(SR5) A77 comment by sources

And here are two more A77 reports coming from two sources:
Source_1: I can confirm the A77 pictures are real – they match the unit I’m holding in my hands now. FYI, the 16-50 is a mixed metal/plastic lens, like the CZ 24-70. Autofocus is as fast and quiet as the 24-70. As for the D-range button, the buttons on the A77 are massively customizable, you can assign a different function to each! And the smart teleconverter can be switched to a 100% live view magnification.
Source_2: I am just looking at a few pics taken with the CZ 24-70 and the new sensor. So crispy it tears our eyes out plus a bit of moire…now we know why those expensive lenses are are there
With 24 Megapixel the pictures also look more “wide eyed” and “deeper”.

10 months ago |Any word if the a77 will sport the handy Peaking Focus utility found on NEX system? That would certainly help to unify the shooting aesthetic between camera lines.
As well, is Peaking available only the the OLED rear panel, or will it be functional within the EVF as well? Surely the EVF of both systems will support Peaking focus… Surely it will… won’t it?
Mike
10 months ago |Yes it will, in both.
hanugro
10 months ago |This is THE feature that might convince ppl to dump OVF in favor of EVF. I never use/try it but I imagine it will be very nice with my manual focus 135STF and SSM lenses when you can do DMF to tweak focus.
I hope Sony low end FF release next year has this feature as well.
Mike
10 months ago |Peaking works great with the STF. What joy!
hanugro
10 months ago |Yes couldn’t wait to play with it. But I have to choose between A77 now or hoping Sony release cheaper version of FF dSLT next year.
Or, I can buy A77 and sell my KM5D, A550, and bunch of kit lenses to buy FF body next year.
Bignabo
10 months ago |No, focus peaking is only for contrast detect systems. It’s not necessary, though, with very high res EVF and LCD and 100%live view magnification
TypeZeiss
10 months ago |pardon my ignorance but what exactly is the “peaking focus utility”?
Mike
10 months ago |Check the NEX-C3 reviews. Peaking is extensively discussed there and on many youtube videos. Try a search for “NEX peaking”.
Clyde
10 months ago |Is this the first camera in history with a fully functional “?” button…? That must be how we access the custom 3rd party App Store… right?

10 months ago |Do we have a time and location for the announcement?
Mike
10 months ago |Yes, mentioned many many many times. Are you new to the site? You haven’t read the many other posts?
Garreth
10 months ago |Let’s assume two things. First that I am and second that you’re not an ass. Care to show me just one of the many many many times that the time was given?
hanugro
10 months ago |Just wait 2 more days. That is the rumoured date.
Mike
10 months ago |Well, the date was always given as the 24th. The time would be Japan time, probably timed to be in line with around midnight EST.
Garreth
10 months ago |So you don’t actually have the time or the location?
So your sarcastic response to my question was unnecessary?
Mike
10 months ago |@Garreth: Location will be Japan, same as always. Time is known to some people, but what I told you earlier should already tell you what time it will be.
Juan
10 months ago |@Mike, Are you* new to this site? He’s right. You’re sarcasm makes you looks silly.
The date was changed a couple of times, and the event, as the administrator has already said, will be in greece on the 24th.
I hope that helps, Garreth.
Mike
10 months ago |@Juan: Wanna bet it will be in Japan first? Especially with the timezone differences?

Dennis
10 months ago |@Mike: Thanks for your posts, you seem to know more than we do… It’s great to know that A77 has peaking! Can I safely assume that since peaking is there, A77 should also have an optional contrast based AF system? That would be awesome when shooting without semitransparent mirror in the way. (I hope it’s easily removable…)
Mike
10 months ago |Actually, no CDAF that I’ve found so far. But peaking. The A580 had both systems, so it seems Sony is using peaking for manual focus only, but using the same live view analysis for peaking from the NEX series. Remember, in the NEX, peaking is mainly for full MF – no reason the same logic and algorithms could not be used on the A77.
Dennis
10 months ago |Thanks for your answer! No CDAF is a pity, I thought it should be easy to implement when contrast detection is implemented already (and you have a fast processor at hand).
The size of the A77 is also still a miracle… It’s supposed to be 680g, but we don’t know whether that’s with or without battery. What do you think? Is is 100g or just 10g lighter than A700? And does A77 feel bigger or smaller than A700?
Thanks again!
Mike
10 months ago |I’d say it feels lighter than an A700, but about the same size, except for the prism housing area.
monkeyfacemcbride
10 months ago |No CDAF, that scuppers something on my secret wishlist…may have to do something about that.
rawmeyn
10 months ago |can we use peaking while filming? (sure all manual)
Mike
10 months ago |Yup! When you’re in MF, peaking is automatically turned on and is available while filming.

10 months ago |Hi Mike,
coming from the other place where I asked about the IQ of the A77. You wrote to wait two more days…You seem to know more than we do. So my question is: why waiting two more days if you had (or have?) it in your hands? You do have experience about the IQ of the A77, don’ t you?
Stewe
10 months ago |Well, bro, do you know something about nda? If his sources said him to be quiet two more days then he will.
Mike
10 months ago |Like I said in the other post, NDAs are very specific and strict. And if I did hypothetically speaking actually have such a camera, I may be comparing to other cameras I have, and could not disclose any image details until the final FW.

10 months ago |@Mike: Thanks for your information
I just want to know, does A77 have pixel binning?
Mike
10 months ago |Not that I know of.
Sandro
10 months ago |I know what pics have nothing to do with videos, but the word “moiré” doesn’t look promising
saiman
10 months ago |LOL… i think it’s a typo. Admin, can you confirm?
Maybe “more” ?
Werner Ruotsalainen
10 months ago |If he indeed meant “moire” and not “more”, it means it has a weak anti-aliasing filter, just like, say, the Oly EP series. IMHO, that’s great news… And you can, more or less, filter out moire in PP or, with videos, for example, external moire filters like that of Caprock . Yeah, I know the latter can’t be used over the entire zoom range (at least on the 7D) – see http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?200980-Caprock-Anti-Moire-Filters-Tested-on-the-7D . And there’s also hope the A77 does real pixel binning in video mode, which means absolutely no moire, not even with a weak (photo-optimized) AA filter.
hanugro
10 months ago |source_2 “plus a bit of moire” That is worrying, I really hate Nikon when my relatives wedding photographer gives me my pict with ugly moire in my suite few years ago.
Carl
10 months ago |Moire should be removed by low pass filtering the image in post. It sounds like your problem was more a case of laziness by the photographer than flaws in the camera.
Pacman
10 months ago |I agree.
hanugro
10 months ago |But he shoot JPG. As I am not a core member of the family he might not bother to fix it or shoot RAW. All few pics that he took had moire in around my suit lower pocket. Darn I even give him some tip for taking the pics and I can’t print it because of the moire.
But you said it is fixable? I use to shoot with Nikon (film and small sensor coolpix) before moving to dSLR with KM. But I never encounter moire that bad. Could you elaborate more on how to fix it (maybe in photoshop or lightroom)?
Mike
10 months ago |No CDAF… what a pity. Hello again, backfocus issues!
Mike
10 months ago |You always have backfocus issues? I’ve never had them.
Mike
10 months ago |Backfocus is just one of the reasons I would like CDAF. The main reason is another one:
I actually am able to manually focus much more accurately than the AF (in live-view with 14x magnification).
Cleary, the PDAF is not able to deliver such accuracy. Hence, I would like CDAF for situations where maximum accuracy is desired.
Nikon offers this feature (called the “tripod mode”).
It would cost Sony next to nothing to implement it, hence I cannot understand why they don’t do it.
Mike
10 months ago |It may be there, maybe we’ve just not have stumbled upon it. Or it may just be coming in final firmware.

Werner Ruotsalainen
10 months ago |You can also use the Micro AF tuning to fine-tune your lens even without CDAF…
Mike
10 months ago |I know, but that has certain drawbacks as well. CDAF is inherently more accurate than PDAF, albeit slower. Still, for some applications CDAF is desirable.
zstan
10 months ago |Lens micro-adjustments exists in this camera for a reason.
Carl
10 months ago |Micro adjustment isn’t a panacea for focus issues, though. Lenses can back focus at some focal lengths and distances, and front focus at others, but MFA only allows one global adjustment per lens.
Nikko
10 months ago |i am so excited about the a77

KingRenas
10 months ago |Well the source said “So crispy it tears our eyes out”, I don’t know about that yet but certainly it will tears my eyes out when my pocket gets empty.
Werner Ruotsalainen
10 months ago |If the moire remark isn’t a typo, then, it’s understandable the CMOS has great resolution – the AA filter has been made very weak to allow for as high an effective resolution as possible.
lock
10 months ago |Well, this explains why it tears your eyes out. But on the other hand, it does look like the AA filter is a bit too weak than. Not my favorite balance as I hate that anti moire software.

10 months ago |Even thought SLT mean cost less. i got strong feel the price will be higher and i might not able to buy in this year, if body alone >1200 lol…
Werner Ruotsalainen
10 months ago |Well, if you take into account that, for anything else out there (Canon, Nikon, Oly, Pana, other Sonys) all kit lens start at 28mm AND the vast majority of them are pretty mediocre IQ-wise and in no way bright, if Sony does deliver high IQ with the 16-50, you won’t need to purchase another street / generic / bright (U)WA lens. At least this is why I’m planning to buy this camera – no need to buy another wider / brighter lens at all.
And for the other goodies – GPS / compass (VERY important feature for a travel / all-in-one camera!), weather sealing, 24 Mpixels etc. – too, of course.
bobby
10 months ago |i cant wait! its time i upgraded my wonderful 7D..and no, not the canon…the ORIGINAL KM7D!!
my cz24-70 will love a new body
Jordan Marks
10 months ago |a77 Body only will be $1399 (USD) NOT 1k or $1200 like everyone is pretending.
Don’t be fooled. Besides, $1399 is GOOD – Sony will make the camera seem pro and steal sales from Canon and Nikon.
Zaph
10 months ago |“seem pro”?
What in particular about the camera limits it to only seeming pro, and not be able to be used by a photographer on a paid job? Or just a misunderstanding?
Mike
10 months ago |I think what he’s saying is that there’s a psychological aspect to pricing – higher priced would be “more professional” and thus appeal to people in the market for a semi-pro/pro body. Too cheap and it gets relegated to entry-level.
Carl
10 months ago |It’s possible to look pro for pretty cheap. Just buy the cheapest white telephoto you can find, and hook your (ideally potato-masher style) flashes up with long coiled sync cables and a big diffuser. As far as the general public is concerned, you’ll look like a pro, irrespective of how basic your camera is or how lacking your photography skills are.
Zaph
10 months ago |Ah, yep, you are likely right Mike.
Juan
10 months ago |I would love to here how this new 16-50 2.8 lens compares to the cz 24-70 on the A77. Being an apsc camera, i fancy the 16mm side.
And I’m surprised these sources talked about the image quuility with the CZ lens and not the new Sony.
sgts
10 months ago |hmmmm, any word on the ghosting issue ?
that’s pretty much a pro dealbreaker right there.
Also folks, im hearing in terms of pricing Sony are going to follow Sigma’s barnstorming pricing policy.
David
10 months ago |Really? On the a55, it was there if you really knew what to look for and if you really knew where to look. And only in some circumstances.
I’d say it’s a minor issue, at best.
And thanks Mike for your input.

10 months ago |That’s a very nice comparison…the A77 EVF looks like if might be very nice – certainly a significantly different experience to the A55 by the look of it from these shots.

10 months ago |Do we have any idea yet about what type of flash control the a77 has?

To minimize moiré, look for a raw converter with LMMSE demosaic algorithm.
This one have http://code.google.com/p/photivo/
or the ones based in the LibRaw http://www.libraw.org/ like http://darktable.sourceforge.net/
obvious they will be needed to be upgraded to support the A77/NEX7.
