Douglas Grillo
9 months ago |Been a Nex 5n owner, this is not bad at all, but the Nex 6 looks more appealing to me right now.

9 months ago |never mind, i was thinking of something else.
Maximus
9 months ago |SLT-Technology?
Mistral75
9 months ago |Strange indeed… What does it mean?
Mistral75
9 months ago |It was a mistake; Andrea deleted it.
Ryan
9 months ago |Been waiting for this camera for a couple months now! I was going to upgrade from my C3 to a 5N, but im glad I held I held off till now
ACLV
9 months ago |Erh, SLT technology? Isnt this a mirrorless camera?
And how about app support and OS information Andrea?
James
9 months ago |Wtf? SLT technology? Continous AF? 99 Phase points?? o_O
M2
9 months ago |Can someone refresh me, does it have Time Lapse functionality ?
kinki
9 months ago |SLT tech? Must be a typo
admin
9 months ago |Typo sorry! Copied the HTML code from the A99 spec list and didn’t remove that line!
N.R.
9 months ago |Apart from some BS specs that look like mixed in from the other camera spec sheet – I don’t see any big difference fro the 5N model …
Jon
9 months ago |Mostly the PDAF on sensor, touch shutter, wi-fi, and app support. there’s also additional wheel/control dial and a function button.
Weakling
9 months ago |PDAF, wheel and function button might be able to convince me to go for the 5R instead of a probably much cheaper 5N, but it will be a hard sell.
Sky_walker
9 months ago |As if any iteration of NEX-5 would be a breakthrough making a no-brainer.
That’s how these cameras are made. Get used to it
Jon
9 months ago |For me, it depends on the autofocus improvements and if there’s been any other improvements to the sensor. Otherwise, I’ll probably just stick to my Nex 5N.
Boooe
9 months ago |I guess there are improvements. 16 mpx sensor hasn’t been upgraded for about 3 years. Time to upgrade. On-sensor PDAF suggests the sensor has other improvements suited to mirrorless cameras, not just DSLR ones.
Sahaja
9 months ago |If the on-sensor PDAF actually works well, it means Sony no longer need “SLT technology” on any of their new cameras.
Dave Lively
9 months ago |Sony needs to keep incrementally improving their cameras to stay competitive. This upgrade is meant to persuade people also considering an m43, Samsung or Canon mirrorless to buy the 5R instead. I am sure Sony will not object to people buying a 5R to replace their 5N but doubt they expect to see many such sales. I like the idea of faster autofocus but do not plan to upgrade myself.
Cameras are starting to get like cars or computers. Manufacturers need to keep their products up to date but cannot expect anyone except a true gearhead to buy every new model.
Atlasman
9 months ago |For those who own the 5N and OLED EVF, it wouldn’t be a big leap to sell off their camera and replace it with the 5R—like myself. This is one of the beauties of modular designs.
Olaf
9 months ago |The 99 PD AF Points sound interesting. Andrea, any news on the price (also for the WA lens)?
Raphael
9 months ago |Lag 0.02s, faster than A99?
john
9 months ago |that struck me weird as well
Olaf
9 months ago |If I am not mistaken the 5N already had 20 milliseconds
GunnarK
9 months ago |No, you are not mistaken. And so has NEX-7, A65 and A77 (when using electronic 1.st curtain).
.
John Maverick
9 months ago |It doesn’t have to flip the mirror. Also does the a99 have an electronic first curtain?
The Lotus Eater
9 months ago |0.02secs, 0.05secs. Either way, you won’t notice the difference.
Sky_walker
9 months ago |So no separate release for NEXes and Alphas?
That’s weird.
I thought that all NEX stuff will be released tomorrow, while all Alpha stuff will be released on 12th September.
Jon
9 months ago |it would make more sense if they released all the nex stuff at the same time.
euy
9 months ago |Sounds great “on the paper”..I wonder why Sony is selling the A77 twice the price of the 5r..and I am really pissed when I compare the specs..(AF points and system)..ARGHHHH!!!!!!
Jon
9 months ago |I’m not sure if the autofocus on this camera will be as fast as the one in the A77 so don’t be too upset yet.
Sky_walker
9 months ago |It won’t be even close. Obvious thing: tiny sensors will always be inferior to fully-sized one. Especially in dim light or for sensors at the edge of the frame.
Real question is if it’ll be fast enough. Not if it’ll be as fast as A77.
Catalin
9 months ago |The sensors in the NEX-5R and A77 are both APS-C sensors identical in size. Or maybe you mean the phase detection sensors ?
Sky_walker
9 months ago |Yea, ofq I mean PDAF sensors
There are no other “sensors on the edge of the frame” then the AF
Steve
9 months ago |Technology marches on and makes last year’s state-of-the-art this years old school
lemon
9 months ago |A77 is also weather and dust sealed : )
Jon
9 months ago |I think there’s also IBIS in A77
zstan
9 months ago |and an EVF
roger48
9 months ago |Because it can, Sony are in business to make profits and there are enough people who will pay the price for an A77 rather than a NEX whatever.
Dave Lively
9 months ago |Any idea if Wednesday is going to be just the official release of a spec sheet or if we will see preview tests of NEX-5R cameras the big review websites might already be looking at?
Jon
9 months ago |Dave, I think Dpreview puts up a preview video after each camera is officially announced.
ervinel
9 months ago |i’ll wait for nex-6
Catalin
9 months ago |I don’t think there is any kind of Application support. The admin may have mistaken the Application support with “Remote via (Android) Application” and that’s where it all came. It’s impossible for Sony to use a proprietary platform for “applications”. Sorry to disappoint you
E
9 months ago |Makes sense, app support may mean that there will be an Android app for it.
Jimmy
9 months ago |I’m thinking the same thing because it makes so much sense than actual applications in the camera. Good thing they kept the ir sensor, though.
Keith
9 months ago |Can’t wait to find out if this has fast AF.
AF and lens selection are the only things m43 have over NEX.
With the new lenses coming, if this has m43 quick AF then I’ll sell all my m43 gear and have a 5R for people and a 7 for landscapes / Travel
roger48
9 months ago |Why?
kirk fuk
9 months ago |YOu need to sell yours as well, cause IMO this is the beginning of the m43 end!
NEX6NEX6NEX6
9 months ago |Hi Andrea
What about the detailed specs of NEX6 ?
This is for sure the most exciting compromise between 5N, 5R and 7 !

Jurka
9 months ago |I guess it cannot keep continous focus on moving subjects, like other mirrorless Sony`s can`t.
ageha
9 months ago |Wrong, Nikon 1 does it as good as any SLR.
Ke
9 months ago |Well, in good light it does.
The Lotus Eater
9 months ago |…with much smaller lenses and larger DOF.
BJ
9 months ago |I’m curious to see if the new AF system improves the LA-EA1 adapter. It would be nice to get good auto-focus without the mirror in the way. The Nikon adapter for their V/J cameras is pretty quick and it’s just like the LA-EA1.
a.lu.mi.
9 months ago |Touch screen LCD with Touch Shutter : So great!!! will NEX-6 be the same?
ageha
9 months ago |Yeah, awesome. It’s the same as the one year old NEX-5N.
Catalin
9 months ago |I had the NEX-5n and it did not have touch shutter, only touch focus.
Thom
9 months ago |I am in the Market for a new camera system, currently a Canon 7D & several L glass lenses are in the bag. I am very interested in the NEX system. Getting tired of carrying around heavy equipment. Shoot people, landscapes street with some Sports! After reading all of the online reviews, I am looking for some real life opinions/feedback from real users. It seems the choices are Nex5n, 5R and the Nex7 any suggestions or feedback.
Thanks for the help!
astrosandy
9 months ago |Wait for Nex 6 announcement which is due on 12th September. If you can’t wait then Nex 7 or 5N are on the market (and are falling in price). Both are great cameras. I chose 7 over 5N for better controls and ergonomics and now I am very much interested in 6.
Quobetah
9 months ago |Please post the VG900 full specs next.:)
streetshooter
9 months ago |we will find out tom if the phase detection in the new nex cameras are as fast as a SLT camera.
E
9 months ago |It will not, then there would be no need for the a99.
But let’s hope it is a step forward from EOS-M.
Boooe
9 months ago |It cannot be “step forward from eos-m”, because that’s different technologies with different fabrication. Unless Canon licensed it from Sony (unlikely)
E
9 months ago |I’m sure they are not violating each others patents, but both are mirrorless aps-c cameras with on sensor pdaf. So I definitely think they can be compared.
streetshooter
9 months ago |yea but a99 is a full frame and nex5r is aps-c sensor, i think u meant the a77 or a57
if it is its a step ahead
E
9 months ago |Maybe a bit cryptic …
-If they can deliver AF speed with on sensor PDAF, there is no need for a SLT a99, because then the mirror can go away.
So then the road ahead would be a mirrorless Alpha, or a NEX FF.
Difference being IBIS…
GunnarK
9 months ago |No, PDAF On-Board-Sensors will never get the performance needed to get rid of the mirror, moving or non-moving. The non-On-Board PDAF sensors are HUGE in order to be fast and usuable in low light. On-Board PDAF sensors can’t occupy such large sensor areas without severe degradation of image quality. Hence On-Board-Sensor PDAFs may work in bright light conditions only.
.
Sahaja
9 months ago |Yes but the PDAF sensors on the imaging sensor are receiving 100% light whereas separate ones are only getting about 33% of the light intensity (via the SLT mirror). And who knows how large the AF sensors on the imaging chip are? They could be using a spread out array of pixels rather than a single pixel for each “sensor”.
On-sensor PDAF is probably also assisted by CDAF
Sahaja
9 months ago |I meant:
They could be using a spread out array of pixels rather than a tight pixel cluster for each “sensor”.
Danjele
9 months ago |No FLASH???
newbie
9 months ago |Sorry to ask, but what is the benefit of phase detection ? Which difference with the the NEX5N for instance ?
Thanks
Ke
9 months ago |Phase detection is better at tracking movements than contrast. Less blurry shots of people moving, hopefully.
JesperMP
9 months ago |Could it be that Olympus and Sony have made a deal.
Olympus gets to use Sonys latest sensor in their cameras (OM-D E-M5).
Sony gets to use the on-sensor PDAF that Olympus has developed.
If so, it could be good news for Sony Nex, as Olympus on-sensor PDAF is one that actually works.
ageha
9 months ago |No. Olympus doesn’t have on-sensor PDAF.
Hellven
9 months ago |olympus already said that CDAF is the way, they dont have PDAF
JesperMP
9 months ago |Major bad by me. I mixed up Nikon 1 and Olympus. I must have been more than usually confused.
Catalin
9 months ago |However, I do expect that the Nikon 1 v2 (or v3) will use the Sony RX100 sensor, so it may be some validity in the technology exchange you are talking about.
clivengu
9 months ago |Will the 3 lenses announce together with this tomorrow?
justin
9 months ago |no improvements in audio? no external mic input? i’d like to upgrade from the 5n if it supports external mics.
art
9 months ago |electronic level?
Dair
9 months ago |Please, please, please, make the improvement that won’t show among the HW specs – a sensible, quick and intuitive menu system (like many other cameras have) and avoid the white/light grey background in it (makes one blind at night)!
Justin
9 months ago |FYI – there is already a dark theme setting in the existing NEX cameras
Dair
9 months ago |Oh, thanks! Didn’t have enough time to experiment with the camera settings unfortunately.
Still, I wish Sony would put some effort into improving NEX’s menu system. It is a subject of some reservations in many reviews and it indeed seems little clumsy.
(… and unlike the HW features, it won’t even increase the production cost per unit once finished
Robert
9 months ago |Will new NEX-5R with built in flash like NEX-3F?
Dair
9 months ago |Does not seem so. There are some “leaked” images 6 pages back.
Jon
9 months ago |No, I think their keeping the original design philosophy of a thin camera body for Nex 5R which they had when they launched the camera.
Kris
9 months ago |Will the 5R be available for purchase tomorrow?
baraboom
9 months ago |Hi Every one! I am new to this site. I have been following the latest news on NEX with excitment. Any one knows what are the major differences between 5R and 6 (Other than OLED)? Thank You!
Jon
9 months ago |Just the EVF and that the Nex 6 has a physical PASM mode dial that looks like it built on top of control dial. It also has a built-in flash and a flash hotshoe.
gat
9 months ago |will it perform 1 stop better than g1x in high iso?
Ash
9 months ago |Is there a third party process of weather sealing a NEX camera ? Nowadays there are more and more companies(Eg: liquipel.com) offering to waterseal your iphone and other gadgets, wondering if there is a process like that for camera’s without adding bulk. From my understanding the 5n is not weather sealed, am I right in thinking that ?
One More Thought
9 months ago |I am just amazed by the quality of cameras available today at a reasonable cost. We are truly living in a golden age of photography. This is an amazingly competent machine..and the only thing that I can think of against it is that there is likely an even better model, the NEX 6, coming soon, at not a very higher price.
Taiga
9 months ago |We are living in the golden age of cameras – meanwhile, your average photographer has gotten worse and worse
Thanapong
9 months ago |I interest 3 things for taken photo my baby ,
1. Accuracy and Fast AF when using SEL 50f1.8, I loss many photo when use NEX5N + SEL 50f1.8
2. touch shutter
3. Object tracking , Nex5N efficiency not ok
If these 3 things are ok I will buy buy while I have NEX5N
TTAiwo
9 months ago |Nice features but don’t see the need for an upgrade to the 5R from the 5N for now [just got the 5N some days ago]. Reason is that the 5N has most of the features already, only differences are the picture framing, wifi, 180deg tilt screen [which i don't really like].
I also believe the auto-picture framing can be made available via firmware upgrade for the 5N and that will definitely be nice.
But if you are considering a NEX camera fresh from point and shoot set, i would def recommend the 5R.
