(SR5) Incredible! Sony A77 aleady nominated for the design award! (Engadget)

The unreleased Sony A77 just has been nominated for the Design Award (Source: g-mark.org UPDATE: Now removed!). The website confirmed the rumors you saw first here on SAR. The A77 has indeed the new 24 megapixel Exmor CMOS sensor, the “world’s fastest” burst rate of 12 frames per second, 60p and 24p video recording and “world’s first” XGA OLED electronic viewfinder (UPDATE: Source confirms the A77 can do 30p too!)
As you can see the Good Design Expo will start on Friday 26. This also confirms the release date is on August 24! Be sure to be here on that day at SAR to follow live the announcement!

10 months ago |XGA gives roughly 2,4 millions dots and it was supposed to be 3 millions dots viewfinder. External viewfinder for nex was supposed to be 2,4 millions dots, so how it’s going to be in the end?
BTW, do I see 16-50/2.8 lens on the camera?
admin
10 months ago |It’s 3 million dot don’t worry

As soon as it lands at my friends work I’ll go and test it, most of all I’m interested in the EVF.
Carl
10 months ago |WXGA, maybe?
The finder shouldn’t have a 4:3 aspect ratio, though true WXGA is neither 3:2 nor 16:9, but somewhere between the two.
Steve Jones
10 months ago |The A77 viewfinder will almost certainly be a 16:9 aspect ratio (as it is on the other SLTs) as a natural fit for video (and cropped to 3:2 for still photography). As such, it would probably be Wide XGA which has around 1 million pixels, or 3 million dots.

anyway… design awards?
a77 it’s an excellent camera but the desighn it seems to me like one another

10 months ago |“Design” is also about how it is manufactured, what’s inside, ergonomics, functionality, etc, etc, etc
a good Design doesn’t only look good, a good design is about the entire spectrum of “Industrial Product Design”

AFAIK xga is 1024×768, which is 0.7 megapixels, something doesn’t add up here

10 months ago |Sony has just introduce a new LCD Module 『ACX432AKM』(White Magic).
It is a 3inch,1.23MegaDots(640x480x4) RGBW VGA Module.
It reduce power consumption by 50% and twice as bright as normal RGB LCD module.
It can see clearly even under sun light.(1000 cd/m²)
Contrast Ratio 1000:1.

Do you think it will use in the A77?
admin
10 months ago |Thanks for the interesting link. It is not the same LCD used by the A77. But the technology could be very similar.
Jacky
10 months ago |But if you look at the image of the new LCD module, it have a large empty space at the right side of the LCD.
Which looks similar to the LCD module on the A77.
And this new LCD module have high brightness, high contrast and low power consumption, which is best fit for the A77.

Matt
10 months ago |I am guessing it is WXGA. 1280×800 = 1,024,000 x 3 for RGB = 3,072,000. Which is like the a55 (in terms of aspect ratio) where not all the EVF is used unless you are in 16:9 mode.
Carl
10 months ago |Hopefully it will indeed by RGB, and not monochrome with sequential colour.
Jacky
10 months ago |I guess is XGA:
1 024 x 768 x 4 (RGBW) = 3,145,728 (3 millions dots )
Raghav
10 months ago |What does the W stand for?
Jacky
10 months ago |“W” stand for white.
Jacky
10 months ago |I guess the EVF and LCD will use PenTile RGBW, to increase brightness, contrast and reduce power consumption.

and
Most probably the new sensor will also use RGBW Bayer filter too, to get better high ISO performance.
Sony has patented the RGBW Bayer Filter sensor design.

10 months ago |Andreas, please could you ask your sources whether the A77 has AF micro-adjust? This is one of my biggest concerns.
I tried two A580s and they both had backfocus on all my fast lenses, so I completely gave up on that model and stuck with my A700, which focuses perfectly.
Sony need to either make sure their quality control is up to scratch in terms of AF sensor calibration, or they need to add micro-adjust, preferably both.
admin
10 months ago |Don’t worry, it has AF fine tuning

10 months ago |the A77 follows the A700. I’d be surprised if it doesn’t have this feature.

10 months ago |oh, I thought it did!
Anyhoo Andrea mentioned in the past that there will be AF adjustment on the A77.
SRL
10 months ago |both the a850 and a900 have the AF fine tuning
I found it to be necessary to use several of my old Minolta lenses.
All of my Zeiss are spot on.
scorche
10 months ago |I have found that the two primes I use the most are off 85Z and a 50s.
When I checked another 85Z at the store with the a850, I needed to change the microfocus to get it spot on.
If you have lenses that are focusing 100%, then it might not be a big issue, but for me Microfocus adjustment is a must for me to upgrade.
Mike
10 months ago |Can you also ask your sources if the A77 has contrast-based autofocus (like the “tripod mode” in Nikon cameras or “Live-AF” in Canon’s)?
And does it have contrast-peaking like in the NEX to allow for easier manual focus?
M
10 months ago |I am also very interested in the contrast AF feature! By the way, A580 has it in the main sensor LV mode and it is very useful for perfect focussing and especially for AF with slow lenses (e.g. 70-400G + converter(s). It still works well with an (open) aperture of f11! I am afraid that A77 will not have it, because in opposite to A580 the small SLTs (A33/55) don#t have the contrast AF feature.
fotowolf61
10 months ago |Admin:
I am glad to read the micro AF adjustment feature.
Do you know if the A65 has the same. This would also be a great feature.
Thank you Andrea

10 months ago |Andrea, how about croma and lens distortion correction?
albin
10 months ago |I am not bother about how many pixels the EVF has, as long as we don’t see them.
if it is just a tad sharper than the A33/35/55 then it is perfect.

10 months ago |Nice find! but im still more interessted in nex7. im still hoping its af speed is much increased as stated in previous post´s here on sar. it would be a shame to have an high class ilc modell with same af speed as the old nex series. i tested the e-p3 and the af speed is fantastic – that should be the goal for contrast af for sony!

10 months ago |Does anybody know anything about the flash sync speed or if it is internal flash control on the A77! I mean if the A77 has a better high speed sync function and a 200-250 flash sync or HSS. It may be a good competitor to the 7d. for sports!
What is said about the ISO noise?
john
10 months ago |A700 has 250 flash sync speed with SSS turned off so i would expect the same or better.
Tom
10 months ago |I am very curious to the quality of the photos from this camera, might have to sell my Nikon D7000 and lenses if Sony’s quality is up there.
jake
10 months ago |@Tom, I am a 4 brand user currently(selling 2 systems soon) and I must say Sony’s lens quality is probably the best and that is why I am mainly using my Alpha 900 and Alpha 850.
I mostly shoot with primes.
24mm , Sony has the best one the Zeiss24f2SSM.
35mm , IMO, Coshina Zeiss T*1.4/35ZF2 is the best one here.
50mm , I actually prefer the tiny Sony , very sharp (at least my copy) and very fast AF-ing lens on my A900, I also have the Nikkor AFS50f1.4G but the Sony is sharper.
85mm , like Photozone says , the Sony is the easy pick here , it beats the new Nikon hands down and a bit better than the Canon 85L or the Zeiss ZF/ZE.
135mm , there is nothing like the SAL135f1.8ZA , the sharpest lens ever made , imo.
200mm , Canon EF200f2LISUSM is the best but I dont use this focal length so I shun it.
as for zooms , the Sony Zeiss 24-70f2.8ZAsSM is the best std zoom ,it is sharper than the Nikkor and Canon L and much sharper than the similar Sigma and dont forget it is stabilized.
70-200, here the latest Canon is the best but Sony 70-200f2.8GSSM is a good lens and definitely better than the Nikon VR2(which is actually a 70-135mm lens) and I expect it to be replaced soon with a bit better sealed version.
70-400 range , this is easy one , the Sony SAL70-400GSSM is the clear winner here , a much better lens than both the aged Nikon and Canon equivalent lenses.
70-300 range , again , the Sony G is the clear winner , optically and mechanically.
as for UWA , the Nikon 14-24 is the king and the 16-35f4VR is the second best , so in this range Sony is quite weak but I dont use this range often if I have to I just use my Zeiss 24f2ZASSM, which is sharper than any zoom in this range (including the 14-24).
so, if you like primes and you mainly shoot 24-135 range , dont even think about it a munite , just order the A77V.
IMO, Nikon/Canon lenses are overrated and not that good ,espcially in real life use.
And without Video dedicated tech and video division in house, Nikon has least bright future, IMHO(although it is now selling well).
