(SR5) A99 with clean HDmi out!
Sony A77 Clean HDMI Output Test from Dave Dugdale on Vimeo.
Short update about the A99. Unlike the current Sony A77 (See video on top) the A99 will have a “clean” Hdmi output. You will be able to on/off the menu info on the HDmi video. It’s a little but very important feature for filmmakers. What I don’t know yet is the compression format of the HDmi streaming.
Stay tuned! And keep in mind that Sony will announce all that super nice stuff next week on Wednesday (European time).

^^^ will Sony announce the 50mm/1.2 CZ lens on the 12th?
That’s the only nice stuff I am waiting for…

9 months ago |Great, this can be a really huge selling point for some people… totally unimportant for me though. I’d find headphones jack more useful then this feature. But – those who wanted it: enjoy!

9 months ago |Hopefully it has one too. Crossing fingers!

9 months ago |Great but the camera will still be too expensive for me. If the Nikon D600 is $1500 I get that one.
Sky_walker
9 months ago |It’ll be for many people, no doubt. It it’s the same with D3200 comparing to A77 – yea, Alpha is superb in every aspect (but ISO) and got loads of amazing features that make photography a pleasure, but still D3200 sells BY FAR better.
Nikon sticker and low price make a good selling point regardless of what camera is actually capable.

9 months ago |I thin the bigger Problem on the A77 is the very very unprecise AF… That and terrible Noise even at ISO 100…
Frank
9 months ago |What terrible noise a ISO 100?
WRvS
9 months ago |Do you own an A77? Its AF is the fastest around! And have you actually seen its output?
I guess you are just trolling around aren’t you?
Sky_walker
9 months ago |Unprecise AF? Terrible noise at ISO 100? You certainly never used A77. It got the best AF system so far in A-mount cameras, and shots at ISO100 are brilliant. No idea why would you complain.

9 months ago |Sounds great I suppose. I guess I’m just old fashion as I keep reading about all the stuff this thing will do, except for taking photos. Still, I’m really looking forward to it and I’m considering to buy one, although the price comparison to the D800 does give me pause.

9 months ago |I think we’re at the point where on the photography side cameras now tend to have minor incremental improvements, the big stuff has all been done. When it comes to photography most DSLR/Ts are capable of pretty much anything you want to do and there isn’t much to chose between those in a similar price bracket, a few AF points here, another fps or two there and thats about it. Many thousands of superb iconic photos were taken with far less capable camera bodies than those we consider “entry level” nowadays. The headline grabbers are on the video side now which is why you hear more about it.

9 months ago |If you can’t improve image quality, you can always improve usability. Like user-definable upper and lower limits not only for auto-ISO, but also for automatic shutter speed and F-stop. Or put the three individual MR sets back on the mode dial like the A900 had, so that you can switch between them directly without going into the menu. Or make *all* buttons customizable, not only a few. Enable the IR remote to start video recording or an auto-HDR capture.
Today’s cameras are still far from perfection. The only problem is that usability can’t be measured on a bench, you need to listen to the feedback from actual users in the field.
Steve
9 months ago |Yes, but can it take still pictures that equal the d800 in image quality and ISO performance?
shamb
9 months ago |It doesnt seem much of a stretch to allow clean HD out on the A77, as it already ‘almost’ does it: just get rid of the A77 ui elements.
If the A99 does it, there’s no longer any reason to hobble the A77 on clean HD out (as they don’t compete).
grizzler
9 months ago |not quite, the A77 HDMI output while recording is also downsized as well. It needs to output the full 1080p from the sensor, full screen with no clutter and preferably 4:2:2 or better. But yes, it should be do-able on the A77, perhaps this is part of the rumored october FW upgrade (wishful thinking perhaps!)
Hellven
9 months ago |i think they are delaying the A77 firmware to let the A99 to shine, i think the A77 new/rumored firmware will be a good one (not just picture style etc…)
SS
9 months ago |A77 doesnt downsize the the full 24 megapixels from the sensor to 2 megapixels of 1080p. Infact like other DSLR it line skips and read only 1920 x 1080 pixels from sensor.further subsampling of color 4:2:2.
That is why video noise is higher when you compare one frame from 24p video grab to downsampled still image at same iso for 1/24 s shutter speed.
Sony should provide full sensor sampling for video first !!!!!!

9 months ago |It sounds like this HDMI is a good and necessary thing. Therefore, I am glad it is there. However, it appears that we will not get any early reports on what kind of images we are going to expect out of this camera. I am hoping this FF performs better better than its predecesors in the high iso category. I am excited but guarded with the upcoming focusing system. My first and foremost concern is with the quality and performance in the stills arena. I for one cannot wait for the official announcement.
Rick
9 months ago |Too much complaining about the focus on video – if this camera is going to break the CaNikon duopoly in the FF world – it needs to break the mold. If this camera doesn’t sell we may never see another Sony FF DSLR. Given the performance of the Olympus EM5, I have no doubts the new FF sensor will be stellar – and much better noise levels than the D800 because of the lower pixel density. This camera will be the low light king and likely cleaner than the 5d3.
Sony’s sensors have gone to another level, the stills from this camera will be spectacular.
Sky_walker
9 months ago |Why each time Sony releases FF camera there’s someone telling us that “if this camera doesn’t sell we may never see another Sony FF DSLR” ???
bloodsucker
9 months ago |you mean twice only?
Rick
9 months ago |Sony is losing large amounts of cash and shedding poor selling products and money losing divisions, if the camera bombs its not likely to receive a lot of attention or future upgrades. The big concern with many is the long term viability of the FF Sony line and investing in Alpha lenses, that’s not an issue with CaNikon as they’ll always produce multiple FF cameras. I’m considering the A99, but if it gets abandoned like the A850/900, I’ll never buy another Sony DLSR again.
Dulaney Ward
9 months ago |I do think that Sony wants this camera to sell well, and that Sony must use the ace up its sleeve, video, to create a breakthrough, but I disagree with your assessment of the camera as make or break camera for FF. Sony has made a long-term commitment to its imaging division, which is making money, and will not waste this effort by abandoning FF if its first FF DSLT doesn’t sell like hotcakes. Sony is into FF whole hog.
Yhough I suspect that the camera will in fact sell pretty well.
Furthermore, I don’t see anything that indicates that Sony abandoned the A900 / 850. Those cameras were not expected to overwhelm Canikon, but to be something in the nature of shots across the Canikon bows. And Sony is introducing the A99 four years after the introduction of the A900, not too far off in timing between cameras from Canikon’s FF cameras, which averages about three and a half years.
Finally, Nikon has most certainly not “always” been offering FF dslrs–just in the last five years, beginning with the D3. And Canon just this year has abandoned the smaller-than-FF sensor size of its 1D series. Though certainly Canon has been producing FF dslrs for ten years now, and they dominate the dslr market–and the 5D MkIII is the main target for the A99.

9 months ago |Video is a key component to any good DLSR that is sold nowadays. Stabilization, uncompressed and clean HDMI output (please), audio level controls (please), fast and accurate AF – this has the potential to change the DSLR game. And let’s see if Nikon actually release a $1500 full frame.
Atlasman
9 months ago |So long as the video isn’t crippled in the name of protecting higher end products.
Rick
9 months ago |Agreed. Load it up and I’ll buy in, don’t strip it down and I’ll pass. Please enable steadyshot with legacy glass as well.
Steadyshot, new Sony FF sensor, great AF specs and so on, really looking forward to this camera.
David DeBar
9 months ago |Rick, I don’t understand what you mean by the “abandoned” A850/A900?
True they have moved on and no longer make these models, but as a long time A900 owner, I do not feel “abandoned”. I have a vast range of wonderful Alpha lenses that I currently use on my A900 and hope to soon have the option to use them on improved full frame cameras should I choose to buy one.
Dulaney Ward
9 months ago |Exactly.

9 months ago |There is NO compression on the HDMI output (this is the beauty of it) as is designed to go directly to TV. So you get the RAW uncomprssed video stream. How do you record it it’s another story, usualy the device you use will need to do it’s on the fly compression, because of the bandwith required to store the uncompresse stream is quite high, but if you are a pro videographer and have the packet for it you may be able to record the uncompressed stream also.
Tom S
9 months ago |You use something like blackmagicdesign hyperdeck shuttle, which is a little device that you put a SSD drive into. It can do uncompressed, or actually compress to DNxHD on the fly.
There can still be limitations on bit output (8 or 10?) and colorspace (4:2:0? 4:2:2?) etc which may limit usability, and finally, if it actually does an intelligent downsize of 24mpix to 1080p, or if it just picks every few pixels, or does a shoddy job at it.
We’ll have to wait and see.
Ingmar Rieger
9 months ago |As “Tom S” wrote the term uncompressed is a bit awkward. 8 Bit HDMI with 4:2:0 wouldn’t be as compressed as AVCHD but it is miles away from uncompressed video as I would understand it. But real uncompressed video with the Bitdepth the sensor is working with (afaik 14 Bit) would be a huge amount of data (and not compatible with HDMI standards)…
I’m sure Sony isn’t fighting their own video unit with the DSLRs (as they aren’t with the NEX-VG series) so I wouldn’t expect too much.

9 months ago |HDMI Output…?? That´s All 5 days before release? One Year now you dayly show us the latest news about this camera. And now, one week before release theres no leaked picture, manual, sample pictures ect…???? Dont worry, you did a great job here, but, in the moment it´s tooooo quiet for a rumor page !

9 months ago |Good, this may be a redeeming factor for the price. I will need to see what quality signal it actually does output, and probably for the price to come down a bit, but this may be a viable way to do some good video then.
