(SR4) No new Sony NEX camera or Alpha at CP+ show. (but something else is coming?)

The CP+, the biggest asia photoshow of the year will start on Wednesday. I have one bad news and two good news. The bad news first: There will be no new NEX camera or Alpha camera! Please don’t cry yet because there are also two good news:
1) I have been told there could be new stuff like new lenses, new colored NEX cameras and maybe something else(?).
2) Sony chose to launch the big stuff within the second and third quarter of the year. So you don’t have to wait a lot! “he who laughs last, laughs best“! I will post more about that soon!
Don’t miss any rumor. Keep following us on Facebook, Twitter and follow our RSS-feed!
Reminder (SR = Sonyrumor):
SR1=probably fake rumor
SR2=rumor from unknown sources
SR3=50% chance it is correct
SR4=rumor from known sources (60-80% the rumor is correct)
SR5=almost certainly correct!

New lenses would be nice, the NEX series really needs a couple of new ones. Maybe we’ll get more info as we get nearer Q2 and Q3.
Would’ve been nice to see a release of A77/A7xx and NEX-7, though…
Sky_walker
3 years ago |New lens would be nice? They would be great, far better than the release of new NEX camera – this system has like….5 times too few lenses currently including most key one missing so every lens should be welcome with wide open arms

And I’m sure everyone is thinking along these lines – why is Sony releasing so many cameras before they even release A77??

3 years ago |while we are here sitting and waiting like a bunch of fools for the 500/4 ssm and a sorry ass a77, canon just brought out a 500/4, a 600mm and a 200-400 1.4x extender and some new rebels…. whooptiedoo! al sony showed were some mockups and a lot of promises..bummer.
Dulaney Ward
3 years ago |We don’t know yet what Sony is showing. As for Canon, both of the new cameras were minor upgrades, and so were two of the lenses. The 200-400 with integrated 1.4 extender IS interesting, however.
SonyA77
3 years ago |On paper the rebels look like a basic refresh of existing models with a few minor things thrown in. I would easily take the A580 over them.
Late 2010 Sony released the A33/55 which ARE innovative and completely changed the face of the dSLR market, is that not enough for you then? Short memory perhaps?
How many people are rushing out to buy these new hyper-expensive lenses from Canon? They are not the same market that Sony is aiming for right now and people just don’t get it. Sony don’t care about Canikon, they are creating a new market of SLT buyers intending to leave the traditional dSLR makers in their dust trail.
Vlad
3 years ago |While the SLTs are in fact innovative, they aren’t targeted at the advanced crowd as of yet. Too much waiting for a successor of the A700 is getting people frustrated.
I really hope this time Sony builds up on what they started.
Myst
3 years ago |buy canon! PLEASE!
Canon released a UPDATED version of the 500 and 600mm so no new lenses
and the 200-400 while interesting i bet it was in development a long damn time, at least 3-4 years.
2 NEW rebels? NEW?!? wtf is new there same old ass 18mp sensor which isn’t that good anyway. Why do people always have to bitch, can’t you just take your camera and take pictures without Sony releasing something new each freaking day?
Vlad
3 years ago |“Each freaking day”? Certainly not. 4 years for the A700. And discontinued without even an announcement! Compared to that the two Rebels are very darn new.

3 years ago |Thank you Myst…..no I mean it!
I’ve been reading this site for a while, first to see about the A850 firmware release and to help me decide what platform direction to take with my business.
As a Minolta user, starting with an SR-1 then and SR-102, Maxxum 9000 before digital I’ve had concerns about my investment in the A-mount.
I must say that I wonder how many people that fill the pages on this site are photographers. I mean really take pictures for a living or at least part time for a living?
I don’t see much talk about the photography here or even the quality of the image, it’s winning and complaining about this or that or Sony is great and Canon is bad…
WOW
I understand that this IS a rumor site about Sony cameras but at some point doesn’t all come back to the art and business of photography?
I do care about the direction of this camera lens platform that I’ve invested time and money in just like many of you find much of your insight meaningful and helpfull.
But some need to stop and take a breath and take some pictures now and then.

3 years ago |Steve, Sony hasn’t adressed pros lately…i’ve said it before, they’ve been consumer orientated. Look at Canon, they are doing a decent job in the consumer market, but their best efforts are in the pro market as it seems if we take a look at what they did lately…changed the 70-200 f2.8 to an is II, the 300&400 f2.8 newer versions, the 500&600 f4 wer announced, and the 200-400 1.4x is to be launched soon.
There is no better marketing than this…show the more expensive products together with the consumer cameras, that’s a statement which sais it all…”from a newbie to a pro, we got you covered”.
Sony did nothing in the uper segment, just mockups….4 years for a replacement!?
c preece
3 years ago |Well said Daniel…you could say the same for Nikon and no I don’t own either Canon nor Nikon, but lets see what comes first a7xx or D3xx.
Rob
3 years ago |You sound enamored by putting a range of slrs together, but where are Canikons’ SLTs and mirroless offerings. Why not view Sony’s offerings as saying “we’re leading the way with new technology to change the way people (can) take pictures”? What’s wrong with that? It seems a very creative new direction to me. Does every product lineup have to be oriented the same way?
Sky_walker
3 years ago |Nope, it doesn’t have to, but camera life for many is like a ladder – you start with p&s, jump to bridge or mirrorless camera, than jump to entry-level, prosumer, pro-dslr. Currently Sony got well covered first steps up to midrange, though it’s missing the high grade equipment – no amount of p&s or even mid-range cameras make a difference for these high-range customers or those seeking for that range of equipment.
And guess what – right now, or even – since last year- is very best time for Sony to take care of the guys as A200-A300 owners got money and want to upgrade, and there’s plently of those ppl, who are now uncertain of what’s the future of their investnment with Sony’s obvious lack of dedication towards prosumer segment.
So if ppl are uncertain if their hundrets of bucks spent ain’t become worthless -they complain. Good that SAR exists cause right now it’s the only light of hope for those ppl (distant hope, but still…), so here’s why Sony should send a big Thank You to Andrea. Otherwise some of those ppl would surely go Canikon with no info or hope for A700 successor after 4years IMO.
Dulaney Ward
3 years ago |No one has had any reason to expect an A700 successor for more than about a year now (the average time between Nikon introductions at this camera level has been two and a half years), and, as painful as it has been, the loss of a year in the camera business is not unusual (cf the long wait for the 5D successor) or debilitating to those involved. Nor is “Sony’s obvious lack of dedication towards prosumer segment” been obvious, or even true. The camera that is ready now, has been beta tested and undergone “package” shots, and will be both introduced & released within a very few months, will make it very obvious that in fact Sony has been very dedicated indeed to this segment.
Vlad
3 years ago |Dulaney, that is just how you see it. The Nikon’s average is in fact more like 2 years. Two times more is certainly a lot, especially for a single APS-C pro model (that’s a loss of two years and counting). And I said it already – not only there have not been any incremental upgrades, but they discontinued the model without announcing anything! Currently you just can’t buy and advanced APS-C pro model from Sony.
And if rumors or even proof of some “package shots” are enough for you, they surely aren’t enough for me.
Sky_walker
3 years ago |Yep Dulaney, that’s true that Sony’s going to release the successor soon(tm) – but we know this actually only thanks to SAR (big thanks!) otherwise the perspective looks as follows: 4 years ago was released a prosumer camera, A700, after 2 years being usual cycle for such camera Sony was completely silent. In 3rd year Sony shown the mockup, people expected release on next trade show, than next, than next… we’ve got CP+ and know that there won’t be anything – after last PMA was a great point to quit Sony simply due to lack of any release which would be quite critical considering the huge leaps in tech made since 2008 (notably being new superb CMOS sensors and video, not saying about Sony’s new AF systems). That’s why I told about “Sony’s obvious lack of dedication towards prosumer segment” – no camera in the segment released for roughly one and a half a year since discontinuation of A700 is obvious lack of support for customers.
Daniel
3 years ago |Rob, please do something for us, put your imagination to work…that is if you are just a little bit serious about photography…what would be of more importance the lens or the camera!?
What’s the main limiting factor with taking a great shot? Please tell us, let us know…when it is down to serious work the lenses are pretty damn important…I made a comment on a Canon announcement…and look Rob, I’ve posted a link on another thread about another system which will take advantage of zeiss autofocus lenses.
I respect your opinion about SLTs, nice way to go, but far from being enough…i was saying something about Sony being consumer oriented and you just make my point.
I agree, not every product line have to be oriented the same way, but…Sony is so absent in some areas!!!!!!!
Inovation is great, absence is to be blaimed…if it’s down to consumer inovation only, well, i’ve said this before, it’s a poor marketing strategy.
SLTs are THE NEW THING…agreed, but at least for now, this has been implemented in consumer cameras only.
As far as we have no release date and official specs for the a77 it would be premature to take it into considration. It’s a mirrage built by Sony marketing for now, unless we should take picture with that foolish mockup.
A few years from now people will still remember the a700, a900/850, 24-70, 24 f2.0, 85 1.4, 135 1.8, 16-35 2.8 zeiss..but nowbody will be speaking that much of the a33, the a550, the a 290, we’ve seen to many of these, haven’t we!?
The higher end lenses and cameras are just a very good way to ensure everyone of your capabilities to product serious equipment and to let them know about your commitment.
Daniel
3 years ago |And another thing Rob, as well as others, please remember one thing…Sony was the last to bring video& very good(in fact the best as I’ve seen) live view to their line of products…they said this before, that they will add video when it will be good enough…It seems that at least Nikon as far as we know will have a line of mirrorless cameras…maybe they are just perfecting it as far as I am concerned…but Sony has not been in the lead with new technology..it has been used before, just that Sony has made a better use of it.
If to you SLT equals inovation alone, than you have very limited knowledge…you have to use light through the lens, you know, before it’s down to sensor color management…
There are many areas to perform better, not just the camera.
How many of Sony’s lenses use SSM ? I would love to see some upgrades here, as well as weather sealing.
Rob
3 years ago |I don’t need to use my imagination to know that the Zeiss glass is as good as any – I just walk across to my equipment bag and pick it up. Those aren’t imaginary. I’m kinda known for being serious about my undertakings, and have 9 letters after my name. I don’t make a living off my photography, but have published many photos through the years, and use photography in my work.
You can criticize the Sony system, but let’s be clear about the rate of highest end equipment replacement by the big boys. I sure haven’t seen Canon or Nikon turning over their high end equipment very fast either – and it’s all about the business model. The small, incremental changes in some mid market offerings may stir your jealousy, but not mine! Anyhow, too to do to waste much time here – have fun with your gripfest!

3 years ago |Not my cup of tea and not the reason I originally bought into Sony. I don’t care about Sony, Canon or Nikon mirror less or SLT’s. Once into Sony I had my eye on the overdue a700 replacement. It’s still overdue and may not be what I want (SLT), but I will try and have the patience to wait and see.
What I don’t get is why some people jump on you here if you don’t favor the mirror less or so called “new technology”. I handled the a33 and I did not like it at all, it’s not for everyone. I won’t shoot a lot of video so it’s not a make or break for me. Skywalker is right moving up is what it’s about for me and nothing Sony sells right now other than full frames feels like the next step for me! Having said that I don’t think Canon or Nikon right now has anything that would appeal to me either.
Daniel
3 years ago |I feel the same way…
Austin
3 years ago |I agree. I have dealt with the SLTs on many occasions, and to be honest, I just don’t really care for them. They’re okay in terms of image quality, but I’m one who enjoys the mechanical KACHUNK of my A700. Also I might add that at this point, I’m making good money and doing quite a bit of business running strictly from my A700 and even my A100. They keep up with me, I don’t have a need for video, and there is just something about having a camera that is substantial in your hands. The SLTs just feel like bulky point and shoots to me… anyways, I’m not trying to put down the SLTs by any means. I’m sure lots of people are in love with them. They’re just not for me.. Now maybe if the “A77″ has a build quality of my cameras I have now… I might have to indulge just to have an upgrade. . the A700 is lonnnnng overdue, but at the same time, it has proved to be rather advanced and capable over the years. At this point though, I’m worried that my cameras are going to bite the dust soon, and I’m getting really anxious for a new release from sony A7xx, A8xx, or A9xx, so that I won’t have to buy a discontinued camera if they don’t release it in time.. Oh well though, I guess we’ll all have to just be patient. You can’t rush anything great, you might just make them miss something critical. I just hope my cameras last.. :/
Oh, and by the way guys, I would take it easy when accusing sony of not being dedicated to their pro series. They’ve only been in the DSLR business for a few years. They didn’t know how the markets would react to them bringing out the big guns, and the economy across the world, especially in the US, has been in the dumps. Give them a chance. They’re working on it now obviously. I think it was rather smart of them to kind of stay aloof in the pro market. Wouldn’t you like to establish a cushion in the P&S and amateur dslr market before you go dumping money into pro grade cameras that the photographers might not warm up to? Now that they’ve seen that people love the system and they’ve shown the world that canon, nikon, olympus, and hasselblad etc are not the only companies in the photography business that can make a quality pro grade camera, I think that they’ll release new models and blow them out of the water in terms of bang for the buck and investment. I mean, look at the other brands, they out date their lenses on the regular. Alpha not only has just one line of lenses (minus NEX) that can be used on all of their cameras, they allowed us to continue to use the Minolta lenses that we all love and cherished for years! In the five years that Sony has been working in the DSLR market, I think they’ve made a damn good impression. lets just hope they don’t let us all down this year.

3 years ago |Daniel, a little perspective here–not an excuse, just perspective:
Canon & Nikon have been working on their position among professional photographers for half a century; Sony has had just five years.
Given the enormous lead that Canikon had on Sony, when Sony entered the dslr market, and the comprehensive & extraordinarily ambitious program that Sony has set out for itself, they have, in my opinion, done quite well. In fact, Sony has gotten into the market for ILCs or compact system cameras (CSCs) well ahead of Canikon, who have not responded yet–although I am sure they will.
As you say, Sony has been building up their base in the “consumer” market during the last two years–and they will continue to work on it. Of course they haven’t ignored the more serious photographers, having introduced a good number of very serious FF lenses, most recently the 24 f2. But this is the year that they will be emphasizing very serious cameras, and will, I believe, complete the job in 2012.
In fact, if you pay attention, you will see that, while in 2008 when they introduced the A900, they denied that they were entering the professional market, that reluctamce has entirely disappeared in the last six months. They are actually calling the A850/900 cameras “professional” cameras–and they are heavily promoting their own stable of professional photographers, the Sony Artisans of Imagery, and talk routinely about the new “professional” cameras that will be announced soon.
That means to me that they believe they are ready to challenge Canikon in the arenas where they have been unchallengeable, the arenas of high amateur and professional photographers. And that they are about to present the cameras that will make the challenge.
The A700 and the A900 were never really intended as challenges, but more as shots across the Canikon bows. The opening shots of the real challenge were heard last year: the NEX and SLT cameras. This is the year for the first shots at a more professional level.
I am equally frustrated as many others to have had to wait so long for a successor for the A700. It has been painful, and destructive to Sony’s cause. But we are emerging from that era. We’ll see more major steps forward from Sony this year, and perhaps from others, and most of us will be unwilling to turn back.
Daniel
3 years ago |I really hope they do have a strategy at last, i think they’ve cosidered sales figures more than anything lately. Just want to see serious commitment from Sony…don’t you forget that they haven’t started from zero, what have they done with the Minolta herritage?!? I’m still a little bit reluctant to believe in this so called one camera revolution from Sony…we all have to wait and see, just how much more???? In the meanwhile, why aren’t there more lenses developed? I understand that “THE” camera is not ready yet, but how about some lenses!?
And it is a great gamble to relly this much on the a77 after 4 years of promisses…they should prepare their move very well, lenses, maybe new flashes, accessories…it is almost unbelievable to relly this much on this one camera to keep a great deal of people commited to your system and delay its announcement this much…
It is unheard of…just proves a lack of decent strategy and customore comunication services.
For those of us who have invested in Sony I hope they get their s*** together, stop this s*** they’ve been putting up within the last year about the a700s succesor and announce a release date…and afterwards get serious about FF. You said so yourself…
Dulaney Ward
3 years ago |Sony will announce the release date in due time. It seems very likely, from Andrea’s rumor, that it will come in Q3, and Andrea believes currently that it will come at the beginning of Q3, ie July.
I am sure that it is ready now, along with at least one other camera, and is just standing in line waiting for the time marketing has set for its introduction.
Regarding lenses, Sony has been introducing lenses pretty much as fast as anyone, though last year saw a slowdown in Alpha lenses, probably due to the introduction of the NEX cameras. Andrea expects new lenses to be introduced this week–whether they will be a-mount or e-mount we’ll see. The lenses that Sony has been introducing since 2008 should be a clue as to their direction: they include many lenses at the very pinnacle of their class, both CZ & G.
The A77 will not be “THE” revolutionary camera. The revolution began last year, and will be continued this year & next. In fact the A77 may not even be the only 7-level A-mount camera introduced this year. We simply don’t know.
Andrea has indicated today that the will be big news in the second quarter, and I think that he’ll have news of that soon.

3 years ago |Well if you go by the quotes on this site regarding the a7xx replacement it’s going to be god’s gift to the photography world. 3 years ago |Dulaney, “Sony will announce the release date in due time” – what does that even mean?
Also I do not agree with your statement above that Sony has had only 5 years. They bought KM! If they hadn’t, then it would be 5 years. I am certainly not saying it’s easy, but you make it sound like Sony is some tiny startup that just entered a new field with its pants down.
See, what most people are asking here is merely for some resemblance of commitment – put some incremental upgrades, do not discontinue the model, make some official statement about an upcoming pro model (not the vague stuff we are hearing now). These things are easily done, heavy competition or not.
From what I see Sony only puts new models, but can’t follow up on existing ones and improve them – except for the A580. It seems they lack confidence or focus.
