(SR4) Sony photo product announcement on February 20th?
I told you the real new camera and lens stuff from Sony is coming soon and after all the big CES and CP+ show. I just got an email saying that a new announcement may be scheduled for February 20th. New NEX-3n, new SLT A38 (and maybe the A58 too) could be announced. I am investigating this and ask my sources if they can confirm the rumor. Thanks!
UPDATE: One new anonymous source confirmed the date. Other sources confirmed there is indeed a camera announcement to come soon.
And you readers should stay tuned on SAR and if you still haven’t done it than subscribe our RSS feed (Click here) and Twitter stream (Click here). And join our very active Facebook comunity (Click here)!

5 months ago |I was waiting for a FF SLT from Sony for years. It was interesting to see the launch of Sony a99 last year. However, I’ve not yet bought it. The main concerns are as follows:
1. The 19 cross points focusing area is not wide enough;
2. The attractive AF-D function is only compatible to a limited Sony’s lenses;
3. There are too strong considerations for Video taking. And I think that is not a good thing for photographers.

Sony DSLRs are funny with there ONLY 19 Point AutoFocus system
Instead of giving up more DSLR camera AutoFocus points like the rest of the
camera world, Sony is promoting this (non-tested? or proven? ) autofocus system
Yet I can NOT find much about it, even on SONY’s own website
D-AF has hearsay and of course zellous fanboys cheering,
Before moving to A99 We need more than just –
Fan Happiness and It makes me Feel good reviews of the A99 D-AF
How about independent third party testings?
with Action photography – Compared to D800 or D800E or even the D600
1) What SONY Lens are FULLY compatible with this D-AF system
Please list them specifically
2) Are there ANY NON- Sony or Third Lens currently available or even nearby?
If so what are the models
3) Are there ANY verifiable – TRUELY Independent Third Party Evalatuions D-AF
– Compared to any other DSLRs or D800 or D800E or even the D600

Stan
5 months ago |That might not be the case with Nissin due to their equipment being highly modular at the core level as well as upgradeable through USB. There is firmware already available for A99, unfortunately this firmware isn’t installable through USB like the rest. But Nissin did promise a free firmware upgrade, all I have to do is ship it to a closest authorized repair center. I think there’s only one in US, in Maryland I think. Can’t remember.
In the worst case scenario I’ll just have to pay $50 for a shoe repair in order for them to replace a shoe and install firmware.
Robert
5 months ago |Me too. I’d be all over that one.
Frank
5 months ago |Well see that’s the problem isn’t it. Since Sony have just pissed off the manufacturers who did spend a chunk of cash developing support for iISO, it would be no surprise to find that they don’t bother supporting Sony in the future.
Frank

Stan
5 months ago |Man, I hope that Nissin will make DI866 MkII compatible with the new shoe very soon. I’ve got this flash with a Minolta shoe and I can see that you can change a shoe. Add to that firmware upgrades for Nissin flashes and suddenly it looks like a possibility. I just hope that I will not have to buy another flash. I love this flash.

Maybe A1 prototype will hit production lines?

Stan
5 months ago |@Sky_walker, sounds awesome! Especially considering that you’ll have to drag a car battery everywhere with you to power that thing
Sky_walker
5 months ago |Perhaps it has something to deal with apps that run in NEXes?
They’ll drop NEX family to replace it with photography-enabled PS4? Just imagine that – console that you can plug to TV for games, or take outdoors for shoothing people (make headshot and then print it!)… epic!
Sky_walker
5 months ago |+1. I’d also love to see the square sensor FF. Insta-buy for me.
Sky_walker
5 months ago |No, it’s not a glass, it’s focusing mechanism.
To describe it very vaguely – CDAF needs to be able to move in small steps back and forth as that’s how the CDAF works. Phase Detection AF lenses on the other hand need a focusing mechanism that moves fast and can stop accelerated glass in a precise point instantly. Of course it’s a great simplification, but should show nicely why DSLR lenses don’t work well with contrast detection.
@Frank – You’d better stop spreading FUD and showing your lack of knowledge and ignorance.

5 months ago |Maybe they are following the example of Jobs’s keynotes and making key announcements from various divisions. Sure Apple was/is a bit more unified than Sony but isn’t that one the things that Sony is trying to “fix” with their new strategy?!

5 months ago |The event on the 20th is held under the name – See the future. People have themself said that it will be about the Playstation 4, Sony never acknowledged that it will be about the Playstation. What if Sony is in reality unveiling something breath taking from the imaging division? Just sayin…

5 months ago |What Sony really needs to release is a bunch of good accesories! Flash units as well as microphones for the NEX-6 or a Hot shoe mounted mic in that allows to mount other accesories on top of that adapter.
In summary, Something to replace the F20AM, F43AM (keep weathersealing!), ECM-ALST1 and if the multi interface hotshoe is able to provide electrical current to charge the condensers in a flash, then provide a NEX-like F20S replacement with vertical bounce capability too. But the AUDIO-IN adapter is really needed for the NEX-6… Right now the only option for NEX-6 users to have AUDIO IN is by purchasing the XLR Kit.
Frank
5 months ago |it completely makes perfect sense
Rooru S.
5 months ago |Indeed. While using a pre-production a99 I tried my best to secure the HVL-F43AM, and while using it for 2 hours, at some moment I noticed in a second that it started to slip out of the hotshoe, only to be lucky enough to catch the flash before falling off camera. No problem with the Minolta Hotshoe (although it is a bit fragile) but with the new “old standard” hotshoe I have to be more concerned about the accesories put on it and recheck every 15 minutes to tighten the wheel.

5 months ago |Why all eyes are on Sony, why not announce other products at the same day? Yes, there is danger that things may get lost, but a PS4 announcement is sure to get more press than a camera announcement. So piggy backing on that kind of attention doesn’t seem like a bad idea. Especially if the products are somehow designed to work with each other in some undisclosed fashion.

5 months ago |Are there any rumours of new flashes with the Multi Interface Shoe?
The only one available at the moment is the HVL-F60M, which is large, expensive and overkill for the lower/mid end of the market. I’m not mounting an F60M to my NEX-6!
The ideal situation for the NEX-6 would be a new HVL-F20AM equivalent as a lightweight solution (and to enable wireless triggering), and a new HVL-F43AM equivalent for off-camera use.
The Lotus Eater
5 months ago |They also need to fix that 24mp sensor.

5 months ago |I don’t want to see an evolution. I want a revolutionary camera! NEX-7 successor be damned. Bring on the mirrorless FF with interchangeable lenses, aka FF NEX!
Joscha
5 months ago |The big gorilla in the room is the Nex 7 successor. The Nex 6 has surpassed the 7, while missing some of the desirable top-of-the-line features, like custom modes on the PASM wheel, a third dial, GPS, metal casing, higher video frame rates, and audio in. None of these features require much engineering, but would make the not-so-price-sensitive segment of NEX buyers jump on the offering.

5 months ago |PS4 will probably not be released before Christmas shopping or even next year, but the announcement is on the 20th. It is a big thing as nobody knows what the next gen consoles will be like, except for many rumors and many going in opposite directions.
The camera announcement is probably not that big, esp if it is only new low-end products getting announced (as part of Sony’s several-small-announcements strategy). August announcements from Sony camera division will be MUCH more exciting

5 months ago |Most likely will come along with A77 update. So expect it in second half of 2013. Though I seen some older rumour that it might come in early summer, before A77 successor (to differentiate these two families) which isn’t that far off
Sky_walker
5 months ago |No, it doesn’t have anything to deal with the A-mount. Stop spreading FUD.
DSLR lenses don’t work well with Contrast Detection. Same is truth for every mount. So you have two solutions for that: Either you implement a proper on-sensor PDAF (unlike what Canon did in EOS-M) or you build a CDAF-optimized lenses (Canon STM series).
In Sony case obvious solution would be to improve on-sensor PDAF. As creating CDAF-optimized lenses for DSLRs is basically making a step backwards.

5 months ago |Will the new hotshoe on those new SLT bodies still be compatible with an older flash like the HVL-F42AM, or would you need to buy a new external flashgun? Is there an adapter you would have to use?

5 months ago |Or they could save the r&d costs of redesigning every a-mount lens and just keep the existing mount… There’s no real benefit in standardising the mount when the ergonomics are so different. If the e-mount crowd need to use big heavy glass, there’s always adapters.

5 months ago |You are assuming the different arms of Sony communicate with each other. Historically this is not true – the different division are completely divorced from one another.
Example: Sony makes a video editing application called Vegas; for years the PC division bundled Adobe Premiere Pro on their PCs rather than Vegas Pro. Where is the sense in promoting a competitors software over your own?!
The gaming division will be completely separate from the camera division. The only commonality is the name SONY.

5 months ago |a99 not really competitive in what? quantity of how many full frame been release or quality of a camera having? did u really own a99 urself? if no then end of story..if yes, then u are wasting your money or you are too professional which u state a99 not even in pro level camera. If it is not pro level camera, i duno why my country so many industry pro level user change from canon, nikon and even using professional video camera will change to a99/ bought this a99 as their one of their important gear for video/photo use. You just never know how well this a99 can perform in taking photo and in video too! it is so many advantages i can’t list out in one day if want to do so, many industry level people start changing mind on sony after testing it out and see the perform produced by this camera by a99 users. seriously u are just talking on a paper, only if u are really world top level user then im sorry here, a99 is not enough for you.
Frank
5 months ago |The hotshoe on SLT bodies is being brought into line with NEX.
Developing on-sensor AF is important to eventually get rid of the mirror.
You’ll then be left with a mirrorless SLT sized body, once that happens you might as well put an E-mount on it.

5 months ago |I’m disappointed by Sony’s update schedule, there simply isn’t much you can improve on the a57 , nex-f3 and a37 other than changing the hotshoe and the dual phase detect sensor which doesn’t make much difference. The nex7 and a77/a75 is outdated and can’t compete with the top m43 cameras. The Nikon d5200 will kill the a77/a65/a57. Canikon each has 3 full frame models while sony has an awkward positioned a99 that is not really competitive. Sony really needs to provide cameras for pro use.
