(SR4) HOT!!! Is this the first image of the NEX-7?

I just got the link to the following NEX-7 picture! I have been told this is a preproduction version! One of my sources said the image is original but the final model could have some differences!!! As you see the NEX-7 has a rangefinder style a là Fuji X100 (Click here to see that camera)! As you know the NEX-7 will feature the same A77 24 Megapixel sensor and a 3 million dot OLED EVF (it is not a hybrid viewfinder!). It has the Zeiss 24mm f/1.8 attached (but that is also a prototype). The camera should cost around $1.200.
UPDATE (Mark explanation):
1) 3 Million dot OLED EVF
2) Hot shoe
3) 24mm f/1.8 ZEISS
4) Flash and the Image preview buttons
5) Pop-Up flash
6) Manual Aperture and Shutter Speed controls?
7) ???
???
Stay tuned on SAR. I am still working to get more info about the A77 pictures leaked yesterday. Don’t miss any rumors. Join us on Facebook, Twitter and follow our RSS-feed!
Reminder (SR = Sonyrumor):
SR1=probably fake rumor
SR2=rumor from unknown sources
SR3=50% chance it is correct
SR4=rumor from known sources (60-80% the rumor is correct)
SR5=almost certainly correct!

11 months ago |I was just thinking the design was poor. For example, turn the left hand dial to the right and your thumb will naturally fall on the right hand dial. You’ll need to be quite careful not to accidentally turn them both.
secretservus
11 months ago |Good point, I saw that too. It could be that they haven’t yet decided what to do with the dials yet (or didn’t want to show them in the rendering) OR they are they they pop up when pressed so you can turn them then…

Jinx
11 months ago |Yes, and remember when SAR said it would look like a Konica Minolta DIMAGE?
Agreed, the round buttons are asymmetrical and the “NO” is a misspelling of “ON”.
Open the picture in a new window and zoom in on it. You definitely see artifacts where the OLED EVF was PS’ed in where it meets the camera body. The focal ring on the supposed Zeiss lens doesn’t have the ripples all the way around. Like they tried to remove a marking on it. The Hot Shoe mount isn’t a real hot shoe mount. There’s no opening to slice in the foot.
If the LCD has the same tilt capability as the NEX3/5, then the OLED EVF protrusion actually limits the full angle capability of the LCD. You could easily swing the top up and hit the EVF scratching the housing. Sony wouldn’t have designed that.
The Lens listed specifies a 24mm f/1.8. The planned released Zeiss was first specified as a 24mm f/1.7. It was later changed to be more of a pancake at 24mm f/2.0.
summary, I wouldn’t fall in love with this image.

11 months ago |To Andrea:
Now here comes one that was promised to come up side by side with A77.
But how about the other one-the 500mm f4?
Currently saving for a super telephoto (Founding Currently around ~$7500), considering if I would jump for Canon’s 500mm L II or L I, it’s a “monumental” investment for me….(a body is more like a “accessory” to that investment) In the case if I jump, a Canon body would be dedicated to the use of the lens, yet my other shots would still be with my lovely A-mount collections.
Richard H
11 months ago |It looks a bit fake to me, photoshoped. #6, the dials, completely smooth over, surely if it was pre-production they would have these marked up in some form. But anyway, I definately like the design as it is.
Will
11 months ago |The image is a render, not a photograph. Which raises the question, does Sony create renders in this kind of low-detail? I know they create much more finely-detailed renderings for their promotional materials — but why would they make a low-res render like this?
Carl
11 months ago |For design patent applications, maybe? Even a low quality rendering is beyond the normal line-art that usually graces patents.
Richard H
11 months ago |Think you’ve answered the question then. This is almost exactly what I was hoping for, so it must be fake.
Zaph
11 months ago |“This is almost exactly what I was hoping for, so it must be fake.”
Ha. And agreed.
horst
11 months ago |Well, you do a whole bunch of low res renders during design work, could be one of those.
The ‘NO’ marking and rugged edges suggest it might be some quick test render; question as always is, how close is it to the final product .
Jinx
11 months ago |You’d do you work in high res, and then export it as a lower resolution. However, if you zoom into this image, you’ll notice that there are points of the picture that aren’t the same render consistency. Look at where the EVF connects to the body. The front lens where the friction ridges are for the focus ring. And all around the camera have different resses. This is definitely a non-Sony photoshop picture.

11 months ago |If this render is based on reality, then note that the LCD screen will either have to flip out to the left or flip down (like a DSLR) rather than doing the partial movement that the NEX-3/5 does, since in this render the viewfinder eyepiece would interfere with the movement of a NEX-3/5 style LCD.

Sonys NEx – 7 will def. be a small-DSLR like camera, like the GH2/G3/ NX 20 just because it will compete against them.

The LCD screen doesn’t even have a hinge. I thought the NEX-7 is going to have a better LCD hinge which rotates left and right.
Carl
11 months ago |EVF in the right place, check, hotshoe, check, dual control dials, check. The design itself is fairly attractive too, in a boxy Gundam-esque way, though could do with being a little smaller even accounting for it’s proper handgrip.
Now they just need some compact but high performing lenses to mount on it. Alas, we’ll probably see the NEX-7′s successor before that happens…
andy

11 months ago |Obviously this is a render of a possible design.
The question is whether the render comes from Sony’s design department, and whether it is anywhere near the final design.
It could be some NEX fan’s idea of the ideal NEX-7.
It certainly looks like a practical and useful camera.

When is the 24 lens supposed to be available?
Melotron
11 months ago |It looks more like a rendering than anything else. On the shutter button, the ON is misspelled to “NO”.

what a huge improvment compared to my nex 3!
i dont really care about the megapix improvement in the nex7
i just care about how it handles! i really didnt like the nex 3 cumbersome menu styling. A simple shutter speed, or aperture change is annoying. Rotating a single wheel to change both options just feels unsatisfying.
Its great for consumers but i always feel like i wanted individual dials for em!! and this prototype has it!! Also LOVING how they implemented a view finder! i seriously got sick of looking at the screen to take pictures all the time! the only time it felt fun to use the screen is when im taking really low and high shots where i have to swivel my screen, but just taking normal shots its just … wrong…
LOVE SONY for saving the future of nex!

Steve Jones
11 months ago |That lens looks far too long to be a 24mm native E-Mount design. I’d expect a lens of that focal length to project only about 30-40mm from the flange, and this one I would estimate to be something closer to 80-100mm long. Of course if it’s an adaptation of a design produced for a DSLRs then it is inevitably a lot longer as it will have to incorporate a retrofocal design (necessary when the focal length is less than the lens register). If so, that’s very unfortunate as one of the primary advantages of a camera design with a small register is that moderate wide angle lens designs can be much more compact (albeit it will be necessary to consider issues of light arriving at the edges of the sensor at heavily oblique angles, although that’s more of an issue for FF).
butch
11 months ago |you heard it here first sony will start making concave censors to clean up that wide angle and oblique light angles

11 months ago |Looks ugly to me. Really hate the retro style, dislike the bulky viewfinder I don’t want anyway and especially button 8. The hot shoe looks strange and proprietary. Might like these controls numbered with 6, but they also look too bulky for a real SONY NEX design. I guess the chances are 90% fake, 9% early SONY draft, 0.9% something unpredictable and the remaining rest the forthcoming NEX-7…

Jerry_R
11 months ago |For me with NEX-7 there should be no compromises.
So it should deliver minimum functionality which Panasonic GF3 delivers:
- great EVF (no compromise here)
- hot shoe
- fully tiltable LCD (up down and left right, not just up down)
Of course I assume it will allow focus peaking too.

Don Cox
11 months ago |“6 a) is the dial mode (A;S;M etc)

It works better if one is speeds and the other is apertures, with an A position on both. As in the Leica X1:

I hope this is what the NEX-7 will have.

11 months ago |Now.. It wouldn’t take a genius to understand that Fuji X-100 has a winning design. If they want to copy it, they should improve it. Even better build, even more manual controls.. And please.. Stop it with these huge lenses in front of such cameras. They only mean something with a bunch of interchangable pancake lenses. For all other lens sizes there won’t be any need to drop our DSLRs. Are you listening Sony?

11 months ago |Personally I was afraid they’d get too far away from the compactness and the interface of the NEX-3 and 5, which I’ve gotten very used to, but this just looks perfect. Possibly too perfect to be real, but I hope that we can expect something close to this.
Also, I’d imagine that one of those mystery buttons is an EVF/LCD switch. I can’t imagine both running all the time, considering the battery in this is likely to be of similar size to the one already in use on the NEX-3/5. Perhaps the switch around #8 toggles between the two?

a simple tilt screen would be fine as i dont need the full rotate type

i woudl keep an adapter and Amount lens in my bag for jsut in case i needed a long shot even if no SSS or AF as i would be composing the shot anyhow.

11 months ago |This is *very* obviously a CG rendering, and not a very convincing one if you’re a 3d artist. The design itself is also very plain, this is not Sony design language. I don’t mean that it’s a rangefinder style design, I mean all the surface details and contours. Look at the NEX-3C, the body/surface engineering is much more sophisticated than on this 3d model.
That said, I definitely wouldn’t mind if Sony went in this direction with the NEX-7! They could make a very sexy camera, ala x100 but with way more utility.
PhotoNut
11 months ago |That is not a “picture”! It is a bad computer 3D graphics rendering and it is really ugly.
Also what is this about a Zeiss 24mm f/1.8? I thought it was supposed to be an f/2? Also why is the lens so darn big since it s only covering APS-C and can be non-retrofocus?!
Contrary to what you may have read, it is very possible to build small lenses for a NEX style camera. Afterall, look at the sizes of the legacy lenses you can use on a NEX with adapters, yet these lenses were build for SLR cameras with a much larger flange to film/sensor distance.
You can also use Leica “M” lenses on the NEX with adapters and there is not too much vignetting and quality problems in the corners.
Sony is really derelict in not innovating on matching small lenses for their NEX range of cameras.
Ideally, SONY should have customized the NEX sensors with offset microlenses so that all its wide angle to normal lenses would not be retrofocus.
GH
11 months ago |Even Leica’s wide angles are retrofocus, these days. Besides, sharpness in the corners with wide rangefinder lenses isn’t so much a problem on NEX. It is the color shift that is a big problem, and Leica has to use software fixes to deal with corner color and vignetting, despite their special microlens setup.
I definitely think this is a fake rendering, but, I also think people would flock to such a camera if Sony did build something similar.
