(SR5) First image of the NEX-5N with external EVF

There is no day without having a Sony leak! This is the new picture of the NEX-5N with external EVF. Looks good or not?
The new EVF has 2,4 million dots and intelligent eye sensor. The bad news is that it works on the NEX-5N only, and not on the “older NEX”.
Everything (NEX-7, NEX-5N, VG-20, external EVF, 24mm f/1.8 Zeiss, 50mm f/1.8 OSS, 55-210mm OSS, A77, A65, vertical grip, 16-50mm f/2.8) will be announced on August 24 at around 6-7 am London time. be sure to be here on SonyAlphaRumors to follow the announcement live! As usual I will link you all reviews, images samples, press releases and so on.
P.S.: You can find SAR also on Google+, Facebook and Twitter!

The perfect solution for me would be a Nex-7 inside a Nex-5N casing

10 months ago |Oh, they have changed the accessory port. Too bad.
r41n
10 months ago |How did they changed it? Will it still be able to put on HVL-f20s flash which was on the NEX-C3?
Raul S.
10 months ago |They only changed a few pins on the accessory port to enable communication between the sensor and the new EVF. The accessory port is still the same, so you can use the HVL-F20S or HVL-F7S flash units, or the ECM-SST1 mic…

10 months ago |+1 the viewfinder looks quite big
Will
10 months ago |Cosmetically, it would have looked better if it were more rounded, to evoke a sort of microscope concept. But it is what it is.

10 months ago |This viewfinder looks alot nicer than the Olympus vf-3. The eyecup is much better. Does this Sony viewfinder tilt?
Raul S.
10 months ago |In dpreview’s Sony NEX Talk forum, the one who published the picture says that the EVF is tilt able.
morgul
10 months ago |Looks very flimsy and like it could snap off easily.
NEX’s proprietary accessory port is a big weakness of the system.
Raul S.
10 months ago |Do you have a NEX camera at least? Because even if the Sony manual says to avoid it, I can grab my NEX-5 with a Canon 55mm f/1.2 (kind of heavy combo) from the HVL-F20S flash unit and it doesn’t seem to snap off easily…
If you think the accessory port is a weakness, then you should see the NEX-7.
GH
10 months ago |What’s weak about the NEX-7? The Sony/Minolta hotshoe is sturdy.
Raul S.
10 months ago |No, I mean, That if he sees the NEX-3/5/C3/5N accessory port as a weakness, then he should see the NEX-7 instead, because the Minolta/Alpha Hot shoe is more secure.
1.5 Crop
10 months ago |Even sony says it’s a weakness? They should’ve just used a regular hot shoe + accessory port like everyone else.
morgul
10 months ago |Yes, I have NEX-3. The port/flash connection is very flimsy so that I am afraid to keep the flash on the unit all the time, as I would have done if it was more sturdy (like regular hotshoe).
NEXfive
10 months ago |Nevertheless connecting the ECM-SST1 microphone is even more difficult than the flash those connections are surprisingly solid. But you’re right of course about the proprietary port, since I’d prefer a standard flash hot shoe plus a cinch audio in and would skip the viewfinder anyway.

Now if there was also an extension cord to be placed between EVF and camera… This could be a camera for doing all kinds of crazy stuff
Mikey
10 months ago |Wow that is UUUUGGGGLLLLYYYY. I’m going to call it ‘ugly nexy’. The EP3+VF2 looks okay to me, definitely takes a bit of the aesthetic value away from the EP3 but it looks okay. This NEX+EVF is just a monster though. Thank goodness for the NEX7!

10 months ago |Agreed. Looks like someone put a small bounce flash unit on the NEX backwards by mistake :p

but I will get the NEX7 if I need the EVF.

10 months ago |and what about the adapter with integrated evf, any pic of it attached to the nex5n?
GH
10 months ago |There is no adapter with an EVF. The rumored LA-EA2 allows phase detect AF.

10 months ago |Looks good and spec is good, it’s inconvenient to have it on top of the camera like that though. It’s too easy to bump it into things, but it’s no worse than the external viewfinders for Olympus and Panasonic.

10 months ago |Thanks God! I already sold my NEX-5 heading for the NEX-7 or A77 in December. This idea of only be compatible with NEX-5N will leave all the other models mouth watering.

10 months ago |Well, it’s better than the “Fun-a-Sony-c” GF3!!
Clyde
10 months ago |Ridiculous looking and wanting to break. Can’t believe it doesn’t have a built in pop up flash or a proper alpha standard hot shoe.
Someone want to tell me the purpose of creating small camera bodies that have awkward appendages sprouting off in different directions? Try putting that freaky mutation in your pocket.
“Hey is that your camera or are you just really happy to see me?”
Anonymous
10 months ago |Totally agree. Instead of getting a NEX-5N/EVF/CZ 24/1.8 combo, you might as well get an a65 and 35/1.8 lens. Size will be the same and you’ll have the extra benefit of body IS and flash.

10 months ago |Of course!!

10 months ago |Ahahahah! Luckily you’re not the only one wondering about that. That’s why I expect lot of this stuff to just stay on the shelves.. We’ll see if it’s a matter of fashion and in one year they’re still on this route..
Dean
10 months ago |nice, but should be expensive… usd300 i guess
Chad
10 months ago |Looks like a good solution for those that want the smaller 5 and the option for EVF but the 7 is looking more and more appealing. I think the extra body size is more realistic for this type of camera – especially with the current Sony lens roadmap..
Someday soon we’ll have large sensor/small bodies with flush, telescoping lenses like the old luxury film compacts, and then small will truly make sense.
Tiger
10 months ago |I think this looks great. Anyone else notice that C3 shows 16.2 MP and this one shows 16.1? Slightly different sensors, maybe?
Eric
10 months ago |Interesting observation…
I guess we’ll have to wait for DXOMark to tell us if there is a difference between the sensors.

10 months ago |So the LA-EA2 adapter is not going to be announced on 24 August or is this an omission?
If not announced when may it become available? I fancy one of these for my NEX-5 if not too bulky.

10 months ago |So now, everyone is complaining about the solution that Sony gave for the lack of EVF? Geez…
jazzroy
10 months ago |I like it, and I prefer it to Nex-7 solution.
If I want to go compact, I just unscrew it.
If I want a viewfinder, it’s much more comfortable this one (it has tilt too!!) than the tiny fixed one of Nex-7.
This is much more a pro solution and in the logical flow of the box with sensor with addons philosophy.
Willi
10 months ago |Totally agree with you. It may not be the best-looking accessory, but it definitely has huge advantages in terms of usability. I would find it really strange if there was no similar option available for the NEX-7.
Now imagine they would also offer it as a “remote EVF” that can be detached and used while holding the camera overhead, or even from a larger distance. This would eliminate all problems of swivel/tilt screens in bright sunlight while being a very compact solution…
Weird
10 months ago |This shit will not work with previous NEX camera!!!? Oh…..WHAT A SURPRISE… We all knew that Sony would fu***** us again with their rubbish marketing tricks.
NEXfive
10 months ago |Much cheaper and probably more comfortable to use anyway: http://shop.ebay.com/items/?_nkw=viewfinder+sony+nex
I don’t miss viewfinders at all and in those rare cases the display is too small, I would prefer attaching a bigger one via HDMI and still have the option to use the ECM-SST1 microphone.
Alain
10 months ago |Just a question : how it is working if you want to use the viewfinder with a flash hvl-f7s or f20s ?
Could be useful ..
emarsh
10 months ago |You can only put one accesory in at a time, so either flash, or evf, one or the other. But if you need a flash, then most of the time you wouldn’t need an evf anyway, the lcd would be fine to look at.
Allan
10 months ago |the awkward is that it is impossible using viewfinder and using flash at the same time !!
