Image on top shows the current NEX-F3
According to one source the next new NEX camera will be the NEX-F3 replacement. And it will be named NEX-3N. There is no info yet about the specs. 5 months ago |Another one?? How many of these do we need? I’m struggling to understand the product difference between a 3N and a 5R.. We’ve got 7M, 6, 5R, F3 already..

5 months ago |Maybe in order to streamline they are cancelling the production of the 16MP sensors without the phase-detect pixels. Thus forcing an update of F3.

5 months ago |It would also seem to me that the Wifi and PDAF functionalities that made their debut in the middle-tier NEXs would fit very well into the low-end, social-shooting-focused NEX. So it does make sense to consolidate their fabs and chipsets (Wifi).
To that end, I don’t think it makes sense to put a hotshoe on the 3-series. In fact, I didn’t even think it made much sense to add EVF compatibility to the 3-series’ Smart Accessory jack, which DID happen… but on second thought, that could have very well been the same chipset consolidation we’re talking about, not to mention giving Sony another chance to earn a few hundred dollars for a high-margin accessory.

5 months ago |To me all that really matters is image quality. The low end nex-3 line probably does not have a hot shoe because if it did It would hurt sales for the Higher end models. The image quality is not that much different from the 3 series up to the seven if you use the right lens.I never ever waste my time with e-mount lenses. I use my Sony CZ lenses on my Nex-f3 and and a few older various mf primes and some af minoltas etc… Its just a marketing gimmick, yes you get better build and more features with higher end models but I baby my gear. I think sony really just needs 2 or 3 nex cameras. The 5,6 & 7 all with hot shoes.

WE NEED NEX LENSES SONY! NOT MORE CAMERAS!

Is there any chance Sony will announce a tele longer than 200mm in this next round? Just wondering as it seems to be an obvious gap in the E mount world and nothing is ever mentioned about it . . .

Can we hope to see the rumored Zeiss 50mm and/or the rumored replacement 70-400 or 70-200/f2.8?
It was July 2010 the last time Sony announced a full frame lens with a FL less than 300mm
SAL-24F20Z 2010
SAL-85F28 2010
Sony has to its credit released a walloping number of four APC-S DT lenses and eleven NEX lens since 2010.
It should be apparent to all that A-Mount shooters cannot rely on third-party manufactures like Sigma to make A-Mount lenses as they had done in the past because sales of the A-Mount are so low they can’t justify the productions runs any longer. NEX on the other hand is getting solid third-party support because the camera is a big success.
I had hoped the a99 would boost the popularity of the Mount enough to convince manufactures to make optics and other accessories like they do for Canon and Nikon but as of yet…………???

5 months ago |The irony to me is that the compatibility with A-mount lenses using a PDAF adapter is what sets the NEX apart from the rest. Let the A-mount wither, and you lose a solid benefit. I had similar hopes for the A99 and Started vesting in that. I’m starting to second guess my decision.

5 months ago |Do you guys need the number of a local ‘lifeline’? I, too am discouraged that Sony isn’t doing more with FF. We really cannot complain as much about NEX. I do use my LA-EA1 and LA-EA2 to use plastic-fantastic and other Alpha lenses.
NEX has not been a disappointment for me. I haven’t bought the a99 yet, though.
Sky_walker
5 months ago |Yea, well, Sony released rather poor camera for rather uncompetitive price, and instead of building dream-sports shooter camera, breaking records and being best-of-the-best in what it does they released thing that’s floating in 5D MK III region, only with poorer IQ.
Then they cancelled tiny mirrorless A-mount, A1x, no-AA A-mount camera and everything that could bring A-mount back into glory.
Well… Sony seems to be a bit clueless in it’s own plans, playing with countless NEXes juggling.

5 months ago |How about revealing the new “mirrorles” strategy?
Something like, main focus on NEX models, upcoming FF NEX. New Sony and Zeiss lenses for NEX. May be even firs lens for FF NEX…
End of life for SLT cameras, no replacement for 77 and 99. 38 and 58 are last SLT cameras. All A-mount lenses can be used on future mirrorles cameras via adapter.

5 months ago |Oh boy! Another adapter! I can’t wait to adapt my native lenses, and adapt my native flash to a camera with a completely different battery and memory card that gets no third party support for radio slaves, flash, or lenses.
This is gonna be great!
andrew
5 months ago |Why do people assume that moving from slt to mirrorless means the end of native a-mount bodies!? I’ve used both systems – it’s nice having the option to use an a-mount adapter, but the handling is terrible with heavier glass and you take a massive hit in low light without ibis. It’s no substitute for the real thing so I’m sure we’ll see mirrorless native a-mount bodies at some point.
It would be interesting to see how many people who currently own a-mount bodies would move to nex if sony decided to stop making amount bodies (as opposed to switching brand).

I mainly take nature photos. I had at same time A77 and Nex-7 +LA-adapters but soon realized that Nex not my route, especially when using long lenses. Sold Nex equipments and bough A99 instead. Now have two A99′s and I am again very happy! Waiting now new 70-200 G II SSM and Zeiss 50/1.4 SSM…

5 months ago |I’d like to share your hope for native mirrorless A-mount bodies. One think that worries, Sony need to develop 2 lines of lenses already. With FF NEX there will be a demand for FF-E-mount set.
This is a huge R&D load for lens department. So, I’d expect them to prioritize. And in situation where they have much more success on compact market, obviously they choose to spend all resources on E-mount.
Actually one more interesting move from Sony would be selling A-mount completely.

5 months ago |What possible could be the point of a NEX-3n? How on earth would it differ from the existing 3 model without being a 5 series? Did the F3 lose momentum and re-badging it as a 3N make better marketing sense? I guess we will find out soon enough.
John Maverick
5 months ago |They’ve probably rolled a few manufacturing improvements and efficiencies together, which can be used in the new product. Eg. Not much changes for the customer, but at least they can then either lower the price, or alternatively make more profit.
Wayne Summers
5 months ago |I am guessing it may have wifi and that pdaf sensor thingy but I really hope they just start putting a regular hotshoe on all the nex cameras. I really like my nex-f3 but would love it even more if it had a hotshoe.

What’s with the surprise?

5 months ago |Exactly. In fact, a yearly refresh of general-consumer-targeted product is expected for most consumer electronics. The NEX 3-series is exactly that. I might be able to see the complaint if we’re talking about the NEX-7 or NEX-9, i.e. something with more serious/professional intentions… but even then we’re talking about a new product class (MILCs) that is still in a great deal of flux (that is, a very different situation from that of dSLRs).
I think all this is just the recent re-application of the old m4 3 tr*ll that used to go “the NEX has more bodies than lenses”… which was completely intellectually dishonest, as the NEX only ever had 2-to-4 bodies ever in production at a given time. Taken to fairness, the idea to include replaced, out-of-production bodies in a product count can be applied to Canikon and/or m4 3 as well. But tr*lls are rarely about being fair.
Neo NiGHTS ®
5 months ago |I’m no m4/3 troll (in fact, I’m a ‘soon-to-be-NEX-user’) but I’d said those things (about Nex system having more bodies than lenses) myself as well.
Of course if you count discontinnued bodies that comment may seem a bit unfair but, let’s face it: Nex’s lens production was going very slow and frustrating. To the point even Sony recognized that and changed their priorities about the Nex system (I’m using the info I’ve seen here on SAR).
Also those comments have some exageration due current frustration. No one should take those too seriously.
Unless, of course, someone not only keeps saying that but always bash Sony/Nex and never see anything good about it/them.
(which is not my case)

5 months ago |Bonkers!
I know that we used to get low end product refreshes every 6-10 months, but I thought that this idiocy would stop after the 2008 financial crisis.
It cannot have escaped Sony that the Nex F3 (out in August 2012 in the UK) was being sold at 30% reduction in about a month. And that two major UK retailers (Jacobs and Jessops) have gone out of business in 2012.
So yes, it is hugely surprising that Sony (and others):
- are persisting with 1990s marketing (ie flood the market with iterative, aimless models)
- are continuing to commodify and devalue their products
- are training customers to expect/demand unsustainable prices
- are driving retailers out of business
- are driving themselves out of business by pretending that market-share = profits (hi there Sony and Panasonic; how’s your stock doing today?)
The surprise is not that we have another landfill candidate ready to launch, but that no one is learning any lessons.

Can’t say I agree with that, but it’s somewhat expected.

5 months ago |I so not understand the strategy of Sony on 3 series.
I think even Somy does not know what strategy to adopt when you see::
A33 (Flip screen) – A35 (no filp screen) – A37 (back to Flip screen but reduced other features)
Nex3 – NexC3 (compact) – Nex3F (Bulky with falsh) – Nex3N (re-compact???)
Kiril
5 months ago |This is simple they make this which sells. If built-in flash is hot you get oversized body.
The thing that is constant is innovation and Sony have proven they can deliver year on year in this compartment.
Lower class cameras lead in breakthrough innovation and trail in incremental features.
Bread and butter models like the 5 lines are toughest for Sony. In the alpha line they opted for weird strategies of having two quite different models. Good to see they now reconciled with a57.
I suppose 3n has to deliver the app support & Wifi ASAP to the cheap line. NEX-7N or whatever needs to deliver the same in the upper class. This si critical for Sony as they try to diversify the revenue sources in the NEX line. Camera bodies probably sell ok but lenses are may be not so hot as most people probably just shoot the kit lenses. So app support that can keep cash flowing in is important.
As consumer I like the app support too. Perhaps this is going to end the yearly hardware refresh. Think PS3 – it has been improved year on year. Importantly though PS3 from the time it launched can still run the newest of games.

5 months ago |I guess a NEX-3N will have new features as:
- 24 MP
- app support
and that’s it.

5 months ago |ok new nex=3 this is nice but not so much unexpected.
What are the lenses? Any NEX lenses
any news on 85.1,8? what would be the high quality normal zoom? is it f2.8 or f4? Is ti only about optical quality and no fixed aperture?
Is there rumor about the pancake?
Is there new lens roadmap coming for NEX?
Panasonic and Olympus had fruitful 2012 in the m43 land. There was little redundancy between them, seems like well aligned strategy. What is Sony’s response? Can we hope for full frame Nikon E1 (with E-mount)?
DtEW
5 months ago |We got the SEL1018 and SEL35F18 in the 2012/2013 cusp. We got the SEL55210 and SEL50F18 at the 2011/2012 cusp. The middle of 2012 gave us the Sigma 30, Sigma 19, SEL18200LE, and SEL1650. We’ve got 3 primes announced from Zeiss, a rumored 18-85mm zoom (don’t know if this is the “mid-magnification zoom” or the “high-performance zoom”), a rumored 85mm f/1.8 (“middle telephoto”?) and a “snap pancake” (?).
So I do find it funny that people would keep asking about lenses.

5 months ago |I actually like the NEX line even though I don’t have a NEX camera because of the big sensor in a small body. The problem is that there aren’t many lenses to choose from.
I would like to see some f1.4 prime lenses (with autofocus of course).
