(SR5) Also a new PRO wide angle zoom lens coming with the A9X (Reminder: Huge lens discounts in USA).

I told you that we would see plenty of new lenses along the upcoming new A9x full-frame camera. We will have a new 50mm f/1.4 Zeiss SSM prime lens, a new high quality tele zoom, the long awaited 500mm f/4.0 tele lens and now we also heard from our trusted sources that there will be a high end wide angle zoom lens! The current only wide angle zoom is the Zeiss 16-35mm f/2.8 ZA SSM lens and I think the new zoom will be even wider. My guess (my speculation!) is that the specs will be close to the Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8.
I hope to get more info soon. If you have some “rumor” to share contact me at sonyalpharumors@gmail.com or use the anonymous contact form on the right sidebar. Thanks!

6 months ago |I honestly think that fisheye zoom is a gimmick, only useful for a very small percentage of users.
I think that Canon designers were drunk one day and the marketing dept okayed their papers without looking.
Seriously, didn’t Canon have other things to do… they keep making a ton of outdated lens models that need refreshing. I hope that Sony doesn’t repeat the same mistake – they’re the ones that can’t afford veering off into the realm of gadgetry until they cover some serious issues in their core lineup (a decent 35/1.4 anyone? 180~200 macro?)
Carl
6 months ago |Canon’s decision to replace their aging fisheye with a zoom makes perfect sense considering they have three formats (FF, APS-H, APS-C) to support. One lens does all three, and works as a circular fisheye (which Nikon hasn’t made in autofocus and which isn’t available in A mount at all) to boot.
I personally find my 35/1.4 and 200 macro to be perfectly decent.
Rover
6 months ago |I couldn’t answer straight to Carl’s message because the share / related section obscured the Reply button. Or so it seemed. Anyways:
TTBOMK Sony makes no 180~200 macro. You are probably referring to the Minolta one, I take? Doesn’t count. The 35/1.4 looks like an embarrassment in pretty much every test and doesn’t have SSM (certainly wouldn’t buy it).
The fisheye zoom is, if anything, a part of a strategy by Canon to turn most lenses into Ls thus increasing the price (the same they’ve done with 100mm macro and even the 70-300/4-5.6 class lens). At any rate, fisheye lens isn’t probably among the most important lenses in a system, but there is a lot of stuff Canon could do instead (update their 50/1.4, 35/2 and 20/2.8 lenses for instance – but I feel they’re only be doing this by turning those lenses into L or EF-S).
I only hope Sony does better, especially with the NEX lineup (as I’m a NEX user as well). And no, I’m not one of the “fullframe NEX” crowd.
Carl
6 months ago |Doesn’t count why? Because it can’t be bought new with warrantee? Minolta lenses work just fine on Sony cameras, and a number of them offer excellent image quality.

6 months ago |Andrea, do you think it’s gonna be a G lens or Zeiss? Or maybe is it too early to predict?
admin
6 months ago |The sources didn’t tell me that yet.

6 months ago |I couldn’t imagine a new Zeiss wide angle zoom so early. The 16-35 is plenty good.. So or it’s a G or it’s something completely new.

6 months ago |Hopefully the 35 1.4 Zeiss is on it’s way too??!! They already have the bloody lens (canikon mf version) just needs ssm and A mount!

6 months ago |I think its a much better match-up to the standard 24-70/f2.8
I have both the Zeiss 24-70/f2.8 and the 16-35/f2.8 and I have always thought there was too much overlap between.
Depending on the optical quality I could see myself selling the Zeiss 16-35/f2.8 and replacing it with the new 14-24/f2.8. This would allow fast lens coverage from 14 to 200 with only three lenses in the bag and a forth if you carry a fast prime like the 85/f1.4………………GOOD DEAL! and It’s my opinion that that all most photographers need to carry.
It’s too bad that four lenses total close to 6k USD
I hope it’s a Zeiss, and I hope that it has weather sealing.
RVN
6 months ago |that’s right
that line zoom would be ideal n great for photografer
we just only have 3 lens zoom for close the gap from wide zoom 14-24mm2.8 to medium zoom 24-70mm and than medium tele 70-200mm
with carry one more fix lens everything would be perfect
Carlos Echenique
6 months ago |In Nikon parlance, that combo of zooms (14-24, 24-70, 70-200 f/2.8) are known as the Pro Zoom Trifecta. They run about $7.5k new in Nikkor glass.
Edgars
6 months ago |Sigma 12-24mm FF is very interesting lens, however it is pretty slow and with lot of IQ issues.
For size and weight perspective I would prefer Sony ZA 12-24mm FF f4 version over f2.8.

Mike
6 months ago |AdmIn, are you sure these are all lenses for full frame? It doesn’t make a lot of sense to release another pro wide angle zoom when the one they have is good and not very old. Lenses rarely get replaced that soon.
There is a significant hole in the lens lineup of their aps-c cameras though. Sony now has a high quality 16-50 weather proof lens. They now need a wide zoom 12-16mm f2.8 and telezoom 50-140mm f2.8 that are also weather proof. Then they will have a complete weather proof zoom range for aps c, something that neither canon or Nikon has.
From what Ive read, Sony was being pushed to drop full frame by some in their corporate offices because it was too expensive. I think Sonys future will be in aps c and if they can gain market ground there, they can then make a harder push into full frame.

6 months ago |Tokina 11-16 f2.8 is a very good third party lens for Sony APS-C. Not weather sealed, but certainly built like a tank.
In my experience, anything worse than F2.8 is really not much use for wide angle, as once you’ve put on the obligatory skylight filter, you’ve lost a stop or more! That prevents the Tamron/Sigma wide angles being serious contenders IMO.
hanugro
6 months ago |Sony will release 3 FF dSLT next year. CZ has said they would only make FF lens for Sony. That ‘some’ in their corporate office is an idiot. FF is one that drives camera sell. Nikon vowed few years ago that they only make APS-C dSLR. Now they are making FF.
One thing for sure is NEX will be APS-C only if that ‘some’ has voice. If they feel FF a-mount is too expensive then FF NEX will not make any sense. A-mount is going to be mirrorless as soon as direct in-sensor PDAF is feasible. My prediction it will be within 5 years, and will be ready when FF replacement of next year model appear. A-mount then will only serve mid-level to high-end-level, while NEX will take care of entry-level to mid-level.

6 months ago |More and more and more wide angle lenses while neglecting tele seems to be Sony. In other words wildlife photograpers are being neglected. And the 500 hardly makes up for it being a in between and a fixed focal length. If they want to do fixed focal length then a 600mm f4 would be where they should have gone.
And macro is being neglected with the lack of macro ringflash. Though we can probably expect that true flash for macro will be killed by led lights for video since Sony seems to think video is more important in a still camera than still photography. Just one more way video is hurting still photography.
Edgars
6 months ago |I like tele lenses more than wide, but all is not that bad. If you need reach, then 24Mpix on APS is what you need. Sony 70-400mm becomes pretty nice 100-600mm.
In macro department Sony urgently needs 150mm or 180mm macro lens.
ShamB
6 months ago |Walt, I use the Tamron 90 macro and a cheap Sony mount Dorr ringflash (its a cheap but proper macro ringflash, not like that crappy LED thing Sony sell).
Never had any issues. Sony may be slow on lenses, but there’s always plenty of third party stuff to fill out the gaps (at least, there is for APS-C).

6 months ago |The Nikon 14-24 is great – I’ve used one on a D3. However, don’t neglect the fact that it is a BIG and HEAVY lump of glass, with a front element like a lightbulb! I think there’ll still be a very important place for the 16-35ZA when this new one comes out.
Vivek
6 months ago |“However, don’t neglect the fact that it is a BIG and HEAVY lump of glass, with a front element like a lightbulb!”
With the kind of image quality it can provide, even if it weighed another kilo more, it would be OK.

Heck, even the other day someone on these boards though the A100 was a full frame.

6 months ago |I’m picturing a dinky APS camera with a plastic mount, with a big, solid metal 14-24/2.8 hanging off it, looking like it’s about to snap off.
Tony
6 months ago |Don’t worry – I know the difference.
It’s just having a fast wide angle lens is a nice thing to have, especially because I use it for filming (the 16-50 is wide angle enough for photos – but in film move it’s not enough for me).
The Tokina 11-16 is a little bit too short on the other end so a 14-24 would be a nice to have.

6 months ago |im gonna look fwd to this new WA/UWA zoom. UWA prime is fine too.
Since i already have 28F1.8 sigma, a zeiss of 12-24 / 14-24 not overlapping my 28 and wider than the current 1635 is most certainly welcome
Carl
6 months ago |An UWA zoom was the surprise winner of the recent lens poll, so it looks like their wish has been granted. Y’all better start saving.

zstan
6 months ago |Does Minolta have any similiar lens in the 14-24 range? Otherwise this would be a totally new design.
And i am quite confused between terms used here.
As i know, wide angle on full frame ranges from 24-35mm. these focal lengths are considered ‘wide’.
Anything below that would be considered ‘super/ultra wide’.
So my best guess here would be Sony releasing a new Zeiss/G 24-105 f4 instead of another UWA FF lens.
Tristan
6 months ago |seems no OSS for A-mount SLR lens.
JonasM
6 months ago |For A-mount you have stabilization in the camera body and also stabilizing in the lens (OSS) would be redundant.
Li Chen
6 months ago |Agree. 24-105 is a wide angle zoom. 14-24 is a super wide zoom.
emopunk
6 months ago |It could also be possible for Sony to release a substitute for 28-75 SAM (indeed starting for example at 24mm, hence the WA zoom). I really don’t want to think that a SAM lens is going to be the kit lens for upcoming A9x. Don’t you think?
Carl
6 months ago |My impression is that KM rebranded the 28-75 in the first place because of the lack of an affordable fast zoom, but that’s now covered by the 16-50. They’d only be targeting it at full frame users who can’t afford the 24-70 and don’t find the 28-75 or 28-70 enough, which strikes me as a pretty limited market.
Zstan
6 months ago |I was about to suggest this lens as well but I doubt Sony will come out with a 28-75 an brand it as a G or Zeiss
blqckscorp
6 months ago |hey everyone
just got my new cam and i’m looking for a fast affordable prime/zoom lens – would it be wise to invest in a 50mm prime (=good bang for the buck) – although the 35mm should be really good)
Or just go for the tokina 16-50 2.8 which should be fast and sharp?
Or save some money and go for the cz 24-70mm F/2.8 // 16-80mm F/3.5-4.5 ?
What about Sony 28-75mm F/2.8 // Tamron SP AF 28-75mm F/2.8 // Sony DT 16-105mm F/3.5-5.6 ??
Thanks for any help on deciding!
I mostly want to shoot people/portraits (weddings/party/street/nature)

6 months ago |Just got into the sony “system”. I have just the lens kit. But i want to get a fast affordable lens to get started.
Thought about the sony 35 1.8 + sony 50 1.8 or the tamron 17-50 2.8 (although it would be only 2/3 stops faster then the kit lens). – any recommendations? Thx
davidlam
6 months ago |I don’t need an ultra wide zoom, ZA14/f2.8 + ZA16-35 would be sufficient.
A high quality 24-105/f4 or 28-135/f4 would be more desirable for me.

And there is no talking about “Ultra wide”, just about “wide”. And many people say a 24-xxx *is* a wide angle lens.

6 months ago |Interesting
I have the 16-35 and it is absolutely incredible.
Personally I don’t see much value in 14-24, but I guess some people might like it. I’d rather have the 24-35 range than the 14-16 range
Again it seems like another odd Sony decision – there are MUCH more needed lenses in the lineup than a slightly wider lens when we already have the best 16-35 around

6 months ago |i have the zeiss 24-70, whereas the 16 x 35 overlaps, the new 14 x24 will fill in and perhaps be of a higher optic as it is more concentrated ? in the meantime i have been looking for the 1635 to see if i could get a deal. do you love the lens ?
