(SR4) Sony announcement on March 13!

Guys! Mark that day…March 13! That is the day when Sony will announce the new Sony A57 camera with 16 Megapixel sensor. I don’t know if there will be some other new products like lenses or NEX cameras. I heard of a new NEX camera coming in April but maybe it’s going to be announce on the same day as the A57?
What we know so far about the A57:
16 megapixel ExmorHD sensor
100-16.000 ISO (up to 25.600 with MultiNR)
12fps
Same menu and focusing of the Sony A77
Swifel screen
No top LCD
No GPS
New battery grip
Not the same EVF as the A77/A65
Price: Same as the A55 (Check: Amazon, Adorama, B&H, J&R, eBay)
Stay tuned on SAR!!!
Reminder (SR = Sonyrumor):
SR1=probably fake rumor
SR2=rumor from unknown sources
SR3=50% chance it is correct
SR4=rumor from known sources
SR5=almost certainly correct!

4 months ago |on my A77 it has only one benefit that is of interest to me, I can switch it off to save battery juice
Ken
4 months ago |NEVER had it turned on since day one… I have ZERO interest for GPS… I don’t understand why people make such a big fuss about it.
Bernard
4 months ago |I do have it turned on all of the time. It was one of the main reasons why I bought the A55 over the A33 at the time. Essential for travel photography when you want as little hassle as possible and spend time on more useful things than geotagging (it does not take a lot of time, but is an extra effort).
So I AM disappointed they take it out. it does not take up much space and probably is not very expensive (as it even is on several p&s).
SonyA77
4 months ago |Because it is useful. If it isn’t useful to you then so what?
monkeyfacemcbride
4 months ago |@SonyA77 – the problem is that whether you find it useful or not, you still have to pay for it. sony are removing good photographic features from their cameras (tethering, off-camera wireless flash master etc etc) and replacing them with seldom used things for me like GPS and Face recognition. I’ve never taken a photo in my entire life where I’ve had no clue where I was, so for me its a few pounds on the price that I’d rather they spent on something else. Most decent phones now come with GPS, alot of cars have GPS, you can buy standalone GPS units, Sony could sell a GPS dongle, but no they just chuck it in there and charge.
Peoples opinions on it will vary, the price they pay will not, so its highly likely that some are not going to miss it.
SonyA77
4 months ago |@monkeyfacemcbride
Cost doesn’t come into it, the GPS unit cost will be pennies.
monkeyfacemcbride
4 months ago |@SonyA77
GPS units dont cost pennies, they cost pounds/dollars, anywhere between 2 and 10 dependant on the model and whether the ceramic antenna is included or purchased separately (thats what we pay and there’s no reason to think that sony pay different). think of the cost involved for a whole production run of say 1 million units over a couple of years and thats quite a sum of money. Now, think whether you could do something more useful with that cash.

4 months ago |GPS is not at the top of everyone’s list. At the top should be the sensor I(same as the NEX-5n?), controls, ergonomics, AF speed, metering and overall IQ.

4 months ago |Maybe A57 and some NEX lenses?
What about a 20mm/f2.0 or a 24-70mm/f2.8 or a 85mm/f1.8 ?
Jack
Carl
4 months ago |I’d take that 20/2.0 for A mount.
The Lotus Eater
4 months ago |24-70mm f2.8??
Wouldn’t that be overly large for a standard fast zoom on NEX? 24-70s tend to be full frame.
You should expect a 16-50mm f2.8 instead.
Jack
4 months ago |Yes and no.
Yes, it would be a “larger” lens but if you look at the:
Sony Alpha Zeiss 24mm/f2.0 – weighs 555g (19.6 oz)
Sony NEX Zeiss 24mm/f1.8 – weighs 225g (7.9 oz)
Sony Alpha Zeiss 24-70mm/f2.8 weighs 985g (2 Ib 3 oz)
Sony NEX Zeiss 24-70mm/f2.8 COULD weigh 450 – 550 g ??
This is still less or close to the NEX 18-200mm/f3.5-6.3 which weighs 524g
So the question is then;
- What would you prefer, 18-200mm/f3.5-6.3 or 24-70mm/f2.8 if they were about the same size and weight ?
The Lotus Eater
4 months ago |I’m no lens engineer, but I’m not sure it’s as simple as using primes as a reference. Zooms are far more complicated in design, with more lens elements.
The problem is maintaining f2.8 all the way to 70mm at the same time as keeping the size, image quality and price in check.
18-200 or 24-70? Hmm, I’d like both!

Maximus
4 months ago |The A57 will not be a camera thats meant to appeal to serious photographers.
Jason
4 months ago |Maybe it is intended for serious photogs. The ones who dont care about silly GPS features. Just give me the best sensor., AF and anything related to the best IQ. Soccer Moms may need GPS, but serious Photographers dont (how did they do for so long without it anyway?)

SonyA77
4 months ago |If you think that the A77 has too many pixels, then you don’t know what you are doing with it! You are probably better off with a lower-end camera.
Adam Maas
4 months ago |The high pixel count is as much of a drawback for the A77 as it is a strength. The continuous shooting rate of the A77 is grossly constrained by the high pixel count, making the 12fps semi-useless as the A77 lacks the buffer depth to handle more than 13 shots and also lacks the write speeds to clear the buffer fast enough to allow more than a couple back to back bursts. So for any sort of action or sports shooting the A77′s pixel count cripples it despite the fast AF and high fps.

4 months ago |Not worth getting excited over really. Just a slightly updated a55.
I expect it to be an a55 with better EVF and not much else. Other rumors don’t make sense. Why would they give it a better focus system than the a65?
LEdgars
4 months ago |A65 has a bit better AF system than A55. Agree EVF is most important part also in my decision. If I will buy a57, I should compare EVF with a900 OVF every second day.

4 months ago |most exciting news ever
.
i don’t need these megapixels, 12 is enough, i don’t need autofocus for i use manual fixes. i don’t need all these extra features like gps.
i live in siberia, it means 40 sunny days a year and the days in winter are as short as your dinner breaks.
i NEED high iso, not that noisy a77 stuff with noisy sky at iso200. i do not print, i do only for computers and i REALLY like to have aesthetic feeling to my pictures that there is no disgusting luminance noise. yes, i LIKE pixel peeping, because i know how little noise kills the tones. if i have to move noise filter in lightroom to more than “1″ it’s a disaster for me
.
and i need big DR because when there is sun the snow is like a mirror and the dark shadows are nearly black. i hate to choose what i’m going to loose – shadows or the snow.
and i’m not alone here because in russia most people HAVE to put camera to the shelf for 4-7 months in a year. because it’s just useless or very hard to use when it’s constant darkness on the outside.
not everyone lives under southern skies.
and this new camera makes me happy. if i save for long time i will manage to buy it (yea, average salary is tiny here, some people get $150-200/mo). i will throw away the mirror because i don’t need autofocus and will finally get a good stabilized high iso camera with peak focusing.
and yes, i don’t want FF because i need deep depth field for my mini-size nature shots. and because good lens for FF cost way more than i can afford.
in short, this camera is going to be king here. so many people waited for something like that.
monkeyfacemcbride
4 months ago |This post could easily be mistaken for trolling (and probably will be by some) but it actually raises a some very, very good points. I hope the camera meets your expectations.
гость
4 months ago |i hope so too, the only way to spoil it would be to use some old version EVF or to use sensor older than in nex-5n. and if it will be next version of nex-5n sensor..
anyways it’s going to be the first camera i want to switch to in 4 years.
Spoon
4 months ago |But he/she will be disappointed for the simple reasons that the high ISO performance will be in the realms of the A35/A55 still.
гость
4 months ago |why would it be worse even with nex-5n sensor and removed mirror? iso quality would be identical to that of the nex-5n, which is acceptable. i don’t want nex-5n because it has no stabilization and no built-in viewfinder (in spring it’s nearly impossible to use it when snow gets shiny icy cover everywhere). +relatively weak body which would make me nervous having 2kg lens hanging down from it when i climb some slopes or jump. my friend has nex-5n and i tortured it enough. if iso400 will be ideal – no luma, no chroma, i already will be happy
. i don’t expect iso800 to be usable of course
.
skeptical
4 months ago |OK, but if you want to get rid of the translucent mirror, why don’t you get the A580 instead? It will be cheaper, and the raw performance of the sensor is not going to be so drastically different (check A580 and Nex-5n in raw). The Nex-5n has mainly an improved JPEG engine, that’s all.

No REAL cameras… A77 is kind of disappointment… Nikon is releasing the good stuff…
I want good body, 2 dials… 1/8000… translucent with mirror flip-up?
Any news about this???
I mean… A77 is worse than D7000, NEX7…
Or maybe a A580 with a better body???
I don’t mind about the EVF, but the translucent mirror is getting up on my nerves due to the quality loss!

4 months ago |Any idea about what “swivel screen” means. I sincerely do hope that is is a screen like the NEX-7 and a580. I would be very sad if Sony has adopted that miserably side-hinged approach represented by e.g. the Canon 600D.
Would be very interesting indeed if it would share the focus module of the a77. Just hope that the EVF is good enough (the version in a55 is not, in my opinion).
Seeky
4 months ago |I think it will be the a33/55/65 swivel screen? I wonder what the evf will be, why would they develop another one, inferior to the a65/77 evf? Is it an updated a33/35/55 evf? Maybe its of the same quality like the a65/77, but the size is smaller. So the price will be lower compared to a65. Its good if the updated AF module will find its way to lower end bodies, but strange considering the a65 position.
Dennis_photo
4 months ago |Since the major reason for a33/35/55/65 not having a vertical grip is the screen mount with a hinge at the cameras bottom I do not think a57 will have this approach if it will be compatible with a vertical grip.
This is why I think it is more likely that it will have something similar to the a580, that is a well proven Sony construction and it works very well with vertical grips.
So… I hope that the a57 will have a body comparable to the a580 in size and some of the technology inherited from the a77 (e.g. bracketing).

4 months ago |Sorry for my poor english (I’m french)
Here in France, most of serious photo magazine loved the a77 (build quality, AF speed, resolution, even high iso performance is good – sure not excellent – if you shoot under iso6400, full manual video mode). I don’t undertand people who wants a 16Mpix instead of 24. If you look at DXO marks, the a55 (16Mpix) has a lower score than the a77.
I’m not a pro photographer. I nerver use iso higher than 3200. I have both the a55 and a77. IMHO, a77 at iso 3200 is sightly better than a55 with DXO optics 7.
Actually, it’s always funny to read all those comments made by people who haven’t relly try the a77. It’s a great camera, but you have to learn how to use it correctly.
Stop complain and take picture, and stop do Pixel Peeping

4 months ago |THE best APS-C sensor at the moment is the Sony 16 megapixel, ala NEX-5n, A580, etc (D7000, K-5). If Sony has taken a smaller body like the A55 and packed it with a much better sensor and stripped down whiz-bang (superfluous?) features like GPS, etc. Then this may be a very good SLR-like body to have. I am interested to see if this pans out to be true, but with that sensor combined with the AF of the bigger boys, watch out!

4 months ago |I don’t have a problem with Sony releasing more new bodies (true, I personally would like a new full frame). I’m in the UK where a number of big photographic retailers only currently list 2 or 3 SLT bodies (Warehouse Express – Just the A65 and A77, Camera World – A55, A65 and A77). Given that the high end stuff is usually propped up financially by volume sales of entry level equipment it would make perfect sense if we saw 2 or maybe 3 new entry/mid range releases. *Please note that the comments above are based on my UK perspective only – and yes I do know that I can go to Amazon/Argos/Tesco etc and pick up other A mount bodies than the ones mentioned*.
I’m currently using an A700 and getting great results. I always shoot RAW and normally I don’t go higher than ISO200 but even at 800 there is very little noise. I haven’t used an A77 but I can only assume that IQ must be a significant improvement (newer = better right?).
For me: 36+mp FF yes please!
bas076
4 months ago |A700 at ISO 800 very little noise? Are you serious? I change it to A580 mostly because of noise perfomanse. At ISO 200 I could stay with Minolta 5D.
P.S. For what Sony released such a body like A65 I still can’t understand.
G
4 months ago |It will of course depend on what your opinion of ‘very little’ means. I’m not expecting noiseless images at ISO800 but with a properly processed RAW file the level of noise is, to my mind at least, more than acceptable. This is just my opinion and you might feel differently.
bas076
4 months ago |If the image after processing in RAW convertor and PS can’t provide “per pixel” quality in full screen mode of 30″ dislplay, that means 2560×1600 ~= 4Mpix (that means 3-times downsize for A700), it is not acceptable level of noise. And A700 at ISO 800 in most situations can’t. Some times it can, but only some times, when you using ISO 800 in the light, shutting something fast moving.
G
4 months ago |Sorry, but I don’t really understand your reply.
Lets just agree that we have a different opinion of ‘acceptable’ and leave it at that.
