(SR5) Full A58 and NEX-3n specs.

So it’s confirmed via Photorumors. The announcement of the new A58 and NEX-3n and the three E-mount lenses is definitely scheduled for next Monday (Feb 25th). Be sure to be online on SonyAlphaRumors on that day! As usual I will update you with all the live news and reviews I can find!
And here are the specs:
Sony A58:
- 20MP Exmor APS-C sensor and 1 stop improvement over predecessor
- OLED viewfinder with 100% coverage
- BIONZ processor
- Clear Image Zoom feature
- Sweep panorama feature
- ISO range: 100-16.000
- 8 fps
- Price for body with new 18-55mm SAM II kit lens $599
Sony NEX-3n:
- 16MP Exmor APS-C sensor (same as NEX-F3)
- ISO range: 200-16,000
- 4fps
- Tiltable LCD screen
- Electronic zoom control
- BIONZ processor
- Built-in flash (GN6)
- Available in two colors: black and silver
- Price for body with 16-50mm kit lens $499
PR also agot the price for the new A-mount lenses:
- Zeiss Planar T* 50mm f/1.4 ZA SSM lens: around $1500
- Sony 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 SAM II: around $200
- Sony 70-400mm f/4-5.6G SSM II: around $3000
PR also got a new info about the compact cameras:
- Sony TX-30 with 18MP sensor, 5x optical zoom and price of $350
- Sony WX-300 with 18MP sensor, 20x optical zoom and price of $300
- Sony HX-300 with 20MP sensor, 50x optical zoom and price of $500
I cannot confirm yet the price of the new lens. As you noticed $3,000 for the 70-400mm lens would be way too high!

4 months ago |Eehhh…..did I read the last line right… 70-400 f 4,5-5,6 for only 3.000 little euros? That’s take away compared to a Canon 100-400 f. 4 (!) for some 1.400 euros.
This is cashing in on dummys!

4 months ago |Humm.. nothing about the new focus system yet.. I really wonder if Sony will install AF-D to A58
Gabriel
4 months ago |Sony says it’s cool. Maybe eye driven focus, you look where you want to focus and blink to take the photo. Yes, that’s what i could call cool
Fritzchen
4 months ago |Honestly, lens prices get closer to Leica prices.
Do we want that?

Marc
4 months ago |Only $599 for the A58 kit with the 18-55mm SAM II ? That would be about the same as the A57 kit is now. I wouldn’t be surprised if the retail price for the kit would be $699 (or even more).
If the A58 will be announced on the 25th, will it be available/shipping in early April ? Any rumors about the availability yet ?

4 months ago |Sony 70-400mm f/4-5.6G SSM II: around $3000
what i can say about the price is WOW!? what make it fit the price? fully weather sealed, built-in stabilaztion, faster auto focus speed, ssm and wat else? it just so wow! big difference price from current 70-400mm.

this MUST be some kind of a cruel joke…..will anybody buy that?!…..current model is great and goes for almost half the price…..

4 months ago |True
Sony seem to have lost the plot on pricing recently.
If they are trying to win market share from Canikon then they need to show value for money. Lower price better features.
They are not going to win against the entrenched players in a straight fight.

4 months ago |$3000 for 70-400G? Is that a typo? I could understand maybe $2500 but $1000 premium over the previous version sounds insane.

4 months ago |Hi Guys… what’s the difference between the available 70-400 and the upcoming 1?
and how much is it worth a second hand 70-400 G (good conditions) nowadays?

Carl
4 months ago |It’ll have a faster SSM motor, weather sealing, nano coating and a white paint job. Probably no changes to the optical formula, but being one of Sony’s most recent lenses it’s a low priority for that anyway.
Infocus
4 months ago |Or a moment to reconsider Sony. Just checked in the web shop. The current 70-400 sells for 1599 euro, against the Canon 100-400 4,5-5,6 for 1.419 euro. So, the new Sony 70-400 is twice the price of the current choices… Or two times the new A58 extra.
Very curious if they are going to sell it.
Or is it a mistake by the source?
RD
4 months ago |A58 with kit lens is only $599? That’s certainly surprising, but I guess the a58 is the new lower tier since there’s supposedly no more a3x.

4 months ago |second hands 70-400g are going for around 1000 Euros here in Europe and that would make some $1000 in the States…..
…OK maybe few crazy photographers did…..I bought used d300 and a sigma for almost half the price and the same telephoto capabilities……
I have a feeling that 70-400G II will share faith of 500mm f4…nobody ever bought that lens
Sky_walker
4 months ago |With Sigma? Lol… I’m sure it’s comparable… sure… haha

Sigma makes very few good lenses. VERY FEW. Out of their entire range you can count on one hand, the ones that worth it. Their 75-300 is abysmal at the telephoto end… It is beyond horrible, because even stopping down doesn’t help much.
80-400 is better controlled and seems to be better, but it seems to be a little light on resolution across the frame and has pretty bad CA.
50-500 is just… Bad…

4 months ago |I have the old 70-400mm but I have also seen many great shots taken on the Sigma 50-500mm HSM. I am not alone as can be seen from this link and the reviews of users
http://www.dyxum.com/lenses/Sigma-50-500-F4.5-6.3-APO-DG-OS-HSM_lens585.html
Stan
4 months ago |Well, I agree that alot of times its not the tool, its how you use it. But then again, my friend, who’s a pro photographer took great pictures with my Galaxy S phone. Yeah, they weren’t portraits, but landscape stuff turned out great. A bit low on resolution though. So any lens can be used to take a great picture if you know what you’re doing, but even if you do, a great lens will add a lot to the picture.
Reviews are always subjective. What I see in these tests paint a completely opposite picture at 300mm+. http://slrgear.com/reviews/showproduct.php/product/215/cat/31

4 months ago |I bought the original 70-400G in Hong Kong, July 2010 for $1640 brand new!!!… Sold it on eBay for $1550 late last year… Great lens but I didn’t like the fact that it had no lens lock and people kept telling me to buy an elastic band to hold the lens in place when on the camera!!!… drove me crazy!!!…
Bought the Sigma 50-500 new from Amazon in 2011 for $1556 and it’s working great for me… and it has a Lens Lock!!!…
Thought about buying the new 70-400G II but hearing the price is around $3000 that’s not even funny… that’s criminal!!!… Unless there is a dramatic upgrade in the optics then faster SSM and weather proofing isn’t worth an additional $1000 from the $1998 RRP of the old lens…
I understand Zeiss pricing the 50mm around $1500… Probably about right!… but upgrading the 70-400G and then doubling the price… that’s insane!!!

4 months ago |Im a Singaporean. Just curious the price stated on this site..Are they in Euro or USD?
I had always think its in USD. Whatever the case.. new 70 400 for 3000 is too much!
The Zeiss 50 sounds alright though..Since i’ve expected it to be that price range. 24F2 and 85F1.4 kind of prices.
But really..70 40 is way beyond me..cant believe it if Sony really want to make that happen.. oh my..

4 months ago |ISO 16.000? Is this maximum auto ISO value?
If the sensor is 1 stop better I don’t understand why stop at ISO 16.000
when setting ISO manual.
3000$ for a 70-400mm F5.6 lens is crazy.
I guess it is wrong and the right price is around $2000.
If the new Zeiss 50mm f1.4 is $1500, Sony also has to update
the Sony 50mm F1.4 one day… or keep it alive.

4 months ago |keep your camera and the lenses that you had good memories with as memorials, and buy a nikon or canon. i am really thinking to do so
peter
4 months ago |I sold my D2x and its kit to keep the A850.
the thing is that with either nikon or canon you will be able to save at least half the price per each piece you buy in comparison to sony and even minolta G lenses. not only that, you can find a lot of second hand lenses set for auctions.
i did not regret what i did so far, but i hope that i won’t soon!

4 months ago |The 70-400mm was launched in 2008 with for 1,500 USD according to dpreview. Adjusted for inflation it should be 1,600 USD.

4 months ago |I’m intrigued to see how this sensor will perofrm on high ISO, is there any improvment on apparent noise at high ISO it will be due to improved DR on high ISO as in Toshiba sensor in Nikon D5200.

4 months ago |I was looking at the 70-400 II and the 70-200 II .. if they’re erally going to bump prices up to $3000 per lens, I’m better off selling my current sony gear and buying a Nikon, I’ll end up saving money.
agorabasta
4 months ago |A full stop more DR is possible for the lowest ISO, but only if 14-bit effective digitisation happens for the shadow/lowest values. Absolutely physically impossible for higher ISO’s.

4 months ago |even if it is worth the money, their way of doing business makes no sense… it seems they r killing the A mount photography. i wish if some1 can buy back minolta which will then take over and produce at least pro G lenses.
Carl
4 months ago |Even if a design is worth the money, if its beyond their customer’s means then it still won’t sell. The Sony 500/4 is better than the equivalents from Canon and Nikon, but it’s rather a pyrrhic victory when it’s priced at $14,000.
Maximus
4 months ago |Your “full specs” do not include the focussing system. Thats one of the most important points! Any information about that?

4 months ago |hmmmmm
if the A58 will cost 599$ with the new kit lens ! Does it worth it to sell my A57 and add about 150$ to get the A58 ?
if a vertical grip is available for the A58 I will upgrade but if not ,I’m not sure
LR
4 months ago |yes I think it’s worth giving money to Sony to save the company from bankrupt
Joking aside, i would be a bit mad at sony if i would had bought a brand new a57, gold rewarded on dpreview. I don’t like early upgrades but here, Unfortunatly, if it cost you only 150$ I think it is worth the upgrade. This camera with all the new specs is very tempting.

4 months ago |Riight, so I will totally buy the 70-400G for 3000 USD. And then I will join the crowd at the mental hospital.
I mean, I am a Sony fan, like my A77 but there simply is no way that I will shed out that amount of money for that lens. If this thing costs a penny above 2k, then my next camera will be a Nikon and my next lens will be the Sigma 120-300 f2.8. I am pretty sure I will save money and will not loose out on IQ.
If Sony wants to keep me as a customer at thece prices, they will need to come up with something crazy exciting and exclusive to be worth it.
Carl
4 months ago |Sony can do “crazy exciting and exclusive”. It’s “value for money” that they struggle with.
whistler
4 months ago |If they can deliver a never before seen IQ which would be either thanks to new lens optics, coating, sensor tech or AF algorithm and this technology would be avaiable only to Sony and no other producer – then this could be worth 3000 USD. Unless there is nothing behind, then i doubt anyone will buy this lens. I could imagine 1800 USD to be a fair price, not more.
Jason
4 months ago |The NEX-3N WITH the 16-50 pz for less than 500?? Sorry, but there is NO other $500 ASP-C combo or P&S compact that can compare when thinking price versus IQ versus size.

4 months ago |I’ve had many years use of my 70-400G which cost me (new) less than $1000 while folks hold off and hold off just to pay three times what I paid for what sounds like it will be no improvement as far as photography. And my 70-400G will continue to provide me with excellent photographs.
And it does not look like a Cannon White lens either!

4 months ago |While everybody talks about the a58, You can go to Sony site get A57 body, a sal55300, and a stereo mike for $700. $450 off list price. If you paid full price for he mic and 55-300mm lens that would make the A57 cost $250. Bundle savings.

4 months ago |Would there be mirror flip-up with A58 and AF-D support for all A-mount lenses?
Any improvement in Hi ISO noise, the A57 noise is even worse than OM-D!
EVF refresh rate got to be as fast as A99 for capturing sports.
Any plans to make a fast 50-150/f2.8 zoom?
Then, it would be a killer dual-lens kit for fast actions!

4 months ago |That A58 front picture looks like it lost the aperture preview button that the A55 had down by the lens mount (not sure if the A57 maintained that or lost it…) Not a dealbreaker, but interesting to me as it is a feature I found myself using.
Ponch1966
4 months ago |It looks to have it at bottom .. left of the lens at about the 7 o’clock position.
The A57 definitely has it as I own one and its in the exact same spot.
I’m more concerned about the rear LCD screen looking like the one from the A37.
Hope it isn’t the same hinge as that and the same 230k resolution.
Would hope they would keep it close to what the A57 has.
