in lens size , that would be a winner in my opinion. of course , Lens quality shouldnt be compromised. Thats the engineering challenge for Sony Alpha and NEX team

Can’t they just name them:
The Great Big Sony.
The Good Big Sony.
The Good Small Sony.
The OK Kinda Big Sony.
The OK Too Small for Some Sony.
The Crappy Lil’ Sony.
The Sony that will be discontinued/replaced a week after you get it Sony.
The NO Firmware update Sony.

2 years ago |where’s the a850 successor? that’s what i want that could beat the shit out of the Canon 5D MKIII and Nikon D800
Luis
2 years ago |I would like to buy the… Nikon D800E. I’d like the A950 (as shown in the “roadmap” as an improbable rumor) but I’d have to wait and then some more, perhaps wait for something that’s never going to happen.
My Amazon.com cart as of yesterday: D800E (when it becomes available, around april), 24-70mm 2.8G, 85mm 1.4G, Vertical grip (when it becomes available), extra battery, SB910 Speedlight and of course a big case to put all that in.
This is an sour and sweet decision, does anyone has any suggestions on what else to get or if it might be better to wait on Sony forever, thank you.
Clyde
2 years ago |“…any suggestions on what else…”
Sure… Return it all and spend the money on funding a photo excursion with your existing camera, make quality prints, professional framing, and a promotional campaign to promote an art show.
Luis

Anyweay, you forgot to add a tripod in your list!

2 years ago |I do not think there is any chance in the near future for a 950. Only if the SLT flops will we see a 950 or similar product. I just shot a basketball game and for the fun of it I used a nex5n with a LEA2 adapter, zeiss 135 and the EVF. I can say that I do not mind shooting with the EVF and actually over time preferred it to my 850, which tended to look a little dim in comparison. The other thing I really ejoyed was the focus ability. While the 135 is not the fastest focusing lens and has tendencies of searching for the focus it performed rather well in this scenario, far better than on my 850 which I would never use for action shots (the lens not the camera) However, the pics out of the 5n always need a little work because the pics seemed to be a little flat in comparison to the pics out of the 850. I have to do a little more experimenting to see if this is the camera or the SLT adaptor. But what I am saying is that I am very intrigued by the speed of focus and fps is with the SLT. The EVF is not a problem for me, but I have not used it in a studio environment. I am really looking forward to the 99. I just see how the 850 images are better than any APC I have seen to date for overall sharpness and color. I just hope Sony has less hiccups during the 99 release than it did with the release of the 5n with its clicking and the 77 with its minor issues and lack of timely firmware updates.

2 years ago |To be honest Sony destroyed quite a bit of my E-Mount enthusiasm by not giving Lens Compensation to NEX-5 with their last Firmware Update – would have been the perfect finish for this product. So I’ll might buy the SEL-50F18 and probably a NEX-5N when it’s price drops in autumn after NEX-5G introduction (I don’t want another Megapixel increase, but the SlowMo & Lens Compensation, of course). Then I’ll check the full frame NEX how to continue in the future…
e
2 years ago |Lens compensation data should be stored in the lens. Anything else is a cludge.
Strange that this doesn’t seem to be part of the design.

2 years ago |please sony give us an A950
Seeky
2 years ago |Full frame NEX will give us another new type of mount. an FF NEX with A-mount will be like the new Pentax K01, and will not be the appropriate solution for a rangefinder like camera, which is compact due to the short flange distance. However, I’m ready for all this, but rather sooner than later actually.

2 years ago |Not sure it can spell the end of Phase One and Co. as there is quite a bit of a gap between medium format and 35mm format but it will be nice to have something better at high iso than A900 while maintaining similar capability in other regards, that is certain.

2 years ago |It would be nice to have a SLR 950 but the earlier rumor was two SLT’s, one 24 and the other 36mp. I still believe this given Sony’s recent history. I think the only way Sony feels like it can impact this camera segment is with innovative and new ideas like EVF’s and SLT with its fast focusing and high fps. Nikon and Canon just don’t really give any reason to leave in favor of Sony. In other words can the 950 be that much better than the Nikon 800 to cause new serious photographers to not choose the Nikon. If I didn’t use Sony points to buy my equipment I would have probably preordered the 800. At least the SLT gives Sony something the giants don’t. I think Sony will take this chance since there are advantages and Sony probably believes it can minimize the disadvantages of SLT over time. I have been impressed with the SLT’s ability to focus accurately and fast and that was with the LEA2 adapter on a 5n. I am looking forward to any FF at this point.
