(SR5) IMPORTANT: All new products announcements have been CANCELED!
I got in touch with my soruces and they do all confirm that ALL (!) new products announcements have been delayed! There will be no new product announcement yet. No NEX, no SLT no new lens! The sources confirmed that today (April 4) Sony should have announced the new products. Everything has been canceled and Sony didn’t decide when they will make the new product launch.
You can spread the word around the web. Sony production capacity has been hit very hardl by the earthquake-tsunami-Fukushima disaster. And I do believe most Japanese companies are not giving us the full view of the problems they have right now.
I want to thank all (many!) sources that contacted me to share that news.

2 years ago |Not good. The D5100 just announced today and it’s looking pretty nice. Hopefully this doesn’t take back any market share Nikon lost to Sony last few months.
pancanikonpus
2 years ago |Yeah! poison affected from Nikon D5100. Just wait for the full spec reelase and decide. too long have to wait for A77.
Thomas
2 years ago |Ah, well that’s a bummer. Nonetheless, I’d say an earthquake is a pretty good reason to why it’s delayed.
James
2 years ago |Sony sensor production has probably been hit hard but their cameras are made in Thailand. Only their professional models are made in Japan. Nikon has been able to announce the D5100 which has a Sony sensor??? I would say there are a lot of lies and half truths coming out from these Japanese companies.
Steve
2 years ago |James, there is a difference between announcing and shipping.
Maybe Nikon has already recieved a number of sensors needed for this new product.
Dulaney Ward
2 years ago |or maybe Nikon is going to delay shipment

2 years ago |This is crappy news if I ever her any. I am sad and understanding towards the Japanese people but I would hate to belief Sony would not have been stockpiling their sensors and other parts in preparation for the release date of these products.
Still, I would buy the a77 or whatever they decide to call it in a heartbeat!

Rumor, delay, cancel, further delay. New rumor, delay, cancel. Repeat.

2 years ago |morgul, no one is forcing you to take notice of this rumors site, if you don’t the nature of this then piss off and take your whining somewhere else.
An entire country is facing crisis on a day to day basis and you are complaining like an infant.

2 years ago |Sony is a useless company. I have to admit that when I bought my A350 and A700, it looked like a great bargain because of the Minolta heritage and the built-it image stabilization. But since then it has been generally a downhill journey.
This is what happens to mega-size corporations where pleasing the customer base is less important that meeting pie-in-the-sky division objectives.

2 years ago |The D5100 may well be launched within the next 24 hours but I doubt many will ship if its true that Sony haven’t made any sensors since the disaster struck.
New cameras and lenses can wait and will have to wait until Japan returns to some sort of normality, and I don’t expect this to happen quickly.
Enjoy your camera and lenss and give some thought to the trauma and upset the people of japan are enduring

2 years ago |I don’t see any reason why they can’t announce the product or at least show some pictures. Who cares if they will be delayed; we already know that. That Earthquake excuse is bull crap. Any manufacturer can announce any future product without even mentioning the release date.
Vlad
2 years ago |“That Earthquake excuse is bull crap.”
I am not even going to comment on that stupid and insensitive comment.
“Any manufacturer can announce any future product without even mentioning the release date.”
Look what just happened – some rumors about an announcement appeared and now other rumors cancelled the announcement. And you are already disappointed. And you ask Sony announce and then wait to release it? It’s the same thing as the rumors, but official, hence worse.

2 years ago |Sony is not a good company, they are not report the true story story of the disaster impact. Now they are panic at last minute and start get mad by delete this, delete that. pretty them…

2 years ago |I don’t know about you, but a company who put people first can’t be that bad. In other words, it’s doubtful that any product announced today will be available tomorrow or even next week. If you want to disparage companies for reacting to a fluid situation in a haphazard manner, then go ahead. In a time of crisis, finger pointers such as yourself are not necessarily the ones that people will listen to. Let’s hope for the best for the people affected by this calamity (and other calamities around the world). Your sanctimonious (and poisonous) name calling really should be toned down (if you are capable of such civility). The recovery from such a disaster will take time, not only in terms of recovering from infrastructure damage, but more importantly, in terms of rebuilding communities and even individual lives. The Japanese have shown a grace under severest pressure. If only you could do the same.

2 years ago |Sony could do proper official announcement of their problem and recovery plan not only to the board, but also for those long waited lovely users. By right all those factories have to shutdown in the context we are care of their life, their health. The radioactive indicator is far beyond the bar. I hope those medical support, monetary support from many countries will helps to improve their life in this crisis.

2 years ago |Because of the energy outages and that Fukushima Daiichi crisis may take months to resolve, I suspect Sony may be reconfiguring their operations to focus on key products. They may be evaluating their limited capacity and trying to determine what products can be made at which site, how much can they outsource, etc…
So, I believe Sony may be trying to prioritize it’s product lines. For us, that means they need to determine where the Alpha line fits into their overall priorities of the larger Sony Group.
So, to preclude from over promising, they should properly retract any planned product announcements.
Of course, this is all speculation, but I know for a fact at some level they have to be re-prioritizing operations.
I’m just curious to know how their recent re-org (April 1, 2011) has been impacted by the crisis.
Vlad
2 years ago |Your speculation is the one that makes most sense in the current situation.
PhotoNut
2 years ago |That’s just an excuse. Most if not all of Sony’s low end movers are not manufactured in Japan. For all we know there was never any plan to announce anything yesterday.
If I was a betting man, I would start getting nervous about betting on the A77 ever seeing the light of day this year.
Vlad
2 years ago |“For all we know there was never any plan to announce anything yesterday.”
Well, that’s a very different assumptions and if it is the case, then we are looking at a whole different angle.
“Most if not all of Sony’s low end movers are not manufactured in Japan.”
That’s the comments I see around, but that’s just oversimplifying a very complex situation. B Shaw pointed it out very well.

2 years ago |I can wait for new products. No big deal. My gear will take as good photos in 6 months as it does now. I wish Japan and the Japanese people all the best in their recovery.
AVESTA
2 years ago |there is absolutely nothing wrong with the Sony products we already own… everyone just needs to go about their normal business until Japan can rebuild.
Walt
2 years ago |Probably a good time to wait anyway. With all the disruption of all the companies it would seem likely that the defect rate could go up for a little while.

2 years ago |Well, Sorry for Sony! I am just switching to Nikon as I was waiting for years for a upgrade of the a700.
And please don’t bring the earthquake-tsunami-Fukushima disaster issue here. Sony can sell secsors to Nikon but can’t respect the demand of Sony users!!!
What a shame.

It’s impressive how people can make a badly based scenario in their heads and then get emotional over it.

2 years ago |Almazar80 +1 Well said.
here here. The D5100 initial allotment was finished before the earthquake anyway. Nikon and Canon are also having plenty of issues, many more than most of realize.
One of the major cities of the world, a heart of modern technology, a cultural center for millions of people, gets hammered by not one but an actual chain of natural disasters ranging from the not-so-nice to the catastrophic and you’re concerned about whether or not your camera’s theorized replacement is being delayed?! Really?
Get real. No one not on the island of Honshu knows what’s really going on, least of all a few camera geeks like us. These people need time. Because people have lives, mate. Have some compassion.

Announcements could still be made, with more uncertain availability dates.

2 years ago |AFAIK, many Japanese companies are moving their facilities from Sendai or elsewhere in N. Japan to Thailand, Indonesia, China, etc.
Sony will do the same, and resume production at some point. I guess the point of delaying the announcement is that the sensor-construction was hit heavily: we are not talking about the 16mp sensor already existing in many camera lines (including the Nikon 5100), but the rumored and expected apsc 24mp that should have appeared in the Nex7 and Alpha 77 (or whatever the name will be). The delay will probably be significant, if they have decided not to announce the cameras. Probably the entire production of the new sensors will have to be reconfigured. This will impact also other companies, in primis Nikon, which was relying on the new sensors for the expected D400
Dulaney Ward
2 years ago |Strange; Sony’s image sensor facilities are all on the island of Kyushu, many miles from the affected area, as far away as you can get and still remain on one of the four main Japanese islands. On the other hand, perhsps suppliers have been completely disrupted, and perhaps there are frequent afterquakes even on Kyushu that, while they do no damage, have kept the sensor fab facilities shut down. I think I saw that a volcano was erupting on the island.
However, the Sony Semiconductor Shiraishi facility in Myagi was damaged & remains shut down. It produces Bluray laser devices, some used in PS3, so the supply of the PS3, which is a major moneymaker for Sony, is likely to be disrupted unless Sony finds alternatives to the devices made in Myagi. Maybe this is the kind of thing b shaw was talking about above.
lorenzino
2 years ago |Well, the Nikon facility in Senday was not hit heavily, but they moved away all production. The fact is that the entire line of supplies is currently on halt.
However, we’ll see what happens in the next weeks…

2 years ago |i guess on japan’s side..it would seem inappropriate to launch products for their own gain when their own people are still suffering the effects of the disaster. i wish the people of japan all the best and may they recover from this unforseen disaster soon.
SonyA77
2 years ago |Actually Japan’s economy needs to launch new products and get their industry moving. They will be well aware of this and fixing their factories in their usual committed and efficient manner.
Walt
2 years ago |The sensor facilities are having problems that aftershocks keep causing auto shutdown of the equipment. You can’t build such precise equipment if your production machines keep being vibrated.
