(SR4) Quad Bionz for the new Sony FF camera (+short private message)
Dear SAR readers!
Sorry if I didn’t post many news the last two days but I had connection problems (one) because I lost my iPhone which I usually use to be connected while I am working (two) because I am currently travelling from one place to another. I just solved problem number one because I just got my new iPhone…bye bye 649 Euros
Now that I am back I can share with you the next rumor from one of my very trusted sources!
The new Sony Flagship camera (we call it A950 but it could have another name) will feature a new Quad-Bionz processor. This is necessary to elaborate the new huge amount of data created by the over 30 mega-pixel(!) sensor. The camera should be able to shoot at least 8fps (frames per secondin jpg mode)! The source also told me the specs are not 100% defined although at that point he expects only slightly changes. He also confirms the new FF camera will not be announced before the end of the year (2011).
And a new source told us that Sony will discontinue the A850 and sell the A900 only starting by early 2011. I remind you that there are currently instante rebates on those cameras and many Sony lenses (Click here to read the full list of the ongoing rebates.).
That’s it for now! If you can help me to get more info about future Sony products (like the NEX-7, A77 and A950) feel free to use our contact form on the right sidebar. You can avoid to send me your name and email adress. All I need is your anonymous message
I am also available at sonyalpharumors@gmail.com if you want to contact me! Thanks!
Reminder (SR = Sonyrumor):
SR1=probably fake rumor
SR2=rumor from unknown sources
SR3=50% chance it is correct
SR4=rumor from known sources (60-80% the rumor is correct)
SR5=almost certainly correct!

2 years ago |Interesting. I’m more interested in the sensor itself, but that 8fps is phenomenal as well.

2 years ago |Quad Bionz means Bionz processing speed has no improvement, so need to use 4. It will be a battery killer.
Launch in 2012 is definitely a bad news, A850/A900 is way to old to compete, not to mention Sony has no high end model to compete with C/N
hanugro
2 years ago |Don’t be daft. the current A580 Bionz is already an improvement from the A900 Bionz. I think the requirement for 4 Bionz tell how much the spec will be (very high). Also it may not be 4 different Bionz processor but may be a quadcore Bionz in a single die. With smaller nm process it may not require 4x power as single core Bionz requirement.

2 years ago |Quad Bionz is more speedy and advantage, 2X Dual Bionz processors(current A900)

2 years ago |Quad Bionz is probably like quad core Intel chips
Slower clock speed but less heat and much faster throughput.
Intel had problems pushing clock speeds with their P4 chips much past 3.4. The heat was so great you could fry egss on the processor so the reverted to using 2-4 P3 chips at a slower clock speed and solved the problem.
So by going backwards they actually moved forwards.
Heat has been shown to be a problem with the A33/A55 mostly due to video using SSS but heat in future cameras that will undoubtedly will continue to be a concern and have to be dealt with.More electronics, EVF video, high FPS = more heat.
Not sure about battery consumption.
I would imagine that there will be at least Dual Bionz in the upcoming A77. rumored 24MP at 10+FPS.
May also be Quad Bionz
Personally with all this amount of data and power required I think Sony should offer a OPTIONAL belt pack for these 2 cameras.Huge quick charge battery which could also power flash gun + 4 memory card slots user defined Raw to one jpeg to the other sequential burn every other file.

2 years ago |belt pack? Now that sounds like a hunter.
john
2 years ago |well Minolta/Sony have had battery belt packs to power flash for years now.

2 years ago |@Simon_P: If speed didnt improve, i’m pretty sure it’s energy use did. Sony isn’t that stupid. I’m just hoping the new A77 has some of this new processor magic as well, like 3 bionz processors… It would be sweet!

2 years ago |Great news… glad they’re waiting until 2012. We can still get some use out of our A900′s

2 years ago |I confirm:
The New A1000 will be presented in end 2011 !

2 years ago |As a Cell and PSP Engine developer, I believe in Sony’s semi conducting design capability, but just a 2x / 4x cannot proof the processing power. (Should there be any Bionz II replacing 2x Bionz?)
also, the timing is a bit disappointing. Canon should have launched 5Dm3 by that time.
And I believe A950 should have similar capability as 1D line in order to compete well in the market

2 years ago |If the A950 is going to go against the Canon 1D line, then Sony will need a new dSLR to go against the 5D Mk 3 in the future.

soz to be pedantic

2 years ago |You should have said “isn’t” a word – it’s “instant”. Note the proper use of apostrophes.
Here is a webpage to help you with the use of apostrophes in English (the site is funny but accurate):

2 years ago |Sorry, sensor noob here, but would Bionz processor mean the next FF will NOT be SLT? (No SLT fan here)
Can’t decide on buying 850 now or saving more for a 30MP FF monster in a year. (Still playing with my KM7D at present and just dying to go FF on my lenses again.)
panfruit
2 years ago |Nope, processor just processes information from the sensor, does not make a difference from SLT or DSLR.

2 years ago |2012…… that’s okay for me
But, If Sony has any desire to compete with Canon and Nikon for the professionals then sooner would be better.
Of course, there is more to a camera than just a body and Sony needs to get real serious about quality lenses.
In 2012 my a850 will be almost three years old and IF Sony’s is serious and have revamped it ageing Minolta glass I’ll be there with my $$$.

2 years ago |Hey, before end of year (2011) means not before end of this year (i.e. @ 2011) or not before end of 2011 (i.e. @ 2012)??
twoomy
2 years ago |Hey folks… Where I live, this year is 2010. The new full-frame camera won’t be announced for another two years? Not until 2012? Or late 2011?
Daemonius
2 years ago |I highly doubt Sony will discontinue A850. From what I heard, its more likely, that A900 will be discontinued (which actually will be very logical when they announce A950).
Though, I can be wrong..
hanugro
2 years ago |Well A900 may drop below $2000 to be the cheaper FF alternative when A950 released.
hanugro
2 years ago |Hope other will be class as well like all cross AF sensor with f/2.8 center and the rumored 1/12000 shutter.
panfruit
2 years ago |New AF system Sony needs for sure. :O I demand 15 triple-cross Af sensors!!

2 years ago |this is good news!! but I would have thought the fps would be higher than just 8. I wonder what the video capabilities of these thing are going to be:-) probably thats where you really see the four processors shine!
Cheers, Josh

2 years ago |If Sony prices it reasonably and doesn’t go Nikon on us and charges 12,000 bucks for it, I may be jumping for one of these puppies, unless the A77 is such a milestone and I go for that first.
I wouldn’t be too woried if Nikon or Canon release flagship cameras before Sony, what would be the big fuss? They’ve done that so far for a while and that didn’t prevent Sony from releasing the A900 neither it prevented A900/850 users from making great images with them. Same applies for the APS-C models.
Besides, Sony users use Alpha mount lenses and accesories no? Last I heard, the D3S and the 1DsMmkIII do not accept Alpha mount lenses…
What I would really like from Sony is a major improvement in the image processor, including automatic color fringing correction of lenses in-camera, an expansion of creative styles (like Pentax or Olympus have), in-camera RAW Processing, a major overhaul to the JPÈG engine so images in JPEG look just as good as RAW files can look after processing, ability to embed copyrigt and photographer’s name to the EXIF file from the camera automatically and finaly an ability to manually add or remove color tints on the WB like in the Nikon D90.
Those improvements would be very welcome and useful to me and aside from the JPEG processing issue, I don’t think they would be very hard to implement but I maybe wrong.
Oh and just so people won’t complain. add video with 1080p and all sorts of funky and standard frame rates, hell make it even an user custom selectable frame rate option and that would kill Canon’s video or at least seriously hurt it.
I just really hope they don’t drop OVF for good in FF or APS-C lines.

2 years ago |649 Euros for an iPhone?!? Boy, this is half the way to the 1,8/135 ZA…..
Steve Long
2 years ago |I doubt Sony is going to listen to me, but I believe it should be about producing the highest quality sill images possible….
In my opinion, anyone willing to spend over $2,000.00 just for a camera body is also going to shot RAW and is planning on post processing using Adobe Camera RAW or some other package and is not really interested in JPEG, styles and other stuff that most professionals now do on computers instead of darkrooms.
I’m hoping for alpha-mount body that captures the best image possible; at 100 ISO all the way to 6400 ISO and above so I can avoid flash photography as much as I can, so noise is important.
I’m okay with FF, APS-C or even something new; just make it A-mount so I don’t lose my investment in CZ lenses.
To me it’s about a detailed sharp in focus well exposed image
Other basics are important too, like fast and accurate AF, enough MP whatever enough is.
And it would be nice if I didn’t need to worry as much as I do about weather, so do more sealing like I’m seeing on other professional cameras and lenses.
But sell me a great camera first and I’ll do the rest!
