(SR2) Is this the new upcoming 30mm f/2.0 lens for NEX?

Click on the image to enlarge the size
UPDATE: Weeks ago I received the image of the 30mm f/2.0 lens for NEX. I am still not sure if that is just a well made PS job. What’s interesting is that a good source said that there is really a 30mm NEX prototype lens. Could the sender of the picture tell me more about this picture?
Free advertising for Sony. Sony is facing a hard challenge in Thailand. And I know from my sources they are working day and night to rebuild a new factory. 7 months ago |Wake me up when we see an f/1.4 lens for NEX from Sony.
I think Sony does not want to spend money on lens design and production and sees it as a losing proposition as the people it is targeting its cameras to (P&S upgraders) are people who would be just happy with its slow zoom and prime lenses so far.
I also think that Sony is deluded that just because the NEX is very good at high ISOs (especially the NEX-5N) that therefore it does not need fast lenses. Remember that the reason that legacy lenses were so fast is that in those days color film was slow and you really had no choice but have very fast primes if you wanted to shoot in poor lighting conditions.
Personally, I agree more with the philosophy of the legacy cameras and times. Even though we can now shoot good quality, low noise pictures at ISO 800 and higher, I think that fast and very fast lenses are still desirable and should be encouraged for both the ability to avoid flash/shoot 100% ambient but more importantly because of the increased artist possibilities when shooting with large apertures (reduced DoF, lens wide-open rendering style, bokeh etc…)
Really wide aperture lenses + very good high ISO performance can only result in much better options for photographers.

7 months ago |that’s still too big.
and for nex5n the most annoying thing is viewfinder or flash. but not both. one or the other, but not both.
if they had pc flash sync port to fire off my elinchroms i would be a happy duck.

7 months ago |Man, you’re going to carry tons of flash equipment, but a lens that protrudes 4 centimeters out of the body is a no-no ?
This comment section is turning into a bizarro world where anything that’s not a f0.7 lens-in-a-cap with OSS is considered a piece of shit.
matgay
7 months ago |nope – not tons of equipment.
elinchrom flash radio trigger. to two ranger quadras very compact lightstand.
or to two speedflashes its a really small setup, really. i do not like direct flash on camera.
just because it performs in low light doesnt mean flash doesnt help. i just love that it is a great sensor for m-mounts lenses. really HATE wide angle lenses on dslr’s. loving the m-mount lenses, i would invest in good lenses but i wouldnt buy an m9.

7 months ago |i think it is small enough, i don’t prefer to totally give up image quality just to get an exact pancake size.

7 months ago |its not about giving up IQ. a 30mm (pancake) lens would need to add some flange distance (space) in the rear of the lens tube to be able to be a 30mm. the mm of a lens determines its overall (flange + lens length) minimum length.
I would love to see an updated Optical VF with 16, 30, 50mm grid lines and the ability to turn off the lcd.

7 months ago |Picture looks like not very good PS job.
Lens barrel lacks some details like lens name & overall shape seems to be a bit crooked.
Glass is too big for 30/2 and looks like it’s borrowed form another lens.
Compare with Samsung 30/2 or Pana 40/1.7 glass size.
Brendon
7 months ago |Not a pancake but a really useful lens that is sure to ring in the sales for Sony. Hopefully it will give the Panasonic 20mm f1.7 a run for its money.
The Panasonic translates into a 40mm FOV but it has huge distortion which will reduce the effective FOV to something like 42 – 44mm. So these two should easily compete.

7 months ago |It doesn’t look at all like a ‘PS job’, let alone a ‘not very good one’.
Jorginho
7 months ago |No: the endresult is 40 mm. This has been discussed several times.
N.R.
7 months ago |yes, it’s obviously a PS job. not hard to do, take the front from any other nex lens and shorten it. the text “f2.0 30″ is blurry and distorted. definitely a bad PS job.
“custumercopy” just because you can’t tell the difference, doesn’t mean it’s not a bad PS job

7 months ago |You might remember that we saw computer renderings of the NEX-7 before any photos of the real thing appeared.
The present picture may well be an illustration but the final design could be very similar.
A useful lens if the image quality is high. Basically the same as the standard lens for a film SLR.

7 months ago |cz 35mm/2 would be ideal n great for nex
Bill
7 months ago |If true I hope it has stabilization. Sony seems to have abandoned this for all but a few lenses. If no stabilization I won’t be interested.
Kyle Batson
7 months ago |I agree that the image may have been manipulated. However, this is about as small as I would expect lenses to get for the NEX system based on it’s flange-back distance. Remember to keep in mind how thin the NEX bodies are.
It also seems that Sony has been rather consistent with making all of it’s fast primes for Alpha f/1.8 (35/1.8, 50/1.8 for A-mount; 24/1.8, 501/8 for E-mount). If Sony does come out with a new lens in the 30-35mm range, I would expect that it would be an f/1.8 lens as well. Actually, off the top of my head, the only Alpha f/2 lens is the Zeiss 24/2 and that’s a full-frame lens. All of these 1.8 lenses are APS-C lenses.

7 months ago |Wow. Please let this be so (and make it in black). That is exactly the lens I want. As far as the size, I learned a while back mounting lens on the NEX-5 makes them look larger than they truly are because the NEX-5 is so damn tiny. I don’t think the size of this lens is an issue. Looks like they just copied Samsung and built an adapter onto it.

It was funny. I maybe should relink to the post again: http://www.sonyalpharumors.com/sr4-hot-is-that-the-first-image-of-the-nex-7/

http://hktechnews.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/NEX-5N_image_03.jpg
So, either that’s a really good rendering from Sony and they just switched lenses in their CAD system, or the posted image is photoshop’d from it.
Dennis
7 months ago |Nice find. And I vote for “it was photoshop’d from it”. Look at the shadow a little to the lower left of the lens. In the “original” picture that you found, there is a short bright line on the ground. In the modified picture that we’re seeing here, this line had to be extended because the lens barrel was made shorter. You can clearly see where the line was extended because it is slightly displaced. Also, the surrounding shadow area which had to be inserted because it was missing in the original picture looks a lot like it was inexactly copied.
However, even if it is photoshopped, it could still come from Sony, of course. But I also think that the front lens looks different from a 30mm (compare to SAL35f1.8!) and exactly like the front of the SEL1855.

carpandean
7 months ago |I noticed that, too, but if you look closely at the pic, the “0″ after the “2″ and the “66″ don’t look quite right. I’d almost say that the “0″ is copied from the the English units. Would not surprise me at all to find that the “0.25m/0.82ft” of the 18-55mm lens was changed to “0.20m/0.66ft”.
nevilex
7 months ago |THE FONT OF “2″ IN “f2.0″ IS DIFFERENT FROM THE “2″ in “0.20mm”, BAD PS.

7 months ago |Comon OSS… You can do it Sony!
Daemonius
7 months ago |Just f2? .. should be at least f1.8 or f1.4 .. heck even Sigma can do 30mm f1.4 (although not exactly top quality.. ehm).
Eric
7 months ago |Probably trying to compete with the Samsung 30mm f/2 and also keep it as small as possible. While more speed is always welcome, f/2 is plenty fast enough. The difference in f/1.8 to f/2 isn’t enough for me to worry about at all. It wont effect my photos in any way. Plus, thanks to the APS-C sensor a 30mm f/2 will give more DOF control than the m4/3′s Panasonic 20mm f/1.7, and will come really close to matching their 25mm f/1.4.
I imagine the difference in DOF control between the Panasonic 25mm f/1.4 and a Sony 30mm f/2 would only be noticeable in lab tests…and who cares about those?

RnF
7 months ago |I like it. This size isn’t pancake flat, but I don’t really care about that. It’s smaller than the kit lens, and I consider that pretty small already. So I would be very happy with this lens on my Nex5N. Will it have OSS?
Steve Jones
7 months ago |It’s about the right size for a Gaussian 30mm lens. For those complaining it’s not a pancake, then the same design lens on a Samsung NX mount would be 7.5mm shorter due to the longer register.
JesperMP
7 months ago |Carpandean proved that it is a photoshop.
Wether there will be a 30mm f2.0 or not, this “leaked image” is irrelevant.
BlackLegSanji
7 months ago |It is relevant because Andrea deems the source trustworthy enough to give it an SR4.
Just because it’s photoshopped doesn’t mean it’s not an image of concept being circulated at Sony.
Anon
7 months ago |That’s the ticket! I wish it were a 35/2 (actually, a 35/1.7). I would rather be in the 57mm range than 45mm (eq). but they need a fast normal. This might get me to try a 5n + 30/2.
Doroga
7 months ago |“One source confirmed that he heard there was a 30mm f/2.0 lens in the works so this image might be correct.”
I guess SR4 is for idea, not for picture itself.
Even if it is a picture from Sony, it is still a crude PS job made from kit zoom. Not even some 3d prototype rendering.
So final version will look quite different, especially glass.
Eric
7 months ago |The only reason I would rather it be 30mm instead of 35mm’s is because there are already so many fast 35mm manual primes available. I own a Voigtlander 35mm f/2.5 Skopar; and it’s just one of many options. However 28mm f/2 primes are much harder to come by and usually very expensive when you do find one; and 30mm film lenses are almost non existent.

7 months ago |I want a ultra wide angle lens for Sony Nex made by Zeiss,10 or 11mm (35mm equivalent:15 or 16mm) which can attach my Lee filter systeme !!!!!!!
todd
7 months ago |Without OSS it is less attractive. Yes, pancakes are nice. I shot pentax ltd primes for a couple of years. But the Pentax bodies have SR in the body not the lens so a pancake still benefits from SR/OSS. This is one reason I have the 50/1.8 on order – fast and OSS. Frankly the 35 macro should have had OSS as well imho. Not everyone does “macro” with a tripod.
dts
7 months ago |needs OSS for video plus I think it will be the 35/1.8 in order to follow the alpha line version. and there’s already a slow 30/3.5 macro for nex

7 months ago |Yet another wide angle lens
When is Sony going to expand the focal lengths in NEX E mount to include real tele in longer focal lengths? Bridge cameras have it all over NEX in focal length range and thus cover more shooting in a small camera.
Eric
7 months ago |Why not just use the new A-Mount adapter and something like the 70-400mm f/4-5.6? Telephotos are so large using an adapter really isn’t that big of a deal since it doesn’t add all that much more bulk considering most high quality telephotos weigh 3+ pounds.
Don Cox
7 months ago |They have to think how many they might sell.
I wonder what percentage of NEX owners have bought even one additional Sony lens? Sales of a long telephoto might be too small at present to cover the development cost.
If NEXes go on selling well for another couple of years, the market will be bigger. It takes a while to establish a new lens mount.
Remember that mounts like Nikon F or Leica M have been around for decades, so have built up a range of lenses that a new mount cannot hope to equal.
Hopefully Sigma will release some E-mount lenses.
Carl
7 months ago |30mm is not a wide angle lens on APS format. The neutral focal length is the same as the sensor diagonal, which on Sonys would be 28.43mm.
Mistral75

This is not a wide angle lens but a standard lens.

7 months ago |Wish this was a Zeiss lens, and one where they tried to match the rendering of the ZM or ZE/ZF glass instead of ZA. Unfortunately it seems that Sony is keeping Zeiss at arms lens in the NEX platform. Too bad since they have so much rangefinder experience and because their glass is what attracted quite a few of us to sony in the first place. Shame on you Sony.

Seb
7 months ago |Yeah !! Sony only need one good pancake with the next upcoming lenses realeses in 2012, and i’m sure it will increase sellings !!
This lens could be interesting ! F2 30 mm is a standard lens for an every day use !
NEXFF_Dreams
7 months ago |The focal range between 28-35 is great for APS-C. F2 apperture, very good. Hoping that Sony will fit OSS in there!
Also, redo the 50/1.8 to be the same physical size as this lens, with OSS, and ready for NEX FF!
Next NEX lenses should be OSS 85 or 100 fast prime. In the size of the current 50/1.8.
