(SR5) A58, NEX-3N, and three A-mount lens to come soon!
Sources from SAR and Digicaminfo got the same info about the upcoming release:
In very last moment it looks like Sony decided to drop the A38 and just release the A58! And this is what Sony will announce soon:
- SLT-A58 with a new 20MP sensor (actually it’s 20,xx and almost close to 21 Megapixels). Priced around 600-700 dollars/euro.
- NEX-3N, 16Megapixel sensor (same as F3) priced at 500-600 dollars/euro
- Zeiss 50mm f/1.4 for 1600-1700 dollars/euro
- 18-55mm II for A mount at around 200-300 dollars/euro
- 70-400G F4.5-5.6 II 2400-2500 dollars/euro (to ship in April!)
And a smart SAR reader found the evidence for the new 70-400mm in the latest firmware: “Looks like SAL-70400G2 is ready for release, fw for a99 contains the lens correction profile for that lens. This profile is identical to the profile for the known SAL-70400G, so no changes in optical formula. LensID is 69, “old” one has LensID 53. No such lens profiles for rumored SAL-70200G2 or announced SAL-50F14Z yet.”
Stay tuned on SAR!

4 months ago |Well, the 50mm 1.4 CZ for Nikon and Canon mount may be cheaper, but it is optically … ehm, not that good. The new 55mm f/1.4 CZ will cost almost 3000, so 1600 for the Sony one with AF is a fair compromise if it’s optically good enough.
A prime lens does NOT have to be a much simpler design than a zoom lens – not at f/1.4 and not if you want almost perfect optical performance.

4 months ago |As far as the 50 f1.4 goes I’ll stick with my Sony branded one (a.k.a. Minolta 50 f1.4 RS re-badged). I mean hey, I own some Zeiss glass; the 24-70 f2.8 SSM, 16-35 f2.8 SSM & the 16-80 f3.5-4.5. However, I bought them at reasonable prices before the Tsunami that hit Japan and screwed them up with their nuclear reactor and all that. Sine then, the prices have gone sky high on the “A” grade stuff. I know Nikon and Canon pulled the same thing, but still. A Canon mount Zeiss 50 f1.4 manual focus lens runs at $725 at B&H Photo Video. Okay, Sony’s has AF. So what? let’s more than double the price? C’mon! It’s a prime lens! Not much going into the optical design compared to the 24-70 f2.8 zoom. It shouldn’t cost more than $1100 max. I’d rather pay $500 for Sigma’s 50 f1.4 EX DG HSM lens.
Sony, you better start rethinking your price strategy and start pricing accordingly as well as have a bit more selection for the Alpha Mount. I’ve been shooting with Minolta and now Sony for many years. We need more variety in lenses at aggressive pricing. Also, dump the plastic mount crap! I know you want to save some manufacturing expense. But really? Plastic is not the solution. Plus, your cheap DT lenses need redesigning simply because they do look cheap.
Also, what about those lenses (and others) that “Simon T” wrote about just prior to me? Those are certainly lenses I’d like to see as non Zeiss options. Maybe “G” lens options, but they don’t have to be.
Chop-Chop Sony! Maybe I should work for you and get your DSLT/DSLR camera department in order!

4 months ago |50mm f1.4 at that price simply won’t fly not with Canon’s 50mm f1.2 L lens at that price point.
Another kit lens? Well wow yawn..
Where is the 85mm f1.8, the 35mm f2 FF lens, the 28mm f2.8, the 24-something non CZ pricey zoom, the 70-210mm f4 new beercan. Nowhere to be seen and this is evidently a camera company?

4 months ago |50/1.4 priced like Canon’s 50/1.2-L … Hmm. This new ZA won’t go to 1.2, so it had better have something else to make it worth the premium price. And no, the blue “Zeiss” label will NOT, in itself, be worth it. I’d better be able to see superior IQ in pictures the lens takes; it needs to beat ALL the other 50/1.4′s out there… and probably, beat them by a substantive margin (I imagine that Sigma’s already planning to raise the price of their 50/1.4HSM… ) .
Of course, even if I *CAN* see the superior IQ, I probably *STILL* won’t buy the ZA50… 50mm isn’t a useful-enough focal length (for me, and my shooting), and f/1.4 doesn’t beat my other glass for low-light, so… this lens doesn’t look like it’s going to have NEARLY $1600 worth of appeal for me. Others MMobviouslyV.

4 months ago |What a boring announcement!! A list of mild upgrades and copies of what they already have. What about some products that would fill real gaps in the lineup?
(*) Wide-angle primes for E-mount/A-mount APS-C: why is there no 16 mm or 20 mm f/2 lens? Not a pancake, but a good performing lens. It should be easier to make and cheaper than full frame lenses at these focal lengths.
(*) 35 mm for A-mount fullframe: there is only one choice from Sony now which does not live up to its price.

4 months ago |That could be a possibility…
For now what I see in LR4 is that noise reduction applied to my brother’s pictures seems to mess up jpeg’s much less than NR applied to A55 pics. I had to use more color noise suppression on my A55, because it had distinctively more pronounced chroma noise.
Frank
4 months ago |Sounds to me like you need to learn how to use LR.
Frank
4 months ago |If you don’t want 24mpix then reduce the size of them to 16mpix. There is very little difference between images from the A55 and images of the same size from the A77.
Stan
4 months ago |I’m not zooming into crops, if thats what you’re assuming… Lots of my pictures are taken in pretty dark areas, such as parties with insufficient lighting. My biggest problem with my A55 was the noise that it produced. Yes, it outclassed all point and shoots, cellphones and other cameras in a lower class, but if it had higher usable low noise ISO, like my brother’s Nikon D5100 @ ~1200, I’d be much happier. I would’ve bought a D5200, but i just don’t like their menu system. For some reason it seems weird to me. I’ve just recently sold my A55, while it still had value and i’m pretty much ready for a next gen camera. If sony dropped SLT and shoved PDAF on sensor into a new camera, it’d be a perfect camera for me. And please don’t mention NEX-5R. Last thing i need is adapters to use my lenses and a tiny camera body.
dgrano20
4 months ago |According to three online review websites including DXOmark, Nikon’s D5200 sensor soundly beats all Sony cropped bodies in overall IQ. The same for D3200 D600 and especially D800. I care nothing for video and am all about image quality and currently Nikon is dominating in that regard. I prefer Sony’s body design especially with EVF and hope Sony will surpass Nikon with the next line of bodies and please no more SLT I understand the benefit but it along with AAfilter make fine details all smudgy like a point and shoot.
RickJ
4 months ago |Relax Stan, some people are happy actually taking pictures with their A65/A77′s and not just zooming into crops all day to compare pixels.
Stan
4 months ago |An “almost” 21mp sensor. And here I was hoping for a next generation 16mp. I hope it will not be another round of A65/A77 noisy mess. They can’t possibly make a camera that has worse ISO performance than a previous generation, can they?
Peksu
4 months ago |DxOMark takes that into account and says the sensor performance of E-M5 in virtually identical to the sonys.
I don’t wan more pixels per se, but if they have kept the per-pixel performance the same (or even improved), I don’t mind gradually going up. Sony 24MPix sensor sacrificed some per-pixel performance for resolution, I’m hoping the new one is on par with the latest m4/3s and beats them by about a stop.
Wheelus
4 months ago |Lenses are not just about optics these days. They contain electronics such as auto focus motors and communicate with the camera body and flash. The new Sigmas have that “thingy” that you attach to lens to allow for firmware updates. Old film cameras and lenses still take great photographs, but photographers today want their cameras and lenses to do everything for them, so they are more complex which means more money. In the old film days, you never heard of lenses and cameras that were weather sealed. Now everyone wants equipment that they can use to take photographs in a tornado. Again, more money.

Again – 50 f/1.4 are cheapest full frame lenses on a market.
So seeing 1500$ price tag on something like that surely makes people astonished. It’s like if you’d release 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 for 2000$ – even if it’d be Zeiss people would be astonished to see such a price tag on a lens like that.

4 months ago |More and more Sony bodies – does the NEX line have more bodies than lenses now? Not counting ‘adapted’ lenses of course.
Also the 70-400 price is highway robbery – no reason that lens should cost that much – it doesn’t even have IS built-in! Yes I realize Alpha bodies have a mediocre form of IS built in, but it’s far less effective than in-lens IS. I had a Sigma OS 70-200 that was far better disabling the in-body IS and using the lens IS. Just sayin’. Sony gets you coming and going.

4 months ago |Looked up a few price comparison. Zeiss lenses versus Sony Zeiss. All the Zeiss are manual focus and are the Nikon mount price. B&H list price, no discounts
24mm Sony Zeiss f/2 $1,400
25mm Zeiss f/2 $1,700
85mm Sony Zeiss f/1.4 $1,700
85mm Zeiss f/1.4 $1,283
135mm Sony Zeiss f/1.8 $1,800
135mm Zeiss f/2 $2,122
Sometimes the Sony is a little cheaper sometimes a little more. Biggest difference is the 85mm the Sony is $417 more or 32% more. If this held for the 50mm it would place the Sony at $990. The Sony135 f/1.4 is a nice lens but not weather sealed which might add a few hundred more. So $1,200 to $1,300 would be considered reasonable to me, and the price may drop to that level after it has been out a while.
Almazar80

4 months ago |Let’s make a simple calculation now. Let’s assume that Zeiss 50mm f/1.4 is $1.599.
Sigma 50mm f/1.4 = $449
Sigma 35mm f/1.4 = $899
Total = $1.348
$1.599 – $1.348 = $251
Now you can go and get a couple of UV and polarizer filters too, for your new Sigma’s. Did you get my point?
Rob
4 months ago |Which Nikon model will have the new 20 megapixel sensor before Sony releases it?
Almazar80
4 months ago |You are right about the Sigma. My bad. On the other hand, the Sony is stall available (50mm f1.4) at a reasonable price. For some reason, those Zeiss lenses that people covet cost a lot of money (it’s been true for a while now).
Bill
4 months ago |Not sure how well it is going to sell at the listed price. The most expensive 50mm f/1.4 at B&H right now is the Zeiss Planar T* Manual focus for Canon and Nikon at $725. The new lens has auto focus, weather sealing, and I would expect be produced in smaller quantities, which increases the price a bit. But double the price does seem extreme. For more budget sensitive, the Sigma and Sony lenses are available for $450 and $423. Of course if the new lens can out resolve a 54 MP FF sensor, it could be worth every penny to those who may be shooting such cameras in a few years.
Kursad Sezgin

4 months ago |I just got my Sigma 50mm f/1.4 for ~$445 from B&H and it’s a very good piece of glass. Calculation is simple: Sigma 50mm + Sigma 35mm = 445+900=$1.335 which is still 200usd cheaper than Carl Zeiss 50mm f1.4. I’d buy 2 UV filters with this additional bucks

4 months ago |I “was” looking forward to upgrading my 70-400, but it looks like it’ll cost me close to a grand after I sell my current one. I’m suspicious of the claim made here that the new lens will have the same optic profile, and that it will now be slower (that could have just been a typo).
The 70-400 has terrible bokeh and for that reason alone I would want to upgrade to an improved version. Weather sealing would also be hugely important in a lens primarily intended for outdoor wildlife or sports photography. I don’t care about the silver color, they can change it or keep it, doesn’t matter to me. Just fix my bokeh and seal the lens and I’ll be putting my current one on ebay and snatching up a new one.

would the new A58 sensor be put into the next NEX 5 series?
Thanks
Spuds
4 months ago |Point is the amount of labor in both lenses is about the same to build one, not much difference in parts either. Bottom line is marketing hype. With the advent of photoshop and software to correct for distortion these hyper pricey lenses are a joke.
Gabriel
4 months ago |The 20mpx si for the A58, and metabones is for the Nex series, not the A series.
Gabriel
4 months ago |The 50 mm is a Zeiss, it’s the same difference between mass market car and a Rolls
Emir
4 months ago |According to Sonys website http://www.sony.se/product/ddl-sony-g-lenses/sal-70400g it is 4.0, therefore it seems V.E.R.Y. odd to have 4.5 now… if it is the same optical formula.
Admin – is it really 4.5?
LensIsAll
4 months ago |Might be that they changed an optical formula to make it sharper wide open? Hence f/4.5 ?
Mistral75
4 months ago |No, it does not. 70-300G does.
LensIsAll
4 months ago |Current Canon 50 f/1.4: 400$. Current Canon 35 f/1.4: 1200$.
You see – prices of 50s and 35s don’t have anything to deal with themselves.
Mistral75
4 months ago |70-400mm f/4.5-5.6 OR f/4-5.6 as the current one?
Almazar80
4 months ago |People complained that there are too many bodies in the SLT range. Sony may be simplifying a bit. And people still complain. Can we wait for the actual products and prices to come out and then complain?
Almazar80
4 months ago |Umm, the current 70-400G starts at f4.5.
Almazar80
4 months ago |The Sigma Art 35mm f1.4 is listed at $1400 U.S. That’s a third party lens. People wanted fast high quality primes. They’re getting it. Not selling for what you think they should be? Well, the pros who need them will buy them. For the rest of us, the current Sony and Minolta lenses still work quite well.
LensIsAll
4 months ago |In did. If it makes current 70-400 go down in price I’d take it in a heartbeat.
LensIsAll
4 months ago |Only it’s not fully metal, silvery-ring lens alike 35 f/1.4 Zeiss, which goes for the same price. So I hardly call it justified. Especially when 35 f/1.4 is impact resistant and got by far more complicated optical design.
LensIsAll
4 months ago |Same here. 1000$ would be absolute maximum I can pay, but 1500? It’s like asking yourself to go bankrupt.
And then Sony will complain that the pro-gear doesn’t sell.
Idiots.
LensIsAll
4 months ago |F/1.2 is an unique lens unavailable in other systems. Hence the uber-high prize. Zeiss is nothing alike!
Frank
4 months ago |It was already sharp at 400mm f5.6, I’d get the current version. Might be interesting to see what used prices end up like.
LensIsAll
4 months ago |I don’t know to be honest. But I’m quite sure it won’t be pancake.
What might be changed or improved in 18-55? It’s a kit lens, so I have bit of a trouble trying to figure out what they can improve without raising a price by a significant margin. New optical design might be required for high-resolution sensors, but other then that? No idea really. I’d love to see weather sealing or SAM II (like in 18-135 – silent), or best: both!
LensIsAll
4 months ago |Especially when 70-400 was already quite amazing lens in terms of optical design.
andrew
4 months ago |Great news! Really good to see Sony’s still investing in the a-mount. Price is on the steep end, but at the end of the day it’s a Zeiss…
Peksu
4 months ago |I’m very glad they are finally coming up with a new aps-c-censor, the performance has been stuck for too long. Even m4/3 has cought up. NEX-3N will be the third generation of cameras with the same sensor, except for the phase detection pixels. If they have improved the sensor nicely and use it for the new generations NEXes, I’ll probably have to upgrade. 20 megapixels sounds just right too!
dro
4 months ago |so we gonna see this next gen 20mp sensor in a NEX this year:) maybe nex 7X? or even NEX 5X/6X.. cant wait for the DXO results of this sensor!

4 months ago |Andrea release date for CZ 50mm?
Frank
4 months ago |…and then the A59 will be announced and you’ll wait for that.
Frank
4 months ago |I have the A700 and A77 and don’t experience long exposure problems on either.
JiM
4 months ago |Or do not upgrade A700. It’s still the best. For night photography SLTs are crappy like NEXes, they got hot and noisy very soon. I’ve even sold A580 as it wasn’t that good as A700 for longer exposures and got horrible blinks from city lights that A700 never does.
olala
4 months ago |I was JUST about to go for the A57 as an upgrade to my A55…so I guess I will have to wait just a little longer….
WTH
4 months ago |Well, this is a nice surprise!
I normally find out about Sonys new sensor technology from Nikons product announcements…
Carl
4 months ago |I’ve been considering buying the 70-400II, but whoa that price. I think for most of us just buying the current model (or better yet a closeout special for the current model) and a rain jacket for it makes much more sense financially.
John Maverick
4 months ago |Canon EF 50/1.2 is $1,619.00 at B&H and it’s a less complicated lens albeit a half stop faster.

4 months ago |Don’t Panic People, Next year Sony will release the
A55H0L3 – point and shoot!
Emir
4 months ago |How can the 70-400 have the same optical formula as the old lens, when it has f4.5 instead of f4? … Seems strange to make the lens slower and charge that huge ammount… :S
kalpurush :)
4 months ago |Don’t think a58 is a replacement of a65! There will be one a66 my guess. May be in 2014.
Syl
4 months ago |Andrea, any details about the new 18-55? better af ? build construction?
kalpurush :)
4 months ago |Well, wanted to buy the CZ 50mm 1.4 lens, but seems too pricy for me.
Well, bad luck for me!(:
Frank
4 months ago |SAR have said that next years FF isn’t SLT, Sony are concentrating on a NEX FF.
Frank
4 months ago |Get a used A77 instead.
James
4 months ago |Cool rumors! I *suspect* the A58 is replacing both the A57 and A65 (as there’s no A66 rumors flying around). If so, the A58 will probably get the good EVF from the A65/A77 – I really can’t see Sony continuing to sell ‘old’ EVF tech in the mid-range cameras for another 18 months. And if if if so, it could be the reasonably-priced upgrade from my A700 I have been waiting for. Yey!
albhui
4 months ago |Sony’s pricing is going all crazy! At this rate, people will turn to Sigma. Sigma seem to have improved their optical and build quality in their recent lens and still managing to sell them at reasonable price. The Sigma 35mm f1.4 is well received.
The yens are coming down and I would think their selling price should also come down!
andy
4 months ago |1600 $ for a 50 , crazy , I’ll just buy the sigma 35mm 1.4 and call it a day…
xspider
4 months ago |I don’t know why people complain about the price of the zeiss. It’s half the price of the 55mm 1,4 Distagon version for Nikon and it has auto focus, SSM to be more specific! It’s a steal
Rurik
4 months ago |Andrea, how about OVF rumors? Any chance for A580 mark II?
BMan
4 months ago |Interesting.
The cameras sound nice.
The lenses sound nice.
The camera prices sound nice.
The lens prices sound insane.

4 months ago |Early it was mentioned, in white. Are you sure?
TomiZG
4 months ago |Exactly, LOL. What does it do, you get 4 Sigmas 50 1.4 and they are not behind the Zeiss, no way the Zeiss can be so much better to justify such a ridiculous price.
If it was an 85 1.2 I would pay 1700 Euro. Yes. But this is just funny.
AK-77
4 months ago |Is the 70-400mm freaking gold plated to justify the price tag???
Frank
4 months ago |Dropped the A38 or delayed it?

4 months ago |it comes in black with weather sealing.

4 months ago |Prices way too high for both of these lenses. 50mm should be max $1000 dollars.

DiBok
4 months ago |In Germany the delta between 200 and 400 was always 300 to 400 €. So you can imagine what the price for the 70200G2 will be – 2899 or 2999…
And if it is also with an unmodified optical formula, forget it..
DiBok
4 months ago |Agree on the 70400G2
Comparing that to Canon with last years renewal of the 2470L2, they started with store prices at 2299€ here in Germany. Now a few month later it is at 1899€.
Presumably the same will happen to the 70400G2. Paying 700-800€ (current retail price is 1699€) for a weather sealing is more than ridiculous.
I would rate it fair if the optical formula would be prepared for upcoming sensors.

4 months ago |20mp sensor is perfect with the advent of the Metabones’ SpeedBooster. Are they conspiring?

4 months ago |And come to think of it.. If the 70-400 G II is going at this price.. i cant imagine how much the 70-200 G II would gonna cost..

4 months ago |Price for 50mm sounds legit tho alittle high.. maybe 1500 MAX i would say..
However price for new 70-400..thats very high. oh dear..
No FF this year. Then new SLT FF in 2014? Sounds OK to me..no need so many anyway..A99 is fine.

4 months ago |So, i’m really wondering about kit II, just because i saw at sonystore they put about half-a-year ago a badge “NEW” to the kit, and the only diference i saw – just a bit another plastic finish on it.

4 months ago |And no FF for 2013? Just one SLT FF…fail Sony.
And double fail on 70-400 II price. That is insane.

RDoe

4 months ago |Wanted to by the A57. I hope now that A58 gets releases soon!

4 months ago |Very exciting. With my warranty for A55 instead of repair they replace with current model. Is it wrong to hope something happens to A55 when this is released? Haha
Looking forward to more info and in particular the A78 which is looking more real every week.
