(SR4) Nikon to launch a pro mirrorless system (with Sony sensors?)

According to latest rumors (Mirrorlessrumors.com) Nikon will use Sony manufactored sensors to launch a complete new and pro mirrorless system. There is a fair chance Nikon mirrorless camera will feature the same 24 Mega-pixel sensor that will be used inside the upcoming Sony NEX-7. The bad news is that Nikon will present their camera in April and the Sony NEX-7 should be announced a few months after
A part from the Sensor Sony and Nikon will NOT share the same E-mount. Nikon will go their own way. To bad, I would have loved to see a partnership on the same system like the one between Panasonic and Olympus.

Sony is getting cash from products sold by their “rival”
If We knew whole inter-company agreements we would see why nobody really comes with a real innovative product.
Sky_walker
2 years ago |Sony does take cash from it, yes, but it’s Sony Semiconductors – it doesn’t make Sony Imaging (camera division) look any better than selling 1 000 000 earphones does.

2 years ago |I dont think so, if sony do in such way, sony will lose the sensor business as Nikon cant push their sales. since sony want to supply the sensor to nikon, their selling prie expected similar.
the early rumor spell out SR4 about A77 selling at 60D price. i have doubt on it! since A66 will be release on the same time!

2 years ago |I’d been hoping someone like Nikon or Pentax would jump on board sooner rather than later. I’d honestly been more interested in a more serious attempt at a camera from either of those than something from Sony, as it’s in the finer details, that photographers appreciate, where Sony lag behind – So I think I’d happily start a new mirrorless system with Nikon (or Pentax, who have suggested a few times one is in the works).
Eric
2 years ago |Same here. Aside from Samsung, I’ve owned every DSLR/mirrorless brand there is at one point in time or another, and my two favorites were definitely Pentax and Nikon. Perhaps it’s just me, but both of those companies seem to know how to cut right through the fluff and build a camera for actual photographers. Sony is going to have to come out with something really really special in order for me to come back to the NEX system if Pentax and Nikon are competing in the high end mirrorless market. Let’s just say Sony better get to work on their Zeiss E-mount lenses ASAP.
Daniel
2 years ago |Where do you come up with such ideas!?
When is Sony going to release what?
Do any of you know something for sure?
Yes, Nikon buys sensors from Sony and puts them to a better job..yes..both Nikon&Sony are happy with it since each build the part that they are best at…Sony has bought the Toshiba facility to increase production..so it needs to continue selling sensors to Nikon also..
The most important thing is that SONY uses the same sensors, so if they build the whole package to compete well against Nikon in terms of sale they would get even more profit..simple as that.
However, untill the moment of speaking at least, Nikon does a far better job than Sony and it appears to follow this trendline in the future…I simply don’t understand why is Sony moving so slow.
There will be competition for the NEX-es..and that means trouble.
Nobody says it is easy to go against the most established camera makers..I’m sure Canon is carefully watching and planning ahead, too.
We would all love to know an official schedule for Sony cameras&lenses in the 2011..not just talk, wouldn’t we!?

2 years ago |Sony is moving slow due to reasons as speculated. Attention diverted to slt and nex. They needed somethng to steal the thunder from canikon. Let’s just hope the a700 will steal the show again. But the the longer the wait, the higher the expectation and the bigger the disappointment if there is one.

2 years ago |Sony should just buy out Nikon, and kill off Canon for good.
End of that story
James
2 years ago |Yes monopolies are great for the consumer. High prices and no innovation. Do you really want Sony to buy Nikon and kill off Canon?
AVESTA
2 years ago |Yes I do actually. I don’t agree with your logic that acquisitions lead to higher prices and lack of innovation. In fact, I think when knowledge is shared companies are capable of doing better.
Imagine how much cheaper a nikon camera would be since they wouldn’t have to buy their sensors from sony anymore. That’s one of the reasons it gets marked up. They pass the expenses along to the consumer.
Besides, how much innovation has canon really had… it’s not like they’re changing the face of photography every year. Sony has done more for photography in the past 5 years than canon has. Canon just builds bigger and faster… NO CREATIVITY AT ALL
Sky_walker
2 years ago |Hm… Canon made first-ever zoom-fisheye lens in 2010 allowing you to choose between circular and full-coverage.
To name one recent innovation. It ain’t that bad really – if you’ll look at Canon forums you’ll find out people saying that Pentax brought more innovation to photography than Sony with all it’s money did during last 5 years, with exception of SLT (which is good only for entry to mid-range, not pros, as they keep telling).

2 years ago |Let us get this straight. Sony is going to sell Nikon their 24 Mega-pixal sensor that will be placed in the A77. Nikon is going to beat Sony to the market with an advanced mirroless camera while Sony deals with the NEX 7. If this (Nikon) is a competitor to the A77 Sony lost big time. This just does not make any since.
robo

2 years ago |I really can’t remember but has Sony EVER sold a sensor to Nikon before they were using it in one of their cameras?
I thought Nikon had to stand in line and Sony got first kick at the can.
Sky_walker
2 years ago |Yep. That’s true.
I’ve read once that Sony Semiconductors policy is giving details about Sensors to 3rd party companies at least 6 months after Sony Imaging got them.
So I doubt we’ll see any Nikon camera with new sensor before Sony using it. Though it’s possible if Sony would delay works on the new camera with already-developed sensor. (like they do with A77)
john
2 years ago |Wasn’t the rumored NEX7 to have the new 24 MP sensor also?
So maybe a Jan release of NEX7 and Nikon counter with their mirrorless pro in April?
Sky_walker
2 years ago |HMmm… I have no idea.
Original rumor says:
one of our trusted sources already told us that Nikon will use some kind of “tweaked” Sony sensor.
and most importantly: Nikon tested two sensors, a 16 megapixel and a 24 megapixel sensor.
So one thing is sure: It’s not certain if Nikon will use 24 MPx sensor. My bet would be that it won’t but… it’s just a guess.

2 years ago |Dang, I hope Sony would at least make the nex-7 look really high end and have loads of buttons. Mabye even make it look like a rangefinder. I just tried the Nikon p7000, I love the body design but live view is so slow, Sony certainly has the upper hand in this area.
santela
2 years ago |This actually makes sense.
Sony is targeting the point-and-shoot crowd and making huge money on low end mirrorless cameras. Nikon’s plan is to attract prosumers, so technically they are competing in different markets… for now.
If the price is right for the Nikon, I might have to jump ship. Had a great run with the NEX, but the lens quality is still lackluster.

2 years ago |canon just has made bigger and faster improvements no major advancements… Sony is using an old translucent tech into digital. I would have liked a bigger faster a7xx. a77 rumors of 24 mp I dont mind + 100′s k ISO sounds interesting. I still can’t justify de long wait for the new gen of a700. The sony FF market in my humble opinion is an investmnt gamble l
c preece
2 years ago |It’s not just bigger and faster with Nikon and Canon. They have also improved and have superior auto focus and low light/high ISO performance. Their bodies are well sealed and well made and feel so in your hands. I own the Sony a350 and the HVL42 flash wobbles in its mount and any lenses larger than kits are loose in the lens mount. Shooting above ISO 400 is not an option. I paid $900 new for this camera before I knew better. The biggest plus for Nikon and Canon is they are historically reliable when it comes to model upgrades, firmware upgrades and lens inventory. I have been patiently waiting for the a700 replacement and I’m concerned that Sony is more interested in filling it with gimmicks than making it a high end amateur photography tool. I hope I’m wrong. I also agree with you regarding the future of the Sony FF line. It’s a gamble that I don’t think Canon or Nikon owners will ever take.
Mr M
2 years ago |I cant recall if my F42 wobbles on my old A350. I thought the A350 is a great cam among the camera of of its time. (D80, 450D)
But yes, all these teasing and no show from Sony is making me uneasy . . . .
However, sometimes, its just the itch to get a new camera thats hurting. 80% of the time, our existing gear is enough to do all that we need right ? Cheers

2 years ago |You’re living in the past. No Canon or Nikon for less than 1k$ beats the A580 in terms of noise performance.
c preece
2 years ago |I can’t judge the a580 because there not for sale in CA yet, but ISO comparisons in DXO are much higher than the Sony a55 and the Nikon D300s. It will be interesting to see how the 580 does against the D7000 and D3100 when it arrives at DXO. As far as living in the past Sony’s build quality hasn’t changed below the a700, the AF systems have only been marginally improved and there still focusing their attention on everything below the a700 and if we believe the information were getting the a700 replacement won’t even be a DSLR.
Sky_walker
2 years ago |“the AF systems have only been marginally improved” – Well, comparing A550 with A350 – cause these two I had chance to compare side-by-side – the difference is huge. It’s like… 50% faster and works with ~1.5 EV higher range. (so you can focus in darker rooms than you would with A350). So there is an improvement.
A580 on the other hand has even faster AF than A550, though I didn’t check the light sensitivity.
Q
2 years ago |Putting things into perspective here, IF Nikon really do get the 24mpx that belongs to the A77 then does that not mean the A77 is probably set for release, just waiting on timing?
There is a lot of Nikon Vs Sony here, but the winners will be those who shoot the best images, wait is this a photography site or a gear acquisition fanboy page?
Cameras are not for bragging rights fellas, if so you aren’t any better then any other fanboy out there pissing off photographers.

2 years ago |The BIG thing will be the lenses. If Nikon comes out with 3-4 lenses, and say… 2 pancakes, or one very good quality pancake than well…
…sorry Sony but your NEX is cooked.
So far we haven’t seen any concepts of new Sony pancakes, even though we know roadmap for 2011 and 2012 of NEX lenses (which surprises with small number of them) so I think here’s the point where Sony might loose badly with Nikon system. Though life will show how the things are.

2 years ago |Given Fuji used to use nikon SLR bodies in recent years…..the X100 is that a fuji design or a Nikon design?
Just like with the SLR bodies Fuji throwed in a different sensor and choose for a fixed lens. Maybe the Nikon will be very similar to the fuji (so to say) only the Nikon will allow to change lenses and has a different sensor.
It’s more or less like in the car industry: one platform, many models (GM: Epsilon platform, Models: Saab 9000, Opel Insignia, Buick LaCrosse,…..)
Q
2 years ago |That was for the S3 and S5 camera’s that Fuji released and nothing else. To say the X100 is a Nikon/Fuji collaboration is a far stretch in this instance. Fuji have released many bodies over the years and I doubt they would really need help here, seeing as they didn’t require a specific mount to rely on.
