(SR4) More manual controls for Sony APS-C cameras with video?

The german website slashcam.de reports that a new Sony firmware update will add more manual control for photocameras with video (NEX and new Alphas). The firmware update will be announced in three weeks (at Photokina). The info comes directly from Ichiro Takagi (Deputy President of the Imaging Business Group of Sony).

Thanks for manual control video!!

2 years ago |Its lost in translation? I didn’t noticed word NEX in German website. It is rather possible manual video controls for A55. Some people are crying for them all the time after A55 announcement.
To me it seems reasonable to ask for manual aperture control in AF video mode. It could be nice to control it in range f/1.4 – f/5.6.

There’s a chance that NEX won’t get this firmware upgrade I guess..

2 years ago |not sure what will be added but there are a few things that I would welcome.
*Function button or very least Custom button or ISO button.
*Remove limit from auto ISO 200-1600
*Remove all noise reduction option
*When shooting HDR give normal exposure as RAW
*Better bracketing options
not sure how sony can add a custom or function button. not as simple as changing the shooting tips button, as that button is a soft button and is used as the flexible focus point button, which is used far more often than an ISO button would be used.
one possible solution would have a double button push option for that button, but will never happen. another would be to have the flash button act as another button, but that will never happen either, so I wouldn’t hold your breath on having any of the buttons change their functions or the addition of some sort of direct access button, at least not active all the time, ie; while using Flexible Spot focus.

2 years ago |And where is the firmware update for the pro cam A900 (and 850)??????????????????????????????????????????
mike
2 years ago |900 and 850 are ancient cameras, you will NEVER see a firmware update for them
rob
2 years ago |I’m lovin’ my ancient 850 with CZ 28-70 2.8, and its excellent image quality that has been enhanced by software upgrades in BOTH Sony’s Image Data Converter recent upgrade, and Adobe’s Raw 6.2 (that I use in Photoshop and Lightroom). This gives me way more control than if the upgrade was in the firmware and is actually a better option. I only shoot jpgs when the conditions are favorable and the results not crucial, so a firmware update there is not essential.

acolyte
2 years ago |Nah they’re just too quiet. They’re stable. Sony’s just making a show of stuff. Even Canon hasn’t played out mirrorless yet. They’re just happily out there “Look at those fools go. We’ll step in after we know what they have done and do all the research for us”
Seriously. SLT and mirrorless are not worth that much – yet. If Nikon decides it’s a money maker, then the other producers should keep their guards up.

2 years ago |You know, I really don’t think so. nex was enough to provoke a bunch of press releases about some ILS camera from nikon which is probably months if not years away. The a55 getting top marks at dpr is not good news for canikon, at all. If an A750 comes out now as well they’ll really start kakking themselves.

2 years ago |I guess I’m just biased because I am reading too many attacks for Canikon fanatics about how useless mirrorless/SLT are -.-
So I guess they are worried o_O
The other day when I mentioned SLT to my friend who’s a Canon fanatic, he kept saying ‘What’s so good about it, it looks useless’
Thanks for the info mike

2 years ago |it’s dPreview.
Canon needs to win always. As nearest price-competitor will most likely be 550D – which got 77% score – so the Sony could not get more than 76%.
Sad but true…. dPreview nearly always was biased against Sony for some unknown reason.
I’m really astonished the A55 got gold reward from them – I guess Sony must have threaten them very individually, giving rights to make first A55 review in the world, free vacations somewhere, and 2 cameras for permanent usage (they admitted they do have 2 A55s and 2 A33s).
Bribes – something that always works – lol

2 years ago |videomode: but what exactly can we hope for? we need manual aperature, iso, wb, shutter – and what about higher bitrate (24) and native 24,25p ??? still quite a way to go, but beeing able to use steadyshot for short shots with primelenses is nice :=)

2 years ago |The european version of the A55 already uses 25p in a 50i wrapper. The video we have seen from the A55 shows smooth exposure changes and continuous smooth AF. Manual controls are of interest to advanced videographers only, imo. The vast majority of users will be delighted with the quality of video straight out of the A55 and will never touch manual video control if they introduce it.
So, it seems to me that in review world it makes a lot of sense to introduce manual video control, it’s cheap points in favour from DPR and eos_hd will cream. in the real world it’ll have little impact on actual usage, but better reviews mean more sales, which mean more lenses etc., so I’m happy if they do it.
Francisco
2 years ago |Man, I’m not European and I want the 25p! If the European version can do it, why can’t I enable both FPS versions in the same model? Manual controls are of interest to people who want to control their videos man, not just advanced videographers! Anyways, I hope the firmware update fixes this stuff, and I’ll get an A55 or A560 ASAP!
Awesome SOny!! you guys rock!!

2 years ago |c’mon sony make up your mind!
give us the 24p and manual controls now!!
don’t make me tempted to buy a 550D! -__-’
jt
2 years ago |Seriously, if they would give this 24p and manual controls in the firmware update it would blow the T2i out of the water. From the stills side of things this camera is already way more interesting and feature packed. If I was only concerned with stills I would pick this over the T2i no questions asked. Even without 24p I am considering this over the T2i. I can live with 30p as long as there are manual controls. I much prefer 24p though. Control over shutter, ISO, and aperture- that is a must. I’m impressed that Sony is actually paying attention and responding in a positive way.
Dude
2 years ago |Don’t you care that A33/A55 has fastest AF during video mode and huge viewfinder?
I’m not so sure it has better image quality than the T2i (check the RAWs at imaging resource).
But for video it is a great tool to have.
Why do people give a sh*t about 24p.
Marketing gotcha!
Any average or better video program takes in what comes and gives out what you like it to do.
It’s that simple.
You have to re render anyway, so who cares about the incoming format.
What do you think big TV studios work with?
The get 24p/i 30p/i HD, PAL, SECAM, NTSC stuff all day long.
And these people don’t care at all, because the Software is aware of it.

mirrorless is a big part of the market and it’s still growing, soon it will surpass the classic DSLR.

acolyte
2 years ago |Myst, I just don’t know whether it’s enough to shake the ground under the foot of Canikon’s executives.
My naive logic was, the amount of flamers out there saying that Mirrorless can’t do a thing against Canikon’s current lineup, keeps the executives not caring at it.
I do hope it surpasses, because the more photos I want to take, I do want lighter load on my arms (and lighter load = stability too sometimes o_O)
The question is, when would Canikon care?
I shall not ask when would the flamers stop because that’s characteristic of the forums :p

2 years ago |Announcements are always made right before Photokina, so we’ve got 14 days to go. It’s been quiet because there’s probably little to report. Sony just announced four bodies, that’s a lot. Tweaks to the camera OS is not improbable. A 7-series camera of some kind could be announced, but that’s not even rumor, just speculation at this point.

2 years ago |It’s a personal decision. You have to decide between taking good pictures with a small camera in the near future, and waiting for something better to come along. Technology will always be superseded, but waiting will just mean lost picture-taking opportunities.

2 years ago |A mirrorless a77 or a770 could be shown at Photokina with shipments in November-February. In the mean time the prices and features of the a33/a55 are a real bargain in the market today: body stabilization, sweep panoramics, high speed FPS, quiet shutter (no mirror slap), built-in HDR, etc. It’s hard to see these cameras as anything but best-of-class in their price ranges. If you bought one now and an a77 came out 4 months later you could get most of your money back in resale.

2 years ago |I’m from Germany and just read the article. It says that some of the new cameras (they are called photo/video models in the text) will receive a firmware update in three weeks (whene Photokina starts). Ichiro Takagi didn’t tell which models (NEX or the new A-series cameras) will receive the update; only that the new cameras with APS-C sensor and automatic video mode will get it (this could be the NEX or the new A-series cameras as speculated in the article).

Si esto se pudiera hacer, yo seria un comprador de este visor.

2 years ago |As for the lack of focus lock during video recording…
It’s a big omission from the manufacturer, and it seems that if you can control the exposure is probably simple to implement this function – i mean ON/OFF AF function during one video scene.
It could be connected with main shutter button (or any other) which are useless during video recording.
Why? What for?
Because it happens very often that works in continuous AF becomes, a problem. How it could be?
For example, when an object crosses for a while this line between us to focus point a camera sharpening immediately tries to sharpen, losing correct character/object in the scene.
how does it compare to reality?
we’re shooting a child on a longer focal length and for a moment something cuts us – some staff located closer to the elements (branches, fencing) or someone / something (other person/car) crosses the scene –> focus’s moving back and again to sharpen crossing object and back to the right scene composition – this is really annoying and does not look good.
Another example – we are shooting some bird on a branch. Autotracking mode once focusing on the lovely bird, and once the little leaf literally steals the focus point, and again bird, little branch, bird… – you can go crazy!
Somebody may ask – So why don’t you use MF with that bird?
My answer- have you ever try to catch, a bird with lovely bokeh by MF? With AF locking control it could be really nice and easily to do!
One thing you need is AF lock function!
Another thing is that – the current situation practically requires continuous maintenance of the object in the focus point – it results in a continuous cropping on an item/person, most centrally (although we may change focus point location but it’s still continous operation).
so you can change the location of AF point but the operation is inadequate to the situation when cameraman wants to control the scene.
For example if you focus at the child’s face and wants to place it at the right edge of frame,
all that crazy tracking AF will immediately sharpen the background whenever I’ll try to shot like that.
Changing AF location is too time-consuming and inefficient in this sense.
If there will be control over AF lock I could use it by the one click and easily unlock it the same way when I decide that I want to make, a smooth transition with focus/scene layers.
Such a simple thing but very necessary
Possibility of those transitions in MF mode has nothing to do with the described functionality because it could be changed (AF/MF) before recording starts and permanently disables AF operation – and here I discuss the situation in which I wanna enjoy its benefits but under simple control (on/off AF) in one scene (without cuts).
If they are here some Sony employees, and certainly know where to give such suggestions to be taken seriously or at least have a chance, because normal user does not have access to such (internal) information channels, please help to realize this idea of AF LOCK FUNCTION (maybe with next firmware update).
And what simple user can do?
Believe that anything you can imagine, you can make real – it’s from sony.com
Here some user opinion from dpreview forum:
—————
I absolutely agree – there are TOO MANY cases when AF lock would be EXTREMELY useful!
Sony promotes A33/A55 video mode with continuous AF as a KEY feature. A breakthrough that distinguishes them form ANY OTHER dSLR on the market.
I personally bought A33 just for that. After two month of using it, I practically stopped using AF completely – due to the exact problems vista77 described. In other words, the KEY feature turned out to be quite useless.
If Sony cares about the feedback from customers, I agree this AF lock feature should be #1 in the firmware upgrade. I find it much more important than Aperture control in video mode (auto) – this one should be #2 on the list.
I suggest to list the ideas how this AF lock might be implemented:
1) DOF preview button – toggles between AF/MF
2) AE lock button is programmable via main menu – either it can be set to AE lock, or to AF lock (e.g. my compact Panasonic LX3 has just that)
3) Combination
a) quick pressing & releasing of button A toggles between AF/MF mode
b) while in MF mode, pressing button B activates AF mode, releasing button B returns back to MF mode. It would be very useful to achieve focus-shifting effects.
Please keep the AF lock ideas coming, as well as ideas how let Sony know about them.
—————
So please Sony – Just make.believe your users!
