(SR5) A minimum of six NEX lenses will be announced this year!

After posting that bad news about the A99 delay I will now cheer you up with a series of good news rumors
The first news is that unlike the original NEX roadmap where Sony showed three NEX lenses coming for 2012 there will be at least six new lenses this year! Sony NEX system success has been bigger than expected (by Sony managers) and they are aware that while the cameras are amazing the lens range is still lacking. That’s why the lens engineers are right now developing many new NEX lenses. You will not only see a new High Quality G standard zoom, wide angle zoom and telephoto lens. There will be pancake and other Zeiss lenses too! I am still collecting the details about the lens specifications. I hope to be able to post them soon. if you can help me with some info drop me a message by using the anonymous contact form on the right sidebar. Every little piece of rumor helps me to avoid mistakes when publishing rumors. Thanks!

2 years ago |For the standard zoom i vote for a 16-80 3.5 4.5.
For the wide angle zoom i wish a 11-23 constant f/4,
And for the mid telephoto a nice 70mm or 90mm f/2 would be more than welcome.
Steve
2 years ago |I’d also like a 16-80 but looking at the lens mock ups that were shown when the road map was released some months back, I’m not that hopeful for anything really tasty. Sony seem to want to maintain a certain exterior look to the e-mount lenses that might constrain their optical design.

2 years ago |It’s interesting to see that the standard zoom is a “G” lens, while the A77 kit lens is not although many users say it’s even better then the Zeiss standard zoom. Does that mean this lens is necessarily better than the A-Mount 16-50 f/2.8?
My guesses are:
12-24 f/4-5.6
24-70 f/2.8-4 (or 16-50 2.8)
35mm f/1.8
85mm f/2 “big” pancake with OSS
100mm f/2.8 OSS macro
zstan
2 years ago |It is not a G to keep the price down.
Poki
2 years ago |It’s actually nearly as expensive as the 70-300mm G lens. Maybe a “G” lens should be build a bit better which would higher the price – but maybe Sony just don’t want to ship a G-lens as a Kit-lens.
Ezio
2 years ago |In the interviews with sony, which was posted on SAR as a link a while back, the A77 kit lens is G grade but for some mysterious internal and high level decision they decided to not market it as a G lens
key word: marketing.
Again however, if you want to detract the whole Label argument (or assurance of quality). You get what you pay for. Thinking about lens purchases in money terms up front rather than the G or Z or L label will actually make a lot more sense as to the quality of the lens that you can expect from it.

This would be the best wide angle zoom they could give us, but I think they’ll go with a 12-24 f/4-5.6 instead to keep the price down. (It’s neither a “G” nor a Zeiss lens, so it should cost less than these…) Also, why put OSS in a super wide lens?
Ezio

Video always works well with extra stabilization (saves the costs on the rigs.)
It is funny that sony doesn’t promote more of their alpha mount line up for Video use… the built in SSS should be promoted a lot more!

2 years ago |There is no benefit to OSS in a lens of a certain size (I can’t remember it exactly but it’s greater than 30mm and less than 50mm). That’s why the SEL24F18Z (24mm Zeiss) has no OSS and the SEL50F18 (50mm Sony) does have OSS.
So no need to call for OSS where it would be pointless.
dts
2 years ago |hope the 35mm f1.8 or f2 has OSS (for video) and is pancakeish
Christopher
2 years ago |Not just for video, but for low-light stills as well…1.8 with no OSS gives no advantage over kit 4.5 with OSS. With OSS, such a lens would be a low-light beast on the 5n.

2 years ago |A good standard zoom with constant aperture (2.8 of course) would be really cool because for video you need constant aperture. But I don’t think this could really compensate the shift of the A99 schedule. Hope Sony give us something which attacks the 1D-x and D4 with a much lower price, than they have something to compete. Sometimes it seems that Sony isn’t taking the image division as a real business – see the time between A700 and A77 release and now the A99.
Ezio
2 years ago |i think in the middle of the chase towards beating Nikon and Canon sony realized they should make new markets rather than trying to kill the elephants.
So that takes years of R&D and innovation to come up with ground breaking technology. The delays are reasonable if you keep this in mind.
Nikon buys sensors, innovates in lenses. Canon keeps on innovating, but neither elephants have radically done any new R&D (with the risk thats involved if it turns out it flops) so they have the time to do more iterations of the same old tech. If you call that business then maybe those companies are more suited to your stock investments
David
2 years ago |That’s exactly what Sony are doing
Canon and Nikon dominate the dSLR market, so Sony go for SLT with the EVF. It’s different, and allows you to have an impressive spec sheet at a much cheaper price.
I really look forward to the a99. 24mp sounds perfect. I basically want an a850 with more modern features – tilty screen, live-view, more AF points etc. But the EVF sounds AMAZING – check white balance and exposure from a histogram before taking the shot. And focus peaking.. sounds fantastic.
Plus the NEX line. You can’t really blame Sony for not innovating. Even the 1dx and d4 are just the improvements you would expect from the previous cameras. I’m sure they’ll be great, but more fps, better high ISO, more AF points.. all predictable. There’s nothing actually NEW there.

2 years ago |For the G lens i think a 16-80mm 2.8-4.5 would be the right choice, because samsung will launch soon a 16-80mm 3.5-4.5 optimized for video… This would be a 18-200 little brother. And remember the sony R1 and its near Aps-C size sensor, it featured a Zeiss 24-120mm f/2.8-4.8 eq lens and the flange back distance was very short. According to some specialist, the rear element was almost in touch with the R1 sensor.
It would be also cool if sony release a R1 styled nex body with weather sealing (G nex lens series could have weather sealing) and the same evf as nex 7 but in the middle, above the optical axis just like a dslr. It could even be a basis for an hybrid Nex/alpha mount camera concept…

On APS-C 24mm = 36mm
Perfect walkaround length imo, and a fast aperture. Coupled with the amazing high ISO of the 5N or 7, I’d be extremely happy if I was a NEX owner.

2 years ago |It is nice to here they are addressing their lens shortcomings. I am hoping to here to news on the delayed 99 camera. I imagine there has to be a prototype out there if they were hoping to release it initially in spring. What are expectations with focusing ability and sensor to be used? My 850 is still serving me well and I still prefer to use over my 5n except when high iso needed, but i just hope my 850 holds up long enough for the release of the 99.
Frank Withers
2 years ago |“except when high iso needed”- the A850 trounces the 5N when you downsize the 24mp image to 16mp, and offers better depth of field, etc… you should really only use your 5N when the portability or video is a requirement. Never think it is actually superior to the FF 850
William Kramer
2 years ago |I’m sure that Sony and all other lens manufacturers try to make the smallest lens’ for the E mount that they can, for a price that people are willing to pay. More people will pay $299 for a larger lens then are willing to pay for a lens half the size for $999, its just a fact of life.
SonyA77
2 years ago |Of course you are assuming that smaller lenses have to cost more, they don’t.
Image quality may suffer on pancakes, but I can live with a little IQ loss in favour of their compactness. If I want top IQ then I’ll buy a bugger lens and sacrifice compactness.
At the moment we have a fantastic compact body with poor overall size when the lens is included. It’s a shame and means that I’ll never buy NEX.

2 years ago |As a A-mount shooter for many years I can’t help to have a little envy of the resources Sony has been putting in its wildly successful little camera and at some point after the dust settles and Sony really ships a few more high quality optics and the rumor of a hybrid is understood I will add the platform into my pool with a NEX-7 and a few lenses.
With the exception of a few “budget lens” It has been several years now since Sony has shipped a new or replacement full frame G or Zeiss lens and negative talk about Sony’s commitment to the full frame continues in the trade press so some of us may be a little stress seeing and hearing about this “other” lens mount and its roadmap.
This could all change and change quickly if or when Sony publishes a A-mount roadmap and stops making excuses and delaying even announcements of when it will make an product announcement.
Would it kill Sony just to have a top manager release a statement telling the industry and its customers that it plans to strongly support the A-mount full frame and will provide a roadmap soon?
This could be why some posters here are a little bitchy about all of the NEX rumor traffic.

2 years ago |A fast telephoto zoom in addition to the “high performance standard zoom” Sony has already promised for this year would be very welcome. While very desirable, I doubt that Sony can make reasonably compact zooms with constant F2.8 apertures that can cover the larger sensor. F2.8-4.0 seems more probable. In the interim, if they don’t announce a fast telephoto lens, I’d be happy with a bright, telephoto prime around 135mm (200mm equivalent).

2 years ago |Yep, we need a dozen new NEX models, all 16-50. And no expansion of the focal length range of NEX. A NEX loses in the consumer world to bridge cameras with effective focal lengths out to 400 or 500 mm plus. Time for Sony to actually expand the focal length range of NEX in longer focal lengths.
BKD
2 years ago |Why compare apples with oranges? (I’m not saying that NEX couldn’t do with a longer focal range, but to compare NEX with bridge cameras is foolish, each has advantages over the other so you could just as easily say that bridges lose out to NEX in other areas.)
NEX’s direct competition are the Olympus PEN and Nikon 1. Only the Olympus has a longer reach. And remember that you can use any of your a-mount lenses on NEX – including, for example, a 600mm G with 2X TC. Enough reach for you?
Carl
2 years ago |That’s simply a matter of sensor size. If they had a sensor the size of a Pentax Q, it’d be relatively straightforward to have 30x zoom lenses or whatever. For an APS sized sensor, such a lens would be unusably massive. The current 18-200mm is about as long a zoom range as is practical.

2 years ago |I own a Nikon, and I am happy with it. But before suggesting it to a newbie, I would try to understand his needs. Now, a vacation + travel camera is a compact or (better) a mirrorless (at the moment m43, but very soon, with a couple of lenses more, the Nex7 + a couple of compact but good zooms).
A portrait or wedding camera is a dslr (could be Nikon or Canon, or even Sony). At that point it depends much more on the lenses, accessories, and to what extent the future owner want to invest into the system and this particular hobby.
If Cody is happy with a couple of “normal” primes (say: a normal, a portrait and a macro) and two-three zooms (a super-wide, a fast normal and a fast tele), any system will be ok.
If Cody wants more, e.g. tilt-shift lenses, exotic lenses, specific primes, large selection of top IQ glass, a wide range of accessories, better support in case he wants to buy top gear, etc., that means Nikon or Canon.
I can offer my experience: I invested in high-amateur Nikon gear (D7000 + 16-85, 70-300 VR, 35/1.8, 50/1.8, 105/2.8 macro, Sigma 10-20) because I thought I would eventually upgrade and buy pro Nikon stuff. But that “eventually” never arrived, and most likely will never arrive, so all in all any other company would suit me just ok (Canon and Sony do have very good alternatives to my gear).
When I start buying 2.8 zooms I will probably change my mind. But a newbie should not think about 2.8 zooms, I think, so I recommend NOT to think about top-notch pro lenses you will never buy…

2 years ago |Hopefully Fuji x-pro 1 lens will trigger knee-jerk reaction and Sony lens guys make decent fast primes. 28/2 35/1.4 or 1.8 are big gap and sorely missed.

2 years ago |I don’t mean to sound like an arse, but why are you shooting a wedding? That’s still a pretty vague list as well. Björn Utpott
2 years ago |While that’s certainly desirable, I don’t know to what degree these road maps can be relied on. Other than putting lenses on the map that are already in development, anything further in the future can and will be influenced by unforeseen factors.
The sales success of a line of cameras can lead to a short term investment surge leading to new lenses that weren’t on the road map – as is the topic of this post. Of course the opposite can be true as well. The success of particular camera bodies will also influence future lens development. If, for example, a high end body like the NEX-7 does unexpectedly well, it is reasonable to assume that there will be more lenses that target that group of users (high end).
There’s also a lot of more factors that can cause road maps to be altered or even thrown overboard. Some of these include the broader economy and what the competition is doing.

2 years ago |I dont care for pancakes. I want quality before design. If Sony is smart, it would notice that the 24mm 1.8 is a highly successful lens because its a 35mm, sharp wide open in the centre and it is not a pancake.
Pancakes may be attractive and small and what not…but seriously…give me a 35mm 1.8 to go with it and even if the same size and weight and price, if performs same or better I would buy it in a heart beat along with a second nex 7.
Honestly, go and see the nex 7 flickr group. How many shots you see there with the meagre 16mm? pancake among the worst lenses for the nex. Mere design, no delivery. Please Sony and Zeiss, I beg, a 35mm and if your heart is big enough for us photojournalists, a 16mm f2/1.8 to go with them too and I will happily lend money to get me that kit.
Best Regards,
