(SR4) New NEX-7 successor coming in first half 2013!

We all loved the NEX-7 but the time is close that it will find his way to a well deserved retirement. It stills ell well in US (see Amazon ranking) but according to our sources the NEX-7 is due for replacement the first half of the next year. We are still working on the rumored specs list and sources are welcome to send me the bits of info they have about the camera so that I can be as accurate as possible the day I will post them on SAR.
All I can say for now is that every aspect from EVF, sensor up to the AF will be changed (ok that was to be expected). I haven’t heard of any revolutionary new feature yet (like foveon sensor or whatever you imagine). While final prototypes are already out for testing you may share your wish list for the new NEX-7 successor while I am working on the real specs info. Contact me anonymously (with fake mail address) at sonyalpharumors@gmail.com. Or just drop a message on the contact form you see placed here on the right sidebar. Thanks!
The $100 NEX-7 rebates on Amazon:
Meantime there is a $100 rebate action on the NEX-7 (Click here). You save another additional $100 when purchasing it along the 55-210mm lens and another 2% on the overall total price. That deal is part of the many Golg Box deals launched three days ago (Click here to see them all / there will be a DSC-H90 deal starting soon).
There are also some good deals on eBay:
In USA: You can get them even cheaper at Bigvalue ($1066 click here to check out the auction). And private sellers are also selling some new bodies for less than $1000 at Bucsmom and Kirmell.
In Europe: Cheapest price at Microprice Italy (topseller store). It’s about 60-70 Euro less than in other stores.
Full list of eBay NEX7 auction here at Slidoo.

SR3=50% chance it is correct
SR4=rumor from known sources
SR5=almost certainly correct!

7 months ago |1. The nex 7 sensor is superb, but I wish for no problems with wide angle lenses in the successor.
2. Weather sealed body.
3. IBIS if possible.
4. 1/250 flash sync.
I think these can be in the realm of possibilities

7 months ago |I fully agree with Steveen
I would like to add my three small wishes:
1) 1/8000 shutter speed
2) 50 ISO (could be as ‘extended’), real ISO 100
3) Less noise at RAW pictures. It means I wished to reduce noise with better sensor properties as contrast to new superb algorithm to in-camera denoise of JPEGs.

Jesse Baynard
7 months ago |1. Global shutter for unlimited flash sync (by the shutter mechanism anyways).
2. Weather sealed body (with some weather sealed 2.8 zooms to match).
3. WiFi connectivity (borrowed from the 5N/6).
4. Improved autofocus is always welcomed… low light accuracy, speed, tracking, number of select-able points, etc.
5. Big stretch… Full Frame, but that should really be a NEX-9… we need a top end APS-C… unless they can keep the price close.
6. Finally small things that make the world of difference, powerful processor, excess buffer size, etc.
Rooru S.
7 months ago |Wishlist. Keep many things from the NEX-7 (form factor as an example) but include this
1. weathersealed
2. physical mode dial while retaining Tri-navi
3. 20MP with better HIGH ISO handling (and off-set microlenses for better performance when using wide angle lenses)
4. the new standard hotshoe is coming for sure, but please, keep the AUDIO-IN jack. Don’t do the same mistake done with the NEX-6.
NOTE: I’m sure IBIS won’t be coming in any NEX ever since a lot of lenses has OSS already so I don’t expect IBIS on NEX-7 replacement. BUT hope they address any single issue found on the NEX-7 and make the best NEX ever. (Even better than NEX-6)
spaceman
7 months ago |Sony…I would like the following improvements for the NEX-7P:
1) Stick with 24Mpix (I LOVE the higher resolution)
2) New AF system, OS-PDAF finally giving DSLT’s run for their money using the new upcoming G-lens zoom and the Zeiss 24/1.8
3) Better lowlight performance, at least 20% less noise would be very nice
4) IBIS – although it will probably not make it before the lauch of the FF NEX-9
5) Weather sealed along with a sealed G-lens standard zoom, and the unannounced G-lens tele zoom
6) Phys. mode dial with custom modes in addition to the Tri-navi system
7) Change the menu system and make it more A99/77/RX like
8) GPS
9) Wifi
10) higher-end flash capabilities
11) Clean and uncompressed video-out option via HDMI
Beast of a cameras, the best APS-C sensored in history?

7 months ago |The only thing that would urge me into upgrading my NEX-7 is a full frame NEX. But that will have to come with a few full frame E-mount lenses as well. Other than that there’s not that much that can be improved in terms of image quality of the NEXes.
And perhaps a more promising on sensor PDAF than NEX-5R/6. But I’m sure that’ll come with time!
Rick
7 months ago |I bet its just a refresh with the smart hotshoe from the A99 to maintain “flagship Nex” status, on-sensor AF and not much more to align it with the 6 & 5F. Nex 7F or something like that. After seeing the new hotshoe on the A99 and the VG’s the writing was on the wall – coming soon to the Nex7.
MisterMe
7 months ago |You’re probably right that it will mostly be a refresh to incorporate the 5R/6 technology. But at least they have to update the sensor to include PDAF, so maybe that will bring additional image quality improvements.
But I’m primarily wishing for another significant step forward in focus speed and focus tracking…

2 – weather sealed body and surely few mm bigger body will not be problem at all.
3 – third dial on the top of the body (probably for forefinger on the front next to rel button) to alter the existing 3-navi more better to use with EVF;finally great 4-navi on new NEX-7 with 3 dials for A, S,exp comp on the top of the body and 1 dial on the back of the body.
4 – one new button on the back of the body next to existing Soft key B for play mode. Existing play mode button next to flash arise button for direct WB corrections and when trogled, 2 top dials for selecting A-B and G-M and 1 top dial (probably this new for forefinger)for selecting metering mode.
Mattias
7 months ago |I don’t see myself buying this successor, the NEX-7 should be sufficient for at least 1-2 years more. I guess the thing that could sway me is if AF is radically improved, the main thing that I am less than satisfied with on the NEX-7. But otherwise I would rather wait for a full-frame mirrorless alternative, preferrably from Sony.

-SD UHS compatibility for faster writing
-bigger buffer size
-higher res EVF
-WiFi Tether support and an app for iOS,AD

7 months ago |Please come with a high quality zoom (G zoom may be) as kit lens. The lens right now for nex system are just not good enough. Only a 50 1.8, 24 1.8 and a sigma 30 2.8 are good at the moment. Unknown about IQ of 35 1.8 and 10-18 at the moment. This system is crying for good quality lens. Manual focus with legacy lens is not a solution.

7 months ago |In addition to those already listed above, here are my wish list:
1. Touch screen operation like the NEX-5N
2. EVF that can be articulated to 90 degrees (like the external EVF for the NEX-5N & NEX-5R)
3. Improved video (at least equal in performance of the GH2 or better yet, the GH3!)
4. IR port in the rear of the camera (in addition to the IR port in front of the camera)
5. In-camera RAW files processing

7 months ago |NEX-7R wishlist?
Weather Sealed Body
Wi-Fi Connectivity w/ Touchscreen (5R)
Phase Detection AF (5R/6)
The new Standard+ Hotshoe (6)
I also wouldn’t mind seeing them pull the mpx number down from 24 to 20. It would still have great crop-ability, but not as many noise issues at higher ISO settings.
I think all of those (minus maybe the mpx one) are very possible and even likely. They would also make a great camera even better, and be worthy of being called an “upgrade”.
Upgrades that’d be awesome but seem unlikely:
Physical Mode Dial in addition to Tri-Nav (seems redundant, but I like options)
In-Body Image Stabilization (Not sure any NEX will get IBIS)
Global Shutter (still too early, maybe next time)
Full Frame Sensor (Yeah, right…and toss the RX1 into the trash?)

7 months ago |I think it would be a mistake to lower the mpx count. At base ISO the nex7 is comparable to the previous generation hi-res full frame sensors (barring DOF) – especially dynamic range and colour depth. Better micro lens engineering for WA lenses would be great though.
Most importantly I really don’t want Sony to do what it usually does and abandon its good ideas as much as its bad ones. Don’t get rid of tri-navi controls!!! Please! I find that I can control all that I need to without removing my eye from the VF. In addition:
More enthusiast-centric menus
Higher dynamic range EVF (to combat blocked up shadows)
Better high ISO (not including aggressive noise reduction)
On sensor PDAF
Retina touch screen like the the Phase One IQ series
No AA filter! (the pixel density is more than enough to defeat most potential moire)
Weather sealing
The ability to choose a metering system that allows *exposure to the right* when shooting raw (this goes for all digital cameras!) – in addition to the status quo metering system inexplicably based on the light response of film…
Lenses, Lenses, #%*^#%€ Lenses!
Oh, and Lenses
In summary: improve what you can in line with sensible pricing (not a concept embraced by many enthusiast wish lists including the one above) and please don’t change what you got right – form factor, metal build, utilitarian-modern-chic styling, large print IQ, external controls (accept to add).
Steve
7 months ago |Either a much light AA filter or no AA filter at all. Right now Sony seems to have a heavier AA filter than most which limits the 24mp potential at low ISO.

7 months ago |My wishlist, in order of desire:
- Weather sealed
- New high quality standard G zoom (16-50mm, f/2.8-4 OSS *weather sealed*) to go with it
- New high quality telephoto G zoom (50-150mm, f/2.8-4 OSS *weather sealed*) to go with it
- Leave Tri-Navi system as-is (don’t need a physical mode dial like NEX-6; current method of pressing centre button is good)
- Allow camera to sleep while EVF eye sensor is active! Just have a customizable timeout for no activity on the camera. I hate, hate, hate this problem.
- Phase Detect AF on sensor (that works) and/or better Contrast Detect AF (like E-M5)
- Better/more realistic black levels in EVF
- Storeable user settings presets (3 would be nice)
- Allow live histogram and electronic level at the same time
- GPS
- Wifi
- Fix video button so you don’t have to deactivate it, but it doesn’t get pressed accidentally
- Allow navigation between photos in playback mode *while zoomed*, like on every other camera
- Store videos and photos in the same folder!! (the current method is simply ridiculous)
- Menu system from the alpha/RX series
- The new hybrid hotshoe
I think that just about covers it

7 months ago |Agreed. if no more high quality lens by the end of next summer then I am done with the NEX system and switch to Fuji instead. Fuji’s lens road map is clear. Her 35 1.4 & 18-55 2.8-4 are good quality and reasonably priced. but i am just not a fan of retro style. This NEX system is becoming a joke despite I really like the feature rich camera body.

7 months ago |I’m really interested in Sony’s plan for quality lenses for both the E and A-Mount.
I own the a850 and all but one of the full-frame Zeiss and a bag full of Minolta and Sony G lenses and a NEX-7 and A-mount adapter.
I also see this spring as my limit waiting for Sony to start shipping or at least announcing new and replacement optics.
I’m not sure if I’d move to Canon or Nikon full-frame as I see both as flawed and really prefer Sony’s EVF and related technologies over the others.
Maybe this spring Sony will announce a new Mirrorless A-mount full-frame at the same time as the rumored Zeiss 50mm
That could make me very happy

Sony might do something more though:

- 4G data modem (internet beyond WiFi)

- faster overall UI operation
- revamped menu system
- the ability to shoot photographs by clicking the shutter button when in video mode
- more consistency in the interface with regards to what happens when you turn dials left/right/clockwise.
- faster autofocus
- better low-light quality
- universal flash mount

7 months ago |It will more than likely have the new hybrid focusing system of the NEX6. Improvements are great, I’m just hoping the physical form factor stays the same so I can use it in my Nauticam underwater housing that costs twice as much as the camera. I’d spring for an upgrade and keep the NEX7 as a spare back-up. If it means buying a new housing, I’ll stick with the NEX7 and buy an extra body which will be considerably cheaper when the new model comes out.
What Sony needs more are LENS!!!! Especially medium and long macro lens for us underwater macro shooters. The newly announced Zeiss 50mm macro is welcome news and I wish it were available yesterday
But a 100mm macro would be what us UW super-macro shooters are waiting for. SONY: A 100mm macro lens and a same form factor improved body..pretty please.
Cyberman
5 months ago |Ppl..most of us don’t have inexhaustible finances,so why not emphasize improvements on the existing NEX 7(lots of it) and not another expensive replacement. I.e. thru firmware-> DRO-HDR, bracketing UI should not interfere with Remote control functionalities and overheating minimization plus hybrid PDAF & CDAF. Sharper, weather-sealed E-mount macro lenses, prime and zooms. Sony-made adapters for legacy lenses ensuring perfect compatibilities & warranties and not a Precaution on User Guide.
Marsh
5 months ago |All the above would be great! But, PLEASE keep the same physical form factor and controls. I shoot the NEX7 in a Nauticam NA-NEX7 underwater housing. It and all the accessories are so much more expensive (3X) than the camera. Be nice to just change bodies and not have to reinvest in all new UW hardware. If that’s the case, I’ll just keep the 24MP NEX7 and not upgrade. The above wish list features don’t apply as much to underwater shooting other than faster shutter speed for black backgrounds and sunspot shots, along with more accurate focus using the newer hybrid system the NEX6 has. But, manual focusing on the upcoming Zeiss 50mm macro, the lens all of us macro shooters are anxiously waiting for, means even the current contrast focus on the NEX7 will still do nicely. Certainly not worth dropping another $2-3G on a new housing and ports, that is, should Nauticam provide one. However, knowing them, they’ll have one available in no time, especially as the Sony E-mount lens selection improvement makes the system a more complete UW rig. Lack of lens is what’s been holding the system back from more UW and general adoption. The NA-NEX7 is a great and compact housing.

4 months ago |Wish list for a NEX 7 replacement:
1. Improved lowlight performance (cleaner sensor, better shadows, generally better tonal range etc)
2. Quiet shutter. Well, if Canon can do it with the 5D III, then surely…?? Much more important to me than 8000th sec shutter.
3. Solid, faster AF, with no “if-I’m-having-trouble-with-focussing-on-what-the-photographer-wants-I’ll-just-go-full-frame-AF-and-focus-on-something-behind”. Heck! Maybe even a AF Hunting warning indicator with manual override
3. Keep the Trinavi system, but replace the Micky Mouse Menu System…and add easy-to-access custom prefs
4. Second memory slot of some kind
5. Would it be too much to ask for some sort of weather-proofing?
6. Good, serious senses, to make me think about committing to a system with a future…
7. Conventional hotshoe
9. Cable release
10. ASA range down to 25
11. Did I mention lenses?

4 months ago |I just wish my NEX 7 had a slot for cable remote shutter and/or software for long exposure shots. I cannot believe that Sony produced this advanced enthusiast camera and failed to include this feature!
