(SR4) New entry level Alpha (DSLR) to be announced in June-July

According to many different sources Sony is not only ready to launch the new NEX mirrorless cameras. Two new entry level Alphas will be announced in June-July. One model should be the A290 the other model the A390(?). According to one source the cameras will not use the enw EXmor HD sensor.
The Sony Alpha A230 and the Sony Alpha A380
have been announced in May 2009.

i hope the new design will be much better.

May 2, 2010 |Uhhh, yeah right. Because Sony needs more ‘entry level’ cameras added to their arsenal. You can’t sell a 2K$ Carl Zeiss lens to the purchaser of a Alpha 230 body. Just doesn’t happen.
Semi-Pro and Pro models, boys, where are they???????

May 2, 2010 |@Sol A700 will get an upgrade soon
and I’m sure sony will release a A900 successor with Video/live view/etc by the end the end of the year or Spring 2011
And i doubt that they will release new entry level DSLR without video

May 2, 2010 |I think, those “entry” models, are one of the models we saw at PMA ’10 (A7xx and there was another, entry model, can you remember?)

And that model HAS AVCHD Video capabilities. ^^

Hey smarty…. it’s not a question of do we need more entry levels, it’s the way of a company to refreshen the line-up…. re-boost publicity!!……so yes they are needed. And instead off making fun off entry level users…. consider a expensive body with cheap glass…that’s far more stupid than a a230 with a CZ lens!

May 2, 2010 |Why Sony? There is no need for so many entry level cameras, especially when the Pentax X(one camera) out did them all. Quality > Quantity.

May 2, 2010 |I honestly think that if they release new models without HD video and the new Exmor sensor, it is a very dumb move. I just hope Sony announces new Gseries and CZ lenses too. More lenses should be added to the lineup.

May 2, 2010 |I think there are more different customers out there than some of you think.
Have a look at the handycam portfolio. Sony offers the most different models of all manufacturers and are very successfull. One camera for evryone.
I’m pretty sure that people who already own video cameras or buy the nex or DSLR cameras with HDCMOS sensor are not disturbed by some models that don’t offer video.
Please don’t think that the next camera must be the camera that fulfills your needs, it may be the perfect camera for other people. The camera after the next one could be yours.
Im pretty sure that after Sony has build up it’s portfolio for DSLR’s and NEX cameras new releases will be perceived much more relaxed because the choice for everyone is there.

May 3, 2010 |I cannot understand the need to replace entry level cameras so often. Where is the replacement for the A700, or even the rumoured 14MP FF A800? If Sony were not going to offer either of these in the six months following the discontinuing of the A700, why remove the A700 from the line up. Please can we have at least one camera released that fills the huge gap between the £515 Sony A550 and the £1530 Sony A850 (based on Amazon prices). I am looking to move to digital from a Minolta Dynax 7 and there is no direct digital replacement in Sony’s line up.

May 3, 2010 |Hey, I got no problem with more ‘entry-level’ cameras being updated to Sony’s line-up. More power to ‘em. But seriously, how many ‘entry-level’ cameras has Sony added or replaced since the A700-level body was released? I think the number is around 6 or 8!!
And we still haven’t seen Sony’s first actual ‘Pro Model’. Sure, the A900 is a beautiful ‘Flagship’ camera, and does a great job until the Pro models get here. But, when DO they get here????

May 3, 2010 |false rumor!!! the upcoming Sony mirrorless cams will make the A2xx & A3xx lines unnecessary similar to what happened to the Oly E4xx & E5XX . Especially that we now have A4xx and A5xx and possibly upcoming replacement of A700, so you have many Sony APS-C choices without new A2xx & A3xx.

Do yourself a favour, don’t wait to replace your Minolta Dynax 7 with a Sony A730(?) buy a used Sony A700 now instead, you’ll save a fortune that is better spent on good glass

I did consider the A700 before it was discontinued, but with the mix of lenses I have, I would have had to buy an extra wide angle lens to use instead of my existing 17-35mm lens which would effectively become a 27-53mm lens. For the cost of a half decent 12-24mm or 10-20mm lens plus an A700, I could have purchased an A850 but lose the benefit of a pop up fill in flash. Falling neatly between two stools has meant that I have waited to see if Sony would plug the gap with a lower resolution FF camera.
Moving to APS-C would also mean that my existing 28-70mm f2.8 and 70-200mm f2.8 lenses would have become 42-105mm and 105-300mm. I can except the crop factor at the telephoto end, but a standard zoom that starts at 42mm would be a bit restrictive. I would be forever changing lenses. Going for the A700 would probably mean having to buy two zoom lenses below the 70mm length.
