HOT! Sony NEX-5R and NEX-6 images leaked!!!
And here we have the first real images of the new NEX-5R and NEX-6 cameras. Click on the pictures to see the full size version! These are pictures found by the nice guys from chinese.vr-zone.com. As a reminder. Sony may announce the new cameras and lenses on August 28th. This is the list I got from reliable sources:
NEX-5R: Looks almost exactly like the NEX-5n and has the flip screen from the NEX-F3. It has a completely newly designed 16 Megapixel APS-C sensor with Phase Detection AF pixels. It has WiFi connectivity and APP support. You can surf on Internet with it. Price around $700 with kit lens.
NEX-6: It’s a mini NEX-7 with integrated viewfinder. Compared to the NEX’7 it has an EVF with less resolution and same newly designed 16 Megapixel APS-C sensor. It has WiFi connectivity and APP support. Price between the NEX-5R and NEX-7 (NEX-7 is currently priced at $1200 at Amazon so my guess is around $950 and $1000).
Sony 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6: It is a pancake zoom with OSS and power zoom.
Sony 11-18 f/4.0: Normal (non pancake) zoom.
Sony 35mm f/1.8: Fast non expensive prime lens as big as the Sigma 30mm lens.
Stay tuned on SAR!!! Don’t miss the next big Sony news and follow SARs RSS feed or follow me on Twitter and join the super friendly Facebook comunity!
P.S.: In moment like this I am happy to see again that my rumors were correct ![]()

10 months ago |does nex-6 have proximity sensor?
J-Man
10 months ago |The 6 looks like an engineering mockup, the id sticker is not standard looking like the 5R
Sky_walker
10 months ago |Yea. It does. I mean: Either this or that’s the ugliest NEX released to date
Only thing I’m missing is iISO hotshoe. Seems like there won’t be a way to use Sony flashes with it. Shame.
Matt
10 months ago |Except for the rumours that Sony is moving to this shoe and their will be included compatible adapters.
Also I don’t think it is ugly, certainly not pretty though. Looks kind of elegant and purposeful. Also build wise seems more Alpha than NEX – That plastic looks like it is straight off a 5-series.
E
10 months ago |But a hotshoe with no control pins moves us back 30 years in terms of flash functionality. As it looks, there is no way for the camera to control the flash, except triggering it.
I soooo hope these are mockups…
Matt
10 months ago |There are a bunch of control pins in the front of the shoe. My guess looking at these first pictures is that this is essentially being used as a ‘cold-shoe’ to mount different things using the ISO standard for camera shoes, such as field monitors, microphones, lights etc. Then it has a set of pins that can be adapted for different uses, such as the Minolta shoe accessories as well as NEX accessory port accessories, depending on your needs, with supplied or available OEM adapters. It should be able to take EVFs, Mics, Flash guns, Monitors, continuous lights, wireless triggers etc just fine.
Did you notice that the NEX-6 doesn’t have a NEX accessory port? That is because it adapts through the new shoe.
I don’t know why everyone is getting so up in arms about the new shoe, so far as I can tell it is 3 times as useful as any other shoe option they could have gone with.
E
10 months ago |Nope, didn’t see the connectors, thanks for pointing them out.
Hopefully then, a hot shoe adapter can be mounted for current flash lineup.
If the acessory shoe is gone, then atleast they seem to have finally decided on the connector and the data formats. – Good!
I was kinda expecting the new flash mount to have a hole in either or both sides, so that the flashes could be securely locked in place, thereby keeping one of the strong points with the Minolta hotshoe. Oh well …
James
10 months ago |if those hidden pins at the front of the ISO hotshoe are pin-compatible with alpha/minolta flashes, then Sony may be able to very easily keep everyone happy. They could supply a very slim adapter (not the huge minolta-to-ISO things you see around) that slips in to the ISO shoe and provide an alpha shoe. Could be just a few mm deep as its not a ‘smart’ adapter, just a physical adapter to the hidden minolta pins.
It’s a thought!

10 months ago |looks like sony is copying apple with the design again
Maxwell
10 months ago |Apple? I have not seen any Apple camera.
But Apple design is “flat and less of everything”.
These cameras looks like prototypes.
Matt
10 months ago |I have an Apple camera. People are so quick to forget…
Though this looks nothing like it, nor any other Apple product I can think of… Closest ‘might’ be the 20th Anniversary Mac, but you’d have to do A LOT of squinting to see it!
jon
10 months ago |not sony, but samsung they are in an untouchable axis of copy.
Sky_walker
10 months ago |lol
funny, but truth.
Zony
10 months ago |Only if the 5R has better S/N ratio would it make much sense over the 5N. Ok, the current 5N focus tracking sucks, maybe the PDAF part of the 5R can help there.
Personally don’t care about the geeky conectedness of the 5R. Like my life is so fascinating, I must upload it this instant from a Starbucks wifi instead of when I get home to satisfy legions of Zony-loving dweeb fans.
Matt
10 months ago |There are a lot more potential ‘serious’ uses for the ‘geeky’ features in these two. It is a bit like before the iPhone existed, most people would have found it difficult to see what the iPhone might be able to do for them, most mockups/leaks for example were purely an old clickwheel iPod with a phone built in.
An extensible OS is a flat out great idea for a camera, an off the shelf smart phone OS in a camera is a beyond terrible idea.
Hopefully it is the former.

10 months ago |Why call it SR5 when it’s already tangible
Now I’m gonna have second thoughts about my brand new NEX-5N that I received from RMA.
Robert Bell
10 months ago |Nothing much to look at but neither is any other NEX. Looks like they have finally listened to there customers and added a command dial and proper hot shoe. This along with the 16mp sensor makes it more desirable than the nex7 to me.
setumismo
10 months ago |No pop-up Flash on the NEX-5R ? Really.
I will a pop-up Flash!!!!!!!!!
Can someone confirm this?
Portmixus
10 months ago |There appears to be no popup flash!
Something I like…because the body of the 5 (N or R) is just perfect in size! Adding a popupflash only makes it bigger (look at the nex F3…)
It about personal taste
I love they added a second wheel on the 5R! (which I would assume can also be perfectly used as a mode dial
)
Stephan
10 months ago |I am probably alone in this but I feel they picked the wrong features to bring over to the NEX-6. Just give me the tri-nav on NEX-5R and I would be happy. I crappy low rez view finder and a dedicated mode dial has zero appeal.
Denis
10 months ago |Can’t get why mode dial is needed. Does someone spend all the time changing shooting modes? Needless gimmick IMO, they better insert additional control wheel.
GreenLens
10 months ago |there is a control wheel, just under the mode dial.
Matt
10 months ago |A needless gimmick… That is on every Pro SLR and DSLR (and consumer) that you could name in the last 20 years. I love peoples interpretation of a gimmick.
The MORE direct control over shooting parameters, the better.
Robert Bell
10 months ago |Gimmick? This has been the biggest complaint of the nex’s and its nice to see they have listened to there customers concerns eventually.
Lofote
10 months ago |But he is right. Who switches mode often? Usually you stay in ONE mode, direct to access to OTHER paramters are much more important.
marla2008
10 months ago |At last !
I understand Sony uses can be a little put off, but for me as a GX-1 user, the NEX6 looks * exactly* like the camera I’ve been dreaming of. Now please, pretty please, give us touch focus via screen, and reliable continuous AF, and I’m buying one. No wait… I’m buying two. Lol.
Chiimaero
10 months ago |Same here ! At last !
This NEX6 might be what I wanted my NEX5 to be in the first place, that is, NEX5 +
- good controls with additional dials + touch screen (I don’t doubt touch to focus is in)
- fast AF (again, I don’t doubt this will be put to good use for continuous AF)
- build in flash and EVF are also to put on the plus side
I did not bought NEX7 because of its lack of touch screen and phase detection AF. Also, 24MP are useless for me.
This NEX6 really is a dream
nick
10 months ago |I do.
Stephan
10 months ago |I would take the tri-nav over a lower rez view finder any day of the week. I know many are excited for the NEX-6, I feel like they brought the wrong features over. I want good controls on my camera so I can quickly adapt settings to get better shots.
Jerry Suppan
10 months ago |I reckon that the rumor of a full frame sensor-equipped NEX is now dead since the official announcement is right around the corner for the new APS-C sensor-equipped new NEX-5 and 6.
admin
10 months ago |Wrong Jerry….so wrong
ageha
10 months ago |Cool, can’t wait to buy one when it becomes available at the end of 2013.
Matt
10 months ago |These were rumoured long before the FF NEX – One has nothing to do with the other (other than the obvious of being part of a family of products). The rumour for FF NEX was never for a 2012 release.
Kirk fuk
10 months ago |Can nex9 be a square sensor? Would it fit emount circle? Or is square sensor only fit alpha mount?
George
10 months ago |Please tell me that dial on the NEX-6 isn’t final…it’s horrendous. I’d love a dial…but the one shown doesn’t fit the overall design IMO.
Still, the NEX-5R and NEX-6 look great
Now…more lenses please to capitalise on the new PD-on-sensor AF
Poki
10 months ago |The mode dial on the NEX-6 is much less useful than the soft dial on the NEX-5R – too bad considering I want exactly what a NEX-6 has to offer except that ugly dial. Guess I have to go with NEX-7 than … (As soon as it has application support
)
Jon
10 months ago |Poki, I think (though not sure) there’s another control dial underneath the PASM mode dial.
Vector
10 months ago |The 5R ist beautifull but the 6 is a joke, or?
Robert Bell
10 months ago |I’m amazed how many people think any nex’s are good looking? Great cameras and i’m looking forward to the nex6 but they all look ugly to me to different degrees the nex-7 being the best looking but none are going to win a beauty contest. The 6 just looks a little uglier than the 3 and 5.
Rick
10 months ago |Sony finally builds the perfect Nex with the 6, better focusing, better low-light than the 7, flash and hotshoe, looks like my 5n will be headed to a new owner soon. Please let the hotshoe be a standard and not the Sony/Minolta.
Adding the mode dial, a control wheel, the extra button on top, AEL lock on back in addition to standard Nex two buttons and a multi function wheel next to the LCD – at least Sony was listening to some of the complaints – nice.
Now more lenses and firmware updates to existing cameras please.
GreenLens
10 months ago |I would also guess a better battery life over NEX-7 with EVF on.
ChK
10 months ago |Need GPS!
HS
10 months ago |The REAL FANTASTIC REVOLUTION is that EVERY NEX-MODEL HAS GOT IT`S OWN USER-INTERFACE: 3 without wheel, 5 with wheel and function buton, 6 with printed wheel and 7 with two wheels. That makes it much more easier to change – to Canon or Olympus f.e..
Matt
10 months ago |So what’s the problem? How is this any different to any other manufacturer?
For the record though:
NEX-3 – 1 Wheel
NEX-5R – 2 Wheels
NEX-6 – 2 Wheels + Mode Dial
NEX-7 – 3 Wheels
feelyjordan
10 months ago |Another vote for GPS here, and please fit a standard (not Sony/Minolta) hot shoe, but, otherwise the NEX 6 potentially ticks the boxes for me. Only hope the addition of rumoured phase detect focus does not impair sensor performance.

10 months ago |Too bad that the 5R doesn’t have a pop-up flash like the F3…
Wishmaster
10 months ago |Andrea, do you know whether the evf is going to be 800×600 like the one used in a57 or is it going to have higher resolution? And are you sure that it’ll have lower resolution evf than nex-7?
Carlos
10 months ago |andrea, So Thats a new hot shoe, so is Sony Cameras are getting new hot shoes? The mInolta hot shoe is better, Yes the Universal hot shoe is more popular and you can buy any kind of cheap leds or lights for $10, but the Minolta is just much better. So sad that sony is going this road. and They could figure out a better solution to support both universal and Minolta.
albin
10 months ago |Man I really like that NEX 6.
Looking forward to the announcement!
How can I justify an other camera?

10 months ago |Why does a camera need wifi/internet capabilities? Its a camera.
