(SR4) More than one Sony mirrorless cameras to be announced soon?

I had the chance today to talk with two of my sources. Both sources do really know what Sony will bring next! We were talking about Sony mirrorless system and that’s what I can tell you:

Source ONE:
“The mirrorless product will definitely be Sony’s story for interchangeable lenses this year. Make no mistake. My understanding is that the A230, A330, and A380 will all be going away to be replaced by two cameras. One at the A230 level and one at the A380 level, to give a more distinct step up for the consumer. Having all three was really a bit redundant. For those who were not the biggest fans of the ergonomics of the current lineup, the new cameras will still be nice and small but will get a more standardized grip to work with, likely similar to the Pentax K-x or the Canon Rebel series… but I think Sony is aiming for a bit smaller if they can. No one’s said word one about dates to me but I expect there to be talk about it at PMA, if not something shown for it. Also the rumor about having two mirrorless products has been substantiated by people who truly would know because, frankly, they work that closely with the product. ””

“ I have seen the new Olympus E-PL1 and I can say Sony mirrorless camera will blow that camera away. The Sony camera will have the best from both MFT models EPL1+Panasonic GF1 and with bigger sensor and excellent lenses”

Better than GH1 would be more impresive…

Since I’m interested more on video, I’m now focused on the new Canon 550D. So please Sony, tempt me with your EVIL.

Nope, there will be separate line up for mirror less initially, i believe so. Entry level classic DSLR would be separate from mirror less, may be some of the classic DSLR would be made with pellicle mirror. Thats what I can guess. Lets see…Only time can tell. It would be foolish decision to replace normal DSLR with mirror-less one before studying the consumer market properly. Already Sony faced very bad year (2009) in terms of DSLR selling, now one wrong decision could ruin their business for several years to come. If they are smart enough, they will not remove the classic DSLR unless a major breakthrough achieved by them in technology. Good Luck Sony!!!!

No, more than likely there will be mirrorless as well as replacements for the entry level DSLR. Two lines of product. It would not make sense to replace entry DSLR with mirrorless yet. It’s just not proven.

Yea… I think the same. Mirrorless cameras are unpopular on some countries – eg. in UK or US or Japan you can find them as popular as DSLRs, but eg. in Poland the sale of mirrorless cameras is very close to null, cause people find them to be big compacts, not small DSLR replacement, and therefore think that their “status” is waaay lower than the one of true DSLR.

@Sky – true. Same goes for the US… or the problem is that neither Canon nor Nikon have marketed mirrorless product. With the extraordinary hype machine surrounding the big two, it’s almost impossible for anyone else to make a breakthrough.

The RELATIVE popularity of the Panasonic G series stateside was nothing short of miraculous and goes to show how far the inroads Panasonic has made really have been, as well as the open internet’s acceptance of the brand.

The disparity between the Olympus sales and the Panasonic sales shows how much the internet can effect a buyer’s decision.

I’ve actually worked with people who bought the Panasonic but explain to me that they didn’t buy the Olympus because of the “smaller sensor and the noise.” Which, of course, is asinine since they use the same sensor and have nearly the same processing. Oly just can’t break out of that particular demoncell due to the massive campaign run by some review sites against the 4:3 sensor for so many years.

Consumers in the US are easily herded cattle when it comes to digital cameras, which has never been good for market growth or technological advancement, sadly.

Also it is noted that there hasn’t been a lot of press covering any of the new Sony Cybershot or Handycam product introduced at CES.

I was infuriated by DPReview’s total lack of coverage, including their one slot in the news feed that had a number of typos and incorrect information. Why is that Canon and Nikon get 4-6 different column entries when they announce new point and shoot product (especially Coolpix since they are without question the most mediocre line of DSC on the market today… at least don’t involve the name Kodak) but Sony comes a long with two breakthrough models and even offers SDHC and MSDP compatitbility, on 12 new models… and they get ONE column entry? And a terribly edited one at that?

Tell me they’re not biased. Please. And people look to places like DPReview as a trusted resource.

LMAO they’re almost the Fox News of camera reviews. Whatever Amazon needs to sell…

The thing is that (so I was told by one of Sony team guys) that Sony position in US is very very weak comparing to what it has in Europe. Sony even cannot get a fair chance to advertise itself, as all the spots in photo-magazines or other mass-media are mostly reserved for Canikon already.
That’s why dpreview or US photo magazines don’t care much about Sony point&shoots, but they care a lot about Canon p&s, where Canon is the largest DSLR saler in the US (while in few countries of europe it’s the Nikon who rule, and AFAIK Sony is always the third company in matter of total DSLR sales, and 1st in P&S sales).

So on some markets it’s kinda… unfair fight (not that it’s everywhere else a fair fight, but still).

Besides that – in Japan people also “dislike” Sony DSLRs, no matter if they offer better things than the others or not.

Regarding dpreview and other reviewers in usa and some other countries…they intentionally try to defame Sony product. one of the reasons could be that they do not get much commission from sony compared to CaNikon, although I do not have any proof for this claim, only I guessed from my presence of mind. Here in USA also, all the major retailers (bestbuy, J&R etc) will push you to buy Canikon…what is the reason? there must be something which makes them a Canikon seller. I believe it is money. There is money everywhere, nobody wants to do free business for anyone. Am I wrong? Same is true for reviewer..they definitely get money from the companies and depending upon how much they get…they put their review accordingly.
