(SR3) More rumors about the A77 and A55 successor (+ new kit lens)
Just came back from a 3 days trip and now I have time to post new rumors. We are getting closer to a very exciting time and I am in touch with many sources to get reliable info about the next cameras and lenses. Let’s start!
The same source that sent us the NEX roadmap also sent as a few info about the Sony A77 and the A55 successor (already?).
This is the text:
“Together with NEX-7 and SLT-A77 sony will also release the successor of A55, may A66? and a newly designed 16-50mm kit-lens for D-SLR. I´m a little confused about the early specifications from A66?, it sounds same like A77 with less speed “just” 10fps vs. 12 fps, different body and differences in EVF (both OLED). ”
I heard from trusted source that Sony wants to implement the OLED technology in their future electronic viewfinder. So this part should be definitely correct. I am a bit surprised to hear that Sony has already a new A55 successor in the pipeline. Wonder why Sony should do this, the A55 is selling very well (proove is that only Amazon has them in Stock).
As usual if you have rumors to share please contatc me at sonyalpharumors@gmail.com. Every piece of info helps! Thanks!

Any Zeiss rumors?

3 years ago |No, they are not the same. Zeiss rumors will follow soon…

Evolution is always good. This is just the beginning of the SLT technology. Sony is still finding out how the market for SLT’s works. No wonder they want to get to the next level with the succes they are having with the A33 and A55.

3 years ago |This must imply soon…as it will depress A55 sales while people wait for the newer version. Maybe Feb announcement for April availability as someone suggested.
A 16-50 might be very nice range …hopefully compact, good/better IQ and faster than a larger range zoom. Nice to start at 16 though like my 16-105mm

What I hope for is constant aperture. Yes, I know, I can get very decent Tamron with f/2.8 and similar range, though… it’s really weird that Sony doesn’t have any similar lens. If you’ll look at the Sony photo(art?) of the lens you’ll see that it has really big front lens giving a nice chance for constant f/2.8
*holds thumbs!*

3 years ago |Any more information about the spec of A77?? New Sensor? So is confirmed the 3 Sensor camera is not same camera as A77…I hope they doesnt come out with 2 cameras that is gonna give us a hard time to choose which to buy…

3 years ago |Is it possible that 16-50mm is a new weatherproof lens designed for A77 ? ( it will be a first for Alfa line).
Ezio
3 years ago |just on side… if this is going to be a kit lens, then there’s almost no possibility of this being a revised Tamron 17-50 f2.8… which is a good thing!

3 years ago |Does anyone know when FF mirrorless would be out? and would it be SLT or NEX?
Adi
3 years ago |Ful Frame mirrorless like an NEX9 ? I would say 2 years at least down the road.

3 years ago |Only reason for me not buying A33/55 is overheating of sensor whilst filming.
Sir, here are the keys to your Porsche. You can drive 180 in the summer, no problem. But only for 4 minutes. What kinda nonsense is that. To me a failure, for the rest SLT looks promising.

3 years ago |You do realize that without SSS, the Sony SLTs have as good as continous film recording time as DSLRs from Canon, Sony and Pentax. It’s not just Sony’s sensors that overheat, although SSS excacerbates the problem. I don’t know too many people who would want to record for hours continously using a single DSLR (although admittedly, nine minutes with SSS on is a little short). Using stabilized lenses, however, can alleviate some of the problem (Sigma lenses). Hopefully, as sensors evolve, the hear problem will be tamed better.

3 years ago |+1 to Bartdeluxe!
I observed many ppl ask you about the information. Sound like you are the ‘insider’
from reading your replied. sound like sony yet to fix video filming over heat issue which is put a downpoint to the so call revolutionary breakthrough camera lol
With the released at Jun/Sept soon, believe that will push for GH2 price drop (hopefully) eventhought I put high hope and wait for A77 & Naix7.
continue reading the miserable rumors lol

3 years ago |There are no stabilized lenses for Sony (to my knowledge and with SSS it would not make any sense to have them)
A photocamera is to take pictures and a camcorder for filming. That is why I have both. Call me old fashioned. In a few years it will have evolved and hopefully the camera’s will not catch fire anymore.
Unless the iPhone is integrated as back-screen and a beamer function has been added. HD quality of course.

3 years ago |I think the 3 sensor camera will be another video-orientated body like the VGC-10. Very good news on the OLED EVF’s, if true. They are also used in sony’s pro video camera line up.
Camaman
3 years ago |OLED EVF and hopefully 1024×768 resolution at least…

3 years ago |This would be really nice. And no visible lag… that’s a must for me.

3 years ago |I’m not surprised that an A55 successor could be on the cards, Sony release a new wave of compacts each year and they would want that sort of market that always upgrades in quick succession, at least in the lower end of the market.
Also, by expanding the lower end, they give themselves plenty of chances to make the the A77 and A9x series a chance of success, with a Sony based market already there. Sony struggled with the A700 and their full frame bodies despite been excellent cameras.
Mafiosito
3 years ago |Q is right creating a solid base is important for semi pro and pro consumers. I can’t wait for the a77, I just hope it’ll be worth the wait. I know it’s coming but Sony better live up to the hype, my a700 has served me well.
hanugro
3 years ago |Hm, if the A66 is the same size as A5xx and can use their grip (and batt), then I will definitely buy this instead of A77. Don’t really need 12fps.

3 years ago |Any rumors on NEX-7′s release timeframe?
someone
3 years ago |the 16-50 is F2.8 with new design, it is NOT tamron rebadge. it will look a lot like the 1680CZ design but shorter, but heavier.
the A66 will have bigger body (a little like A550/580) and GRIP option.
A77 is much bigger with few extra custom button (customizable), top lcd, the oled EVF will have much clearer and less rgb tearing.
Ezio
3 years ago |is the lens weather sealed? full frame? and is A77 weather sealed?
someone
3 years ago |nope. and nope, DT. A77 is sealed like all previous model, but not sure will sony market it as weather seal or not. to me, weather seal is overrated marketing.
hanugro
3 years ago |Well, nice to hear A66 is bigger and hopefully at least have same batt with A5xxx. I know I am asking a bit much for it to have same grip as A5xxx. My biggest complain with A55 is its smallish batt.
someone
3 years ago |A55 was intend for family uses, ladies market (like how Nex hit the ladies market, nex user are 65% ladies now(asia)), not targeting professional photographer, they have the A580 for the job. again, Professional PHOTOgrapher. if u are a videographer, look for a proper vidcam instead,…

3 years ago |i am hopeful that with the release of the 5 inch lcd accessory, Sony is getting serious about video and manual controls in the new bodies and in firmware updates.

3 years ago |I get more excited after hearing more and more news about the possible specs of the a77. Hopefully announcement won’t be too far away. I’m hoping for maybe April/May. I do wonder though about Sony’s number scheme. Whats after a33 a55 a66 a77?
On a different topic. Admin, what happened to you’re facebook page? I can’t find it anymore =(

3 years ago |I’m not sure if the “A55 Successor” is actually a successor.
It’s more like what A33 was to A55. Same design only few differences (sensor and speed most notably). I wouldn’t call A33 a successor of anything, just a cheaper alternative.
And so the second speculated camera seems to be only a cheaper alternative to A77, certainly not the A55 successor. Not in that short time.
(ps. And where’s my dreamed OVF alternative to A77?!
bleah)

3 years ago |I agree. It looks like Sony likes to release camera in pairs.(NEX3/5, A33/55). They are related but the higher level has a few added features which justify the price. Probably the marketing shows that it works. They tend to sell (at least for A33/A55) models the lower one in big box electronic stores and reserve the higher one for specialized and online retailers. We could see the same approach for A66/A77 – share many components ( like the ame sensor ?), but one will use a smaller plastic body the other magnesiun alloy one, and like the rumors say maybe an improved EVF and LCD ( like the higher model using OLED and the lower LCD). I expect the kit lens to be the same.
The price diffeerence should be not huge maybe $200-250, which covers the cost and adds some margin but not very big. The strategy is to sell to a larger market than to have a high margin on the more advanced model. In a way the lower model “subsidizes” the higher one as it uses a lot of the design/ components but sells to a higher group. This is a change in the traditional strategy, to sell advanced models at high price with high margins.

3 years ago |The current kit lens 18-55 must be revised because its optical resolution does not suffice to resolve even the 16 Mpix sensor of A55, not to mention the forthcoming sensors which will surely have a higher pixel count (some claim 24 Mpix etc.) I’m telling this after doing a large number of tests with the current kit lens and A55. Also, lets hope the build quality of the new kit lens will be better (18-55 is cr.. in this regard).

3 years ago |It’s a kit lens people! What makes you think it’s going to be weather proof and a constant 2.8??? It’s probably just going to compliment video (fast and silent focus) and be like f3.5-4.5.
A55 is selling way to fast for a successor. I think they may be talking about the a77.

3 years ago |YESSSSSSSSSSSSS!!! successor or replacement or replacement for a55 means that it will drop price soon! WOHOO.
