(SR3) NEX-4/5/VG10 firmware update coming this week?

A new source (Thanks!) just contacted me to say that the “Nex3/5/vg10 firmware could come as early as dec15“. Indeed the new VG10 manual is already available as pdf (Click here / via NEX-VG10 forum).
P.S.: I didn’t hear yet about the new A77/A65 2.0 firmware update. But as soon as I hear something from my sources I will let you know!

6 months ago |I cant believe it takes sony so long, why couldnt they deliver this first and then the VG20? it is so dumb… toss the year old product and loose 35% of its value for a new product that comes from the first?”! HURRY AND POST THE FW Sony! ASAP!

6 months ago |Absolutely NOTHING updated for NEX-3/5 users who don’t have a LA-EA2 adapter. Very disappointed as some of the new features in NEX-5N can totally be ported to NEX-5 with firmware update.

6 months ago |Can’t really believe that Sony will do something that stupid, since Lens Compensation would have stimulated me and probably others into buying the new lenses. They did so well with Focus Peaking and hopefully won’t miss this chance. Who wants to be forced into buying a new camera after only one year just because of Firmware Limitations?
JonasM
6 months ago |I’m sure your camera worked fine for that one year. Now it doesnt work at all? What exactly are you missing? I’d like to have some of the 5N features in my 5 as well (like skin smoothening), but I totally understand the business decision not to give it away. It would undermine 5N sales. Sony is obliged to give us bug fixes, but new features?
With regards to lens compensation, I’m not sure what’s inferred (correction?), but isn’t this done equally well in Camera RAW (lens profiles?). I agree though that if this is something necessary to use newer native E-mount glass on the NEX-3/5 then a FW update should be provided, but then again I’m using a newly released E-mount lens with no problem at all on my 5.
I think what people need to get their heads around is that the LA-EA2 cannot be used on the NEX-3/5 without the FW update and so no update = no adapter sales. So it’s a perfectly understandable decision to release this FW as described.

6 months ago |Well, JonasM, it’s not that I didn’t notice distortion or purple fringing the past year while having a lot of fun with my NEX-5, but I’m not that much into post processing and prefer mostly fine JPEGs when taking pictures. Firmware 05 with Lens Compensation would have made this great product finally perfect – also when filming AVCHD, of course. I would have bought the 50mm early 2012 and a 5N or it’s successor in 2013 or possibly earlier in case I’d really need the 50p SlowMotion.
But seeing how Panasonic is dealing with their GH2 Users, allowing Firmware Hacking, watching this and also implementing some of these functions into their official Firmware makes me a little jealous now, I’ve got to admit.
Updating the firmware with new lens profiles is usually a reminder when new lenses are available, so I didn’t expect Sony at all to miss this chance…
JonasM
6 months ago |Yes, I think that’s a fair argument and perhaps we can expect an additional NEX-3/5 FW release later on to address lens corrections.
Concerning “firmware hacking” it’s obviously a potential support and warranty nightmare for the vendor (I’m from a software sales background)so I wouldn’t personally like such a direction, but I can see why Panasonic and the other M43 guys need to take it there, given their puny sensors

Out of all the Camera manufacturers Sony are pretty damn good at the firmware updates at least they had already improved the menu system and added peaking mode on 5….do you remember how bad it was before that update? Sony listened to the issues and they tried to fix them.
Owning a GH1 + GH2 I can tell you Panasonic do VERY little with updates (usually lens compatibility updates) and if anything they dont “support” the hack they try to block it with every update.
(they have a af100 they need to sell)
25p took well over a year to be given on the GH2 by Panasonic (in a 50i wrapper).Only probably due to its rivals now delivering 50p.
Panasonic are just terrible at after sales care.
Their attitude is for its m43 users to keep buying if you want new features. Example:New X lenses lack extra feature compatability on GH1/GF1. New GX1 Evf incompatible with Gf1. This is money making business.
Camera tech changes fast.Theres no investment in bodies. If you want the latest features get the latest model.
No Lens correction might be due to a limitation of the 5 sensor anyway (the 5n uses a new sensor)
Mike
6 months ago |No Andy ! lens correction has is only a software upgrade and has nothing to do with an other sensor !!
I found fw 3 & fw 4 a very good answer to nex user need !
but with proposing a fw 5, lens correction could have bring more lens sales !!
I never bouht the 16 mm because of distortion and vignetting problem, so this would have been a solution !!
this is a miss opportunity for Sony !!
NEXfive has wright when he said that everyone will not change after one year for a nex 5n, but will probably more easily buy lenses and accessories !!

6 months ago |Its a speculation about lens correction being hardware or software we know 5 does not have all the same processors/sensor as 5n..with supposed micro lenses helping with improved image output.
16mm still has vignetting and distortion issues even on 5n. Better? Yes but still there. This is just the lens weakness. Its just a average lens. The newer E mount lenses are just better made.
Fact is whatever reason the 5N produces better images than the 5.. If you want these you have to buy the 5n…it makes little sense for Sony as a business to give all the same benefits to 3/5 users and sometimes its just not possible (hardware limitations etc)….If they did then why would one buy a 5N?
But hes way wrong about being envious of Panasonics firmware updates theyre worse than Sony among others for decent upgrades via firmware. Only decent updates on firmware were done by outside source via hacking not officially by panasonic. Ones by panasonic are solely to sell more lenses or a little bit faster AF.
Perhaps someone brave enough would hack the Sony firmware

6 months ago |If the update would allow the Nex5 to be used with the EVF, it would be useful for the 5 users. It won’t hurt Sony either.
NEXfive
6 months ago |There’s an extra pin at the EVF that fits into a hole in the NEX-5N that’s not available on a NEX-5, 3 and as I remember also C3, so the EVF is blocked from being attached already. No chance ever for a firmware update here.

6 months ago |The new firmware has been released on the Japanese site at least.
http://www.sony.jp/ichigan/info2/20111215.html
Its not on the official page for the camera yet but I saw this update posted. The file has not been uploaded apparently but the information is there.
Edit: The firmware is now listed on the official software page for the camera but the file is still not available.

This chinese page seems to have the link for Nex c3 and Nex 5 and the link appears to be working. All languages are included in firmwares so you can download it from here and it should work.
