2 years ago |It’s unbelievable that Sony is pumping out firmware updates for the NEX so quickly, and still hasn’t released an A900 update! Perhaps Sony gave up on releasing any firmware updates for the A900. This does not bode well for professional shooters because it looks like Sony is abandoning the high end segment. If they plan to continue targeting the high end market, then they need to support the high end market!

2 years ago |It just doesn’t look right, such a lens on the NEX. Too big. Imagine mounting the 2.8/300G, you wouldn’t even see the camera.

2 years ago |Why would anyone buy sony lenses for NEX when autofocus not working?
There are cheaper alternatives.
Now, they will sell more glass. Smart decision.
btw: will AF work with any apeture?

2 years ago |this is great news!!! with AF working, I will buy a nex7 for sure!!! Any word on when they will release the firmware upgrade Admin?
Cheers, J

2 years ago |Good to hear, but I still doubt that anyone having a 70-200 2.8 SSM at home will bring it around without taking with him the DSLR as well. Would you ever pack a bag with all your SSM zoom lenses and NEX as main body? I don’t see the point.
Milos Janata
2 years ago |I thought they will also update whole alpha line otherwise I also don’t see the point.

2 years ago |How about NEX-5 (or NEX-7) as a backup body for DSLR users? Would that make sense?
LEdgars
2 years ago |Why thinking is always so straightforward? I have A900 without video and planed to buy NEX-5 with video. If I would need video with 300mm then I attach my 70-300mm G, not 18-55mm kit lens.
As I mentioned I planed, now I expect to get A55.

Alex
2 years ago |I didn’t know about any missing functionality for the A900. What’s not working?
qbic
2 years ago |For example:
- metering with manual lenses in A mode
- limited ABR
- search for “cmos integration time” in dpreview/sony forum
Firmware update is not only for “fixing”.
DD
2 years ago |I’d be the first to agree if there were actual problems with the A900. I just don’t think that Sony is under any obligation to give us new features for free. Sure it would be nice, but I don’t think that we’re automatically entitled to it.

2 years ago |It works both ways. I’m not entitled to buy another Sony product.

2 years ago |about time i would say… releasing the NEX without auto-focus with SAM and SSM lenses pissed a lot of people off and kept them from buying, but the target audience, were mainly amateurs with no other lenses, with this announcement i hope they will also announce a new NEX aimed at DSLR shooters as a back-up (and don’t tell me that a33/55 are that camera, they are simply too thick)
as for Sony leaving the pro market… i never actually heard anyone from Sony saying they are targeting the pro market…wonder why…

2 years ago |Let’s leave this as a move to expand the NEX lens line up.
Whether or not people stick expensive SSM lenses on the NEX is up the the owner. The fact that they (SSM/SAM) will now work is a a step forward they actually should have done when they originally released the NEX! At any rate, this will be more of use on cheap SAM lenses than SSM.
Think of it this way, if Sony released a firmware that works on SAM and not the SSM as well, everyone would just bash Sony even more for stupidity, right? I think people are too concentrated on the SSM aspect than the SAM.

2 years ago |This would be great. I’ve had my eye on the 50mm F1.4 lens for a while. I want to do some more low-light shooting with this camera.
Al
2 years ago |The 50mm F1.4 isn’t SAM or SSM just traditional screw drive AF. The 50 1.8 however is SAM…

I’ve been waiting for this. Now I’ll buy the adapter for my 16-35
Barney
2 years ago |It’s going to need a lot more than firmware to make that work
er
2 years ago |cuz SOny just short of Nex’s lens that’s why they will release firmware
for the use of SAM and SSM.

2 years ago |Eugh, to the people complaining about alpha lenses looking out of place, I don’t think the 85mm 2.8, 50mm 1.8 and 30mm 2.8 macro would look out of place at all, having some nice fast primes that autofocus would be great, and would easily put sony miiilesss above the competition
emopunk
2 years ago |@ROB: indeed I was refering to SSM zooms.
Paul
2 years ago |This would be huge for NEX-VG10 owners (mine is shipping this week), though the rumor seems only to concern NEX still cameras. I need a pancake/prime badly for the NEX-VG10 that shoots wide angle and has a better f-stop than the NEX-only 16mm f2.8. Adding autofocus capability with a new SAL35F18 f1.8 would be fantastic. I hope it’s that simple.

2 years ago |Forgive my ignorance, as i don’t yet have the NEX nor ever a Minolta AF camera… but is there something about a SAM or SSM lens that’s different from an AF lens built for minolta AF cameras? For example – does this new firmware allow a Sigma 30/1.4 to work with a NEX camera?
ChenAlan
2 years ago |Yeah, SAM and SSM have built in motors while regular SAL lenses depend on the in-camera body motor. With regards to the Sigma 30/1.4, sorry – I don’t know.
Sky_walker
2 years ago |The SAM/SSM lenses don’t need the screwdriver to autofocus – they have it’s own AF motor.
Sigma 30/1.4 is HSM lens – HSM is Sigma kind of SSM, so yes, it will autofocus with NEX after firmware update.
00aeiou00
2 years ago |sorry, but this isnt correct. the 30mm f1.4 for the alpha mount is not HSM unfortunately, all the other mounts for this sigma lens are however. I guess they just dont like sony for some reason. same deal with the 12-24mm.
Cheers, J
Sky_walker
2 years ago |it’s not? Oh shit… it really isn’t! WTF?! Why they sell it for the same price as HSM version? God damn it… and I thought only Tamron is a thief with lack of VC on A-mount lenses.
~_~ Someone should really slap these companies right in the face.

2 years ago |I welcome AF suuport for SSM/HSM/others type of electrical motor. But that does not mean I need to buy those lenses. I just happy with standard lenses. This firmware in my case just make nex-x second hand value higher. Better tan my a200 last time.

2 years ago |What a sad little camera….and the noise is not as good as the vanishing A560…if Sony keeps making these sad little play toys…I’m done…I truely do regret selling my A700 a year ago…but even that great camera isn’t up to snuff nowadays…has Sony lost their minds? That Zeiss lens looks great…but that sad little NEX looks like a tiny sack of peas behind it…dear sony…please grow some balls big enough to match your lenses…

2 years ago |Dear David, are you really in need to compensate for something David ?
Size doesn’t matter
SonyA700
2 years ago |David, what is your problem? So the NEX isn’t for you, so what? Don’t like it? Don’t buy one. Sony aren’t making cameras specifically for YOU, they are making them for a mass market.
There is very little profit margin in high end cameras and lenses. Sony will wrap up the consumer end and the higher end follows on from that. Sony know EXACTLY what they are doing and it will take several years, not months.
As for your comment about the A700. Has the A700 suddenly started to take poorer pictures because later models have been released? Mine hasn’t. It still outclasses many dSLRs that are being released now and is a joy to use.
David, do us all a favour. Buy a Nikon.

David – or just check A580

2 years ago |I would love me some NEF if only they offered the level of function and control like an a700. I have no use for a point-n-shoot APS-C-sized sensor camera. :/
Paul W
2 years ago |Would it now be feasible to release an adapter that would provide autofocus for non SAM and SSM AF lenses by including a motor in the adapter, powered either by its own battery or via the camera battery somehow?
Fuzzphoto
2 years ago |Paul W, that would be technically possible, but it would be considerably more expensive than the current E-to-A mount adapter. I don’t think Sony has legacy A-mount users in their NEX viewfinder.
